Creating an Overlay in Python using Tkinter

In this tutorial, we will learn how to create an overlay in Python using the Tkinter library. An overlay is a window that appears on top of other windows, and is commonly used to display information or notifications.

Here's the code to create an overlay using Tkinter:

Let's break down the code and understand each step.

  • First, we import the Tkinter library using from tkinter import *

  • Next, we create the root window using root=Tk()

  • We then set the title of the window using root.title("overlay")

  • The next two lines of code set the position of the window on the screen. x="0" and y="0" set the position of the window to the top left corner of the screen. root.geometry(f'250x150+{x}+{y}') sets the size of the window to 250x150 and its position to the values of x and y that we defined earlier.

  • root.overrideredirect(True) removes the titlebar of the window.

  • root.attributes("-transparentcolor","red") sets the transparent color of the window to red.

  • root.config(bg="red") sets the background color of the window to red.

  • We then create a label using l=Label(root,text="HI this is an overlay",fg="white",font=(60),bg="red") and use the pack() method to display it on the window.

  • We then create a button using b=Button(root,text="click me to print something",command=lambda:print("this is something")) and use the pack() method to display it on the window.

  • root.wm_attributes("-topmost", 1) makes the window always appear on top of other windows.

  • Finally, we use root.mainloop() to run the Tkinter event loop and display the window.

That's it! You now have a fully functional overlay in Python using Tkinter. You can customize the window and add more elements to it as per your requirements.
