A block used to reach the database in several commits: the state edits in one transaction, the assignment stamps after it, the block row in another, with ZK and L2PS writes in between. A crash between any two left balances and nonces ahead of the chain.
This PR makes one database transaction cover all of it. The apply runs in memory and hands back a pending write; insertBlock writes that pending state, the fork hooks and the block row in the same transaction, then runs side effects (points, L2PS bookkeeping) after the commit. Handlers that write their own tables (ZK nullifiers and commitments, validator stake, governance) stage those writes for the block's transaction instead of issuing them during the apply. The same path is used by consensus and by both sync paths, so a rejected or failed block never touches state and nothing has to be rolled back.
Design notes and the per-edit-type table are in docs/design/atomic-block-apply.md.
Tests
blockApplyAtomicity.test.ts injects a failure at each write phase of the block transaction and checks nothing is durable, no side effect ran and a retry applies cleanly.
stagedWrites.test.ts checks the stake and governance handlers stage instead of save.
Sync and adoption suites updated for the new path.
New rehearsal scenario 11-sigkill-replay runs the four-node devnet with a stream of transfers, SIGKILLs nodes mid-block, restarts them and checks for partial state and convergence. Passed locally, four rounds.
Upgrade notes
This PR changes the outcome of zk_attestationadd. All testnet validators must upgrade together.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Reliability
Block processing now commits transaction effects and block records together, avoiding partial state changes when a block fails.
Synchronization and consensus use the same commit behavior, helping nodes recover consistently after interruptions.
Identity Verification
Identity attestations are checked before acceptance, and nullifiers are recorded only when the containing block commits.
Testing
Added interrupted-node recovery checks, including verification that nodes catch up and agree on block and account state.
NOTE: All validators running this code should upgrade together
- commit a block's state edits, assignment stamps, deferred writes and block row in one database transaction
- stage the writes of handlers that own their tables for the block's transaction instead of issuing them
- add a fault-injection test and a SIGKILL replay scenario on the devnet
GCR edits and L2PS proof updates are staged for commitment with their block. Sync and consensus pass pending state to block insertion. Tests and a SIGKILL replay rehearsal check commit failures, restarts, and node state agreement. The Docker ignore rule also matches paths beginning with .demos_identity.
GCR application collects deferred writes and can return pending state. ZK, validator, and governance edits use staged caches and transaction-scoped writes. Identity-attestation checks validate without marking nullifiers. Network-upgrade version lookup uses Repository.maximum.
Commit pending state with blocks src/libs/blockchain/chain.ts, src/libs/blockchain/chainBlocks.ts, src/libs/blockchain/gcr/gcrWriteMutex.ts, src/libs/blockchain/blockApplyAtomicity.test.ts
Block insertion accepts pending GCR state and writes it within the block transaction. A shared mutex serializes GCR writes, and post-commit effects run after a successful transaction. Tests cover repository-write failures and retry.
Use pending state in consensus and sync src/libs/consensus/v2/PoRBFT.ts, src/libs/blockchain/routines/Sync.ts, src/libs/l2ps/*, src/libs/debug/nonceTrace.ts, src/libs/consensus/v2/PoRBFT.adoptionSync.test.ts, src/libs/blockchain/routines/Sync.verification.test.ts
Consensus and sync pass pending edits to block insertion after checking transaction outcomes. L2PS proof updates join pending state, and nonce tracing reads pending account state. Updated tests cover rejected outcomes, orphaned assignments, and insertion failures.
Test and rehearse atomic application src/libs/blockchain/gcr/stagedWrites.test.ts, docs/design/atomic-block-apply.md, testing/forks/rehearsal/*
Tests cover staged writes, block-commit failures, sync failures, and adoption behavior. Design documentation describes transaction boundaries. The replay rehearsal kills and restarts validators, then checks catch-up and state agreement.

LoadingMerge Risk: High · up to 78138
Concurrent identity updates may be silently overwritten, and committed proofs may remain without their L2PS batch bookkeeping. These data-integrity risks should be fixed before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 78138
The change substantially improves crash consistency. However, nodes running different versions can derive different transaction outcomes, and interruption after a successful commit can leave confirmation records unfinished without an established recovery path.
Retained concerns
High · security · inferred: Nullifier ownership changes unconditionally from admission/apply to block commit. A base-version node that admitted an uncommitted attestation retains its nullifier, while a head-version node does not. They can therefore derive failed versus confirmed outcomes for the same attestation; synchronization rejects disagreeing statuses. The base already permitted admission-dependent outcomes, but this PR creates a version-dependent transition even when nodes receive the same admission traffic. No effective activation or minimum-version control was found for this transition, while the design document describes it as requiring no fork. The demonstrated consequence is ledger-agreement or synchronization failure during an uncoordinated rollout, not a bypass of proof verification.
Medium · reliability · inferred: L2PS batch-record creation, confirmation-history updates, and mempool cleanup now run from an in-memory callback after the block and applied-proof status are durable. Interruption in that window can leave ledger changes committed but confirmation bookkeeping unfinished. Applied proofs are excluded from subsequent pending-proof selection, duplicate block insertion returns without replaying afterCommit, and callback errors are logged rather than durably scheduled. The inspected aggregator cleanup does not reconstruct these missing records. Error swallowing existed before this PR, but moving this work beyond block durability introduces a committed-but-unprocessed recovery state without an established owner. Duplicate expenditure was not demonstrated.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The material exposure concerns agreement among nodes sharing a ledger and consistency of each node's persisted proof and confirmation records. The rollout trigger requires a valid identity proof and differing admission histories or versions, rather than administrative database access. No cross-environment or additional infrastructure authority was established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A submitter can present a valid attestation to both versions before commitment. The base admission path consumes the nullifier, whereas the head only checks it. Subsequent application can fail on the base node and succeed on the head node, producing status disagreement. This is a conditional compatibility path, not evidence of forged proofs, double spending, or an observed network incident.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Check-only admission retains cryptographic, current-root, and committed-nullifier checks. Application uses block-scoped commitment/nullifier claim maps, serializes ZK edits, restores staged claims after failed transactions, and revalidates attestations through the committing manager before marking nullifiers. Pending overlays copy claims and clone touched rows, providing isolation between successive sets.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Post-commit bookkeeping failure can strand confirmation history and its batch record without undoing the authorized ledger update. The normal aggregator selects executed rows, while submitted rows have already become batched; its inspected cleanup paths do not replay missing confirmation work. This supports a recovery-ownership concern, but not a claim that stale mempool rows automatically execute twice.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define coordinated activation and explicit handling of pre-upgrade admission-time nullifier records before relying on uniform transaction outcomes across upgraded nodes.
proposed — Give required post-commit bookkeeping durable, idempotent ownership keyed by block and proof, so restart or retry can finish missing records without reapplying ledger edits.

Summary
The PR commits block state and block records in one database transaction.
A block and the state it produces commit together.
Proof, stake, and governance records join the block commit.
A rehearsal restarts nodes after they are killed mid-block.
All five earlier, unnumbered findings are addressed: duplicate ZK claims are tracked, governance reads staged rows, failed transactions restore staged stakes, L2PS preserves all supported caches, and transfers continue through the crash-test kill window. No new actionable issues were found in the changes since the previous review.

Critical · Stability & Availability · Heavy lift
A duplicate commitment inside one block makes the block transaction fail on the primary key.
The findOne check reads committed rows only. Two zk_commitmentadd transactions with the same normalizedCommitment in one block both pass it, and both return a deferred insert. The second insert violates the commitmentHash primary key inside the block transaction. The block commit then fails with the same consensus exit and sync halt described for the attestation handler. Before this change, the immediate save caught 23505, and only the second transaction failed.
Fix: track the commitments claimed during the apply in GCREntityCaches. Key them in partitionIndependentTxs so the later transaction fails deterministically during the apply. If a primary-key error at commit must stay non-fatal, use .orIgnore() on the insert. That alone is not enough, because the second transaction would still be reported as successful.

Reserve ZK nullifiers during block apply.
Two zk_attestationadd transactions with the same nullifier can both pass apply because checkIdentityAttestation does not reserve the nullifier. Their deferred writes then run in block order. The first inserts the nullifier, and the second throws ZK proof verification failed at commit. This aborts the atomic block transaction. Consensus treats that error as fatal, and sync rethrows it, so the certified block can fail on every node and on every retry.
Record the canonical nullifier returned by checkIdentityAttestation in a block-scoped GCREntityCaches set. Reject a later transaction during apply when that set already contains the nullifier. Include the same canonical value in a zkn:<nullifier> partition key so conflicting transactions run sequentially in canonical block order. Restore the set with the existing per-transaction snapshot when apply fails.

Review of b4b8e07 for rc.5. The design holds up: every apply path (forge, committed-block adoption, both sync paths) goes through insertBlock(..., pending), state and block row commit in one Postgres transaction, lastBlockNumber/lastBlockHash move only after commit, no network calls or re-entrant gcrWriteMutex inside the transaction, and native_tables_hashes are unaffected. No regression found against signing record/restart floor, commitLock, committeeBinding, sync re-verify (G3-18), value-edit checks, the fork-schedule watch or genesis enforcement. PR tests pass locally (blockApplyAtomicity 8/8, stagedWrites 15/15, Sync.verification 16/16, PoRBFT.adoptionSync 7/7) plus the related GCR, ZK, staking and fork suites.
Before merge:
Governance tests regress, CI does not see it.computeNextVersion now calls repo.maximum("version") (GCRNetworkUpgradeRoutines.ts:199-203), but the mocks in tests/governance/applyProposalEffectiveAtBlock.test.ts and tests/governance/e2e.test.ts only provide createQueryBuilder().getRawOne -> TypeError: repo.maximum is not a function (4/4 -> 2/4, and the below-threshold rejection test in e2e). stagedWrites.test.ts adds 3 tsc errors (lines 21, 404, 405). CI runs only test:consensus, so it stays green. Fix: add maximum to the mocks and fix the test types.
ZK attestation outcome changes without a fork. rc.4 marks the nullifier at admission, so apply fails the tx with "Nullifier already used"; with this PR admission only checks and apply confirms the tx and marks the nullifier. On a network mixing rc.4 and rc.5 validators the same zk_attestationadd is CONFIRMED on one side and FAILED on the other. Harmless for a mainnet genesis on rc.5 only; for testnet please state in the PR that all validators upgrade together (or gate it).
Follow-ups (not blocking, data loss rather than a split):
Post-commit side effects (chainBlocks.ts:514-519, afterCommit: points, L2PS processAppliedProofs, mempool prune, staked-set refresh) now run after commit and outside gcrWriteMutex. A crash between commit and afterCommit loses the points and the L2PS batch bookkeeping for good. Suggest moving the deterministic points writes into the deferred write, or a durable post-commit marker replayed at startup.
gcr_main rows are loaded at apply and saved as whole entities at insert, so the window in which an unlocked RPC-side write (point awards, referrals, ensureGCRForUser) gets overwritten is longer than before. Balances and nonces are not affected.
Pre-existing, still outside the block transaction: ensureGCRForUser(address) without a manager in rewardsRoutines.ts:11, and markProofRejected in L2PSConsensus.applyProof.
Pushed 7813810 for review item 1: the governance mocks now provide repo.maximum (matching computeNextVersion), and the three tsc errors in stagedWrites.test.ts are fixed. applyProposalEffectiveAtBlock 4/4, stagedWrites 15/15, blockApplyAtomicity 8/8, Sync.verification 16/16, PoRBFT.adoptionSync 7/7. The remaining governance failures (e2e staking happy path, concurrentProposals 1, deriveFeesFromParameters, snapshotWeightIntegrity) fail the same way on stabilisatione30ee46, so they are not from this PR.
Item 2 is still open: please state in the description that all validators upgrade together (or gate the nullifier change), since zk_attestationadd confirms on rc.5 and fails on rc.4.

Hold gcrWriteMutex across the identity handler's load and save.
handleIdentityAssign loads a GCRMain row, applies the identity change, and saves the whole entity without gcrWriteMutex. A block commit can save its earlier cached copy of the same account in between. The block save then writes back the stale identity field and overwrites the committed identity change. The handler still returns success.

Crash after block commit leaves L2PS bookkeeping permanently incomplete.
insertBlock commits the block, its pending state, and the applied proof marker in one transaction. The L2PS bookkeeping runs later, in pendingGCR.afterCommit(). An interruption in that window leaves the block and the proof marked applied as durable. The bookkeeping never runs.
Specifically:
processAppliedProofs is queued in pending.sideEffects (src/libs/l2ps/L2PSConsensus.ts:220).
markProofApplied is queued in pending.deferredWrites (src/libs/l2ps/L2PSConsensus.ts:419-420). It commits with the block.
afterCommit() runs the queued callbacks after the commit (src/libs/blockchain/chainBlocks.ts:517-519).
If the process stops in that window, the following state results:
The block and its state edits are durable.
The proof has status = "applied".
L2PS mempool entries are not deleted.
The L2PS transaction statuses are not updated.
No L1 batch transaction is created for these proofs.
Nothing repairs this state:
getProofsForBlock selects only status: "pending" (src/libs/l2ps/L2PSProofManager.ts:209), so the applied proof is not selected again.
rollbackProofsForBlock (src/libs/l2ps/L2PSConsensus.ts:591) has no caller in src.
No startup replay of applied proofs with missing bookkeeping was found.
The bookkeeping includes L1 batch creation. Its duration widens the window. A durable retry record is needed. Either persist the bookkeeping inside the block transaction, or record a retry marker that a startup routine replays. The correction needs a design decision, so this comment gives no code diff.

This PR makes one database transaction cover all of it. The apply runs in memory and hands back a pending write;
insertBlockwrites that pending state, the fork hooks and the block row in the same transaction, then runs side effects (points, L2PS bookkeeping) after the commit. Handlers that write their own tables (ZK nullifiers and commitments, validator stake, governance) stage those writes for the block's transaction instead of issuing them during the apply. The same path is used by consensus and by both sync paths, so a rejected or failed block never touches state and nothing has to be rolled back.Design notes and the per-edit-type table are in
docs/design/atomic-block-apply.md.Tests
blockApplyAtomicity.test.tsinjects a failure at each write phase of the block transaction and checks nothing is durable, no side effect ran and a retry applies cleanly.stagedWrites.test.tschecks the stake and governance handlers stage instead of save.11-sigkill-replayruns the four-node devnet with a stream of transfers, SIGKILLs nodes mid-block, restarts them and checks for partial state and convergence. Passed locally, four rounds.Upgrade notes
