Config: app.command, readyUrl and port 0 (refs #645) - #699
A web target could not say how to start its app, so tests needed a hand-started server on a fixed port. This ports upstream's app.command, app.readyUrl and the free port for a url on port 0: the first test (or e2e explore, or an e2e mcp session) that needs the app starts the command, waits for the URL to answer, and the later ones find it running.
Covers #645 for app.command, readyUrl and port 0. The issue's "declare the app identity" (identity, environment, launchArguments, permissions) is split to #695, and sharing the command across processes and stopping its process group to #696. Because those are in the issue text, this is Refs #645 for them; the three keys named in the title are done.
RunApps / RunApps.StartAsync: a .NET test framework has no run-level start and finish hooks, where upstream's runner owns the processes. It starts the command once per test process and keeps it until exit.
ProcessJob (Windows job object, one per started process): ends what the command started, even after the command exited, and when a test host is killed outright (no ProcessExit handler runs then).
TargetConfig.WithApp, AppConfig.WithUrl: .NET config objects are immutable; they carry the URL on the assigned port.
ManagedProcess.OutputPump, Terminate/NativeKill, KillTree, ExitedWithin, ChildEnv's caseInsensitive parameter: .NET replacements for the node child process file-descriptor redirect, signals and platform check.
IAppProcesses (upstream AppProcesses), Readiness.WaitForExit, Provision.NoProcesses/StartedProcess: C# shapes of upstream types.
Command.DescribeValue and TargetApps.HttpUrl live beside their callers; upstream has them in config/validate.ts. CommandConfig is in Config/Command.cs; upstream has it in types.ts.
TimeSpan for StartupTimeout/ShutdownTimeout, with a bound of 2147483647 ms (a .NET timer's limit).
Test-only: the tests/E2E.Tests.App program (stands in for node -e), AppProgram, TestServer.
Differences from upstream
A cancelled token throws OperationCanceledException from StartAsync (CLAUDE.md), where upstream's start returns.
App-level unknown-key messages keep the port's wording (unknown targets[0].app key ...); the command's own are upstream's.
Partial or skipped upstream tests
Partial (named Partial_): Takes_only_strings_in_a_commands_args_and_env (no secrets.get() handle), Rejects_an_app_or_command_key_the_contract_does_not_know... (app-level wording), Rejects_non_positive_integer_timeouts (JSON has no NaN/infinity; adds the timer bound), Keeps_the_declared_zero_URL... and Substitutes_the_assigned_port... (no site/identity/digest), Reserves_a_free_port_per_target... (one target), Matches_and_replaces_names_case_insensitively_on_Windows (checks ChildEnv, not the child).
Skipped: the two process-group integration tests (above); enters the config digest like cwd does (no digest); target-processes.test.ts and shared-app-processes.test.ts (drive the runner); keys identity..., checks the shape of every app field, defaults environment..., derives the site..., target-identity.test.ts (#695).
The unit and integration managed-process.test.ts are ManagedProcess/ and ManagedProcessIntegration/ (two upstream files with one name); the notice tests wait out a real 5 s where upstream uses a fake clock.
Tests with no upstream it (.NET-only code)
RunApps/RunAppsTests (3 tests: free-port start and reuse, no command, failed start not remembered). Removed: Rejects_an_app_URL_that_asks_for_a_free_port_because_nothing_starts_the_app (covered by the ported Refuses_a_free_port_nothing_starts_on...).
Minor decisions
command and readyUrl are also allowed on device targets (upstream allows them on any target).
{port} with a fixed or default-port URL expands to that port, as upstream.
The generated API reference is regenerated for AppConfig and the new CommandConfig only; the generator also rewrites ~650 files (line endings and stale source links), which I left out.
Docs: skills/e2e-dotnet/references/{setup,running,mcp}.md, create-verification-skill, migrate-to-e2e, docs-site web guide, COMPATIBILITY.md (Config section and the stale "no app.command" lines).
Review findings
/code-review was run three times. Fixed: Unix descendants are ended after the leader, a failed output pump no longer leaks the process, an app that ended is started again, readyUrl is shown without userinfo or query, the output pump keeps draining after a log failure, a per-process job object ends a command's children on Windows, the command starts only for the declared URL, and a bad cwd fails as APP_UNREACHABLE. Left, with reasons: the app starts under the first caller's token and one app per test process (by design, #696); a PID can be recycled between the pgrep snapshot and the kill (bounded by shutdownTimeout); on Unix a child of a leader that exited before the stop is not found (#696); the log tail is redacted only for command.env and inheritEnv values, as upstream; cwd is not confined to the project root, as upstream (only log is); stdin is closed at spawn, as upstream's stdio: 'ignore'. Cache routes keep the origin, so a free port does not replay: #701.
Checks
The dotnet-claude-kit:code-review skill is not installed; I applied the CLAUDE.md C# checklist by hand (cleanup on failure, child processes, cancellation, bounded waits, redaction, \z). Real-model tests (dotnet test E2E.slnx --filter "TestCategory=RealModel"): E2E.Agent.Tests 17/17, the NUnit tests and both samples pass. MobileApp.E2ETests (9) and WinAppBenchmark.E2ETests (62) fail in the environment (no device, no built app).
Tests: ManagedProcess, ManagedProcessIntegration, AppPorts, Config, RunApps, Urls, Explore, FixtureRuntime pass. A whole-solution run on this loaded machine showed only the known Windows failures (mobile snapshot CRLF, NUnit visual baselines) plus two time-limit tests in E2E.Cli.Tests/TestFilters that I did not rerun; the full E2E.Tests assembly did not finish in this environment.
Web and mobile app targets can launch an app before tests or sessions and wait for a configurable readiness URL.
Configure the launch command, arguments, environment, working directory, startup and shutdown timeouts, and output logs. Supported non-CI runs can reuse an existing server.
Request automatic port allocation for loopback URLs; port allocation requires a launch command.
App startup is supported when opening sessions or exploring targets, as well as during tests.
Documentation
Added setup guidance and API references for app commands, readiness checks, port allocation, and server reuse.
Clarified app startup behavior for tests and web sessions.

Walkthrough
This PR adds app.command and app.readyUrl configuration, allocates requested free ports, and manages application startup, readiness checks, logging, and shutdown. It integrates startup with test fixtures, Explore, and MCP sessions, and updates API documentation and workflow guidance.
App configuration accepts command and readiness settings. Validation covers command fields and log paths. URL resolution expands {port} and assigns requested free ports. Tests and API references describe the configuration and resolution behavior.
Managed process lifecycle src/E2E/Run/ManagedProcess.cs, src/E2E/Run/Provision.cs, tests/E2E.Tests.App/*, tests/E2E.Tests/ManagedProcess/*, tests/E2E.Tests/ManagedProcessIntegration/*, tests/E2E.Tests/E2E.Tests.csproj, E2E.slnx
ManagedProcess starts processes, checks readiness, handles shutdown, builds child environments, and captures output. Provision wraps startup and cleanup. The test app and process tests exercise these behaviors.
App startup in test and session flows src/E2E/Run/RunApps.cs, src/E2E/Run/E2EFixture.cs, src/E2E/Run/AppPorts.cs, src/E2E/Explore/Explore.cs, src/E2E.Cli/Mcp/Session.cs, tests/E2E.Tests/RunApps/*
RunApps allocates ports, starts commands, and caches resolved targets. Test fixtures, Explore, and MCP sessions use the started target. Tests cover target reuse and startup failures.
Compatibility and workflow guidance COMPATIBILITY.md, skills/create-verification-skill/SKILL.md, skills/e2e-dotnet/*, skills/migrate-to-e2e/SKILL.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/api/E2E/*
Compatibility notes and skill guidance describe command-managed startup and readiness, and update verification, CI, migration, and MCP instructions. API documentation describes the command configuration and its properties.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to b15ad
The previously identified process-cleanup and credential-display issues are corrected. The change is mergeable after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to b15ad
Configured programs now run automatically before tests and local agent sessions. Direct execution, restricted environment inheritance, and readiness checks provide useful controls, but Unix descendants can survive cleanup and leave application processes running beyond their intended lifetime. No remote exploit or privilege escalation was established.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: The new Unix lifecycle cannot reliably reclaim descendants after their command leader exits. StopAsync discovers children with pgrep against the leader PID, while host-exit cleanup kills tracked leader trees. Already-reparented children can therefore survive failed startup or shutdown. A surviving application may retain its supplied environment and continue serving beyond the intended ownership lifetime. The limitation is documented and deferred, but it still weakens failure containment introduced by this PR.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A party able to influence the selected command configuration can cause execution with the host user's operating-system authority and HTTP requests from that host. Environment filtering is not a filesystem or network sandbox. The demonstrated scope is the local test or CLI environment; wider tenant or production exposure was not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — MCP's existing caller-selected config path now reaches app.command execution through the new startup call. Config selection accepts an existing absolute or relative path, but the demonstrated transport is local stdio. This establishes an authority expansion for selected configuration, not a verified unauthenticated remote attack path; deployment-specific client trust is unknown.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Commands use direct executable and argument-list semantics rather than implicit shell evaluation. The child environment is cleared and rebuilt from default names, explicitly inherited values, and configured values. Readiness disables proxies and redirects; preflight rejects an already-answering endpoint unless reuse is enabled outside CI.
observed — Readiness URL diagnostics omit userinfo, query, and fragment. Configured environment values are selected for startup-error redaction, but persisted stdout and stderr are written raw to the configured log. Log-path validation requires project-root containment; it does not make application output secret-free.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Cleanup has platform-dependent guarantees. Unix snapshots descendants before signalling a live leader, while Windows uses a kill-on-close job object. These are meaningful controls, but they do not resolve the documented Unix case where descendants were reparented before discovery.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Use durable Unix process ownership, such as an appropriately isolated process group, so cleanup does not depend on the leader remaining alive. Validate leader exit, cancellation, and host termination with surviving descendants.
proposed — Make the MCP authorization contract explicit: selecting a configuration can authorize local program execution. Environments that trust clients only for application interaction should constrain configuration selection or separately authorize command execution.

Full details: Upstream Parity
Explanation
Upstream parity fails on unreported symbols and tests. In src/E2E/Run/ManagedProcess.cs, IAppProcesses.Running/ManagedProcess.Running and ManagedProcessHooks.Env have no counterpart in upstream AppProcesses, ManagedProcess, or ManagedProcessHooks; the PR body does not name these symbols as .NET-only. In tests/E2E.Tests/ManagedProcess/ManagedProcessMessagesTests.cs, Shows_the_readiness_URL_without_userinfo_query_or_fragment has no upstream it. The PR body lists only RunApps/RunAppsTests as tests with no upstream it. Upstream's corresponding reuse tests are the three APP_ALREADY_RUNNING tests in packages/e2e/tests/unit/managed-process.test.ts, and none checks this URL sanitization assertion.
Resolution
Map the new process members to upstream symbols, or name each one in the PR body as .NET-only with its reason. Remove the message test, or make it a correctly named Partial_ port of the applicable upstream reuse test and list the limitation. Update the no-upstream test report to cover every remaining RunApps test and its reason.
