Task

The owner's message: add a note on what distillation is ("distillation is the massification of
computation"), notes on Ortega y Gasset later, and in the same PR add Ortega y Gasset for his
theory of the masses.

  • notes/202610151812-what-is-distillation.md: one permanent note, made under
SMART_NOTE_POLICY.md. The claim is the owner's, so its status is open-question until he
approves it. The definition of distillation is checked against its primary source; the Ortega
dates come from a secondary source (partial).
  • 500AUTHORS.md: row 97, José Ortega y Gasset, La rebelión de las masas (1930). He is not one
of the 50 thinkers, so 50THINKERS.md is unchanged and still has 50.
  • works/openai/, LICENSES/Apache-2.0.txt, REUSE.toml, works/index.md: OpenAI's preprint, copied as is (below).
  • notes/index.md: a new section, "Distillation and the masses".

The OpenAI preprint. "Integer multiplication below n log n" (OpenAI, 23 September 2026) is
in works/openai/integer-multiplication-below-n-log-n/: paper.pdf and its LaTeX source
build/, 17 files, byte for byte the same as openai/math at 1581d4c (diff -r and cmp).
paper.pdf sha256 834f644c…a7ff198d90e4f6883a15ba9df7129. Licence: Apache-2.0, the licence of
openai/math, not public domain. Its text is in LICENSES/Apache-2.0.txt, REUSE.toml marks the
folder, and works/index.md has its section.

Checklist

  • A fact changed in prose/ is changed in prose-ste/ and prose-pt-BR/ too. (No prose changed.)
  • Every new Markdown file has its cite line (PERSONAS.md).
  • A change to a hard rule links its change proposal in docs/2-engineering/changes/. (No hard rule changed.)
  • A journal entry is added if this change met a challenge worth recording.

The owner's claim, distillation is the massification of computation,
as a permanent note (open question), with the method's definition
checked against Hinton, Vinyals and Dean (arXiv:1503.02531). Ortega y
Gasset joins 500AUTHORS.md for La rebelion de las masas; notes on him
come later.

paper.pdf and its LaTeX source (build/), from openai/math at 1581d4c,
unchanged. Apache-2.0, the licence of that repository: its text is in
LICENSES/Apache-2.0.txt and REUSE.toml marks works/openai/.
