Summary

This branch adopts the Python lint standards from Pokie PR #12 across generated packages, tests, scripts, and GitHub Actions sources. Python 3.12 becomes the minimum accepted baseline. The base Pylint sweep uses uv-managed PyPy for a 3.12 baseline and explicitly selected CPython at newer baselines.

Ruff 0.16.8, ty 0.0.56, and DF12 Python Lints v0.4.0 run separately on Python 3.14, allowing generated packages to retain a 3.12 baseline. The template adds DF12 Pylint, Ambrleaks, strict Skylos, Vulture test-helper detection, verified Nose duplication checks, and workflow/action validation. Markdown formatting uses mdtablefix 0.6.1, and spelling covers the whole repository.

CI explicitly provisions supported Go 1.27.x for Actionlint and targets the Rust extension workspace for native caching. Act failures identify the first failed step and retain complete logs. Coverage acceptance requires actual package entries, and generated-project guides explain Git initialization before the first quality run. Actions validation propagates discovery failures, and generated Act Validation provisions its own Go and Actionlint dependencies. Both coverage workflows consume the shared action that installs verified official cargo-nextest releases, removing the installer fallback that could supply bytes inconsistent with its pinned checksum. Explicit output-script arguments also prevent Act’s duplicate input spellings from failing coverage output generation.

Default Python source discovery captures one Git result and checks its status before tools consume that stored list. Explicit source lists and direct help/build targets retain their existing boundaries. Act timeouts retain partial output, and existing coverage XML is exported even when execution raises.

Review walkthrough

  • copier.yml rejects baselines below 3.12. The generated Makefile discovers tracked and new sources, selects the base interpreter, pins tooling, and serializes gates.

  • Python configuration adopts the rule families and scanner policies. Generated CI installs the matching formatter and action tooling, uses the selected baseline, and runs Markdown and repository spelling checks.

  • The composite-action adapter exposes executable steps to Actionlint. Its behavioural tests preserve inputs and diagnostics; the wheel action quotes output paths and supports disabling uploads.

  • Baseline and source-discovery tests exercise rejected older versions and new hidden action sources. Rendered lint tests check formatting and the complete lint pipeline at 3.12, 3.13, and 3.14. Interpreter-tier tests check baseline syntax and parse-error rejection.

  • The outer users’ guide provides the requested quality-gate flow diagram with a text caption explaining its paths and interpreter boundary.

  • CI toolchain contracts require compatible Go before every Go invocation and stable Rust/Cargo before mdtablefix in generated pure Python and Rust workflows. Parent CI and Act validation also bootstrap Go explicitly. Rust cache metadata targets the extension workspace. The developer guides explain these prerequisites.

  • Act result diagnostics report the first failed workflow step before checking coverage and retain complete logs. Docker-free regression tests require successful tests and valid coverage XML for the known archive-phase exception and reject earlier failures and empty coverage package containers.

  • Scanner rejection tests run the configured DF12 Pylint, Ambrleaks, Vulture, and Nose tools against planted defects. Actions pipeline tests cover failed discovery and successful validation. Generated-trace properties supplement the named Act diagnostic regressions.

  • Migration guidance explains updating older Copier baselines. The developer guide documents the complete toolchain, and ADR-001 appends the revised quality contract while preserving its original decision.

  • Coverage-main and generated CI consume the published shared coverage installer repair without changing other shared-action pins. The checksum regression rejects an early installer failure even when later logs contain successful test/coverage evidence and matching archive errors. Further regressions reject output-generation and artefact-protocol failures and retain complete logs and XML even when Act fails.

  • Both coverage callers use the shared action’s publish-artefact input to disable unsupported artefact transport only under Act. Language tests, coverage generation, output checks, the ratchet, and XML validation remain active. Parent Act Validation separately uploads both retained combined Act logs even after failure, collects both reports at stable paths and uploads them through the real GitHub artefact service. Hosted artefact download and XML validation provide transport evidence separately.

  • Source-discovery regressions exercise real Git outside a repository, unavailable Git, listing failures before tools, and explicit source overrides. Wheel and downstream workflow tests check parsed upload wiring, actual generated Bash arguments, and Python 3.13/3.14 propagation for both variants.

The checked discovery contract rejects hidden global reads, unchecked captures, and duplicate Git reads. A generated-workflow mutation helper rejects unknown mutation names; upload contracts reject an empty action ref. The developer guide documents the isolated TY_VERSION pin and composite-action projection boundary, while the users’ guide includes the separate Markdown/spelling and dependency-audit commands. ADR-006 records the expanded repository-wide spelling scope in an addendum.

Validation

The final follow-up records the composite-action validation boundary in ADR-001 and adds a separate always-run diagnostic-log upload, preserving strict coverage evidence. Hosted CI and Act Validation both passed for published follow-up 5a96a71fce3ab9e623af997e1e973bdc4dafe881.

  • Local normal-suite attempt, make test WITH_ACT=0: 156 passed, 2 Act skips, then the Rust-enabled build was blocked by build-limits: the supervisor refused: unhealthy. This is an infrastructure refusal; the local full suite did not pass.

  • Both real generated Act variants passed with the CI-pinned Act 0.2.84 and lightweight image, without an xfail. Their complete logs contain no failed-step events, and both coverage jobs succeeded. Pure Python produced 3 package entries at 98.42% line coverage; Rust produced 4 at 96.92%.

  • The combined Act-enabled invocation passed both integrations, then stopped because a local PYTEST_ADDOPTS setting propagated its outer --basetemp into nested pytest. The corrected normal-suite invocation uses the persistent temporary-directory environment without an inherited base-directory override. Source and Act inputs remained unchanged.

  • All 38 focused discovery, wheel-workflow, and lint-baseline tests passed. make check-fmt, make lint (including 100% docstring coverage), make typecheck, and make spelling passed.

  • Rendered Markdown preflight passed for both variants at Python 3.12, 3.13, and 3.14, plus the three modified outer documents. Root Markdownlint checked 24 files with no errors; Mermaid validation and git diff --check passed.

  • The unchanged shared official cargo-nextest installer previously passed independent cold-install and warm-cache verification in the same lightweight image. Checksum, output-generation, and protocol failures remain hard failures in the regressions.

  • Hosted CI passed for published repair 98f0d49b59b4809e33e79df69943bed33663eb52: 190 tests passed, 2 opt-in Act skips, 3 snapshots. It exercised the native and remaining normal-suite cases blocked by local compiler admission. Act Validation also passed: 192 tests, 3 snapshots. Both reports were downloaded from the coverage artefact and validated: pure Python contains 3 packages at 98.42% line coverage; Rust contains 4 at 96.92%.

  • Current hosted CI passed on the synthetic merge of 5a96a71fce3ab9e623af997e1e973bdc4dafe881 into main dcf24fd419c179572975f6b3473e3da0e8833b35: 190 passed, 2 Act skips. The final local follow-ups passed 14 source-discovery tests and 13 parent-CI tests plus formatting, linting, typechecking, spelling, Markdown, and diagram checks. Current Act Validation passed 192 tests and 3 snapshots on the same synthetic merge. Both coverage reports were downloaded and validated: pure Python has 3 packages at 98.42% line coverage; Rust has 4 at 96.92%. Both diagnostic logs were downloaded and parsed, with 1,023 and 2,058 JSON events respectively and zero failed-step events. These uploads retain caught timeout and early-failure output when available; runner loss or forced job termination cannot guarantee an upload.

Notes

Rust-enabled projects declare the exact PyO3 module initializer as a Skylos runtime entrypoint. The native-boundary regression verifies that unused sibling functions still block the gate.

Snapshot attributes permit Syrupy’s canonical indented blank lines in generated snapshots.

Act-backed integration tests remain opt-in through WITH_ACT=1. The retained legacy archive-phase exception requires successful language tests, coverage evidence, and valid coverage XML with package entries. Setup, installation, lint, test, and output-only failures report the first failed step and complete logs, including when archive upload later succeeds.

References

Adopt the Python lint standards from leynos/pokie#12 across generated
packages, tests, scripts, and GitHub Actions sources. Reject Python
baselines below 3.12 and run base Pylint with PyPy at 3.12 or explicitly
selected CPython at newer baselines.

Keep modern lint tools in isolated Python 3.14 environments. Add strict
dead-code, duplication, workflow, Markdown formatting, and spelling
gates, with rendered-project coverage for the supported baseline tiers
and the PyO3 runtime entrypoint boundary.

Summary

  • Require Python 3.12 or later for generated projects. Add migration guidance and document the quality gates in the developer guide, user guide, ADR-001 and migration guide.
  • Expand generated linting to cover Python style and types, dead code, duplication, GitHub Actions, Markdown tables and repository-wide spelling. Pin tools and select the Pylint interpreter from the configured Python baseline.
  • Update generated workflows to use the configured Python version. Add Go and Rust toolchain setup, Rust cache checks and Act-specific controls for coverage artefact publication.
  • Add a composite-action workflow adapter. Improve Act diagnostics and accept the shared coverage archive failure only when required tests pass and valid coverage XML is present.
  • Add contract and regression tests for lint gates, workflow contracts, Act diagnostics, source discovery and the action adapter.

Validation

Supplied comments report successful hosted CI and Act Validation for one candidate. They report successful hosted CI, with Act Validation still in progress, for another. They also report validation of downloaded coverage XML. The supplied evidence does not establish a test count, a full local test-suite result or formal review approval.

Walkthrough

The pull request sets Python 3.12 as the minimum generated-project baseline and expands its quality gates. It updates CI toolchains and coverage publication, adds composite-action workflow validation, strengthens Act diagnostics, and adds coverage-evidence checks.

Generated project quality gates and workflow validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Python baseline and generated quality gates
copier.yml, template/Makefile.jinja, template/pyproject.toml.jinja, template/.rules/*, template/.gitignore, template/.markdownlint-cli2.jsonc, template/.yamllint.yml, template/typos.local.toml, template/{{ package_name }}/*, tests/test_lint_standards.py, tests/test_source_discovery_failures.py, tests/helpers/makefile_contracts.py
Python 3.12 becomes the minimum baseline. The generated Makefile adds or updates source discovery, lint, formatting, typing, spelling, dead-code, duplication, and Actions checks.
Composite-action workflow validation
template/scripts/action_workflow.py.jinja, template/tests/test_action_workflow.py, template/Makefile.jinja, tests/test_lint_actions_contract.py
A CLI validates action manifests and projects composite actions into workflow YAML. The generated lint-actions target validates local actions and projected workflows.
Workflow toolchains and coverage publication
.github/workflows/*, template/.github/workflows/*, template/.github/actions/pure-python-wheel/action.yml, tests/helpers/ci_contracts.py, tests/test_actionlint_toolchain.py, tests/test_parent_ci.py, tests/test_workflow_boundaries.py
Workflows provision Go and validation tools, use the configured Python baseline, and configure Rust conditionally. Act runs disable coverage-artifact publication; the parent Act workflow uploads coverage reports. The pure-Python wheel action adds an optional upload input and quotes the output directory passed to the build.
Act diagnostics and evidence checks
tests/test_github_actions_integration.py, tests/test_act_diagnostics.py, docs/developers-guide.md
Act output is combined and saved to act.log. Result checks require structured test and coverage evidence and valid coverage.xml. The archive-failure exception requires the specified failure events and successful prior checks.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 114 functions across 19 files. (5 skipped: 5 unsupported.)

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

The pull request adds substantive tests for the changed behaviour. tests/test_lint_standards.py exercises Python 3.12 rejection boundaries, hidden and untracked source discovery, and Rust dead-code handling. tests/test_source_discovery_failures.py runs generated Make targets against failed and missing Git commands, explicit source overrides, and single-result reuse. template/tests/test_action_workflow.py tests workflow projection, error diagnostics, non-composite actions, standalone execution, and Actionlint behaviour. tests/test_lint_gate_failures.py plants real Ruff, DF12 Pylint, Ambrleaks, Vulture, and duplication violations. tests/test_act_diagnostics.py covers failed-step reporting, language and coverage evidence, valid Cobertura package data, archive classification, property-based trace variations, stream ordering, timeouts, and evidence retention. CI, workflow, wheel-action, Go, Rust-cache, coverage-publication, Pylint-tier, and generated-project contracts are also exercised through rendered configurations and negative mutations. The tests check observable behaviour and plausible incorrect implementations, not only mock calls or snapshots.

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

The user-facing quality-gate changes are documented in docs/users-guide.md. It explains make markdownlint for Markdown linting and repository-wide spelling (lines 12–13), separate make spelling, and make audit with pip-audit plus conditional cargo audit (lines 14–15). It also links the Python 3.12 migration guide and describes the generated quality gates and tools. No documentation failure condition remains. Prior failure addressed: docs/users-guide.md lines 12–19 now document make markdownlint, standalone make spelling, make audit with conditional cargo audit, and the Python 3.12 migration link.

Full details: Module-Level Documentation

Explanation

All changed Python modules carry module-level docstrings. The new action adapter documents its purpose, utility, and relationship to action-validator and make lint-actions at template/scripts/action_workflow.py.jinja:10-14. The generated pure.py module documents its package-entrypoint relationship at template/{{ package_name }}/pure.py.jinja:1-12. The changed test and helper modules also contain purpose-specific module docstrings. No changed module lacks the required documentation.

Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)

Explanation

Pass this check. The PR adds meaningful behavioural coverage at the relevant boundaries. tests/test_interrogate_lint.py:26-103 renders projects for Python 3.12–3.14, runs make check-fmt lint, and verifies a planted lint defect fails. tests/test_source_discovery_failures.py:143-378 exercises generated Make targets with Git failures, missing Git, explicit source overrides, empty source lists, and single-result reuse. template/tests/test_action_workflow.py:40-155 tests CLI output, malformed action input, error diagnostics, and non-composite actions; :160-233 also checks standalone execution and real Actionlint behaviour. tests/test_github_actions_integration.py:565-640 provides generated-workflow Act coverage for pure-Python and Rust variants, while tests/test_act_diagnostics.py:161-830 covers failure selection, coverage evidence, archive classification, ordered logs, timeouts, and retained artefacts. tests/test_workflow_boundaries.py:199-254 executes the wheel build command and verifies safe handling of spaced paths. These tests exercise public commands and workflow boundaries, not only private helpers.

Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)

Explanation

Accept the property-testing check. The change adds substantive Hypothesis coverage in tests/test_act_diagnostics.py: generated Act traces vary root and nested IDs, event order, noise, key spelling, and parent propagation; a second property mutates illegal failure conditions and requires rejection. tests/test_mutation_testing_template.py also retains a Hypothesis range test for Python 3.12–3.20. The other new contracts use small parameterized tables for finite validation cases. No introduced lemma or proof assumption requires an exhaustive proof.

Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)

Explanation

No Rust or TypeScript compile-time behaviour changed, so no trybuild-style test applies. Stable generated output has focused Syrupy coverage in tests/test_template.py, with matching snapshots in tests/__snapshots__/test_template.ambr for the generated module and make help. The new structured workflow adapter uses parsed-YAML assertions for inputs, steps, exit status and Actionlint behaviour in template/tests/test_action_workflow.py; this avoids brittle whole-output snapshots. Act diagnostics use semantic checks for failure identity and retained logs, which is appropriate for output containing paths, IDs and variable log content. No explicit snapshot or compile-time testing failure is introduced.

Full details: Unit Architecture

Explanation

The prior hidden-fallibility failure is addressed. template/Makefile.jinja:25-26 no longer discovers sources through a global $(shell ...) assignment. check-python-sources at lines 144-154 performs the single Git listing, checks $(.SHELLSTATUS), and stores the validated result. all, fmt, check-fmt, lint-python, and typecheck require this guard before build (lines 75, 156, 165, 178, and 193). The contract rejects hidden or duplicate Git reads and requires this ordering (tests/helpers/makefile_contracts.py:216-239). Behavioural tests cover Git failure, missing Git, uninitialised repositories, explicit overrides, and reuse of one successful result (tests/test_source_discovery_failures.py:143-378). The changed command and test boundaries make the fallibility and side-effects visible. Prior failure addressed: The Makefile now captures and checks one Git result in check-python-sources; guarded consumers reuse PYTHON_TARGETS. The contract rejects hidden or duplicate git ls-files, and regression tests cover failures, overrides, and single-result reuse.

Full details: Domain Architecture

Explanation

Pass. The pull request adds no domain model or domain service. The generated package change only removes a future import and expands a docstring in template/{{ package_name }}/pure.py.jinja:16-23; the baseline rule is configuration in copier.yml:22-28. The new template/scripts/action_workflow.py.jinja:27-137 is an explicit adapter from action YAML to workflow YAML, and :140-166 contains only CLI and filesystem handling. template/Makefile.jinja:144-174 and :242-255 contain infrastructure and tool orchestration. The adapter preserves the external action data, delegates metadata validation to action-validator, and has boundary tests in template/tests/test_action_workflow.py:14-37 and :139-157. No changed core code leaks HTTP, SQL, ORM, queue, environment, filesystem, or vendor concerns into domain logic. No command claims a domain invariant that it does not enforce.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

The developer guide now documents the action adapter, including its invocation, projection boundary, supported action types, and error contract at docs/developers-guide.md:127-137. The standing failure is not fully resolved because the new action-validator/Actionlint projection boundary is still absent from the relevant quality-gates ADR. docs/adr-001-template-quality-gates.md:52-70 records the expanded lint and toolchain decisions but does not record this adapter design.

Resolution

Add an addendum to docs/adr-001-template-quality-gates.md (or a more appropriate ADR) that records the scripts/action_workflow.py boundary: action-validator checks action metadata, composite actions are projected to a temporary workflow_dispatch workflow for Actionlint, non-composite actions are skipped by the adapter, and file/YAML/action-shape errors return status 1 on standard error. Keep the existing developer-guide section as the operational documentation.

Full details: Observability

Explanation

Upload the retained Act logs as hosted evidence. run_act writes combined output to artifact_dir/act.log and preserves partial output on subprocess.TimeoutExpired (tests/test_github_actions_integration.py:133-153). The caller re-raises that timeout, so it does not include the partial log in the assertion diagnostic (tests/test_github_actions_integration.py:620-628). The parent workflow uploads only coverage.xml paths and fails when no report exists (.github/workflows/act-validation.yml:89-103). A timeout or early failure can therefore leave the diagnostic log on the runner with no downloadable evidence.

Resolution

Add a separate always() artifact upload for pure-artefacts/act.log and rust-artefacts/act.log. Allow that log upload to tolerate missing files, while keeping the existing strict coverage-report upload. Preserve the full combined log for normal failures and partial output for timeouts.

Reviewer's Guide

The PR raises generated projects to a Python 3.12 minimum and replaces the prior narrow lint flow with pinned, isolated Python 3.14 tooling, expanded dead-code and duplication checks, repository-wide source discovery, and comprehensive workflow/action, Markdown, formatting, and spelling validation. It also adds an Actionlint adapter and regression coverage across Python baseline tiers, rendered projects, action behavior, and Rust native entrypoints.

Seek a systemic fix rather than tactical. Ask yourself, can this happen again or happen elsewhere? If so, think about a long term fix of the underlying issue.

@coderabbitai

This comment was marked as resolved.

Set up compatible Go before Actionlint in parent and generated workflows.
Provision stable Rust/Cargo for mdtablefix in both template variants,
and point the native Rust cache at the extension workspace.

Report the first failed Act step before checking coverage. Retain complete
logs and require successful language tests and valid coverage XML before
accepting the known composite archive failure.

Add Docker-free workflow and diagnostic regressions, document the toolchain
contract, and normalize optional documentation whitespace.

@coderabbitai The systemic repair for the Act investigation is published in dcfc838 (comparison base 3bc98c0).

All three workflows now provision SHA-pinned setup-go v6 with Go 1.25.x and cache disabled before Go use; Actionlint 1.7.12 and GOPATH/bin are retained. The generated Rust cache targets rust_extension -> target and preserves the tool directories. Pure Python retains no native Rust cache configuration. Stable Rust/Cargo is provisioned for the Cargo-backed Markdown formatter in both variants.

Act results now identify the first structured failed step before checking coverage and retain the complete ordered output. The known output/archive exception requires successful language tests and coverage evidence before failure, plus valid coverage XML. Docker-free contracts include missing/misordered Go setup and synthetic early-failure and archive-exception cases.

Validation: focused tests 41 passed; normal make test 130 passed, 2 opt-in Act skips, 3 snapshots passed; formatting, lint, typecheck, spelling, Markdownlint, Nixie and whitespace checks passed. Both actual lightweight-image workflows ran via make test WITH_ACT=1 with Act 0.2.84. Both reached the guarded expected failure after successful tests/coverage: pure Python 20 tests and 97.98% line coverage; Rust 1 Rust test plus 20 Python tests and 96.47% merged coverage. Both coverage XML files are valid, and no Rust-cache root-manifest metadata error occurs.

The remaining Act limitation is separate: shared set_outputs.py rejects duplicated INPUT_ARTEFACT_NAME_SUFFIX, then archive validation receives an empty artifact name. Neither variant establishes full integration success. Complete local logs, workflows, and coverage artifacts are retained. New hosted checks are pending.

Please confirm whether the original missing-Go, incorrect cache-workspace, and masked-failure concerns are resolved by this candidate, or identify the specific remaining defect. This is a focused disposition of that investigation, not a request to start a formal PR review.

@buzzybee-df12 Treat all three original concerns as resolved in dcfc83840292b140f833a1d70a9415f412fcb1f2. Direct inspection of the candidate supports that disposition.

Original concern Verified repair
Missing Go All three affected workflows provision SHA-pinned actions/setup-go with Go 1.25.x and cache: false before Go use. Actionlint v1.7.12 and the GOPATH/bin export remain intact.
Incorrect Rust cache workspace The generated workflow sets workspaces: rust_extension -> target and retains the tool-cache directories. The native Rust cache remains inside the Rust-only template branch. Stable Rust setup sits outside that branch for the formatter.
Masked workflow failure assert_act_result handles unexpected non-zero results before coverage assertions. Diagnostics identify the first structured failed step and retain complete logs. run_act merges stderr into stdout during capture rather than concatenating separate streams afterwards.

The archive exception also retains the required safeguards. It requires successful language-step results and coverage evidence before the first structured failure, plus a readable Cobertura report. It rejects independent failed steps. The inspected regression tests cover missing or misordered Go setup, early failures, invalid coverage XML, misleading command echoes, and cross-stream ordering.

Keep the shared-action output/archive limitation separate. The reported duplicate INPUT_ARTEFACT_NAME_SUFFIX and empty artifact name do not reopen these three concerns. Neither guarded expected failure establishes full Act integration success.

Validation boundary: I inspected the candidate source and regression assertions. I did not run tests or Docker, or independently inspect the retained local artefacts. The comparison base was unavailable in the clone, so this disposition rests on direct candidate inspection rather than a base-to-candidate diff. No specific remaining defect was identified in the three repairs.

Keep hosted-check confirmation separate from this focused disposition. No formal PR review was started.

@coderabbitai This is a new local Docker/Act integration failure while validating the next repair for PR #96. The published head is 9b329344c176136f3128094d2df2e0d562641280, base 3bc98c0848cae0e4875d56908ab603a9cd1d24fb. The generated Rust CI workflow and shared coverage action pin are unchanged from that published head. The linked hosted Act run below is the earlier passing comparison, not the local failure. The local Act 0.2.84 run executed both real generated workflows in catthehacker/ubuntu:act-latest.

Please investigate the cause of the following issue using codegraph exploration and research, identify a fix and provide an AI coding agent prompt for the fix:

Seek a systemic fix rather than tactical. Ask yourself, can this happen again or happen elsewhere? If so, think about a long term fix of the underlying issue.

Investigation and a bounded agent prompt only; do not create commits or new PRs. Please distinguish a genuine release/checksum mismatch, cargo-binstall fallback behaviour, cached installer state, and any local test-harness substitution using actual source evidence. Do not propose bypassing checksum verification, weakening coverage checks, or accepting this as the archive xfail. If the repair belongs in shared-actions, identify that ownership boundary and any already-published immutable fix that this template could consume.

The same candidate passed 68 focused tests, formatting, linting, typechecking, and the normal suite (141 passed, 2 Act tests skipped, 3 snapshots). Local Act reported one valid pure-Python archive xfail and this distinct Rust failure. Complete logs and generated artifacts are retained locally. This is separate from the original missing-Go failure, which both variants have cleared.

@wafflecat-df12 Repair the installer provenance contract in shared-actions, then update the template’s coverage-action pins. Keep this Rust failure separate from the original missing-Go failure and the pure-Python archive xfail.

The source confirms a systemic installer defect. It does not establish which installation route produced your local b4ba0db2… executable.

Findings

1. Keep the expected checksum unchanged

I independently downloaded the official GNU x86-64 release archive for cargo-nextest 0.9.120. I hashed the archive and its executable without executing either.

Object SHA-256
Official release archive a5b1c12500c47e27af4baf533c917bf1b38e9bf2e6ffb063dfa1de6e75aa8726
Executable inside that archive 8d717594668f0ec817405b9526cb657ca40fc888068277004860d0f253837d14

The executable matches the shared action’s expected checksum exactly. The archive also matches GitHub’s release-asset digest.

Do not replace the expected checksum with b4ba0db2…. The inspected official release does not support that change.

2. Fix the mismatch between installation policy and verification policy

The source path is:

test_generated_workflow_runs_with_shared_coverage_action
  → run_act
  → generated ci.yml
  → generate-coverage@18bed1ca…
  → Install cargo-nextest
  → install_cargo_nextest.py::main
  → install_cargo_nextest(target)
  → cargo binstall
  → _find_nextest_binary
  → verify_nextest_binary
→ exit 1 before Rust tests and coverage

In the pinned installer:

  • Line 190 starts the cargo-binstall installation function.
  • Lines 199–210 select the version and target, but do not restrict installation strategies.
  • Line 212 prints “installed successfully” after cargo-binstall returns successfully.
  • Lines 249–252 locate and verify the executable separately.

Thus, “installed successfully” does not mean “installed and verified.”

The installer expects bytes from one official release. However, cargo-binstall can obtain a third-party QuickInstall executable or compile from source. The v1.19.1 strategy documentation confirms these alternatives.

--targets selects the target triple. It does not restrict provenance. --locked does not make a source build byte-identical to the official executable.

3. Keep these explanations distinct

Explanation Evidence and disposition
Incorrect official-release checksum Not supported. The official executable matches the expected digest.
QuickInstall substitution Possible, but not identified as this local executable. I downloaded the current GNU QuickInstall asset. Its executable hashes to 3c430e62d7335e2e9e6b17db3483ddb3500076e034a748b419b20c450598e6ee, not your reported digest.
Source-build fallback Permitted by the pinned installation command. The supplied excerpt does not prove that this route ran.
Cached installer or executable Possible input state, not a demonstrated cause. The action caches cargo-binstall and cargo-nextest. It checks cargo-binstall’s version and verifies an existing cargo-nextest before reuse. A mismatching existing executable triggers installation rather than trusted reuse.
PATH or installation-root mismatch A source-visible risk. The old resolver prefers PATH, then falls back to ~/.cargo/bin. It does not consistently resolve a custom CARGO_HOME. Successful installation alone does not prove that verification selects the newly installed file.
Local test-harness substitution No substitution appears in the inspected published integration path. run_act launches the real generated workflow without an explicit local-action replacement. Its subprocess mock belongs to a separate unit test. This does not exclude an unpublished local edit, executable wrapper, or ambient Act configuration.

Preserve the local installation output and executable before changing cache state. Use that evidence to identify the origin of b4ba0db2…. A digest alone cannot identify the producer.

4. Treat the hosted run as comparison evidence only

The linked run succeeded at template head 9b329344c176136f3128094d2df2e0d562641280. Its job log reports 132 passed and 2 xfailed.

That result does not reproduce or explain the local checksum failure. It also does not establish full Act integration success.

Consume the published systemic fix

Use the immutable upstream repair:

7d46a399558914f5a05074e55a560fec0269fd0d — “Install CI tools from official releases”

I verified that this revision is 30 commits ahead of the current coverage-action pin. Its cargo-nextest installer:

  • Downloads the selected official release directly.
  • Verifies separate pinned archive and executable digests.
  • Removes QuickInstall and source-build fallback.
  • Verifies cached executables before reuse.
  • Honours CARGO_HOME.
  • Replaces the destination only after verification.
  • Exports the verified binary directory and checks PATH resolution.
  • Reports download, digest, installation, and reuse outcomes.

Keep installer ownership in shared-actions. Do not duplicate the installer in this template.

Update the generate-coverage references in both:

  • template/.github/workflows/ci.yml.jinja
  • template/.github/workflows/coverage-main.yml.jinja

Review the intervening action changes before adoption. Do not treat this checksum repair as proof that the separate composite-output/archive problem is fixed.

- cargo-nextest 0.9.120 installation returns successfully, but executable
  verification fails:

- The hosted run 38790791722 is an earlier passing comparison.
- The missing-Go repair remains separate.

1. Preserve and identify local provenance.
Inspect the retained complete log and generated workflow.
Preserve the mismatching executable and hash it without executing it.
Record the resolved action-cache revision, installation command,
cargo-binstall version, download URLs, strategy messages, PATH,
CARGO_HOME, and resolved executable paths before and after installation.
Inspect applicable Act configuration and executable wrappers.
Compare the local harness with the published harness.
Distinguish QuickInstall, source compilation, stale state, PATH
   shadowing, and local substitution.
If evidence cannot identify the producer, report that limit explicitly.

2. Adopt the upstream installer repair.
   Review shared-actions commit:
   7d46a399558914f5a05074e55a560fec0269fd0d
Review its intervening changes and migration documentation.
This revision installs cargo-nextest 0.9.120 directly from official
release assets and verifies archive and executable digests.
Update only the generate-coverage pins in:
   - template/.github/workflows/ci.yml.jinja
   - template/.github/workflows/coverage-main.yml.jinja
Use that full immutable SHA unless a separately reviewed descendant
is required. Do not update unrelated shared-action pins.

3. Preserve the validation boundary.
Retain nextest, language-test checks, coverage evidence, and valid XML.
Keep checksum failures as hard failures, including when followed by
   archive errors.
Add a Docker-free diagnostic regression for that sequence.
   Retain action-path and full-SHA-shape contracts under ADR-005.
Keep installer implementation tests in shared-actions.
Do not replace the expected digest with the observed local digest.
Do not introduce local-action replacements into the acceptance run.

4. Validate.
Run focused tests and normal formatting, linting, typechecking, and tests.
Run both real generated workflows under Act 0.2.84 with the existing
   lightweight image.
Exercise cold installation and warm-cache reuse.
Retain installer verification evidence, language-test outcomes,
   coverage XML, and complete logs.
Report the separate output/archive limitation independently.
Do not claim full integration success while either workflow is blocked.

Deliver the provenance finding, bounded diff, validation results,
and remaining blockers. Do not commit or open a PR.

Validation boundary: I inspected source, upstream history, release bytes, and the hosted comparison log. I did not execute repository code, run Docker, or inspect your retained local artefacts. The exact producer of b4ba0db2… remains unconfirmed.

@coderabbitai Follow-up to the installer investigation. The next local candidate consumes the verified published coverage revision ec1432aa6fa5379b2dd8f4b3402fd5b250a597bd, retaining the verified installer and fixing the Cyclopts input collision. No classifier exception was broadened.

Act37 pure-Python now completes tests, writes valid package-bearing coverage XML (98.42%), and succeeds at output generation, but then fails at actual archive upload:

First failed step: Main / Test and Measure Coverage / ['14','19']
Failure - Main Archive coverage
Error decode request body: proto: (line 1:171): unknown field "mime_type"
Failed to CreateArtifact: Failed to make request after 5 attempts: Unexpected end of JSON input

The live owned process was verified through /proc: exact cached official Act 0.2.84, executable SHA256 cf9288948c6eda3f6557e48fa9b915bcdc2b348585b52e3c1b299c07880cbd82, matching the assigned CI tool version. The newer shared action uses upload-artifact 7.0.1, whose request adds mime_type; the older server schema rejects unknown fields. The Rust case is still running unchanged so both outcomes will be retained.

Act issue 6022 and issue 6114 document this protocol incompatibility. The inspected fixes remain open, so bumping to 0.2.89 is not a verified remedy.

Please assess this bounded dependency contract and identify any remaining defect or provide a bounded AI coding agent prompt: use the shared action’s existing publish-artefact input in both generated coverage callers, enabled on GitHub and disabled only for Act’s documented ACT=true environment (${{ env.ACT != 'true' }}). The real generated workflow would still execute every lint, type, Python/Rust test, coverage and output step; coverage evidence and valid XML remain mandatory. Artifact transport would be verified by hosted CI rather than Act’s incompatible emulated server. Contract tests would reject always-disabled publication and the inverse condition, and a synthetic protocol-failure case would remain an ordinary failure rather than expanding the legacy xfail.

This is a focused compatibility assessment, not a fresh whole-PR inspection request. Do not create commits or PRs. Please distinguish local artifact-publication scope from coverage/test gates; do not recommend checksum bypass, fake actions, a heavier image, or expanding the archive xfail to swallow this new error.

@buzzybee-df12 Use the proposed publish-artefact contract. Keep the exception limited to artifact transport, not workflow failures. No defect was identified in that boundary from the inspected source.

Source-backed assessment

At ec1432aa6fa5379b2dd8f4b3402fd5b250a597bd:

  • publish-artefact defaults to "true".
  • Only Archive coverage uses that input.
  • Its condition is always() && inputs.publish-artefact == 'true'.
  • Output generation has a separate condition.
  • Tests, coverage generation, merging, and ratcheting do not depend on publication.

Act 0.2.84 explicitly sets rc.Env["ACT"] = "true" in run_context.go. Thus, use this rendered caller input:

publish-artefact: ${{ env.ACT != 'true' }}

In both Jinja templates, write:

          publish-artefact: ${{ "{{" }} env.ACT != 'true' {{ "}}" }}

Leave ACT unset on GitHub. Do not introduce a workflow or job assignment that disables hosted publication.

The reported error matches Act #6022. Act #6114 also reports incompatibility on 0.2.89. Do not treat that version bump as a verified repair.

Preserve these acceptance boundaries

  1. Require successful local execution. After disabling publication under Act, require exit code zero, successful Python/Rust steps, coverage evidence, and package-bearing Cobertura XML. Retain output-generation evidence.
  2. Keep protocol failures as failures. The inspected classifier requires both legacy input-collision and empty-name messages. A standalone mime_type failure does not qualify. Add the proposed negative regression without broadening the classifier.
  3. Verify hosted transport explicitly. Check that GitHub actually creates the coverage artifact and that its downloaded report contains valid coverage XML. A green job alone is insufficient: the shared upload step does not override upload-artifact’s default missing-file warning.
  4. Describe local scope accurately. Report “generated workflow validation with artifact publication disabled under Act”. Do not report local artifact-transport validation.
  5. Keep ownership separate. Put the caller policy in this template. Leave protocol repair with Act and installer/output implementation with shared-actions.

Bounded AI coding agent prompt

Prepare a bounded compatibility repair for agent-template-python PR #96.
Do not create commits or PRs.

1. Inspect the local candidate before editing.
Preserve both unchanged Act outcomes and their complete logs.
   Confirm both generate-coverage callers consume:
   ec1432aa6fa5379b2dd8f4b3402fd5b250a597bd
Do not update unrelated action pins.

2. In these templates, add the existing publish-artefact input:
   - template/.github/workflows/ci.yml.jinja
   - template/.github/workflows/coverage-main.yml.jinja

   Required rendered value:
   publish-artefact: ${{ env.ACT != 'true' }}

Escape the GitHub expression correctly for Jinja.
Gate only publication. Preserve caller triggers, language selection,
tests, coverage, ratchet checks, output generation, and CodeScene wiring.
Do not assign ACT=true in hosted workflow configuration.

3. Extend tests/helpers/ci_contracts.py and tests/test_helpers.py.
Require the publication expression in both callers.
Exercise rendered pure-Python and Rust variants.
Reject missing publication policy, constant false, and inverse equality.
Preserve action-path/full-SHA-shape contracts rather than fixing tests
   to one dependency SHA.

4. Add a synthetic case in tests/test_act_diagnostics.py.
Supply successful language tests, coverage evidence, valid XML, successful
output generation, then a structured Archive coverage failure containing
unknown field "mime_type" and Failed to CreateArtifact.
   Require AssertionError, not xfail.
Preserve the legacy classifier without adding protocol-error exceptions.

5. Update the relevant Act documentation.
Distinguish local coverage/test validation from hosted artifact transport.
Keep local coverage.xml and logs available independently of upload.

6. Run focused tests, normal tests, formatting, linting, and typechecking.
Run both real generated variants under the assigned Act version and image.
Require zero exit status, required language successes, valid package-bearing
coverage XML, successful output generation, and skipped Archive coverage.
On GitHub, verify actual artifact creation and downloaded coverage contents.
Report unavailable hosted evidence as pending.

Do not bypass checksums, replace actions, change images, weaken coverage
checks, or expand the archive xfail. Deliver the bounded diff, evidence,
and remaining blockers.

Validation limit: I inspected the published checkout and pinned shared-action source. The checkout still uses the older coverage pin. I did not inspect your unpublished candidate, execute tests or Docker, or verify hosted artifact transport. Keep the Rust outcome pending until its retained run completes.

Thanks for the scope guidance.

Learning: For agent-template-python PR #96, keep Act artifact-publication compatibility separate from test and coverage validation. The intended caller policy uses generate-coverage's publish-artefact input with `${{ env.ACT != 'true' }}` in both generated coverage workflows. Preserve real actions, checksum verification, language-test success, coverage evidence, and valid package-bearing Cobertura XML. Treat the mime_type/CreateArtifact protocol failure as an ordinary failure, not an extension of the legacy archive xfail. Verify artifact transport separately on GitHub.

@coderabbitai Follow-up to the checksum investigation: published repair 644eb111bd58ec4afffe902c7ec5fc1454b382c7 updates only the CI and coverage-main generate-coverage references to the verified upstream revision ec1432aa6fa5379b2dd8f4b3402fd5b250a597bd. Other shared-action pins are preserved.

The installer implementation remains owned by shared-actions. It installs the official cargo-nextest 0.9.145 release and independently verifies archive and executable hashes, with no QuickInstall or source-build fallback. The original 0.9.120 expected digest was correct; the mismatched local digest was never accepted. The adopted release’s archive digest 32aa82416099eb12fffae9cf1a279ad201fecbd3f74826c613e32e9006b29867 and binary digest c4d4f4ad7eb50677b568aae324251e8bd6978e9fc6fe97aa1347a2afdd95e59c were independently verified against official release bytes without executing them. The template's action-path/full-SHA-shape contracts remain unchanged under ADR-005.

The new Docker-free checksum regression supplies an earlier nested installer failure followed by otherwise-valid language-test, coverage, XML, and archive-error evidence. It requires an ordinary assertion failure identifying the installer and nearby checksum error, so the archive exception cannot mask it. The developer guide records this ordering and provenance contract. The later revision also removes the Cyclopts environment-binding collision seen in both Act36 output steps by passing coverage path and artefact suffix as explicit arguments. A second negative regression ensures an output failure is still rejected even when archive upload succeeds; the classifier was not broadened.

Validation: The full normal suite passed (151 tests, 2 opt-in Act skips, 3 snapshots). Both real generated Act variants passed under official Act 0.2.84 and the lightweight image (2 passed; no xfail). Final spelling-only changes then passed 60 affected focused tests plus formatting, lint, typechecking, spelling, Markdownlint, Mermaid validation, and diff checks; all workflow and runtime hashes were unchanged. Hosted CI for this repair is being observed separately. Independent cold/warm verification in one lightweight container installed then reused the official 0.9.145 executable, matching the binary digest above in both phases. No source compilation or host Cargo-cache substitution was used..

Local provenance limit: the previous container and mismatching executable were not retained. The old wrapper captured successful cargo-binstall output, so its precise selected source remains unknown. Independent official-release verification established that the pinned expected digest was correct. The repair removes the installer/verification policy mismatch without claiming which fallback produced those local bytes.

Please confirm whether this specific provenance defect is resolved for the published repair, or identify the remaining defect and provide a bounded AI coding agent prompt. This is a focused disposition, separate from the original missing-Go repair and any output/archive limitation.

@pandalump Treat the specific installer-provenance defect as resolved in 644eb111bd58ec4afffe902c7ec5fc1454b382c7. Direct source inspection supports this disposition. No remaining defect was identified within this scope.

The published repair establishes these controls:

Control Verified source evidence
Immutable dependency Both generated coverage callers use generate-coverage@ec1432aa6fa5379b2dd8f4b3402fd5b250a597bd.
Consistent provenance The upstream installer downloads official cargo-nextest 0.9.145 release assets. It does not invoke Cargo, QuickInstall, or source compilation.
Independent integrity checks The installer verifies the archive before extraction. It verifies the executable before replacing the destination. The GNU x86-64 digest constants match those supplied in your comment.
Cache and PATH handling The installer verifies an existing executable before reuse, honours CARGO_HOME, and exports the verified directory. After installation, it checks the executable resolved through PATH.
Failure classification The checksum regression puts the nested installer failure before otherwise-valid test, coverage, XML, and archive evidence. It requires an ordinary assertion failure with the installer identity and nearby checksum error.

The output-failure regression also requires an ordinary failure when archive upload succeeds. The pinned action passes output values through quoted explicit arguments. These changes do not turn installer or output failures into archive exceptions.

Keep the historical cause unresolved. The missing executable and container prevent identification of the source that produced the old mismatching bytes. That evidence gap does not invalidate the repair. The repair removes the installation-policy mismatch without accepting those bytes or changing the original expected digest.

Keep validation claims separate. I inspected the published checkout, immutable upstream installer, classifier, regression assertions, and developer guide. I did not run tests or Docker, re-download release bytes, or verify the reported cold/warm runs. The shallow checkout did not establish a reliable before-and-after comparison of unrelated pins. Keep hosted CI and artifact-transport confirmation separate from this disposition.

No further coding-agent prompt is needed for this provenance defect.

Thanks for clarifying the provenance limit.

Learning: In leynos/agent-template-python PR #96, commit 644eb111bd58ec4afffe902c7ec5fc1454b382c7 pins both generated generate-coverage callers to shared-actions revision ec1432aa6fa5379b2dd8f4b3402fd5b250a597bd. That revision installs official cargo-nextest 0.9.145 assets with separate archive and executable digest verification and no QuickInstall or source-build fallback. The earlier mismatching local executable and container were not retained, so its exact installation source remains unknown. Do not attribute those bytes to a specific fallback or describe the original 0.9.120 expected digest as incorrect.

@coderabbitai The four pre-merge findings in review 5535902952 have been addressed in 644eb111bd58ec4afffe902c7ec5fc1454b382c7 against the PR comparison base 3bc98c0848cae0e4875d56908ab603a9cd1d24fb. The current target is main at 269c60a3d32ef6f6778a36e18305a035a04849b1; synthetic merge 230b411ecf66a355ece49dc317eda7544c055b5a combines that target with the repair and preserves its dependency updates.

Dispositions:

  • Testing (Overall) (ERROR): aggregate contracts now require every new lint gate. Docker-free finite negative tests execute the actual configured DF12 Pylint, Ambrleaks, Vulture, and Nose tools against planted defects. Actions tests exercise discovery failure propagation and the successful validator/projection/Actionlint pipeline. Source-discovery tests verify forwarding to formatting and typechecking as well as lint tools.
  • User-Facing Documentation (WARN): docs/migrating-to-python-3.12.md, linked from the outer users’ guide, explains the next applicable template release, raising an older recorded Copier baseline, updating safely, reviewing conflicts, and validating the stricter gates. It does not invent a release number.
  • Developer Documentation (WARN): the outer developer guide now describes the complete lint, formatting, Markdown, spelling, Go, and Rust prerequisites. ADR-001 retains its original decision verbatim and appends a dated 2026-10-15 addendum recording the changed quality contract.
  • Testing (Property / Proof) (WARN): Hypothesis now generates valid Act traces under identity/log-shape variations and error-looking non-failure noise, plus invalid traces with independent failures or incorrect failure provenance. These are finite property tests, not formal proofs. They supplement the named missing-Go, early-failure, coverage, XML, language-test, and archive-exception regressions.

Hosted CI 38846263940 passed on synthetic merge 230b411ecf66a355ece49dc317eda7544c055b5a (151 passed, 2 opt-in Act skips, 3 snapshots). Hosted Act Validation 38846263939 is still running; its result and the hosted coverage-report download remain pending and are not claimed here.. Both real Docker-backed Act variants were exercised; both passed with valid package-bearing coverage XML and neither used an xfail. Complete local logs and generated coverage XML are retained. This response reconciles the existing four findings; it does not establish hosted Act success or request a fresh formal review.

Please confirm the disposition of each named row against this published candidate, or provide a bounded AI coding agent prompt for any remaining substantive gap. This is a focused reconciliation of these findings.

@pandalump Treat all four named pre-merge findings as addressed in 644eb111bd58ec4afffe902c7ec5fc1454b382c7. Direct candidate inspection supports these dispositions. No remaining substantive gap was identified within this focused scope.

Named row Disposition Verified evidence
Testing (Overall) Addressed Aggregate contracts require lint-python, dead-code, duplication, and lint-actions. Negative tests run the configured DF12 Pylint, Ambrleaks, Vulture, and Nose scanners against planted defects and require relevant diagnostics. Actions recipe tests cover discovery-failure propagation and validator/projection/Actionlint wiring. Source-discovery tests check forwarding to formatting and typechecking in both variants.
User-Facing Documentation Addressed docs/migrating-to-python-3.12.md states the new minimum baseline. It explains updating the recorded Copier answer, checking runtime compatibility, reviewing conflicts, and validating the expanded gates. The outer users’ guide links to it. It does not invent a release number.
Developer Documentation Addressed docs/developers-guide.md describes the expanded lint, formatting, Markdown, spelling, and toolchain requirements. ADR-001 includes the dated 2026-10-15 addendum without replacing the original decision section.
Testing (Property / Proof) Addressed Hypothesis varies root and nested identities, event ordering, key casing, non-failure noise, and parent-failure propagation. Negative properties introduce independent failures, incorrect roots or stages, and missing required error evidence. These are bounded property tests, not formal proofs.

Keep the Actions-test claim precise. The new recipe tests use command stubs to verify orchestration and failure propagation. They do not independently establish real validator correctness. The real-scanner negative tests are separate.

Updated hosted status

Both named runs now report completed / success:

The Act run also contains an unexpired act-coverage-evidence artifact. Its upload step succeeded. Keep downloaded-report validation separate: I did not download the artifact or validate its XML.

Verification boundary

I inspected the published candidate, regression assertions, documentation, and hosted run/job metadata. I did not execute tests or Docker. The comparison base was unavailable in the shallow checkout, so I could not verify the base-to-candidate diff or independently establish the synthetic merge composition.

No further coding-agent prompt is needed for these four findings. This disposition does not refresh the pre-merge banner, start a formal review, or approve the PR.

Learning: For agent-template-python PR #96, keep Act artifact-publication compatibility separate from test and coverage validation. The intended caller policy uses generate-coverage's publish-artefact input with `${{ env.ACT != 'true' }}` in both generated coverage workflows. Preserve real actions, checksum verification, language-test success, coverage evidence, and valid package-bearing Cobertura XML. Treat the mime_type/CreateArtifact protocol failure as an ordinary failure, not an extension of the legacy archive xfail. Verify artifact transport separately on GitHub.

@coderabbitai Follow-up to the artifact-protocol assessment: published repair 644eb111bd58ec4afffe902c7ec5fc1454b382c7 uses the existing publish-artefact input with ${{ env.ACT != 'true' }} in both generated coverage callers. Actual GitHub publication stays enabled. Both real generated workflows still execute tests, coverage generation, output checks, and the coverage ratchet under the CI-pinned Act 0.2.84 and lightweight image. The classifier and its narrow legacy exception were not broadened; a new synthetic regression requires the observed mime_type/CreateArtifact failure to remain an ordinary failure.

Stable ACT_EVIDENCE_DIR retention preserves complete logs and existing XML before result assertions, including failed runs. Parent Act Validation separately uploads both retained reports through pinned official upload-artifact. Contract tests exercise the ACT predicate and reject missing, constant, or inverted publication policies.

Validation: All local gates passed. Hosted CI 38846263940 passed (151 tests, 2 opt-in Act skips, 3 snapshots). Hosted Act Validation 38846263939 passed through the real make test WITH_ACT=1 invocation (153 tests and 3 snapshots, no xfail). Both checked out synthetic merge 230b411ecf66a355ece49dc317eda7544c055b5a, whose parents were independently verified as current main 269c60a3d32ef6f6778a36e18305a035a04849b1 and published head 644eb111bd58ec4afffe902c7ec5fc1454b382c7..

Hosted transport round trip: Artifact act-coverage-evidence / 12024357762 was downloaded from the successful exact-head run, and both expected XML files were parsed and validated locally. pure-artefacts/coverage.xml: 3 package entries, line-rate 0.9842, SHA256 aa07da5f882693c4d32428846393c7d9da84b6fd2832952edf48f09f2a9ea31d. rust-artefacts/coverage.xml: 4 package entries, line-rate 0.9692307692307692, SHA256 3d5d039fe797d326b464f1b1dcf6aeed47897d5f02a8df468526464c9048ab35. The upload contains the two coverage XML reports; complete Act logs are retained separately, not claimed as uploaded files.. This is distinct from the local Act computation pass.

Please confirm whether this specific caller/transport contract is resolved for the published candidate, or identify the remaining defect and provide a bounded AI coding agent prompt. This is a focused disposition rather than a fresh formal review request.

@pandalump Treat the specific caller/transport contract as resolved in 644eb111bd58ec4afffe902c7ec5fc1454b382c7. Source inspection and the downloaded hosted artifact support this disposition. No remaining substantive defect was identified within this scope.

Contract Verified evidence
Act-only publication restriction Both generated coverage callers use ${{ env.ACT != 'true' }}. Both retain with-ratchet: 'true'.
Publication-policy regression tests Contracts reject missing, constant, and inverted publication policies.
Protocol-failure classification The synthetic mime_type/CreateArtifact regression requires an ordinary assertion failure. The classifier still requires the specific legacy collision and empty-name messages.
Evidence retention The integration helper copies existing coverage XML before result assertions. run_act retains the complete ordered log.
Hosted transport Parent Act Validation uses SHA-pinned official actions/upload-artifact to upload both reports. The downloaded artifact contains exactly the two expected XML files.

Independent hosted verification

Both Hosted CI and Hosted Act Validation report completed / success for the published head.

The synthetic merge commit has the two stated parents: target 269c60a3… and repair 644eb111….

I downloaded artifact 12024357762 and parsed both reports:

Report Package entries Line rate SHA-256
pure-artefacts/coverage.xml 3 0.9842 Matches your supplied digest
rust-artefacts/coverage.xml 4 0.9692307692307692 Matches your supplied digest

Keep the validation scope explicit. This confirms hosted transport of the retained Act reports through the parent workflow. It does not establish that Act’s emulated artifact server supports the shared action’s upload protocol. The artifact contains coverage reports, not complete Act logs.

I used the existing learning about the Act publication boundary. I inspected source and hosted metadata and validated downloaded report bytes. I did not rerun tests or Docker.

No further coding-agent prompt is needed for this contract. This disposition does not start a formal review or approve the PR.

Comment thread tests/helpers/ci_contracts.py Resolved
Retain partial Act output on timeout and copy existing coverage reports even
when execution raises. Document the Go contract helper's public interface.

Check default Git source discovery before generated Python gates and the
initial aggregate build. Preserve explicit source overrides and keep direct
help and build targets independent of discovery.

Exercise failed discovery, generated wheel upload wiring, quoted output
arguments, and Python 3.13/3.14 propagation through downstream workflows.
Document the checked discovery boundary in both developer guides.

@coderabbitai Have the following pre-merge findings now been resolved for published repair 82bff4a, based on target 269c60a (original PR comparison: 3bc98c0)?

Original findings: #96 (comment)

Pre-merge checks failed

Failed Failed checks: 2 errors

Check name Status Explanation Resolution
Testing (Unit And Behavioural) Error The new tests cover the action-validation pipeline, lint failures, CI contracts, and Act diagnostics. They do not verify all changed workflow behaviour. The pure wheel action now adds `upload-artefact… Add generated-project behavioural tests for the pure wheel action. Unit Architecture Error The new Python source discovery hides a fallible external read. template/Makefile.jinja:24-25 evaluates git ls-files inside Make’s $(shell ...) expansion. Make suppresses the command status, so … Move Git source discovery behind an explicit, checked boundary. Add a small discovery command or target that verifies git and repository state, reports the original error, and exits non-zero on failure. Make the formatting, lint, and type…

Dispositions and evidence:

  • Testing (Unit And Behavioural): 82bff4a adds parsed pure-wheel contracts for the optional string-true upload input, the upload action path and exact condition, output environment mapping, quoting, and upload path. Negative mutations demonstrate detection. A real Bash invocation from a rendered project observes a spaced output directory as one uv argument. Pure and Rust renders at both Python 3.13 and 3.14 follow the selected version through audit, coverage-main, release, reusable wheel workflow, and local action setup-python boundaries. Final normal suite: 183 passed, 2 opt-in Act skips, 3 snapshots. Formatting, Ruff and 100% docstring coverage, typechecking, spelling, Markdownlint, Mermaid checks, and diff checks passed. Hosted CI and Act Validation for this published head are in progress; this disposition reports verified local results and published source.
  • Unit Architecture: 82bff4a adds a checked recipe-time Git listing prerequisite before source-dependent targets and before the initial all build. It retains Git's diagnostic and fails before tools. Direct help/build remain independent, and externally supplied source lists preserve their override semantics. Actual Git in a non-repository render, missing Git, controlled listing failure, and explicit override cases exercise the boundary.

Documentation scope: both developer guides describe the checked default discovery boundary, its failure behavior, and Git initialization. Existing user guidance and its accessible flow caption remain intact.

Do not treat warnings as optional or aspirational. Please confirm the resolved rows and provide an AI coding agent prompt for any valid remaining work. Please keep separately planned follow-up actions outside this PR's scope.

@pandalump Treat both named pre-merge findings as resolved in 82bff4a3ac72e48b5febb80efe21461ad3934d6e. Direct source inspection supports both dispositions. No remaining substantive gap was identified within this scope.

Named row Disposition Verified evidence
Testing (Unit And Behavioural) Resolved Parsed wheel contracts check the optional string-'true' upload default, exact upload condition, upload action path, OUT_DIR mapping, quoted build command, and upload path. Negative mutations exercise those assertions. A generated-project test runs the actual build script through Bash with a recording uv stub and requires a spaced output directory to remain one argument. Pure and Rust renders at Python 3.13 and 3.14 check version propagation through audit, coverage-main, release, reusable wheel workflow, and local action setup.
Unit Architecture Resolved The phony check-python-sources prerequisite checks Git listing status and preserves Git’s diagnostic. It precedes build work for all, fmt, check-fmt, lint-python, and typecheck. The existing .NOTPARALLEL setting preserves that ordering. Regression tests cover controlled listing failure, missing Git, a real non-repository failure, prerequisite removal or misordering, and an explicit source-list override.

Keep the architecture claim precise. PYTHON_TARGETS still uses $(shell git ls-files ...). The repair adds the explicit checked prerequisite permitted by the original finding. It prevents the identified missing-Git and non-repository cases from continuing into build or source tools. It does not replace discovery with a single captured result.

Both developer guides document the checked boundary and Git initialization. Direct help and build remain independent of that boundary. Explicit PYTHON_TARGETS overrides bypass default discovery.

Validation boundary

  • Hosted CI 38873174231 reports completed / success for this published head.
  • Hosted Act Validation 38873174286 remains in progress at the last check. Keep that result pending.
  • I inspected the published source, regression assertions, target-to-candidate diff, and hosted metadata. I did not execute tests or Docker. Treat the reported local counts as author-provided results.

No further coding-agent prompt is needed for these two findings. Keep separately planned follow-up work outside this PR’s scope. This disposition does not refresh the pre-merge banner, start a formal review, or approve the PR.

Learning: In leynos/agent-template-python, generated-project quality gates require Git initialization at the generated project root before their first run. This prerequisite is documented in docs/users-guide.md and template/docs/users-guide.md.jinja. template/Makefile.jinja uses Git metadata for both Python source discovery and mdtablefix's --git mode; a Python-only non-Git fallback would not cover the complete quality-gate contract.

Document the pin used by make typecheck.

Replace the dev-dependency explanation with TY_VERSION and the isolated $(TY) command. The generated typecheck recipe now runs uv tool run; changing only the dev dependency does not change that command’s pin. As per coding guidelines, “New or changed internal APIs, architectural boundaries or abstractions, tooling or build requirements must be clearly documented in the developer's guide (docs/developers-guide.md).”

Unit Architecture: the default PYTHON_TARGETS assignment no longer executes Git. The phony check-python-sources recipe captures exactly one git ls-files result into a simply-expanded Make variable, immediately checks that same invocation's .SHELLSTATUS, and raises a Make error before consumers on nonzero status. All consumers use the captured list. There is no separate guard listing or second Git read. Overrides bypass discovery; help/build remain independent. Contracts reject the old hidden global read, removal of the status check, and a duplicate read. The generated regression uses a Git stub that returns sources once then fails if invoked again, and invokes all four source consumers together; it verifies one call and forwarding to actual Ruff/Interrogate/Pylint/ty commands. An empty successful source list retains its existing semantics. Missing Git and a real nonrepository failure still stop before tools. GNU Make 4.4.1's separate temporary experiment also confirmed ordering, first-call failure, explicit overrides, and help independence.

User-Facing Documentation: docs/users-guide.md now documents make markdownlint, standalone spelling, and make audit for Python and optional Rust dependencies. Its original requested Mermaid diagram/caption and Python 3.12 migration link are preserved.

Developer Documentation: docs/developers-guide.md now explains the action adapter's uv run --script invocation, action-validator metadata checks, composite workflow_dispatch/string-input/unchanged-step projection, Actionlint standard-input check, Node/Docker no-projection path, and standard-error/nonzero failure contract. It documents the single captured source list and GNU Make requirement.

Outside-diff typecheck finding: the developer guide now attributes the generated pin to TY_VERSION and the isolated $(TY) command, rather than the dev dependency group.

Outside-diff spelling finding: removing --scope all would contradict the accepted repository-wide spelling requirement and the supplied quality-gate diagram. The generated Make recipe retains all scope. ADR-006 preserves its original decision text and adds a dated addendum recording this expanded scope; both guides and the generated Make contract remain aligned. Please confirm this scope disposition rather than narrow the requested gate.

Validation: 38 focused tests; formatting, lint (100% docstrings), typechecking, spelling, Markdown and Mermaid checks passed. Both real generated Act variants passed without xfail, with valid3/4-package coverage XML and no failed-step events. The local normal suite passed156 tests with2Act skips, then the shared compiler-admission supervisor refused the Rust build as unhealthy. This is not a full local normal-suite pass. Hosted CI38947784084 and Act Validation38947783981 for this published head remain in progress.

Please confirm each named finding is resolved for this published candidate, or identify a concrete remaining in-scope defect and provide an AI coding agent prompt for it. This is focused finding reconciliation, not a request to start a fresh formal review or make commits.

@pandalump Treat the three pre-merge rows as resolved for 98f0d49b59b4809e33e79df69943bed33663eb52. Treat the two inline findings and the typecheck documentation finding as addressed. Withdraw the spelling-scope finding.

Source inspection supports these dispositions. No remaining substantive defect was identified within this focused scope.

Pre-merge rows

Finding Disposition Verified evidence
Unit Architecture Resolved PYTHON_TARGETS ?= no longer performs discovery. check-python-sources captures one git ls-files result with := and immediately checks that invocation’s .SHELLSTATUS. Consumers share the captured list. Contracts reject the old global read, a missing status check, and duplicate discovery. Explicit overrides bypass discovery. help and build remain independent.
User-Facing Documentation Resolved docs/users-guide.md documents make markdownlint, standalone make spelling, and make audit for Python and optional Rust dependencies. It retains the Python 3.12 migration link, diagram, and accessible caption.
Developer Documentation Resolved docs/developers-guide.md explains the adapter invocation, temporary workflow projection, string inputs, unchanged steps, validator responsibilities, Node/Docker no-projection path, and standard-error/nonzero failure contract. Both developer guides document single-result discovery and GNU Make 4.2 or newer.

Keep the discovery-test claim precise. The single-result regression invokes Make with -n. Make executes the recipe-expansion discovery, while the test inspects the emitted Ruff, Interrogate, Pylint, and ty command arguments. It does not execute those scanners. Separate failure regressions check that discovery errors stop build and tool invocation. This distinction does not reopen the architecture finding.

Findings from review 5551214342

Finding Disposition Verified evidence
Reject upload actions without a ref Addressed The wheel contract validates the complete uses value with re.fullmatch. The empty-upload-ref mutation supplies actions/upload-artifact@ and requires rejection.
Move mutation dispatch into a helper Addressed _mutate_upload_boundary uses match. Its default branch raises ValueError. A separate regression checks unknown mutation names.
Document the typecheck pin Addressed The developer guide identifies TY_VERSION and the isolated $(TY) command. It no longer attributes that command’s pin to the development dependency group.
Remove --scope all Withdrawn Repository-wide spelling is the requested contract. ADR-006’s dated addendum explicitly supersedes the earlier generated-project Markdown-only scope. The Make recipe and guides agree. Removing --scope all would narrow the required gate.

Thanks for clarifying the spelling scope.

Validation boundary

  • Both Hosted CI 38947784084 and Act Validation 38947783981 remained in progress when inspected. Both identify the requested published head.
  • Retain the local normal-suite result as incomplete because of the reported compiler-admission refusal. Do not describe it as a full pass.
  • I inspected the exact-head source, regression assertions, review text, edited walkthrough, target-to-head diff, and hosted metadata. I did not execute repository code, tests, or Docker.

No coding-agent prompt is needed for these findings. Keep separately planned follow-up work outside this PR. This reconciliation does not refresh the banner, start a formal review, approve the PR, or bulk-resolve review threads.

Timestamp: 2026-10-16T18:36:00.470Z
Learning: In leynos/agent-template-python, generated projects intentionally use repository-wide spelling through `typos-config-builder gate --repository . --scope all` in `template/Makefile.jinja`. The 2026-10-16 addendum in `docs/adr-006-shared-typos-config-builder-gate.md` supersedes the original generated-project Markdown-only scope while preserving the original decision text. Do not recommend removing `--scope all` to restore the old scope. `make spelling` is the single spelling gate, and `make markdownlint` invokes it after Markdown linting.

@coderabbitai Have these two current pre-merge warnings in #96 (comment) now been resolved for published head 5a96a71, targeting main dcf24fd?

Current failed checks: 2 warnings:

  • Developer Documentation: the adapter design is absent from the quality-gates ADR.
  • Observability: retained Act logs are not uploaded as hosted evidence after early failures or timeouts.

Dispositions and evidence:

  • Developer Documentation — fixed in docs/adr-001-template-quality-gates.md, append-only 2026-10-16 addendum: action-validator owns metadata; composite actions project to workflow_dispatch for Actionlint; string inputs/steps are preserved; Node/Docker actions are skipped by the adapter; file/YAML/shape failures emit stderr and exit 1. Existing developer-guide operational documentation is preserved.
  • Observability — fixed in .github/workflows/act-validation.yml: a separate always() step uploads both pure-artefacts/act.log and rust-artefacts/act.log to act-diagnostic-logs, with missing logs warning. The separate coverage upload retains both exact XML paths and if-no-files-found:error. Tests in tests/test_parent_ci.py assert action SHA shape, both log paths, ordering, always(), separate name, and missing-file policy. Existing combined/partial log retention is unchanged.

Sequential validation: 13 parent-CI tests passed; formatting, lint, typechecking, spelling, configured Markdownlint (24 files/0 errors), Mermaid validation, and diff check passed. Fresh hosted CI and Act Validation for this head are running; full integration success remains pending. The prior runtime head passed hosted normal 190 tests and Act 192 tests; local full normal was separately blocked by unhealthy compiler admission, not reported as a local full pass.

The three assertion diagnostics from formal5552709448 were separately fixed in d541b74, preserved here, with focused14tests and code gates passing; inline reply #96 (comment) addresses the original finding. Earlier substantive dispositions are #96 (comment) and remain unchanged.

Please confirm each row against the published source, or identify the remaining defect and provide an AI coding agent prompt. Do not treat warnings as optional. This is focused reconciliation of these two rows and the existing assertion fix, not a fresh whole-PR inspection request. Please state any analysis/access limitations.

@buzzybee-df12 Treat both pre-merge warnings as resolved in 5a96a71fce3ab9e623af997e1e973bdc4dafe881. Treat the assertion-diagnostic finding as addressed and preserved. Direct inspection supports these dispositions.

Finding Disposition Verified evidence
Developer Documentation Resolved docs/adr-001-template-quality-gates.md contains the 2026-10-16 adapter addendum. It separates metadata validation from composite-workflow projection. It documents input and step preservation, Node/Docker no-projection behavior, and standard-error/status-1 failures. The target-to-head diff is append-only. The developer guide retains the operational documentation.
Observability Resolved .github/workflows/act-validation.yml adds a separate always() upload for both retained act.log paths. It uses a full-SHA-pinned upload action, the name act-diagnostic-logs, and if-no-files-found: warn. This step precedes the separate coverage upload. The coverage upload retains both exact XML paths and if-no-files-found: error.
Three assertion diagnostics Addressed test_python_gates_share_one_checked_git_result now reports an unexpected Git call count, a second discovery, and stale arguments for an empty source list. The combined source-exclusion assertion remains intact.

The parent-CI contracts check the log upload’s action SHA shape, paths, name, condition, ordering after tests, and missing-file policy. The existing helper still captures ordered combined output. It writes partial output before re-raising subprocess.TimeoutExpired.

Keep the timeout claim bounded. This repair uploads retained logs after an early Act failure or a caught subprocess timeout. It does not guarantee an upload after runner loss or forced job termination.

Validation and access limits

  • Hosted CI 38957326173 and Act Validation 38957326322 remain in progress for the requested head.
  • I inspected the exact-head source, contracts, original findings, and target-to-head ADR diff.
  • Commit d541b745… is unavailable in the shallow checkout. I verified the assertion fix directly in the published head instead.
  • I did not run tests or Docker, or download a diagnostic artifact from this head. Keep the reported local validation separate from pending hosted results.

No remaining in-scope defect was identified. No coding-agent prompt is needed. This reconciliation does not refresh the banner, start a formal review, approve the PR, or bulk-resolve threads.

Learning: In leynos/agent-template-python, docs/adr-005-assert-workflow-shape-not-shas.md prohibits contract tests from hard-coding a specific reusable-workflow commit SHA. Validate the correct workflow path and full 40-character SHA shape instead, so Dependabot can update pins without changing test constants. For tests/helpers/wheel_contracts.py, the upload-action reference contract must reject an empty ref without hard-coding a particular release SHA.

@coderabbitai approve

Published head: 5a96a71; target main: dcf24fd.
The latest completed formal round, #96 (review), requested only assertion diagnostics. Those messages are fixed and confirmed in #96 (comment). The two subsequent banner warnings, Developer Documentation and Observability, are repaired and verified against this exact head in #96 (comment). This is the final approval step after those specific confirmations, not a request to repeat whole-PR inspection.

Earlier substantive findings: source-discovery single-result checking, user/developer guidance, isolated typecheck pin, upload-ref assertion, and mutation dispatch are confirmed resolved in #96 (comment) and inline confirmations #96 (comment) and #96 (comment). The spelling-scope narrowing suggestion was withdrawn because repository-wide spelling is required. The pre-command snapshot contains 16 resolved threads and no unresolved thread.

Pre-merge checks: The refreshed first walkthrough still displays Developer Documentation and Observability warnings from the reviewed head; both specific rows are explicitly resolved for this exact published head in confirmation 6223419361. The other 13 rows pass. No new row or finding is present.
CI: https://github.com/leynos/agent-template-python/actions/runs/38957326173 passed 190 tests, 2 opt-in Act skips, and 3 snapshots, testing merge a8d1fb9 (main dcf24fd + this head). Act Validation https://github.com/leynos/agent-template-python/actions/runs/38957326322 passed 192 tests and 3 snapshots on the same synthetic merge.. Both downloaded coverage XML reports are valid (3/4 packages, 98.42%/96.92%); both newly downloaded diagnosticlogs contain 1023/2058 JSON events and zero failed-step events. Coverage artefact 12071719558 and diagnostic artefact 12071819431 both uploaded successfully. Local focused validation, formatting, lint, typing, spelling, Markdown, and diagram checks passed sequentially. Both real local Act variants passed on the unchanged generated-workflow runtime. The earlier local full normal-suite attempt was blocked by unhealthy compiler admission; it is not claimed as a local full pass. Current hosted normal validation covers those native and remaining tests.

Rebase/stack state: Live SSH refs confirm main dcf24fd and head 5a96a71 unchanged; PR targets main, mergeable, ready, no dependent PRs. Strict freshness is disabled by the active rules; both required checks test and act-validation pass. No rebase or prerequisite is needed.
Please approve if those findings are resolved. If approval remains blocked, identify the specific unresolved finding or missing required inspection.

Learning: For agent-template-python PR #96, keep Act artifact-publication compatibility separate from test and coverage validation. The intended caller policy uses generate-coverage's publish-artefact input with `${{ env.ACT != 'true' }}` in both generated coverage workflows. Preserve real actions, checksum verification, language-test success, coverage evidence, and valid package-bearing Cobertura XML. Treat the mime_type/CreateArtifact protocol failure as an ordinary failure, not an extension of the legacy archive xfail. Verify artifact transport separately on GitHub.
