Camera Documentation

Contour HD 1080 (Model 1300 v.1)

This camera records to .MOV videos files. These files are located in /DCIM/100MEDIA/

The camera has a configuration file called "FW_RTC.txt" located in the root directory. Example:

FW version:1080 v1.13

SW HI:	A
SW LO:	A
BR: D
EV: -1
SHRP:	3
AE: C
CTST:	56
MIC:	55
Zone:	-08
RTC:	2011/04/12 09:38:47

Format:
SW HI A:1920x1080 30fps
	        B:1280x960 30fps
	        C:1280x720 60fps
	        D:1280x720 30fps

SW LO A:1280x720 60fps
    	    B:1280x960 30fps
    	    C:1280x720 30fps
    	    D:848x480 60fps

BR M:Max
	        H:High
	        D:Default

EV -4~4

SHRP	1~5

AE C:Center
	        A:Average
	        S:Spot

CTST	1~255

MIC 0~59dB

Zone	-12~+13

RTC YYYY/MM/DD hh:mm:ss
    	YYYY : 2008 - 2099
    	MM : 01 - 12
    	DD : 01 - 31

The block under "Format" is actually just explaining the settings at the top. We (should) use the RTC and Zone information to figure out more exact timing specs for the files taken from the Camera's drive.

/DCIM/100MEDIA/ contains the .MOV video files that are readily viewable in Quicktime for Mac.

JVC Everio GZ-HD40U

It has two modes of operation when connected to a computer via USB. "Playback on PC" and "Backup on PC" both seem to have the same function on a Mac (OSX Snow Leopard) as both show the camera's file structure. This device has an SD card slot that will show up as a separate drive letter.

/DCIM/100JVCSO/ contains still images

/PRIVATE/ looks like it contains configuration files for different modes

/PRIVATE/XML/ looks like it contains a history log of some sort, requires more investigation.

/SD_VIDEO/PRGxxx/ where xxx is some number (such as 003 or 010) has .TOD and .MOI files with matching names. MOI files are always 33KB, TOD files probably contain the stream data and are variable in size. Judging from the folder title I think these are the standard def video files. However, I can not find the HD video files... which would be expected in AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM. There is also a .PGI file; not sure what this does. In /SD_VIDEO/ there is a folder called MGR_INFO that has the files "MGR_DATA" and "PRG_MGR"

Video files on the device seem to created when the recording is completed, not when it is started. Can we guarantee that the date recorded is the actual end time? The Camera uses it's system time to make this timestamp. We should find a way to get into those .MOI files as I have a hunch that it contains metadata.

Canon VIXIA HG21

When mounted, the camera will have a drive visible. It will have an external hard drive icon. This device has an SD card slot that will show up as a separate drive letter (and will have a removable media icon).
