- There are a few power-ups in the game. The Magic Mushroom turns in into Big Mario, and you can take a extra hit from enemies before you die. The Fire Flower replaces the mushroom when you're in the big form, and they turn you into Fire Mario, which allows you to shoot fireball to defeat enemies more easily. The Starman are rare, and they grant you temporary invincibility to defeat enemies by touching them.
- Extra lives can be earned by finding hidden 1-UP Mushrooms, getting 100 coins, and killing enemies in a row with shells.
- Some pipes and entered and they can bring you to bonus areas, often containing coins. They can also be used to skip some parts of the level.
- When getting a Game Over, you can hold A while pressing Start to bring you at the beginning of the world you died in, instead of at the beginning of the game. Doing so may block some achievements from being gotten.
- After beating the game once, the Hard Mode will be activated. In this mode, the enemies are stronger, the platforms are shorter, and some levels are replaced by their harder counterparts. Beating Hard Mode doesn't unlock anything in the game, but it is required to get a few achievement.
