feat(spec): refuse unknown environment variables under an application prefix - #1609
unknown_flags "error" catches a misspelled flag, but a misspelled or stale environment variable (MOQ_LISTEN_TLS_CRET=…, or a variable whose flag was renamed two releases ago) is read by nobody, and the program quietly runs on its defaults. That hurts most in deployments, where configuration arrives through systemd units, container manifests, or Helm values and nobody watches the command line.
A CLI can now name the prefix it owns. A parse then refuses every variable under that prefix that the spec doesn't declare, and names all of them at once.
With MOQ_PROT and MOQ_TSL set, a derived CLI prints this and exits 2:
error: unknown environment variables under 'MOQ_':
MOQ_PROT
MOQ_TSL
For more information, try '--help'.
usage-lib's Parser (and therefore usage exec and friends) returns Unknown environment variables under MOQ_: MOQ_PROT, MOQ_TSL.
What counts as known
Every env, env_fallback, and deprecated_env anywhere in the command tree: every subcommand, flattened group, and clause, not only the command that ran. A variable meant for serve is not a typo when the user runs publish.
Variables read by config properties, including those of a derive's config = Settings type.
Names in allow, for variables read outside the spec, such as by a library crate.
Behavior
It's opt-in. Without unknown_env, nothing changes.
The prefix only scopes the check and never builds a name, so every variable stays spelled out in full where it's declared. This isn't clap's env_prefix.
A deprecated name keeps its deprecation warning instead of becoming an error.
--help and --version are answered before the check runs.
On Windows, names are compared case-insensitively. A variable name that isn't valid UTF-8 is reported in a lossy spelling instead of causing a panic.
usage-lib checks the environment map passed to Parser::with_env when there is one, and the process environment otherwise.
When a view promotes a command to its own executable, the rest of the CLI's declared names still count as known there.
API additions (no breaking changes)
usage-lib: Spec::unknown_env, SpecUnknownEnv, and UsageErr::UnknownEnv.
usage-argv: an env module (declared_names, unknown, refuse_unknown), Error::UnknownEnv with an UnknownEnv payload, and diagnostic::Code::UnknownEnv.
The new variants go on enums that are already #[non_exhaustive], and no public struct gained a field, so cargo semver-checks passes.
The derive appends the unknown_env node to its emitted KDL, so docs, completions, and usage-lib see the same declaration.
Validation
conformance/tests/unknown_env.rs runs one derived CLI through both the derive and usage-lib (parsing the KDL the derive emits). It checks that both report the same variables, that the declaration survives a KDL round trip, and what a real parse prints.
Unit tests in usage-lib cover parsing, the round trip, and parse errors.
jouet test --affected passed: 2727 tests.
Clippy is clean on the touched crates. The workspace-wide clippy step fails on a duplicated_attributes error in benches/shadows/pitchfork, and that same error is on main already.
The check costs nothing at run time unless a CLI opts in, but the new code is in every binary. perf / instruction-count measured startup (usage --help) at 1,004,665 → 1,018,065 instructions (+1.33%, over the 1% gate) and markdown at +0.70%. Wall time for startup went from 1.50 to 1.51ms. The cost was not profiled. The likely cause is the larger binary, since none of the new code runs during --help. It is accepted as is, and the gate is unchanged.
Not in this PR
Go parser enforcement. Until it lands, usage generate go refuses a spec that declares unknown_env rather than generating a parser that would ignore it. The infallible usage::go::generate cannot return an error, so it still ignores the policy. feat(go): refuse undeclared environment variables in generated parsers #1612 adds the enforcement and removes the refusal.
AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-opus-5-5; version: 2.1.316.
Medium Risk
Opt-in, but when enabled every successful parse path scans the environment and can fail startup on config typos; Windows case-folding and mount/allow edge cases need careful review.
Overview
Adds opt-in unknown_env so a CLI can reject every undeclared variable under a declared prefix (with an allow list), reporting all typos in one failure—mirroring unknown_flags "error" for deployment config.
usage-lib gains KDL unknown_env, SpecUnknownEnv, parse-time validation (skipped for help/version; respects with_env vs process env; includes mounted commands only when the parse walked them), view promotion merges host env names into allow, and UsageErr::UnknownEnv.
usage-argv adds the env module (declared_names, unknown, refuse_unknown), Error::UnknownEnv, and diagnostic Code::UnknownEnv with stderr listing (no usage block).
The derive accepts root-only #[usage(unknown_env(prefix = "…", allow("…")))], emits the KDL node, and runs refuse_unknown in check (after help/version, with config env names included).
Go generation now errors if the spec declares unknown_env until the Go parser supports it. Docs and conformance/tests/unknown_env.rs keep argv and lib behavior aligned.

The feature has one bounded compatibility gap: external callers of the public Go generator can produce parsers that ignore unknown_env. The CLI generator rejects these specs, and supplied environment maps now reject mismatched Windows spellings rather than silently ignoring them.

The current check only confirms that the error omits EX_PROT. If --help stopped being recognized, the parser would return unexpected word: --help, which also omits EX_PROT, and the test would still pass. Asserting that the error contains the help page's Usage: line makes the test fail in that case.

Strengthen the `--help` test around `Parser::parse` by asserting that the
returned error contains the help page’s `Usage:` line, in addition to confirming
it omits `EX_PROT`. This ensures the test detects when `--help` is treated as an
unexpected word.
Assert the EXUSSL deprecation warning under unknownenv.
Assert the EXU_SSL deprecation warning under unknown_env.
a_parse_refuses_every_unknown_variable_at_once parses publish, so the serve flag that declares EXU_SSL is never selected. The test also never reads the warnings. A change that drops the DeprecatedEnv warning for EXU_SSL would not fail this test.
Add a serve parse in the same test, before the typo block. Check that the collected warnings contain an entry with kind DeprecatedEnv and name EXU_SSL. Keep the parse in this test, because the test sets process-wide environment variables. Do not assert an exact warning count. EXU_JOBS_OLD is also set and may add its own deprecated-alias entry.

The compiled CLI checker likewise uses full Unicode uppercase conversion, which may mark an undeclared Windows environment name as equivalent to a different declared name.
refuse_unknown may allow EX_SS instead of returning UnknownEnv.
This can occur when: On Windows, compiled metadata declares EX_ß and the process environment contains EX_SS under an EX_ policy.

Update same_env to avoid full Unicode uppercase conversion on Windows, which can
expand characters and equate distinct environment names. Use a comparison that
preserves Windows case-insensitive semantics without treating EX_ß and EX_SS as
equivalent, so refuse_unknown returns UnknownEnv for the undeclared name.

Add a mixed-case Windows check to the conformance test.
Every name in this test uses the same case as its declaration. On Windows, a case-sensitive comparison would report EXU_Port as unknown even though it is declared as EXU_PORT, and this test would not catch it. Add a mixed-case name on Windows only, because on other platforms EXU_Port is a different variable.

#1609 refuses unknown_env in Go generation until the Go parser enforces it;
this PR does, so the guard and its test go. The Go check now also follows
usage-lib on names that are not UTF-8: the prefix is matched on the valid
head, such a name is never a declared one, and two are one only byte for
byte. Ties in the folded sort fall back to the raw bytes, as in lib.

Add a Windows-only lowercase-prefix case to the typo check.
The Windows check at lines 119-122 uses an uppercase EXU_ prefix. The typo names at lines 126-129 also use uppercase prefixes. Add an assertion for case-variant deduplication on Windows.
On Windows, the unknown-name list folds case before it removes duplicates. The typo list repeats only one exact spelling, so a change to exact comparison would still pass this test. #1612)
Stacked on #1609, which adds `unknown_env` to usage-lib,
usage-argv and the derive. This PR brings the same check to the Go
parser that `usage generate go` emits. Before this, generated Go ignored
the node and still filled flags from the environment without question.
## What users get
A spec that declares
```kdl
unknown_env prefix="MOQ_" {
allow "MOQ_VAAPI_DEVICE"
}
flag "--port <port>" env="MOQ_PORT"
```
now generates a `Parse` that fails when the process environment holds a
`MOQ_` variable that nothing reads:
```
$ MOQ_PROT=8080 MOQ_TSL=1 moq serve
error: unknown environment variables under `MOQ_`: `MOQ_PROT`, `MOQ_TSL`
```
A variable counts as known, the same as in usage-lib, if any of these
declares it:
- an `env`, `env_fallback` or `deprecated_env` on any flag or argument
anywhere in the command tree, clauses included
- a `config` property's `env`, `envs` or `deprecated_envs`
- the `allow` list
Every offender is reported at once, sorted. On Windows the comparison
folds case with Unicode rules, and a variable set in two different cases
is reported once. Help and version are answered before the check, so
`--help` still works with a typo in the environment. The check runs
before required flags and arguments are checked, because a misspelled
variable is the likelier reason a required flag is missing.
## How it works
- **Generator** (`lib/src/go`): emits `UnknownEnvPrefix` and
`UnknownEnvKnown`. The known list is computed at generation time with
usage-lib's `declared_env_names`, because a generated package carries
tables, not the spec's `config`. Specs without `unknown_env` generate
exactly what they did before.
- **Runtime** (`go/argv`):
- `UnknownEnv(prefix, known, names)` is a pure function over any list of
names, so it can be tested without touching the process environment.
- `RefuseUnknownEnv` returns the error, and `EnvNames` reads the
process.
- The new error code is `CodeUnknownEnv`. `Error.Name` holds the prefix
and `Error.Names` the offenders.
- **Docs**: `docs/go/parser.md` gains an "Unknown environment variables"
section.
## Limits
- The Go generator does not support `mount`, so it can't know the
variables a mounted command declares. Rather than generate a parser that
would reject them while usage-lib accepts them, `usage generate go`
fails for a spec that has both `unknown_env` and a `mount`.
- The shared conformance corpus has no `unknown_env` vector yet. The Go
behaviour is covered by its own tests instead.
## Validation
- `go/conformance/generated_unknown_env_test.go` generates a package,
compiles it, and parses against the real environment. It checks:
- variables declared by another command, deprecated, read by config, or
allowed are all accepted
- every offender is reported, sorted
- the error comes ahead of a missing required flag
- help and version still answer
- Unit tests in `go/argv/env_test.go` cover the check and its messages.
- A generator test in `lib/src/go` checks that every kind of declaration
reaches `UnknownEnvKnown`.
- `cargo test --workspace` and `go test ./...` pass on Linux. The
Windows case-folding path only type-checks here (`GOOS=windows go vet`);
its tests were not run on Windows.

reading the process environment. Unknown-variable errors take precedence
over missing required arguments; help and version responses remain
available.
* Generation rejects this setting when the command tree contains mounted
commands.
* **Documentation**
* Documented the setting, which names are considered known, and how
errors are reported.

Closes #1607.
unknown_flags "error"catches a misspelled flag, but a misspelled or stale environment variable (MOQ_LISTEN_TLS_CRET=…, or a variable whose flag was renamed two releases ago) is read by nobody, and the program quietly runs on its defaults. That hurts most in deployments, where configuration arrives through systemd units, container manifests, or Helm values and nobody watches the command line.A CLI can now name the prefix it owns. A parse then refuses every variable under that prefix that the spec doesn't declare, and names all of them at once.
Rust CLIs declare it on the root struct:
With
MOQ_PROTandMOQ_TSLset, a derived CLI prints this and exits 2:usage-lib's
Parser(and thereforeusage execand friends) returnsUnknown environment variables under MOQ_: MOQ_PROT, MOQ_TSL.What counts as known
env,env_fallback, anddeprecated_envanywhere in the command tree: every subcommand, flattened group, and clause, not only the command that ran. A variable meant forserveis not a typo when the user runspublish.configproperties, including those of a derive'sconfig = Settingstype.allow, for variables read outside the spec, such as by a library crate.Behavior
unknown_env, nothing changes.env_prefix.--helpand--versionare answered before the check runs.Parser::with_envwhen there is one, and the process environment otherwise.API additions (no breaking changes)
Spec::unknown_env,SpecUnknownEnv, andUsageErr::UnknownEnv.envmodule (declared_names,unknown,refuse_unknown),Error::UnknownEnvwith anUnknownEnvpayload, anddiagnostic::Code::UnknownEnv.#[non_exhaustive], and no public struct gained a field, socargo semver-checkspasses.unknown_envnode to its emitted KDL, so docs, completions, and usage-lib see the same declaration.Validation
conformance/tests/unknown_env.rsruns one derived CLI through both the derive and usage-lib (parsing the KDL the derive emits). It checks that both report the same variables, that the declaration survives a KDL round trip, and what a real parse prints.jouet test --affectedpassed: 2727 tests.duplicated_attributeserror inbenches/shadows/pitchfork, and that same error is onmainalready.perf / instruction-countmeasuredstartup(usage --help) at 1,004,665 → 1,018,065 instructions (+1.33%, over the 1% gate) andmarkdownat +0.70%. Wall time forstartupwent from 1.50 to 1.51ms. The cost was not profiled. The likely cause is the larger binary, since none of the new code runs during--help. It is accepted as is, and the gate is unchanged.Not in this PR
usage generate gorefuses a spec that declaresunknown_envrather than generating a parser that would ignore it. The infallibleusage::go::generatecannot return an error, so it still ignores the policy. feat(go): refuse undeclared environment variables in generated parsers #1612 adds the enforcement and removes the refusal.AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-opus-5-5; version: 2.1.316.

Note
Medium Risk
Opt-in, but when enabled every successful parse path scans the environment and can fail startup on config typos; Windows case-folding and mount/allow edge cases need careful review.
Overview
Adds opt-in
unknown_envso a CLI can reject every undeclared variable under a declared prefix (with anallowlist), reporting all typos in one failure—mirroringunknown_flags "error"for deployment config.usage-lib gains KDL
unknown_env,SpecUnknownEnv, parse-time validation (skipped for help/version; respectswith_envvs process env; includes mounted commands only when the parse walked them), view promotion merges host env names intoallow, andUsageErr::UnknownEnv.usage-argv adds the
envmodule (declared_names,unknown,refuse_unknown),Error::UnknownEnv, and diagnosticCode::UnknownEnvwith stderr listing (no usage block).The derive accepts root-only
#[usage(unknown_env(prefix = "…", allow("…")))], emits the KDL node, and runsrefuse_unknownincheck(after help/version, with config env names included).Go generation now errors if the spec declares
unknown_envuntil the Go parser supports it. Docs and conformance/tests/unknown_env.rs keep argv and lib behavior aligned.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit d4b4d7a. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
