feat(l2ps): restart recovery for channel and RFQ sessions - #166
HaykK-Solicy wants to merge 4 commits into
Conversation
Channel and RFQ session state lived only in memory, so a process restart lost an in-flight negotiation with no way to resume it. Add checkpoint()/restore()/close() to both ChannelSession and RfqSession. checkpoint() returns a plain-JSON snapshot (live demos client, CH-6 registry, and send callback are re-injected on restore, never serialized). restore() rebuilds the exact prior state: the channel resumes at its sequence floor so a replayed older message is still rejected, and it does NOT re-register the channelId (the id was registered before the restart). A restored terminal negotiation stays terminal. close() releases a session locally, blocking further sends/receives while still allowing a final checkpoint.

ChannelSession checkpoint and restore src/l2ps/channel/session.ts, src/l2ps/channel/index.ts, src/tests/l2ps/channel.test.ts |
ChannelSession checkpoints its sequence floor, transcript, identity, membership, and timestamps. Restore validates snapshot fields and resumes without registering the channel ID. Closing blocks messaging while leaving checkpoint access available. Tests cover recovery, replay rejection, and closure. |
RfqSession checkpoint and restore src/l2ps/channel/negotiate.ts, src/l2ps/channel/index.ts, src/tests/l2ps/negotiate.test.ts |
RfqSession checkpoints and restores negotiation state, proposals, and outcome with new callbacks. Closing ignores inbound messages and rejects outbound actions. Tests cover restored proposals, terminal negotiations, and closure. |

[Medium impact] The changes affect restart and message-order behavior in the SDK’s L2PS channel and RFQ workflows. Do not merge yet: repeated restarts can reuse message numbers, and overlapping RFQ actions can reopen a finished negotiation.

restore() copies timestamps from the old process but creates a new default clock. That clock starts from a different point after a restart. If the saved activity time is 300,000 ms and the new clock reads 1,000 ms, liveness() throws because the current time precedes the saved activity. Restore elapsed time against the new clock, with an explicit policy for time spent offline, rather than copying process-local timestamps.

Final checkpoints miss pending sends
close() does not wait for pending sends, so a checkpoint taken afterward may not be final. Start RfqSession.accept(), close while sendFn is pending, then save both sessions. The send can still finish and settle the RFQ after those snapshots were captured. The saved RFQ remains open even though the peer received an acceptance. ChannelSession.sendOutgoing() can likewise append a signed message after close. Make shutdown wait for pending work, or refuse a final checkpoint until that work finishes.

Reject invalid RFQ snapshot state and proposal sequences.
RfqSession.restore() assigns snapshot.state without validation. An unknown state leaves the session outside RfqState; onIncoming() drops all traffic, and assertOpen() rejects outbound actions. The restored session is stranded instead of rejected during restore.
Validate the state before assignment. Also reject proposal sequences that are not positive integers. The channel layer enforces this sequence contract for live messages, but it does not validate RFQ snapshot contents.

Rebase restored CH-4 timestamps.
restore() can load timestamps from a previous process's monotonic-clock epoch. The new clock can be earlier than those timestamps. checkLiveness() then throws instead of evaluating the CH-4 deadlines.

Security pass. Nothing is persisted by the SDK itself (snapshots are plain objects the caller stores), no keys or subnet secrets are in the snapshot, and there is no deep-merge or __proto__ sink. Two items I would fix before this is relied on as restart recovery:
- A restored session does not work with
L2PSChannelTransport: the transport'sappliedSeqstarts at 0 and cannot be seeded, so after restore athighestSeen = Nan inbound seq N+1 is buffered forever (drain waits for seq 1), and any replayed frame with seq <= N now reachesreceiveIncomingand throws "non-monotonic" (channel-fatalonError) instead of being dropped as before. SeedingappliedSeqfrom the session on restore and including the #164 pending envelope in the checkpoint fixes both. checkpoint()is pull-based, so a crash betweensendOutgoing(which bumpshighestSeen) and the caller's checkpoint restores an older floor: the session signs a different message at an already-used sequence (the peer drops it as<= appliedSeqand the channel desyncs), and a rolled-back snapshot lowers the replay floor and, for RFQ, re-opens an already accepted deal. A persist hook called before the send leaves the process (write-ahead) plus a note that snapshots must be integrity-protected and saved atomically with the RFQ snapshot covers it.
Smaller: restore() only checks highestSeen and that transcript is an array; re-verifying each transcript entry, channelId, membership and highestSeen >= max seq keeps a tampered store from injecting messages that finalizeRfq would then co-sign. closed is not in the snapshot, so a closed session restores as open. The default in-memory registry loses CH-6 across restart (a markSeen on restore would keep channelId reuse blocked).
Tests: a tampered snapshot, a stale checkpoint and a transport round-trip after restore are the missing cases.
… checkpoints Address Hov's two merge blockers on restart recovery: - A restored ChannelSession could not resume receiving through a new L2PSChannelTransport: the transport started its contiguous-apply counter at 0 and an inbound seq N waited forever for the already applied seq 1. ChannelSession now exposes highestSequence and the transport seeds appliedSeq from it (or an explicit resumeFrom). - A checkpoint taken while a send was in flight was non-final, so a restore from it could re-drive the session and reuse a sequence. ChannelSession.sendOutgoing and every RfqSession send now mark the call in flight, and checkpoint() refuses until it settles.
Re-validate the whole persisted transcript on ChannelSession.restore (channelId, membership, monotonic sequence, signature, and highestSeen floor), so a tampered store cannot inject messages a restored session would co-sign on. Carry the closed flag in both ChannelSession and RfqSession snapshots so a session closed before a crash restores closed instead of re-opening a finished negotiation.

Thanks for the round. The transport seeding and the per-entry verification in ChannelSession.restore are right. Three of the four points from the first pass are still open, and the Greptile finding is real, so this is not restart recovery yet.
- session.ts:152, negotiate.ts:174 — no write-ahead persistence. pendingSends only makes checkpoint() throw during a send; the crash window is after delivery (transport.ts:177) and before the caller's checkpoint, and it still restores an older floor: the session reuses a sequence and a rolled-back RFQ snapshot re-opens an accepted deal. Add a persist hook awaited before the signed message leaves the process, carrying the message and the new floor.
- session.ts:44-70, transport.ts:139-177 — the pending signed-but-undelivered envelope (#164) is not in the snapshot, and appliedSeq is seeded from highestSeen, which includes it. After restore the peer's reply is awaited past a message it never saw. Persist the pending envelope, resend it idempotently, and seed from delivered sequences.
- session.ts:234 — the monotonic check rejects checkpoints a live session produces: sendOutgoing reserves the sequence before the signing await (:308), so a concurrent receive lands first and the transcript reads [7, 6]. Keep the transcript sorted by sequence on push, or require uniqueness plus per-entry verification instead of append order. Add a slow-signer test.
- session.ts:312 — if signing throws, the reserved sequence is never released; the gap is then seeded into appliedSeq. Release or burn it, and say which.
- negotiate.ts:211 — RfqSession.restore validates nothing: state and outcome enums, standing in proposals, sequence validity, terminal state matching the outcome. Better: bind the RFQ snapshot to the verified ChannelSession transcript.
- session.ts:166, channelIdRegistry.ts — mark the channelId as seen on restore (or document that the registry must be durable); today a restored session's id can be reused after restart.
- checkpoint() docs: snapshots must be integrity-protected by the caller and saved atomically together with the RFQ snapshot.
- Tests: a rolled-back snapshot after a send, a crash between send and persist, tampered RFQ state, and the out-of-order transcript case.
One nit: the commit message in d82abf4 names a reviewer; worth squashing out before merge.
Add an optional persist hook to ChannelSession and RfqSession that is awaited before a signed message leaves the process, closing the crash window between a send and the caller's next checkpoint: a restart can no longer reuse a sequence or re-open an already accepted deal. Session mutations are serialized so each write-ahead snapshot is consistent, a failed persist releases the reserved sequence, restore accepts an out-of-order transcript (rejecting only duplicates), and RfqSession.restore re-validates the snapshot's state, outcome and proposal list. Document that snapshots must be integrity-protected and saved atomically, and that CH-6 reuse-blocking across a restart needs a durable registry.

Overlapping sends erase crash protection
persistSettled() clears pending even when another send is still running. Start offer(), then abort() before the offer finishes. Both save pending snapshots. If the offer finishes while the abort is still being delivered, it saves an open snapshot without pending. A crash after the peer receives the abort but before the local abort settles restores that snapshot as open.

A negotiation session lived only in memory, so a restart lost it. This adds save, restore, and close to both the channel and RFQ sessions, so a session can resume right where it left off after a restart. A restored session keeps its replay protection, and a finished deal stays finished.
Tests 52/52. Closes the SDK side of node #1036.
