Port test filters: the filter seam, change detection, and report fields (upstream #1206, #1345) - #662
Upstream tester-army/e2e#1206 (da13624, feat(runner): run only the tests a pull request can affect) adds test filters: a filters config key, --changed-since <ref>, the change detection, and the "left out" part of the report. #1345 (47127f7, fix(decision): leave nothing out when the loaded config changes) adds context.configFile. The port has no runner, no collect/select, no e2e run/e2e list, and no reporters other than report.json, and dotnet test selects tests itself. So this PR takes what stands alone: the filter seam, the change detection, and the report fields. The wiring into a host is left, tracked in #661. COMPATIBILITY.md has a new "Test filters" section.
Changes.FindChangesAsync (Run/Changes.cs, upstream run/changes.tsfindChanges): merge-base diff, staged/unstaged/deleted/untracked files, renames as both paths, sorted by code point, 30 s budget, INVALID_CHANGED_SINCE (ConfigurationException).
Report: run.changes, run.filters, skip.filter, the filter error phase, in the wire form, in E2E.Reports (ReportChanges, ReportFilter, FilterOutcome, SkipInfo.Filter, ErrorPhase.Filter) and BuildReportOptions. schema/report-v1.schema.json and both fixtures are upstream's at #1345.
Docs: COMPATIBILITY.md "Test filters", skills/e2e-dotnet/references/running.md "Test filters". docs/ is generated from the XML docs.
Port-only symbols (src/)
Each has an upstream counterpart unless listed here.
ChangeOptions.CancellationToken, Budget: upstream signal, budgetMs as .NET types.
CodePointComparer: upstream compareCodePoints (internal/globs.ts), which the port has no file for.
JsonQuote.Of: .NET-only stand-in for JavaScript's JSON.stringify of a string, used in messages.
TestFilterScope.Secrets, CancellationToken, Timeout: upstream secrets (allSecrets), signal, timeoutMs as .NET types; FilterCall/CheckedResult are upstream's types of the same name; OrderedExclusions is a private ordered read-only dictionary standing in for a JavaScript Map.
FilterOutcome has two values (upstream a string union).
An interrupt surfaces as an OperationCanceledException (not INTERRUPTED); the work a timed-out call leaves behind is not recorded (leaveWorkBehind; no CLI process to keep). The context's Signal follows the interrupt only while the call runs.
A result is typed, so refusals for a non-object, an unknown key, a map, a numeric note, and a non-string reason cannot happen; null results/Exclude are refused with the port's wording.
Redactor.RedactFragments takes the space before a key's text into the marker in a diff line; upstream keeps it. Nothing leaks.
Skipped (and why)
Not ported, all needing the runner, collect/select, a CLI, reporters, or a package the port does not ship: filters in e2e.config.json, --changed-since, --no-filter, filterSelection and filterCandidates, select with excluded, the list/markdown/JUnit reporter output, telemetry, the filter setup step, CI recipe, decisionFilter (@e2e-dev/decision) and its tests including #1345's decision-filter it.
Tests
Ported:
Changes/FindChangesWithChangedSinceTests: all 10 it of changes.test.ts; the interrupt one is Partial_ (cancellation, not INTERRUPTED).
Time/BudgetTextTests: budgetText.
SchemaFixtures/ReportV1SchemaTests: the filter it of schema-fixtures.test.ts.
TestFilters/ApplyTestFiltersTests, AFilterPastTheDeadlineTests, FilterRecordsAndFilterSummaryTests (test-filters.test.ts, over hand-built candidates, since there is no collect/select).
TestFilters/WhatAFilterIsToldTests: #1345's integration it, over RepoConfigFile.
Partial_ tests (reason in each summary): hands a filter a list and a context; trims a reason and drops an empty note; refuses a result that is not {exclude, note?}; refuses a reason that is not a non-empty string; redacts and cuts what it echoes; leaves nothing out when a filter throws (4 cases, no leaveWorkBehind); abandons a filter that ignores its signal; the redact-fragments test (leading space); the deadline tests (real timers, no leaveWorkBehind); filterRecords (no serial group); the config file test.
Not ported it: filterSelection (2), filterCandidates (3), leaves nothing out when a filter throws a value that cannot be shown as text, the it.each cases of a typed result, select.test.ts exclusion cases, config.test.ts/cli*.test.ts/reporter/telemetry cases, packages/decision tests.
Tests with no upstream it: none.
Upstream problems
None found that this port had to work around.
Minor decisions
Public types live in E2E (Run/TestFilter.cs), report types in E2E.Reports, as the port does elsewhere.
Cancellation surfaces as OperationCanceledException, per the repo's review rules.
No real-model run: the change touches no agent, prompt, cache, replay, engine, or page-script code.
dotnet test over the solution (not RealModel): the new tests pass. Known Windows host failures only: E2E.Mobile.Tests (captured snapshot CRLF and install tests), E2E.NUnit.Tests visual baselines, and one flaky E2E.Cli.Tests idle-session test.
Reports can include change-detection details, test-filter outcomes, and the filter responsible for a skipped test.
Custom hosts can use a documented test-filter interface to evaluate candidates and report exclusions. Filters run in sequence; failed, invalid, or timed-out filters leave tests included.
Documentation
Clarified that the .NET port does not run filters or select tests using --changed-since; test selection remains controlled by dotnet test options. Pull requests continue to run all tests.

Walkthrough
This PR adds a public test-filter contract and ordered filter execution, Git-based change detection, and report fields for filter decisions and filtered skips. It also adds validation tests and documents which upstream filter features are not included in the .NET port.
Adds bounded Git command execution and lookup of changed paths from a ref’s merge base with HEAD. The result includes staged, unstaged, and untracked files, with validation for missing refs, unrelated history, shallow checkouts, and cancellation.
Adds filter candidate, context, and result types, plus ordered execution and validation. Failed, invalid, or timed-out filters leave candidates included; logging and filter output are redacted and limited. Tests cover ordering, context, failure handling, timeouts, and path resolution. The docs describe the filter seam and unported host and decision-model features.
Report fields and serialization src/E2E/Report/*, schema/report-v1.schema.json, schema/fixtures/report-v1.*.json, tests/E2E.Tests/SchemaFixtures/ReportV1SchemaTests.cs
Adds change metadata, filter records and outcomes, filtered-skip attribution, and the filter error phase to report types, schema, and serialization. Fixtures and schema tests cover valid and invalid combinations.

Possibly related issues
hardkoded/e2e-dotnet#661 concerns host wiring for filter selection and changed-since input, which this PR documents as not wired into dotnet test and does not implement.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 0f5aa
The report schema’s handling of contradictory change metadata should be confirmed before merge. The supplied evidence does not establish another actionable failure.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 0f5aa
The new filtering capability is not activated in an existing test host. Failed, invalid, or timed-out filters retain their input tests, and Git invocation has argument and cancellation controls. Remaining uncertainty concerns future host integration and ownership of unfinished filter work, rather than a demonstrated new attack path.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure is limited to library contracts and report representation. An attacker-reachable privileged filtering or Git execution path is not established: execution helpers are internal and current host invocation is absent. A future trusted in-process filter would run with its host's authority, not inside a sandbox supplied by this seam.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Caller-provided refs are rejected when empty or option-like, then resolved and peeled to validated commit hashes. Git arguments use ArgumentList rather than shell interpolation. Repository-location environment overrides are removed and terminal prompts disabled; this is not complete isolation from inherited Git configuration or executable resolution.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Filter timeout stops waiting and records a timed-out outcome without accepting exclusions; parent cancellation propagates. Abandoned task faults are observed and the logging callback is disabled when the call ends, but the task itself is not forcibly terminated. Disposal also ends the context signal's linkage to later run interruption.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Before host integration, define ownership of unfinished filter work and consider immutable snapshots for shared change and candidate collections. Read-only interfaces do not prevent mutation of underlying arrays, so these measures would strengthen cross-filter isolation without treating trusted extensions as sandboxed code.

Explanation
The title clearly and concisely summarizes the main changes: porting test-filter support, change detection, and report fields. The upstream issue references provide useful context without making the title misleading.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#633] The PR ports the standalone scope the issue asks for. Change detection: Changes.FindChangesAsync (src/E2E/Run/Changes.cs) builds the merge-base diff, staged, unstaged, deleted, and untracked files, sorts by code point, applies a 30 s budget, and raises INVALID_CHANGED_SINCE. The head summary records the later fix that rejects option-like refs. Filter seam: ITestFilter, TestFilterCandidate, TestFilterChanges, TestFilterContext (with ConfigFile, [#633] and upstream #1345), and TestFilterResult (src/E2E/Run/TestFilter.cs). TestFilters.ApplyTestFilters (src/E2E/Run/TestFilters.cs) covers ordering, validation, failure handling, timeouts, redaction, and summaries. Report fields: ReportChanges, ReportFilter, FilterOutcome, SkipInfo.Filter, and ErrorPhase.Filter are in src/E2E/Report, with wire serialization and schema fixtures. Tests: all 10 it of upstream changes.test.ts are ported as FindChangesWithChangedSinceTests. The test-filters cases are ported as ApplyTestFiltersTests, AFilterPastTheDeadlineTests, and FilterRecordsAndFilterSummaryTests. The #1345 config-file integration test is ported as WhatAFilterIsToldTests. The other #1345 test, the decision-filter it, is not ported. Its subject is @e2e-dev/decision, which the port does not ship. The issue asks to name unported items in COMPATIBILITY.md, and the PR states that this is done. Runner, filters config key, --changed-since, select, and reporter output beyond report.json are excluded. The PR description and the COMPATIBILITY.md summary name these exclusions and track host wiring in #661. The dotnet test mapping is documented. The incremental diff of src/E2E/Run/Changes.cs could not be read, so the post-review change to ref validation rests on the head summary and commit message.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed production files support [#633]. Git.RunGitAsync, JsonQuote, Paths.OnDiskPath, and Time.BudgetText support change detection and safe filter messages. LeftOut.LeftOutTests (src/E2E/Report/LeftOut.cs) and the FilterDecision helper support the report's left-out part. BuildReportOptions, Report, ReportRecords, and ReportWire carry the new report fields. The schema and fixtures describe those fields. GitRepo.CommitFiles and the test kit support the new tests. COMPATIBILITY.md, running.md, docs/index.md, and SKILL.md describe the ported behavior and its limits. No unrelated product area is changed. The head summary shows no change outside the test filter and change detection area.
Full details: Upstream Parity
Explanation
The upstream-parity check applies because the PR names tester-army/e2e #1206 and #1345. The prior documentation failure is resolved. The PR now changes skills/e2e-dotnet/SKILL.md to list the test-filter seam and report fields, and changes docs/index.md to document ITestFilter, change detection, run.changes, and run.filters. COMPATIBILITY.md also records the upstream mappings, differences, and skipped features with reasons. The linked upstream source was not available for an independent source comparison; this assessment uses the PR report and compatibility documentation, which name the mappings and omissions. Prior failure addressed: The authoritative diff now updates skills/e2e-dotnet/SKILL.md and docs/index.md with the filter seam, change detection, and report fields. COMPATIBILITY.md retains the detailed parity and skipped-feature documentation.

The public types define the filter seam, but an external custom host cannot call TestFilters.ApplyTestFilters or Changes.FindChangesAsync. The host must implement the application loop and change detection itself, or the project must expose public entry points. Mention the existing friend assemblies, such as E2E.Cli, if they are relevant.
