Problem

lint-test has failed on every push to main since run 38987616012, at "Save the compiler cache" with No space left on device. Pull-request runs never save, so they stayed green.

Cause: the 0.2.0-beta2 version bump (#634) misses every Rust sccache entry (Rust hit rate 98.55% on the last green run, 0.10% after). The restored 1.83 GB cache grows to 3 GiB, and its archive does not fit in the 2.1 GB left on the 73 GB volume. A trial with the versions reverted gave 97.2% Rust hits (run 39180974237). Every version bump will repeat this.

Change

  • A first step after checkout, sudo rm -rf /usr/local/lib/android /usr/share/dotnet guarded by runner.os == 'Linux', in every job that writes a compiler cache: lint-test, typecheck-test, extension-tests, benchmark-ratchet and loom. The trial measured 18 s and 16.9 GB freed: 19.3 GB free at the save point, against 2.1 GB.
  • tests/test_ci_free_disk.py: each writer in CACHE_WRITERS["SCCACHE_CACHE_KEY"] must declare the step once, remove both directories, guard it to Linux and place it before its first cache step. Mutation: dropping .NET from loom, a non-Linux guard and a renamed step each fail the test.

No runs-on line changes.

Gates

make check-fmt, make lint, make test-workflow-contracts, make test and the new test pass locally.

Reviewer's Guide

The PR prevents compiler-cache saves from exhausting Linux runner disks by deleting unused Android and .NET installations before cache restores/saves, and adds a contract test that enforces the cleanup's presence, Linux guard, required paths, and ordering across all compiler-cache writers.

Free unused Android SDK and .NET directories before compiler-cache operations in all relevant Linux cache-writing jobs.
  • Added a guarded cleanup step that reports disk usage, removes the unused toolchains with sudo, and reports disk usage again.
  • Placed the cleanup before the first cache step in lint-test, typecheck-test, extension-tests, benchmark-ratchet, and loom without changing runner types.
.github/workflows/ci.yml
.github/workflows/loom.yml
Added a workflow contract test to enforce disk cleanup coverage and ordering for compiler-cache writers.
  • Checks that each SCCACHE cache writer declares exactly one named cleanup step.
  • Verifies both directories are removed under a Linux guard before any cache operation.
  • Uses parametrization and mutation-sensitive assertions to prevent omissions or step reordering.

Walkthrough

The CI and Loom workflows add Linux-only cleanup before cache operations. The cleanup removes the preinstalled Android SDK and .NET directories. Contract tests validate the commands, guards, paths, count, and ordering.

Changes

CI disk cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pre-cache workflow cleanup
.github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/loom.yml
The four CI jobs and the Loom workflow add Linux-only cleanup before cache operations. The typecheck-test cleanup also requires LEG_RUNS == 'true'.
Cleanup contract and documentation
tests/test_ci_free_disk.py, docs/developers-guide.md
The contract test parses recursive removal commands and checks the cleanup count, paths, Linux guard, and ordering. The developer guide documents the affected jobs and conditions.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 7 functions across 1 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

Accept the testing coverage. tests/test_ci_free_disk.py:26-79 parses executable shell segments and requires rm with a recursive option and both exact directory operands. Its cases at tests/test_ci_free_disk.py:82-111 reject printed paths, inspected paths, quoted diagnostics, comments, non-recursive removal, and separate commands. The workflow contract at tests/test_ci_free_disk.py:118-145 reads each writer from CACHE_WRITERS, requires one cleanup step, checks the command, Linux guard, and ordering. This test would fail for the prior no-op echo implementation and exercises the changed workflow behaviour. Prior failure addressed: The new _has_recursive_removal assertion at tests/test_ci_free_disk.py:128-131 requires executable recursive rm with both paths. Negative cases at lines 82-111 reject echo-only and other non-removal commands.

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

Pass: the pull request changes only Linux CI disk cleanup, workflow contract tests, and developer documentation. It does not add or change user-facing functionality or behaviour. docs/users-guide.md is unchanged, so the user-facing documentation requirement does not apply.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

The developer guide now documents the new CI tooling requirement. It names all five compiler-cache writers, both removal paths, the Linux guard, the additional LEG_RUNS == 'true' condition for typecheck-test, unchanged runner selection, ordering before the first cache operation, and tests/test_ci_free_disk.py as the contract test. The workflow diff confirms these details. No separate architecture or ADR update is required for this operational cleanup rule. Prior failure addressed: docs/developers-guide.md lines 310-318 now record the affected jobs, both paths, Linux and LEG_RUNS guards, pre-cache ordering, runner stability, and the contract test.

Full details: Module-Level Documentation

Explanation

Pass this check. The new module tests/test_ci_free_disk.py has a module docstring that states its purpose as a contract test, explains its utility for preventing compiler-cache disk failures, and identifies its relationship to cache-writing Linux jobs. No other Python module changes lack module-level documentation.

Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)

Explanation

Pass the testing check. tests/test_ci_free_disk.py:82-114 covers valid recursive removals and rejects printed, inspected, commented, non-recursive, and split-path commands. tests/test_ci_free_disk.py:117-146 reads the declared workflow jobs and checks the cleanup count, command, Linux guard, exact directories, and ordering before cache use. This exercises the workflow contract boundary rather than only testing an internal helper. Existing cache-ownership coverage also verifies that CACHE_WRITERS matches actual save steps (tests/test_ci_cache_ownership.py:162-180).

Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)

Explanation

PASS — Property testing is not required. The new contract checks a finite set of five declared compiler-cache writers with pytest parameterization (tests/test_ci_free_disk.py:117-146). The shell recognizer uses a small, explicit table of eight meaningful positive and negative command cases (tests/test_ci_free_disk.py:82-114). The cleanup ordering and Linux-guard requirements are also directly auditable from the parameterized workflow contract. No introduced invariant spans enough meaningful inputs to require Hypothesis or another property-testing framework.

Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)

Explanation

Pass this check. The pull request changes YAML workflows, Markdown, and Python contract tests; it introduces no Rust or TypeScript compile-time behaviour, so no trybuild-equivalent test is required. The structured workflow contract is covered with focused semantic assertions and parametrized positive and negative shell-command cases in tests/test_ci_free_disk.py:82-146, rather than a brittle whole-file snapshot. No text or UI output requires snapshot coverage.

Full details: Unit Architecture

Explanation

Pass. The change adds only explicit CI side-effects and contract tests. The cleanup is visible as a named workflow step with a Linux guard, sudo rm -rf, strict shell handling, and explicit paths. The new test reads workflow declarations through the existing fallible loader and asserts the cleanup command and ordering. It does not add query APIs, hidden state, network calls, clocks, or application dependencies. The fixed filesystem paths are deliberate CI policy at the workflow boundary, not hidden dependencies in a domain unit.

Full details: Domain Architecture

Explanation

Pass this check. The pull request changes only GitHub workflow steps, a workflow contract test, and developer documentation. It does not change domain logic, adapters, persistence, transport, or public application code. The cleanup remains infrastructure-scoped and is guarded within the workflows.

Full details: Observability

Explanation

Accept the observability coverage. The changed cleanup steps in .github/workflows/ci.yml and .github/workflows/loom.yml report filesystem usage before and after removal with df -m / (for example, .github/workflows/ci.yml:104-111 and .github/workflows/ci.yml:1686-1694). set -euo pipefail makes sudo or rm failures visible at the failure boundary. Existing cache observation summaries report cache keys and hit states, and the existing resource sampler records disk peaks for sampled jobs. The change adds no secrets, high-cardinality labels, tracing requirement, or new alert requirement.

A version bump misses every Rust sccache entry, so the archive grows to
about 3 GiB and no longer fits in the 2 GB left on ubicloud-standard-2.
Free the two preinstalled toolchains in every job that saves a compiler
cache, and add a contract that holds each such job to it.
Parse cleanup commands as shell invocations so workflow contracts reject
mere path mentions that do not recursively remove both directories.
Document the cleanup steps and cache-writer conditions for maintainers.

Split recursive-option recognition and argument parsing into focused helpers. This keeps the workflow contract test readable and below the CodeScene complexity threshold.

@coderabbitai The walkthrough in comment 6268168060 still lists Testing (Overall) and Developer Documentation against an older candidate. Both rows are addressed on base f89f93cd3c31ab406673aa583d4f5275f7b98404, head 7c4e7041542aac8e7dd1190b32dbc02c883cc2d0:

  • Testing (Overall): commit 7f7be35d strengthens tests/test_ci_free_disk.py to require a recursive rm invocation with both exact directory operands. Negative cases reject output-only, inspection, comment-only, non-recursive and split-path commands.
  • Developer Documentation: commit 7f7be35d updates docs/developers-guide.md with the five cache-writing jobs, both paths, the Linux guard and ordering before the first cache operation.

make check-fmt, make lint, make typecheck, make test-workflow-contracts, make test, make markdownlint and make nixie all pass. Actions run 39453672554 completed all 16 jobs successfully at this head. The compiler-cache save step was skipped on this PR run; its actual main-branch archive write remains post-merge evidence.

CodeScene also approved this exact head after the Complex Method finding was addressed in 7c4e7041 (analysis). Please refresh or explicitly disposition the two pre-merge rows for the stated base and head.

@buzzybee-df12 Treat both pre-merge rows as addressed for this verified revision pair:

  • Base: f89f93cd3c31ab406673aa583d4f5275f7b98404
  • Head: 7c4e7041542aac8e7dd1190b32dbc02c883cc2d0
Pre-merge row Disposition Verified evidence
Testing (Overall) Addressed tests/test_ci_free_disk.py now requires one recursive rm invocation with both exact directory operands. Negative cases cover echoed paths, inspection, quoted diagnostic text, comments, non-recursive removal, and paths split across commands. The Linux guard and cache-order checks remain.
Developer Documentation Addressed docs/developers-guide.md now documents all five cache-writing jobs, both directories, the Linux guard, ordering before the first cache operation, and the contract test. It also documents the additional LEG_RUNS condition.

The walkthrough still identifies a55d3172 as its reviewed candidate. Its two outstanding rows therefore describe superseded content. This reply explicitly dispositions those rows; it does not update the walkthrough or provider approval status.

Actions run 39453672554 completed successfully at the exact head. All 16 jobs report success. I inspected the source and Actions metadata; I did not rerun the checks.

After merge, verify the actual compiler-cache archive write on main. The PR run skipped the explicit compiler-cache save steps, so that operational result remains unverified. It does not reopen either pre-merge finding.
