Summary

One update flow, the one Codex and VS Code use: check in the background, download in the background, show an update button, install on the user's click.

Before: a check once per 24 hours of continuous uptime, which most sessions never reach, answered by a modal box, plus three update modes in the tray.

Now:

  • Check: a minute after launch, then every six hours. The manual Check for Updates stays.
  • Download: in the background, no dialog.
  • Signal: a blue update button in the HUD bar and the editor's top bar, plus a tray item Update to .
  • Install: only on a click, which restarts into the new version. Quitting installs nothing, so no update ends a take, an export or an agent's session on its own.
  • Broken updater: the GitHub release lookup still finds the version, and the button opens the release page.
  • Agent-only users: openscreen mcp looks the release up at most every six hours, cached. When a newer version exists, its instructions tell the agent to inform the user once and never to update OpenScreen itself.
  • Removed: the three update modes and their tray submenu.

User journey per install

Install How it updates What the user does
Microsoft Store (also winget install --source msstore) The Store, in the background. It applies the update once OpenScreen is closed. Nothing. No button in the app.
Windows .exe, per user The app downloads it, then shows the button. Clicks the button. The app restarts.
Windows .exe, all users Same. Clicks the button and accepts the UAC prompt.
macOS .dmg Same. Clicks the button. The app must be in Applications, or the click says to move it there.
macOS Homebrew cask Same as the DMG. brew upgrade works too. Clicks the button, or runs brew upgrade.
Linux AppImage Same. Clicks the button.
Linux .deb, .rpm, .pacman Same. Clicks the button and enters the password.
Nix Nix. Upgrades through Nix. No button.
Agent only, through openscreen mcp The agent tells the user once that a version is out. Opens the app, then clicks the button.

None yet. The updater only runs in a packaged build, so the button cannot be shown from a dev build.

Testing

  • Unit: the MCP notice and its cache, the editor's update button. Existing updater tests unchanged and green.
  • Checks: both typechecks, Biome, i18n:check.
  • Not run: the e2e pass on an installed build. The new Updating in place section of manual-e2e-checklist.md covers it: when it is mandatory, how to get a newer version to update to (RC path everywhere, a local feed on Windows and Linux), and the checks. AGENTS.md points computer-use agents at it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Updates download in the background and appear as a versioned button in the app, system tray, and launch HUD when recording is inactive. Click the button to install; installation won’t start automatically.
    • Self-updating builds check one minute after launch, then every six hours. If an update can’t be applied in-app, you can open its release page.
    • Packaged, self-updating builds can show MCP sessions a notice about a newer release, directing you to update through the app.
  • Changes
    • Update mode settings are no longer available; updates follow the same download-and-click-to-install flow.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the FAQ and testing guidance with the update flow and release-candidate testing details.

… on quit

Builds that update themselves checked once per 24 hours of uptime, which
most sessions never reach, and answered with a modal dialog. Now:

- The first check runs a minute after launch, then every six hours.
- A background find never opens a dialog. It becomes a blue update button
in the HUD bar and the editor's top bar, and an "Update to <version>"
tray item. The click restarts into a downloaded update, or downloads
one the "Notify" mode only found.
- "Download and install updates automatically" is now the default, and it
installs the downloaded update silently when the app quits, with no
relaunch. Not where the install needs rights (per-machine NSIS, deb,
rpm, pacman), and not while a CLI run is alive: the NSIS installer ends
every process of this executable, an agent's `openscreen mcp` included.
A click on the button is the user deciding, so it skips that veto.
- If the self-updater fails, the release lookup still finds the version
and the button opens the release page, so a broken updater cannot
strand users on an old build.
A user who reaches OpenScreen only through an agent never opens the app, so
never sees its update button and was never updated. On an install that
updates itself, `openscreen mcp` now looks the latest release up on GitHub,
at most every six hours, in the background and cached in userData. When
the cache names a newer version, a line opens its instructions: tell the
user once that opening the app installs it, and never update OpenScreen
yourself. The process updates nothing: stdout is the protocol, and the
installer would end it mid-session.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(update): background checks and an update button" matches the main change. The diff replaces the 24-hour notify-only check with a background check (first check after one minute, then every six hours), background download, and an update button in the HUD and editor top bar. It also removes the update modes. The title is specific and uses the conventional commit format, so it passes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It includes Summary, Related issue (Refs #301, a partial reference that does not auto-close), Type of change (Feature checked), Release impact (Minor checked), Desktop impact (Windows, macOS, Linux, and Installer/packaging checked), Screenshots (explains why none exist yet), and Testing (unit tests, checks, and the e2e pass that was not run, with a pointer to the manual checklist). The summary explains the new flow and removed update modes, and it includes a per-install table. The description is complete. Two small points: the template's 'Fixes #' line is replaced by a 'Refs #301' reference, which the template allows for partial work, and the Testing section lists the commands only in summary form.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 38.89% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 18 functions across 17 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

The update path is the one a release cannot fix afterwards: a build with a
broken updater can only be left through it. The checklist gains a section
that says when it is mandatory, why a dev build cannot run it, how to get a
newer version to update to (the RC path on every platform, a local generic
feed on Windows and Linux), how to tell an install happened, and the checks:
button, click, install on quit, elevation, a live agent session, the
release-page fallback and the agent-only notice. AGENTS.md points agents at
it from the computer-use mechanics.
Prunes the update path down to what Codex and VS Code do: check in the
background, download in the background, show an update button, and
install when the user clicks it. Removed:

- the three update modes and their tray submenu (notify, download,
download and install), with `update-settings.ts` and the four labels in
every locale. Every install now downloads in the background.
- the install on quit, with the elevation probe and the live CLI session
check it needed. Nothing installs unless the button is clicked, so no
update can end a take, an export or an agent's `openscreen mcp` session
on its own, nor ask for an admin password on the way out.

The FAQ, the e2e checklist, AGENTS.md and the MCP doc follow.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Let the failed-updater fallback find newer release candidates.

When the self-update feed fails on an installed RC, runBackgroundUpdateCheck calls checkLatestRelease. That call queries /releases/latest, which excludes prereleases. If the latest stable release is older than the installed RC, the fallback reports "current" and sets no badge. A newer RC therefore gets no release-page link, although the code comment says the user is "still pointed at the release page instead of being left on this version for good." Fixing this needs a release-list lookup that selects the newest RC. That change is not a localized edit, so this comment proposes none.

Suppress expired cached MCP notices.

updateNotice checks only whether the cached version is newer. It ignores checkedAt, so an expired cache can report a withdrawn release as available. The notice only tells the user to open OpenScreen; the app performs its own update lookup and the MCP process does not install the cached version.

- A background check that finds the running version current clears an
'available' badge, so the button never offers a release that was pulled.
- The click asks the recording veto before downloading, not after.
- A cached release lookup dated in the future no longer counts as fresh.
- The MCP notice says the app shows an update button, not that opening it
installs anything, and a test reads it through the server's initialize.

electron/background-update.test.ts:19-21
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Add a test for the failed-download badge branch in runBackgroundUpdateCheck.

When downloadSelfUpdate() returns a failed result, runBackgroundUpdateCheck publishes the available badge (electron/main.ts:802-809). No test covers this branch. A regression that publishes ready on this path would pass the current suite. The current code sets available, so this is a coverage gap and not a present production failure. The branch is new in this PR. The merge base has no badge publication on this path, and the planner tests removed here never covered a failed download.

AGENTS.md requires a test for every new behavior in the same package as the code under test (AGENTS.md:78). The failed-download badge transition is new behavior in the electron package, so this requirement applies and no test satisfies it.

Add a test that asserts the available badge after a failed download. Make the branch testable first, because runBackgroundUpdateCheck is not exported from electron/main.ts.

electron/mcp/update-notice.test.ts:70-72
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Assert the update notice that cliMain forwards to serveMcpOverStdio.

openscreen mcp now computes updateNotice at electron/cli/cliMain.ts:414-416 and passes it to serveMcpOverStdio. The new tests in electron/mcp/update-notice.test.ts call createOpenScreenMcpServer directly, so they never reach this call. electron/cli/cliMain.test.ts mocks serveMcpOverStdio and waits only for toHaveBeenCalled(). Removing the updateNotice argument leaves every test passing. AGENTS.md:78 requires a test for every new behavior in the same package, so this forwarding needs one.

Add a case to electron/cli/cliMain.test.ts that:

  • Sets app.isPackaged to true in the electron mock. The mock does not define it today, so tellsAboutUpdates is always false in these tests.
  • Keeps the mocked install channel "nsis". If "nsis" is not in SELF_UPDATING, use a channel that ownsItsUpdates accepts.
  • Writes mcp-update-check.json in mocks.userData with { "latestVersion": "2.2.0", "checkedAt": Date.now() }. The mocked app version is 2.1.0, so the notice is nonempty. A fresh checkedAt also stops refreshReleaseLookup from fetching.
  • Types the serve mock's parameter, then asserts that the first call's updateNotice contains 2.2.0.

Add a packaged non-self-updating case to the update notice test.

The mcp gate at electron/cli/cliMain.ts:408 has two terms: app.isPackaged and ownsItsUpdates(getInstallChannel()). Both mocks in electron/cli/cliMain.test.ts return nsis, so ownsItsUpdates is always true in these tests. Replacing that term with true leaves every cliMain test passing. No test covers a packaged build whose channel does not own its updates, such as store. A regression that drops the check would pass the suite.

Repository guidance requires a test for every new behavior in the package under test. This PR adds the gate, so the packaged non-owning branch is new behavior that needs a test.

Cover the updateNotice forwarding inside serveMcpOverStdio.

The CLI test replaces serveMcpOverStdio with a mock, so the assertion at lines 139-141 reads only the mock's call arguments. It detects a dropped value before the wrapper call, not inside the wrapper. The instruction test in electron/mcp/update-notice.test.ts builds the server directly and skips stdio-server.ts. No test runs the real serveMcpOverStdio, so removing updateNotice: options.updateNotice, at electron/mcp/stdio-server.ts:44 would leave every test green. The current code forwards the value correctly, so this is a coverage gap, not a live defect.

Add one focused test for the real wrapper. Stub openStdin from ../cli/stdin and the StdioServerTransport. Mock the server factory from ./openscreen-mcp-server so it captures the McpToolDeps it receives. Call serveMcpOverStdio with an updateNotice value and assert that the captured deps carry that value. This checks the forwarding line directly. A full client round-trip over stubbed stdin is not needed, because the client-visible instruction text is already covered by the existing test in update-notice.test.ts.

Classification change

The original trivial/nitpick label understates this gap. It is the only untested hop between the CLI and the server instructions for the agent update notice, and the commit's stated purpose is forwarding coverage. It remains a refactor-priority improvement and not a defect.

Add a non-nsis update-owner case to the cliMain notice tests.

The mock at line 47 hard-codes ownsItsUpdates to channel === "nsis". The notice tests therefore never exercise the real update-owning set for a packaged appimage, dmg, deb, rpm, or pacman install. The current code delivers the notice on those channels. Only a regression in the cliMain gate would go unnoticed here. Add one case with a non-nsis owner channel and a fresh cache, and assert that updateNotice is set.

Make the Store test fail when a lookup starts.

The Store test writes a fresh cache, so refreshReleaseLookup returns before any network call. A refresh that wrongly starts for a Store install therefore passes the netFetch assertion. The test name says it "looks nothing up", but the assertion detects only a lookup that reaches the network. Write a cache older than RELEASE_LOOKUP_INTERVAL_MS (6 hours) in this test. A wrongly started refresh then calls net.fetch before the assertion runs, and the assertion fails. The correct Store path makes no call, so the test still passes on the current code.

an optional age while preserving its current default for other tests, and pass
