Summary

Batch F of #1180: the MCP's export and record reach what the Export dialog and the recording bar offer, on both servers.

exportVideo

  • New options, the dialog's choices and defaults: fps (24, 30, 60) for an MP4; gifFrameRate (15, 20, 25, 30), gifSize (small, medium, large, original) and gifLoop for a GIF.
  • An option of the other format is refused rather than ignored. This includes quality on a .gif path, which was accepted before.
  • CliExportRequest gains mp4FrameRate and gifLoop, and the runner honours them.
  • The runner now sizes a GIF from the source size, as the dialog does, not from the MP4 quality tier.

startRecording

  • New camera option (true, or part of a camera's name) and cursor option (editable-overlay or system). listSources lists the cameras.
  • On stdio, CliRecordRequest and CliRecordRunner turn the webcam on through the HUD's own check. createProjectFromVideo links the camera to the take's asset, with its offset and size, as the editor does.
  • In the app, a new takePrefs maps the request onto the recording bar's prefs: mic, camera, system audio and cursor. TAKE_PREF_KEYS lists the prefs that come back after the take.
  • The bar's own camera setting no longer applies to an MCP take: on both servers, no camera means no webcam.

CLI

  • New flags: --fps, --gif-loop / --no-gif-loop, --gif-size small, --camera, --camera-device.
  • sources prints the cameras.

Product decisions

  • Auto-zoom and the voiceover mix at export are not exposed. They are edits of the project (zooms, addAudio), and an export that adds them would not be the project getFrames maps through. The dialog does not offer them either.
  • "Hide desktop icons" is not a startRecording option. The HUD has no such control, so it follows the user's Record mode setting on both servers.

Docs

  • Updated the tool descriptions, mcp-server.md, ai-editing.md and cli.md (+7 translations each), the openscreen-demo skill, the CLI help and the manual e2e checklist.

No native capture code changed.

Testing

  • npx tsc --noEmit, npx tsc -p tsconfig.test.json --noEmit and npm run lint all pass.
  • npx vitest --run electron/mcp electron/cli src/cli src/lib passes. New tests:
    • media-tools.test.ts: export options, defaults and refusals; camera and cursor forwarding; camera linked to the take's asset; cameras in listSources.
    • app-recorder.test.ts: takePrefs and pickTakePrefs.
    • args.test.ts: the new flags.
    • CliRecordRunner.test.tsx: camera on, and failure when it cannot turn on.
  • Not run: a real recording or export. The app was not launched. The manual checklist gains a row for the camera, the system cursor and the export options, on each server.

📝 Walkthrough

CLI and MCP recording now support camera selection and cursor settings, and source listings include cameras. Recorded webcam media can be linked to take projects. Export requests now support configurable MP4 frame rates and GIF frame-rate, size, and loop options.

Changes: Camera recording and source selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Camera contracts and source discovery
src/lib/cliContracts.ts, src/cli/CliSourcesRunner.tsx, electron/mcp/media-tools.ts, electron/cli/cliMain.ts, website/docs/cli.md, website/i18n/*/docusaurus-plugin-content-docs/current/cli.md
Source results include cameras and camera-label availability. CLI and MCP source listing enumerate cameras, and CLI text output reports camera labels or their availability status.
Camera selection and recording preferences
electron/cli/args.ts, src/cli/CliRecordRunner.tsx, electron/mcp/app-recorder.ts, electron/ipc/handlers.ts, electron/mcp/media-tools.ts, electron/cli/args.test.ts, src/cli/CliRecordRunner.test.tsx, electron/mcp/app-recorder.test.ts
CLI and MCP recording requests can select cameras by name or use a default camera. MCP recording applies camera and cursor settings and restores the saved recording preferences.
Webcam project tracks and recording output

Recording results carry webcam paths and offsets. Project creation adds a visible camera track with available dimensions. Tests and documentation cover camera recording and project linkage.

MP4 and GIF export options

Layer / File(s) Summary
Export contracts and CLI options
src/lib/exporter/types.ts, src/lib/exporter/index.ts, src/lib/cliContracts.ts, src/components/ai-edition/ExportDialog.tsx, electron/cli/args.ts, electron/cli/args.test.ts, website/docs/cli.md, website/i18n/*/docusaurus-plugin-content-docs/current/cli.md
A shared MP4 frame-rate type is used by export requests and the export dialog. CLI parsing adds MP4 frame-rate selection, GIF size and loop options, and format-specific validation.
MCP export validation and defaults
electron/mcp/media-tools.ts, electron/mcp/media-tools.test.ts, technical-documentation/architecture/mcp-server.md
MCP export requests define format-specific options, reject options for the other format, and pass default values to the runner.
Export dimensions and runner settings
src/cli/CliExportRunner.tsx, electron/mcp/media-tools.test.ts, skills/openscreen-demo/SKILL.md, website/docs/cli.md, website/i18n/*/docusaurus-plugin-content-docs/current/cli.md
The CLI runner uses the requested MP4 frame rate and GIF loop setting. GIF dimensions derive from source dimensions and the selected size preset. Tests and usage documentation cover the export options.

The camera and export changes have no identified merge-blocking risk in the supplied evidence. If a webcam source cannot be decoded, the compositor suppresses its overlay rather than displaying the screen there.

… and the system cursor

exportVideo takes fps (24, 30, 60), gifFrameRate, gifSize and gifLoop, with
the dialog's defaults; an option of the other format is refused. The CLI
contract and runner gain the MP4 frame rate and the GIF loop, and a GIF is
sized from the source size as in the dialog. startRecording takes camera and
cursor on both servers: the record runner turns the webcam on, listSources
lists the cameras, and the in-app recorder maps them onto the recording
bar's prefs. The CLI gains --fps, --gif-loop, --camera and --camera-device.
