Grant browser permissions from a web target's app.permissions (upstream #1429) - #795
A web target can now declare app.permissions with grant states, and every page of the attempt holds them. { "clipboard-read": "grant", "clipboard-write": "grant" } lets the app use the clipboard in headless Chromium, which refuses it otherwise. The grant survives RestartAsync and ClearStateAsync. Names are Playwright's per browser; an unknown name or a deny/reset state is INVALID_CONFIG.
WebPermissions.ValidatePermissions = validatePermissions / BROWSER_PERMISSIONS. WebEngine.SetUpContextAsync = the setUpContext grant after the site headers. A provider or Connect takes Chromium's names.
Config: web app accepts permissions (was refused).
.NET-only: EngineStartOptions.TargetName and .Permissions, E2ESessionOptions.Permissions, E2EFixture.Permissions (upstream hands the app to the engine's init as EngineAppInfo; the port has no such step). The check runs at attempt start, not config load, because the browser is engine state here.
Tests: Permissions/AppPermissionsTests (both its, real Chromium, no model). TargetApp/WebAndTheTargetAppTests: both are Partial_, since WebEngine has no validateApp to call (the first checks config refusal of device keys, not app.url required; the second calls ValidatePermissions directly, not through web({browser})). Issue to extract validateApp filed separately.
Not ported: .changeset, plugins/e2e skill mirror, reference/engine.mdx (EngineAppInfo is not ported).
Docs: SKILL.md, references/setup.md, get-started/web.mdx, COMPATIBILITY.md, API pages for the three touched types (regeneration on main is noisy; kept only touched pages).
Web targets can now request browser permissions, such as clipboard access. Grants apply to every page in each attempt, including after app restarts and context resets.
Permission names are checked against the selected browser. Web targets accept grant states only; unsupported names or other states produce configuration errors.

Walkthrough
Web target configurations now accept browser permission grants. The permissions pass through session options to the web engine, which validates them against the selected browser and grants them to attempt contexts. Tests and documentation cover configuration, validation, and runtime behavior.
Web app configuration accepts permissions. Session and engine options carry the permission map, and fixture, exploration, and CLI session creation pass it through.
Browser validation and context grants src/E2E/Engine/WebPermissions.cs, src/E2E/Engine/WebEngine.cs
The web engine validates permission names and states for the selected browser. Context setup installs site headers and grants configured permissions for regular and persistent sessions.
Tests cover browser-specific validation and clipboard access with and without grants, including after restart and state clearing.
Compatibility and API documentation COMPATIBILITY.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/api/*, docs-site/src/content/docs/get-started/web.mdx, docs-site/public/api/*, skills/e2e-dotnet/*
The documentation describes web permission configuration, browser-specific names, grant-only states, and permission scope. API source links and generated canonical URLs are updated.

Permission grants are explicit and validated, but they authorize every origin visited within an attempt—not just the configured application. Unrelated or compromised content can therefore inherit sensitive capabilities such as clipboard access. Attempt isolation limits the scope; cleanup of hosted persistent browsers remains the host’s responsibility.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Configured app permissions become authority for every origin in the attempt context. If an attempt reaches attacker-controlled content, that content inherits the selected browser permissions, including clipboard access where configured, subject to remaining browser checks. This exposure is newly enabled by the PR. The documented opt-in contract and fresh attempt contexts bound the risk, but neither confines authority to the application origin.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The supported attack scope is content within a permission-bearing attempt’s browser context, across origins and recreated contexts. Consequences depend on the selected permissions and resources exposed by the browser host. The inspected evidence does not demonstrate platform-wide, cross-tenant, or cross-attempt compromise.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A conditional attack path is: trusted configuration grants a sensitive permission, the attempt encounters attacker-controlled content, and that content exercises the inherited context permission. This is an introduced authorization-scope concern, not a verified exploit or evidence that an attacker can edit configuration.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — MCP session opening forwards permissions from the loaded target configuration; its request schema adds no direct permission-setting parameter. File-loaded permission dictionaries are read-only, and WebEngine validates names and grant-only states before browser-context setup. These controls protect configuration admission, not origin isolation within the granted context.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Direct persistent connections track claimed context identities and reject reuse. Provider-backed attempts instead allocate a fresh reuse-tracking set per lease and rely on the provider’s fresh-browser contract. Release is idempotently initiated locally, but provider-side cleanup after failure or interruption remains outside the inspected implementation.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Offer origin-scoped grants, with all-origin authority as an explicit selection, so an application’s sensitive permissions need not extend to unrelated content.
proposed — Snapshot public permission inputs before validation and retain that validated snapshot throughout the attempt. This would prevent caller-owned mutable dictionaries from changing the keys later granted during setup or recovery; no independent attacker-controlled mutation path was established.

Explanation
Issue #740 requires web-target app.permissions support, validation, tests, and documentation. The PR adds web configuration support, forwards permissions through E2ESessionOptions and EngineStartOptions, validates browser-specific names and grant states, and grants permissions during context setup. Tests cover granted clipboard access across restart and state clear, refusal without grants, and validation cases. User and API documentation describe the new behavior.
Full details: Upstream Parity
Explanation
The check applies because the PR names tester-army/e2e commit 3a841bb and upstream #1429. The upstream patch was readable and was compared with the reviewed diff. The port maps the upstream permission validation and context grant, including browser-specific names, grant-only states, restart/context-reset behavior, and the two upstream test files. All four changed upstream it cases have port tests; partial cases use the required Partial_ prefix and the PR gives the stated reasons. New API plumbing is either mapped to upstream names or explicitly identified as .NET-only with the missing engine-init reason. Skills, guides, API pages, and COMPATIBILITY.md were updated.

AppPermissionsTests passes permissions directly through E2ESessionOptions. The target-app test only validates permission names and states. Add an end-to-end test that loads app.permissions through E2EFixture or another supported configuration entrypoint, then verifies clipboard access in the browser.
