The gh pr list commands at lines 93 and 103 use a jq '.[0].number' query without the // empty fallback found at line 42. If no PR is found (e.g., due to timing issues after creation), the PR_NUMBER variable is set to the string "null". This causes subsequent gh pr merge and gh pr edit commands to operate on an invalid PR number, preventing auto-merge and label application, despite error handling preventing script crashes.
