Fix SSH key symlink creating nested .ssh directory - #1098
Conversation
Fixes hassio-addons#1066 When the init-user script runs, it creates a symlink from ~/.ssh to /data/.ssh (the persistent storage location). However, if ~/.ssh already exists as a real directory (not a symlink), the 'ln -sn' command places the symlink *inside* that directory, resulting in ~/.ssh/.ssh -> /data/.ssh instead of the intended ~/.ssh -> /data/.ssh. The -n flag only prevents following an existing symlink at the target; it does not prevent ln from placing the new link inside an existing real directory. This causes SSH authentication to fail because ssh looks for keys in ~/.ssh/ (the real directory) rather than in /data/.ssh/ where the keys actually reside. Users had to manually run 'ssh-add' or copy keys from ~/.ssh/.ssh/ back into ~/.ssh/ as a workaround. The fix removes ~/.ssh if it exists as a real directory (not a symlink) before creating the symlink. This ensures the symlink is always created correctly as ~/.ssh -> /data/.ssh regardless of prior state. Co-authored-by: Copilot <223556219+Copilot@users.noreply.github.com>

It's only stale because no one has looked at it. Not sure what further action I'm supposed to take to get traction. |

Builds on the nested symlink fix, addressing two things. `rm -rf ~/.ssh` removes whatever the user has in there. The workaround circulating in hassio-addons#1066 is to copy the keys into a real `~/.ssh`, so that directory is not necessarily empty, and losing its contents to a silent `rm -rf` on the next start is a bad trade for fixing the link. `rmdir` removes the empty directory the image ships but refuses when anything is in it, so nothing is ever deleted without a log line. The nested link left behind by earlier versions is cleaned up explicitly, so people who are affected right now still get relinked on the next start. `ln -sn` fails whenever anything already occupies `~/.ssh`, including a correct symlink, which logs "Failed linking .ssh" on every start once the fix has been applied. It also leaves a wrong or dangling symlink in place, which the directory guard does not catch. `ln -sfn` covers all of those; the ZSH history link a few lines below already uses `-f` for the same reason. Verified against a local build, with `errexit` on, for a fresh image, a restart with the link already correct, a stale nested link, a real directory holding user files, a symlink to the wrong target and a dangling symlink.

Limit cleanup to the stale symlink.
When ~/.ssh/.ssh is a symlink to ${SSH_USER_PATH}, remove it. Otherwise, preserve the entry. The current rm -f ~/.ssh/.ssh can delete a user-created file during startup.
