PR walkthrough: Open the visual walkthrough

Graceful shutdown could leave a journal failure without terminal evidence while SQL recorded an unknown outcome, blocking a restored native conversation. Recovery now reconciles matching interrupted work and admission fences without replaying the old prompt or inventing completion.

Changes

  • Mark the original child as stopping before adapter teardown, preserve deterministic provider failures, and drain terminal updates before closing the journal writer.
  • Preserve historical journal labels and SQL uncertainty while retiring authenticated interrupted work. Read stopped-journal submission metadata separately from proof that work was retired.
  • Use the same guarded reconciliation during restart, explicit Resume and admission to an already loaded native conversation. Require evidence that the original owner is dead; preserve independent live or unknown owners.
  • Resolve matching missing, stale or incomplete recovery metadata and blocks atomically. Complete a matching prepared restore checkpoint and clear only the matching legacy composer error.
  • Repair existing canonical initial and continuation prompts without inventing a user-message association. Preserve their actual dispatch-attempt identity, reject deleted or changed canonical rows, and persist an honest unknown outcome for proven interrupted dispatch.
  • Add real child shutdown, cross-store state-matrix, repeated recovery, retained-journal and transactional SQLite/PostgreSQL regressions. Keep original native conversations, hashes and event cursors intact.

Validation

Focused Go race checks cover producer shutdown, journal retirement, the 49-state-pair matrix, native lifecycle and SQL/orchestrator recovery. The four recovery regressions reported by CI now pass with race detection. Affected-package lint reported one nested-block warning; the correction and journal lint pass. CI also exposed empty reconstructed outcomes and internal prompts requiring nonexistent user-message rows. Both are fixed with passing focused SQL/orchestrator regressions; browser coverage now asserts restore without continuation replay. The remaining active-turn restart failure exposed initial prompts using execution IDs as dispatch attempts. That correlation is now preserved, with passing race regressions and a changed-attempt rejection control. A CI-exposed sidebar test substring collision now uses exact option names. Final head 1365fa26e3 passed all 55 CI checks, with zero unresolved review threads. Merged as bc0d3b9047.

Specification catalog and lint passed. Public recovery guidance is updated. All E2E and PostgreSQL validation run in CI; no local browser or E2E tests were run.

Checklist

  • One logical recovery change with regression coverage.
  • Public documentation impact checked and guidance updated.
  • Final-head CI and review-thread disposition complete.

Code Review — PR #4432

Reviewed head 0480dc32. 30 files, +1275/−36.

Findings

Suggestion (recommended, doesn't block)

  1. Misleading <nil> in error message — native_resume_proof.go:87

    • Issue: when nativeResumeRetirementIDs returns no error but non-empty IDs, the formatted message reads "native resume inventory has unsettled work: <nil>". The <nil> implies no error occurred, obscuring that the real problem is unretired submissions.
    • Fix: separate the two failure modes into distinct fmt.Errorf branches. Inline comment posted.
  2. Redundant deterministicPromptFailure extraction — submission_delivery.go:125–127

    • Issue: knownProviderFailure manually extracts deterministicPromptFailure even though isKnownSubmissionFailure already checks the same interface. The distinction matters only for the interrupted branch; a small helper (e.g. isDeterministicProviderFailure) would make the condition auditable in one pass.
    • Fix: extract helper or inline comment. Inline suggestion posted.
  3. Hard-coded timeout in shutdown test adapter — submission_shutdown_test.go:35

    • Issue: shutdownRequestAdapter.Close uses time.After(5 * time.Second) independent of the test's own deadline. On a slow CI box already near its 10 s limit, a stall here produces a confusing timeout error pointing at adapter teardown rather than the real cause.
    • Fix: thread the test context into the adapter and select on ctx.Done(). Inline suggestion posted.
  4. activeBackendSubmissions called three times in AcknowledgeNativeResumeDelivery — native_resume_delivery.go:87

    • Issue: reconcileNativeResumeSQLDispatch, validateNativeResumeSQLHistory, and nativeResumeInterruptedSubmissionIDs each issue a full activeBackendSubmissions query. The repeated reads are correct (post-reconcile rows are needed) but are unintentionally opaque.
    • Fix: thread the rows, or add a comment explaining why each fresh read is necessary. Inline note posted.

What's correct

The core logic holds up under close scrutiny:

  • Shutdown ordering: moving close(m.stopCh) before closeAdapter is correct. The dispatch goroutine can now observe d.Stopped closed before the *acp.RequestError arrives, guaranteeing SubmissionInterruptedUnknown instead of SubmissionFailed for graceful-shutdown aborts.
  • HasUnprovenOutcome: the inclusion of SubmissionFailed/Completed/Cancelled without terminal evidence is consistent with the spec's "legacy terminal label" disposition. The early-out for TerminalEventRetained || TerminalSequence != 0 correctly guards real terminal evidence.
  • canRetireSubmissionAtGeneration: widening from SubmissionInterruptedUnknown to HasUnprovenOutcome lets the journal retire legacy labels at the same generation without altering their recorded outcome. TestNativeResumeRetiresUnprovenTerminalLabelsWithoutChangingThem verifies state, payload, and hash preservation post-retire.
  • reconcileNativeResumeSQLDispatch guard: the explicit evidence.State != journal.SubmissionInterruptedUnknown check before peerMatchesUnknownHistory correctly blocks SQL dispatching + journal failed/completed/cancelled (model row "BBBRBBB"), preventing HasUnprovenOutcome's broader acceptance from mis-classifying stale dispatches.
  • State matrix: the TestNativeResumeCrossStoreStateDisposition table covers all 49 cross-store pairs and verifies no-state-change retirement, payload preservation, and repeat-recovery convergence. The disposition table is internally consistent with the spec.
  • ResolveSessionRecoveryBlockWithNativeEvidence: the transaction locks session_turns and agent_delivery_cursors before verifying the snapshot, preventing TOCTOU between GetNativeResumeDeliveryEvidence and block resolution. The inventory count check (count == len(retired)) ensures SQL and proof are in exact agreement.
  • PostgreSQL coverage: both TestNativeResumeAuthenticatedMissingBinding and TestPostgresNativeResumeAuthenticatedMissingBinding cover the same 11 scenarios; the openIsolatedPostgresMultiConn fixture correctly exercises multi-connection write paths.

Summary

Severity Count
Blocker 0
Suggestion 4

Verdict: Ready with suggestions — no blockers. The spec alignment, state-matrix coverage, and idempotency proofs are solid. The four inline suggestions are quality/observability improvements that can be addressed in a follow-up if preferred.

This change updates durable submission settlement, native-resume retirement, and recovery-block resolution. It preserves uncertain submission history and uses authenticated delivery evidence to validate and repair missing recovery associations.

Changes

Session Recovery Convergence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Publish shutdown interruption and settle dispatch
apps/backend/internal/agentctl/server/process/manager.go, apps/backend/internal/agentctl/server/process/submission_delivery.go, apps/backend/internal/agentctl/server/process/submission_shutdown_test.go, docs/plans/session-recovery-convergence/task-01-shutdown-settlement.md, docs/specs/platform/system-design/session-recovery-convergence.md
The manager signals shutdown before adapter teardown. Dispatch settlement handles cancellation and shutdown with a bounded context, while retaining deterministic failures and terminal evidence. Tests check the resulting journal state and prevent redispatch of uncertain submissions.
Classify and retire unproven outcomes
apps/backend/internal/agentctl/journal/*, apps/backend/internal/agent/runtime/lifecycle/native_resume_*.go, apps/backend/internal/orchestrator/restart_submission_reconciliation.go
The journal recognizes interrupted-unknown, failed, completed, and cancelled submissions without terminal evidence. Native-resume acknowledgement validates SQL and peer history before retirement. Reconciliation preserves submission state and rejects unsupported or mismatched evidence.
Build and route native-resume evidence
apps/backend/internal/task/models/native_resume_delivery.go, apps/backend/internal/agent/runtime/lifecycle/native_resume_proof.go, apps/backend/internal/backendapp/adapters_native_resume.go, apps/backend/internal/orchestrator/session_*, apps/backend/internal/orchestrator/native_resume_proof_test.go, docs/decisions/*, docs/plans/session-recovery-convergence/*, docs/public/operations.md, docs/specs/platform/*
The lifecycle manager provides a validated snapshot of delivery status, cursor, and submissions. The orchestrator requests that evidence during Resume recovery and passes it to the repository. Requirements, design records, plans, and tests describe and exercise this path.
Validate evidence and resolve recovery bindings atomically
apps/backend/internal/task/repository/sqlite/native_resume_binding.go, apps/backend/internal/task/repository/sqlite/native_resume_binding_test.go
The repository checks snapshot identity, submission inventory, cursor, recovery blocks, and authenticated notice state within a transaction. Tests cover matching evidence, mismatches, unresolved work, and rollback.

Recovery blocking still works as intended. The diagnostic for unsettled work can be misleading, and the fix is small and can be made before or after merge.

Do not wrap a nil error in the unsettled-work branch.

If nativeResumeRetirementIDs returns IDs with a nil error, the %v formats <nil>. The original error type is also lost because %v does not wrap it. Use %w only when err is non-nil, and give a clear message when IDs remain.
