Summary

The anonymous daily usage ping only ran from the GUI startup path, so an install driven only by an agent through openscreen mcp never counted as active.

  • openscreen mcp now sends the same ping once its server is listening, then every 6 hours, like the app.
  • It shares the GUI's state file in userData: an install used through both on one UTC day counts once, under whichever surface pinged first.
  • Same opt-outs as the GUI: tray toggle, DO_NOT_TRACK, CI, dev builds.
  • Nothing is written to stdout, which is the MCP protocol stream.
  • Each event now carries surface: "app" or "mcp".
  • The other CLI commands (export, record, info…) stay silent: they run in scripts and CI more often than for a person.
  • FAQ and privacy page list the new field, in English and the 7 site locales.

Testing

  • New electron/cli/cliMain.test.ts runs runCli({ kind: "mcp" }) against the real ping code: one ping tagged mcp, nothing on stdout (checked to fail when a write is injected), silent under the tray toggle, DO_NOT_TRACK, and a day the app already counted.
  • npx vitest --run electron/cli electron/usage-ping.test.ts, npm run lint.

📝 Walkthrough

The usage-ping event now identifies app or MCP use. The CLI sends periodic pings during MCP sessions, and the FAQ and privacy policy describe the added usage information.

Changes: Usage Ping Surfaces

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add surface to usage-ping events
electron/usage-ping.ts, electron/main.ts, electron/usage-ping.test.ts
Usage-ping facts and event properties now include an app or mcp surface. The app path supplies app, and tests expect that event property.
Send usage pings during MCP sessions
electron/cli/cliMain.ts, electron/cli/cliMain.test.ts
The CLI sends an immediate ping after the MCP server starts listening and repeats it at the configured interval. Tests cover ping properties, opt-outs, shared daily limit, and stdout behavior.

The FAQ and privacy policy describe whether use was direct or through the MCP server. Privacy policy dates change to 19 October 2026.

The privacy policy incorrectly says MCP sends nothing off your machine, although enabled usage reporting sends an anonymous event. Clarify the disclosure before merging.

Correct the MCP network disclosure.

openscreen mcp now sends the anonymous usage ping to PostHog. This conflicts with the statement that neither MCP server sends anything off your machine. Clarify that MCP protocol traffic stays local but the CLI sends the disclosed usage event. Make the same correction in the seven localized privacy pages.

The PR objective states that MCP startup sends this ping.

The MCP section still said neither server sends anything off the machine, which stopped being true once openscreen mcp sends the anonymous usage ping (#1344). Corrected in English and the 7 locales.
