PR walkthrough: Open the visual walkthrough

Large delivery backlogs were throttled by per-batch and per-pass sleeps, while upgrade backups rebuilt the entire SQLite database. Cleanup now runs continuously while it makes progress, and backup-only operations use incremental native page copying while retaining existing verification gates.

  • Small transactions, cancellation, maintenance admission, idle waiting and error backoff remain in place. Eligibility and recovery proofs are unchanged.
  • Explicit physical compaction still uses VACUUM INTO; page-copy backups preserve free pages.

Validation

  • Race tests passed for db, persistence, backups, database, maintenance, inventoryrepair and deliveryretention.
  • Historical sweep/protected-gap regressions and persistence store conformance passed.
  • Targeted golangci-lint: 0 issues; SQL guard passed.
  • Documentation, specification, harness and PR coverage checks passed.
  • New regressions reproduced rebuilding and premature waiting before the fix. Fixtures are small; no million-row test.
  • CI remediation: worker integration fixtures passed under the race detector; recovery browser failures reproduced, then all 4 affected desktop tests and the mobile recovery test passed with retries disabled.

Checklist

  • If I do not have repository write access and this is a large architectural change, I discussed the direction in a linked issue before opening this PR.
  • This PR contains one logical change; unrelated work is split into separate PRs.
  • I have performed a self-review of my code.
  • I have manually tested my changes and they work as expected.
  • My changes have tests that cover the new functionality and edge cases.
  • If my change touches UI files (apps/web/), I have added or updated Playwright e2e tests in apps/web/e2e/ and verified them with make test-e2e.
  • I checked whether this affects public docs in docs/public/** and updated them or noted why no docs change is needed.

Reviewed commit 2c56b4ca across all 31 changed files. No blockers. 3 suggestions.

The two core changes are sound:

  • SQLite page-copy backup: BackupSQLite correctly uses the native backup API, handles BUSY/LOCKED via remaining/PageCount comparison, always calls Finish(), and cleans up incomplete destinations on error. Callers that needed writer-blocking-free backups now correctly use pool.Reader().
  • Delivery retention drain: ContinuationPending fires only on budget-exhausted productive passes; quiet/busy-only passes return to the configured idle interval. Removing initialDelay and betweenBatches is correctly reflected in updated tests and specs.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Database Backups

    • SQLite backups now use consistent page-copy snapshots, preserving free pages rather than compacting the database during backup. Physical compaction remains a separate operation.
    • Snapshots are validated before installation, and failed copies are cleaned up without overwriting existing files.
  • Maintenance

    • Delivery-retention cleanup starts without an extra startup delay and continues promptly while productive work remains. When work is exhausted or maintenance is busy, it waits for the configured idle interval.

Walkthrough

The changes add native SQLite page-copy snapshots for backup-only operations and update delivery-retention scheduling to continue productive work without artificial startup or inter-batch delays. Explicit physical compaction still uses VACUUM INTO.

[High impact] Replaces database snapshot mechanism and changes delivery retention timing.

The PR appears safe to merge, with a non-blocking test gap around interrupted and contended backups.

Findings

  1. P2 Interrupted backups lack coverage ▶

Summary

Backup-only operations now copy SQLite pages instead of rebuilding the database. Delivery cleanup starts immediately and continues across bounded passes while it makes progress.

  • Backup-only SQLite jobs copy pages without compacting the database.
  • Delivery cleanup continues promptly while productive work remains.

Intentional behavior acknowledged by jcfs: page-copy backups preserve free pages; physical compaction remains separate.

Test cancellation after copying starts.

The pre-canceled context checks only the entry guard. It does not test cleanup after a partial page copy. Add a controlled in-progress cancellation case. Confirm that it removes the partial destination and releases the backup handles.

Findings

Reviewed commit 2c56b4ca. Two subsystems changed: SQLite page-copy backup and delivery retention scheduling.

Suggestion (recommended, doesn't block)

  1. BUSY/LOCKED retries have no observable signal — internal/db/sqlite_backup.go:100

    • Issue: the 10 ms retry loop for BUSY/LOCKED is silent — no log, metric, or counter.
    • Why: under heavy write load a backup can stall for tens of seconds with no diagnostic. The only escape is context cancellation, which works, but operators have nothing to observe or alert on.
    • Fix: increment a per-backup counter on each no-progress iteration and log at Debug after the first hit and periodically thereafter. A simple busyRetries int captured before the loop is enough. (See inline comment.)
  2. Hardcoded 71 in draining test — internal/task/deliveryretention/worker_continuation_test.go:29

    • Issue: the expected count is correct but unexplained.
    • Why: it's derived from passBudget, batchBudget, and the 100 ms clock advance — if any constant changes the test breaks with a number that looks arbitrary.
    • Fix: add a one-line comment: // 46 retention calls/pass × 1.5 passes = 70 productive + call 71 idle. (See inline comment.)
  3. No test for BUSY/LOCKED retry branch in copySQLitePages — internal/db/sqlite_backup.go:81

    • Issue: the spec (sqlite-snapshot-copy.md) explicitly calls out BUSY/LOCKED and the remaining/PageCount heuristic. The test in snapshot_copy_test.go covers cancellation and closed-source errors but not this path.
    • Why: the branch is a real production path when the writer holds a long transaction during an upgrade backup.
    • Fix: add a test that interleaves a write transaction on the source while the backup copy runs and asserts the copy still completes correctly. This is non-trivial to wire but the spec treats it as a first-class scenario.

Notes on correctness (all clean)

  • The copySQLitePages no-progress check (Remaining() >= remaining && PageCount() == total) correctly handles all three cases: normal progress, BUSY/LOCKED, and a source that grew mid-backup.
  • defer backup.Finish() joined with errors.Join is correct: Finish is always called; its error is propagated even on success.
  • Returning ctx.Err() after done=true is correct — a cancel between the final step and installation is conservatively treated as a failure, which prevents installing a copy whose provenance can't be proven.
  • Switching retention_preparation.go from pool.Writer() to pool.Reader() is a meaningful improvement: the reader doesn't block the single writer during what can be a minutes-long operation on a large database.
  • ContinuationPending only fires when the pass budget is exhausted with actual committed work, not on a quiet pass or a busy-only pass. The spec requirement AC-PLATFORM-DELIVERY-RETENTION-005.6 is met.
  • Removing initialDelay is safe: maintenance admission (maintenance.ForPool) prevents conflicts with startup backup/compaction, and the worker's readiness check handles schema-not-ready cases.

Summary

Severity Count
Blocker 0
Suggestion 3

Verdict: Ready to merge — suggestions are minor observability and test-documentation improvements, none block correctness.
