Summary

An edit sent through openscreen mcp to a project open in the app's editor is now refused, instead of being written to the file and silently overwritten by the editor's next autosave.

Fixes #1138

Candidate for cherry-pick to release/v2.1.0.

Cause

  • The stdio server is a separate process: it only knew which project is open by asking an editor window in its own process, and it has none. Every project looked closed.
  • saveProjectIfUnchanged only sees reads made in its own process, so the app's earlier open went unnoticed.

Fix

  • Marker beside the projects. The editor tells the main process which project it holds (AI_EDITION_OPEN_PROJECT_CHANNEL). DocumentService.markOpenInEditor writes <projects>/.open-in-editor.json with { pid, projectId }, and removes it when the editor lets go or its window is destroyed. Writes are sync so removal lands on quit.
  • Survives crashes. projectOpenInEditor() ignores a marker whose pid is no longer alive (process.kill(pid, 0)), and an unreadable marker.
  • MCP server. listProjects reports open across processes. A write to a project an editor holds is refused before the checkpoint check, with a message pointing to closing the project or the in-app MCP server. Reads still work.
  • Every external writer. saveProjectIfUnchanged checks the marker again inside the project's write queue, just before writing, so setPointerTrack is covered too.

Not done

  • No editor-side guard against a newer file. Reasoning in the issue: with the marker, no OpenScreen writer edits a held project, and what the editor should do on conflict needs UX of its own.
  • Known ceilings. A pid reused after an app crash keeps the project "open" until the app's editor runs again (fails toward a refusal). An editor read in the milliseconds between the check and the write still races.
  • No CLI command besides mcp writes a DocumentService project (record --project-out and pack write their own files), so none needed the guard.

Tests

  • document-service.test.ts: marker set and cleared across two instances on one folder; dead pid ignored; unreadable marker ignored; marker never listed; saveProjectIfUnchanged rejects for a held project; isProcessAlive.
  • openscreen-mcp-server.test.ts: with the SDK client and an editor-less server (the stdio case), the held project lists open: true, an edit after createCheckpoint is refused and the file untouched, reads still work, the edit lands once the editor lets go, and a crashed app's marker does not block.
  • mcpDocumentHost.test.ts: the hook reports the open project, and null on unmount.
  • Both typechecks, Biome, and electron/ai-edition, electron/mcp, electron/cli, src/lib/ai-edition/store (715 tests) pass locally. Not run against a live app: the checklist line is updated for the manual pass.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

The stdio server runs in a process of its own and could not see which
project the app's editor holds, so it reported it closed and wrote to
its file, which the editor's next autosave overwrote. The app now
records the project its editor holds in a pid-stamped marker beside the
projects; listProjects and every external save read it, and a marker
whose process is gone is ignored. Refs #1138.

The editor reports its open project to the main process, which records it in a shared marker. The MCP server uses that marker to report cross-process project state and refuse file-backed edits to projects held by another editor. Stale or invalid markers do not block edits.

Cross-process editor project protection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Editor marker and save guard
electron/ai-edition/document-service.ts, electron/ai-edition/document-service.test.ts
DocumentService records the editor PID and project ID in a marker file. It ignores unreadable, invalid, or dead-process markers and rejects queued saves for a marked project. Tests cover marker handling and the save rejection.
Editor project-state reporting
src/native/contracts.ts, electron/electron-env.d.ts, electron/preload.ts, src/lib/ai-edition/store/mcpDocumentHost.ts, electron/ipc/handlers.ts, src/lib/ai-edition/store/mcpDocumentHost.test.ts
The editor reports its current project ID, or null, through the preload bridge and IPC channel. The main process clears the state when the sending WebContents is destroyed.
MCP cross-process listing and edit checks
electron/mcp/openscreen-mcp-server.ts, electron/mcp/openscreen-mcp-server.test.ts, electron/mcp/mcp-controller.test.ts, technical-documentation/testing/manual-e2e-checklist.md
MCP project listings include projects held by another editor. File-backed edits to those projects are refused. Tests and the manual checklist cover listing, refusal, and when edits can proceed.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 6f70b

The change refuses stdio edits to projects open in the editor, but two paths can leave an open project unprotected: a failed marker write, and an older window closing while a newer one holds a project. In either case an MCP edit can later be lost to the editor's autosave. Resolve both before merging.

When the app runs, it is the authority: the stdio server finds it through
<userData>/mcp-app.json and forwards listProjects, every document tool and
both checkpoint tools over a local pipe or socket, as MCP. The app runs them
through its one tool runner, shared with the in-app server, so the project
open in the editor is edited live with one undo step per call, and the
checkpoints are one store. With no app, or one that does not answer, the
calls run on the files as before, and the #1154 refusal remains for the
project a live app holds.

Part of #1174.
