  • Vite - Development server and build tool

📋 Prerequisites

  • Node.js (v16 or higher)
  • Basic knowledge of JavaScript
  • Understanding of 3D concepts (helpful but not required)

🛠️ Setup Instructions

  1. Clone or create the project directory

    mkdir 3d-solar-system
    cd 3d-solar-system
  2. Initialize the project

    npm init -y
    npm install three dat.gui
    npm install --save-dev vite
  3. Add scripts to package.json

    {
      "scripts": {
        "dev": "vite",
        "build": "vite build",
        "preview": "vite preview"
      }
    }
  4. Start development server

    npm run dev

🎯 Development Milestones

Milestone 1: Basic Solar System Foundation (Week 1)

Goal: Create a basic 3D scene with the Sun and inner planets

Deliverables:

  • Set up Three.js scene with camera, renderer, and lighting
  • Create the Sun as a glowing sphere at the center
  • Add Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars as textured spheres
  • Implement basic circular orbits around the Sun
  • Add simple rotation for each planet

Key Features:

  • ✅ 3D scene setup
  • ✅ Sun with emissive material
  • ✅ 4 inner planets with basic textures
  • ✅ Orbital motion (circular paths)
  • ✅ Planet rotation on their axes
  • ✅ Basic camera controls (orbit around scene)

Files to create:

  • index.html - Main HTML structure
  • style.css - Basic styling
  • main.js - Core Three.js setup and basic planets
  • planets.js - Planet data and creation functions

Milestone 2: Enhanced Visuals & Realistic Orbits (Week 2)

Goal: Improve visual quality and add realistic orbital mechanics

Deliverables:

  • Add all outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune)
  • Implement elliptical orbits with correct relative distances
  • Add realistic planet textures and bump maps
  • Create Saturn's ring system
  • Add asteroid belt visualization
  • Implement realistic orbital speeds and planet sizes (scaled)
  • Add textures to the planets using image files

Key Features:

  • ✅ Complete solar system (8 planets + Pluto optional)
  • ✅ Elliptical orbits with realistic ratios
  • ✅ High-quality planet textures
  • ✅ Saturn's rings with transparency
  • ✅ Asteroid belt particle system
  • ✅ Scaled planet sizes and orbital distances
  • ✅ Realistic orbital periods (time-accelerated)
  • ✅ Improved lighting and shadows

New Files:

  • orbits.js - Orbital mechanics calculations
  • textures.js - Texture loading and management
  • asteroids.js - Asteroid belt system

Milestone 3: Interactive Features & Polish (Week 3)

Goal: Add interactivity, UI, and educational content

Deliverables:

  • Interactive planet selection and information panels
  • Time controls (pause, speed up, slow down)
  • Camera modes (follow planet, free roam, solar system overview)
  • Planet information display (size, distance, orbital period, etc.)
  • Search functionality to quickly navigate to planets
  • Performance optimizations and mobile responsiveness
  • On click of a planet, zoom in on planet and display planet education description and other info
  • Polish visuals (Lighting, backgrounds)

Key Features:

  • ✅ Click-to-select planets with info panels
  • ✅ Time control slider (pause/play/speed)
  • ✅ Multiple camera modes and smooth transitions
  • ✅ Detailed planet information and statistics
  • ✅ Search bar for quick planet navigation
