Reconcile release-help flags with the parser (#960) - #1044
The generated manual page described a parser Netsuke does not run. The
release-help projection took every configuration field's CLI shape from the ortho_config derive, which synthesizes a kebab-cased long flag and a short
flag from each Rust field name and emits no CLI metadata at all for fields
marked skip_cli.
As a result the manual advertised --default-targets and -d, both rejected
by the binary, and omitted --color, --emoji, --progress, --accessibility and --no-input, all accepted by it.
This change reconciles each configuration field's cli metadata from configured_command(None), the command users actually run. Help keys,
environment and file sources, value types and defaults are untouched. Value
names and possible values now also come from the parser, so placeholders such
as FILE, N and POLICY match --help.
Parser-only selectors (-C/--directory, --config) keep their declared
order, which mut_arg would otherwise disturb.
Tests
Bidirectional parity tests under src/cli/release_help/parity_tests/:
release_help_cli_value_shapes_match_the_parser compares every documented
flag's long and short spelling, multiplicity, hiding, value name, arity and
possible values with configured_command(None).
release_help_documents_every_parser_argument requires every root parser
argument to be documented exactly once.
documented_flags_match_the_parser pins the five policy flags, default-target, locale, fetch-allow-scheme and json individually.
The metadata snapshot is regenerated and records the corrected spellings and
the five previously undocumented policy flags. make check-fmt, make lint, make doc-coverage (98.21%), make test (4814/4814 plus doctests) and make markdownlint are green.
Renderer evidence
Generated with the pinned cargo-orthohelp 0.10.0 via scripts/generate-release-help.sh for x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu and x86_64-pc-windows-msvc:
OPTIONS lists --no-input and --color, --emoji, --progress and --accessibility with POLICY values auto, always, never and auto, on, off.
--default-target TARGET is documented; --default-targets and -d occur
nowhere in either man page.
ENVIRONMENT states the correct equivalent for each policy variable,
including NETSUKE_DEFAULT_TARGETS equivalent to --default-target.
The PowerShell MAML help carries the same corrected flag set.
Related
The upstream derive still synthesizes flag spellings that do not describe a
handwritten parser; Netsuke no longer depends on that projection. See leynos/ortho-config#631.
This change also corrects the placeholders tracked in #958, which remains
open.
Reconcile published release-help metadata with the CLI parser so generated documentation accurately reflects the supported command-line surface.
Bug Fixes:
Align release-help CLI metadata with the handwritten runtime parser so generated documentation no longer advertises rejected flags or omits accepted options.
Correct documented flag value names, multiplicity, optionality, and possible values to match parser behavior.
Enhancements:
Add bidirectional parity coverage ensuring every documented root argument matches the parser and every parser argument is documented exactly once.
Add rendered manual and PowerShell help surface checks to detect dropped or invented flags during release-help generation.
Document the revised CLI metadata source-of-truth and release-help coverage model.
CI:
Update release automation to use cargo-orthohelp 0.10.0 and verify the rendered help surface for each target.
Documentation:
Update architecture and developer documentation to describe parser-derived CLI shapes and the associated parity and renderer checks.
Tests:
Expand metadata, snapshot, script, and generated-help tests for corrected flag spellings, policy options, value placeholders, and renderer omissions.

Summary
Derive release-help CLI metadata from configured_command(None) to match the parser’s flag names and shapes.
Document --default-target=TARGET without a short alias. Add parser-backed metadata for --color, --emoji, --progress, --accessibility and --no-input.
Preserve configuration sources and help identifiers. Retain the declared order of parser-only selectors such as --config and --directory.
Add forward and reverse parser-parity tests. Include CLI value names in the metadata snapshot.
Update docs/developers-guide.md, docs/netsuke-design.md and ADR 0016 to explain the metadata source and prior mismatches. Link the changes to issue #960; do not treat them as completion of separate issue #958.
Test results: Not established by the supplied evidence.
Walkthrough
Release-help metadata now uses configured_command(None) for configuration fields. Generated help includes configuration-backed flags. Tests compare documented metadata with parser arguments and check selected rendered flags.
Changes
Release-help CLI metadata
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Project metadata from the configured parser src/cli/release_help/parser_fields.rs, src/cli/release_help/mod.rs, src/cli/release_help/metadata_tests.rs
Configuration fields receive metadata from matching documented root arguments. Parser-only fields use the shared translator for flag names, value shapes, accepted values, and help visibility.
The release-help renderer includes configuration-backed flags in man-page and PowerShell output. Script checks verify selected spellings and value names. The metadata snapshot includes value_name.
Tests compare release-help metadata with parser arguments in both directions and check nine flag cases. Documentation describes metadata sources, prior mismatches, and parity checks. The documented cargo-orthohelp version changes to 0.10.0.

Full details: Testing (Overall)
Explanation
Pass. Accept the test coverage. The forward parity test compares every documented flag with configured_command(None) for names, aliases, multiplicity, visibility, value arity, value names and possible values (src/cli/release_help/parity_tests/mod.rs:48-85,111-197). The reverse test requires every documentable root parser argument exactly once (mod.rs:218-245). Parameterized cases cover the corrected flags and rejected aliases (flag_cases.rs:24-172). Generated man-page and PowerShell checks verify that the reconciled metadata reaches release-help output and that --default-targets and -d/--default-target are absent (tests/release_help_script_tests.rs:240-269). These assertions would fail for omitted fields, invented aliases, wrong value shapes, or metadata that does not reach generated output.
Full details: User-Facing Documentation
Explanation
The user-facing CLI surface is already documented in docs/users-guide.md, which is unchanged by this PR. It lists --no-input, all four policy flags with their accepted values, and --default-target; it also explains policy behaviour and states that shipped manual pages and PowerShell help describe the complete public CLI. The PR corrects generated help metadata and artefacts, but does not add undocumented runtime functionality.
Full details: Developer Documentation
Explanation
Pass the documentation check. Update docs/developers-guide.md:4067-4114 with the parser-backed configured_command(None) boundary, changed flag behaviour, parity tests, and retained configuration metadata. Update docs/netsuke-design.md:3997-4043 with the architecture boundary and cargo-orthohelp 0.10.0 requirement. Record the decision in the dated addendum at docs/adrs/adr-0016-public-cli-metadata-source-of-truth.md:83-101. The PR adds no new execplan, changes no roadmap item, and changes no translated documentation.
Full details: Module-Level Documentation
Explanation
All changed and added Rust modules carry module-level //! documentation. The new parity modules explain their purpose and parser relationship (src/cli/release_help/parity_tests/mod.rs:1-10, flag_cases.rs:1-4). The updated parser module explains its relationship to command.rs and the parent projection (parser_fields.rs:1-9). Existing changed modules also retain clear purpose documentation (release_help/mod.rs:1-6, metadata_tests.rs:1-5, tests/release_help/mod.rs:1).
Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)
Explanation
Accept the testing coverage. The new parity tests compare release-help metadata with configured_command(None) for flag names, aliases, repeatability, visibility, value arity, value names and accepted values (src/cli/release_help/parity_tests/mod.rs:48-185). They also verify that every documentable root parser argument appears exactly once (:218-249) and pin key edge cases in nine table-driven flag cases (src/cli/release_help/parity_tests/flag_cases.rs:29-172). The release-help script tests exercise the generation boundary for Linux and Windows artefacts and reject the obsolete spellings (tests/release_help_script_tests.rs:46-175,240-269). Existing tests retain missing-argument and invalid-metadata error coverage.
Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)
Explanation
PASS. No property test is required for this change. The CLI surface is a finite, parser-defined set. release_help_cli_value_shapes_match_the_parser checks every documented CLI field against configured_command(None) (parity_tests/mod.rs:48-87), and release_help_documents_every_parser_argument checks every documentable root parser argument exactly once (parity_tests/mod.rs:208-247). The nine targeted regressions use a complete, readable rstest table (flag_cases.rs:29-172). The projection also has an existing proptest for varied configuration-field names (mod.rs:313-361). These tests cover the stated invariant without requiring generated arbitrary parser states.
Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)
Explanation
Pass the testing check. The change adds runtime metadata parity tests in src/cli/release_help/parity_tests/, including forward and reverse parser coverage, and explicit cases for flag spelling, value names, arity, multiplicity, accepted values, aliases and visibility. It adds focused snapshots for the stable metadata projection and generated man-page and PowerShell outputs. Renderer-boundary assertions also verify the corrected flags and reject --default-targets and -d. The changed Rust code adds runtime projection, not compile-time diagnostics or a type-level API, so a trybuild test is not required. The snapshots contain stable, meaningful CLI expectations without temporary paths, hashes, timestamps or secrets.
Full details: Unit Architecture
Explanation
Pass the Unit Architecture check. ReleaseHelpCli::try_get_doc_metadata builds parser metadata and keeps fallible help projection behind Result (src/cli/release_help/mod.rs:36-65, 108-145). cli_metadata_from_argument performs a read-only translation from Clap arguments (src/cli/release_help/parser_fields.rs:27-67). configured_command(None) constructs a local Clap command and installs value parsers; it does not execute a process, access external state, or publish side-effects (src/cli/parser/mod.rs:107-119). The new parity tests exercise the parser-to-metadata boundary directly (src/cli/release_help/parity_tests/mod.rs:34-232).
Full details: Domain Architecture
Explanation
PASS — preserve the domain boundary. The reviewed files add parser-backed metadata only in the src/cli/release_help adapter: ReleaseHelpCli reads CliConfig metadata and configured_command(None) at src/cli/release_help/mod.rs:38-64, then replaces only the release-help cli projection at :81-129. src/cli/release_help/parser_fields.rs:1-9,27-68 translates clap::Arg values into CliMetadata. The runtime CLI definitions remain in the CLI schema at src/cli/command.rs:1-15,42-169; no domain model or domain behaviour changes appear in the PR diff. Filesystem/process code is limited to release-help test fixtures in tests/release_help/mod.rs, which is an adapter-boundary test and not domain logic. Therefore the PR does not introduce the stated domain-architecture failure condition.
Full details: Observability
Explanation
Mark this check PASS. The pull request changes release-help projection, documentation, snapshots, and tests only. It does not change production request handling, services, storage, queues, retries, or resource behaviour. Therefore it introduces no operational failure mode that requires production logs, metrics, tracing, or alerts. The added parity and generated-output tests provide suitable build-time diagnostics for documentation drift.
Parser flags now shape the page, Names and values match the stage. Tests compare each documented sign, Help prints flags in the parser’s line. Nine flag cases join the rhyme, Metadata keeps pace with time.
The release-help projection now derives each documented CLI surface from Netsuke's handwritten runtime parser while retaining configuration metadata from OrthoConfig, eliminating rejected flags and missing options; new parity tests, snapshots, and developer documentation enforce the contract.

## Summary
The generated manual page advertises two flags that do not exist and omits five
that do. Both defects come from one cause: netsuke's `CliConfig` carries no
`cli(...)` attribute overrides, so `ortho_config`'s derive invents a flag
spelling from the Rust field name. Netsuke's real parser is handwritten in
`src/cli/command.rs` and never used the generated one, so the invented spelling
is a fiction the binary rejects.
Measured against the man page from the real `cargo-orthohelp` 0.10.0:
### Advertised but rejected
```roff
\fB\--default-targets\fR \fILIST\fR, \fB\-d\fR \fILIST\fR
Default build targets when none are specified.
```
The parser declares (`src/cli/command.rs:161-163`):
```rust
/// Default build targets used when none are specified on the CLI.
#[arg(long = "default-target", value_name = "TARGET")]
pub default_targets: Vec<String>,
```
Singular, and no short flag. So `--default-targets` and `-d` both exit 2, and
the ENVIRONMENT section's "Equivalent to `--default-targets`" is wrong twice
over. Anyone following the manual page gets a parse error.
The cause is `resolve_cli_field`
(`ortho_config_macros-0.10.0/src/derive/build/cli/cli_flags/mod.rs:103-145`):
the long flag is `attrs.cli_long` or the kebab-cased field identifier, and
`resolve_short_flag` (`.../cli_flags/validation.rs:138-163`) *always* derives a
short when `cli_short` is unset. There is no opt-out — no "no short flag"
spelling exists in the attribute grammar.
### Real but undocumented
Every one of these is accepted by the binary and printed by `--help`, yet
appears zero times in the man page's OPTIONS section:
| Flag | Parser declaration |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| `--color` | `src/cli/command.rs:146` (`POLICY`) |
| `--emoji` | `src/cli/command.rs:150` (`POLICY`) |
| `--progress` | `src/cli/command.rs:154` (`POLICY`) |
| `--accessibility`| `src/cli/command.rs:158` (`POLICY`) |
| `--no-input` | `src/cli/command.rs:234` (switch) |
Census over the OPTIONS block (`sed -n '9,99p'`) returns 0 for each. They
appear only as configuration keys under FILES and as `NETSUKE_*` variables under
ENVIRONMENT — a real inconsistency, since a reader is told the setting exists
but never that a flag reaches it.
## Can netsuke fix this now?
**Yes for the omissions, which have no upstream dependency. The invented flags
need one upstream addition.**
### Omissions — netsuke-side, no upstream change
These five fields carry `#[ortho_config(skip_cli)]` (`src/cli/config/mod.rs`, the
five `skip_cli` policy fields), so `build_cli_tokens`
(`ortho_config_macros-0.10.0/src/derive/generate/docs/fields/mod.rs:208-211`)
returns `cli: None` and the renderers skip the field entirely.
The projection layer is the right place to fix it.
`localized_config_help` (`src/cli/release_help/mod.rs`) already rewrites each
configuration field's `help_id` and reduces boolean fields to presence-only
switches; it can equally attach a `CliMetadata` for fields the real parser
accepts as a flag. The names and value names are all knowable — either from
`Cli::command()` directly (the parity test already holds the parsed `Command`)
or from a small declared table.
The cleanest form is to build the CLI metadata from the parser rather than
hand-declaring it: `src/cli/release_help/parser_fields.rs` already does exactly
this for parser-only selectors (`config`, `directory`), and its
`parser_only_value_type` bail is the only thing scoping it to those two. Merging
the two paths would give the man page one source of truth for flag shape.
### Invented flags — needs an upstream attribute
`#[ortho_config(cli(long = "default-target"))]` fixes the long flag.
The short flag cannot be suppressed: `resolve_short_flag` derives one whenever
`cli_short` is unset, and there is no `short = false` spelling in
`parse_cli_meta` (`.../parse/doc_attrs.rs:330-350`, which accepts only `long`,
`short`, `value_name`, and `hide_in_help`). Setting `cli_short = 'd'` would make
the man page *continue* to advertise a rejection, so it is not a fix.
**Blocking notice: upstream dependency.** This half needs a way to declare "no
short flag". The nearest roadmap tracking is
[§12.3, "Separate documenting a type from loading
it"](https://github.com/leynos/ortho-config/blob/v0.10.0/docs/roadmap.md#123-separate-documenting-a-type-from-loading-it)
(`docs/roadmap.md`), whose item 12.3.1 proposes a standalone `OrthoConfigDocs`
derive. Its third bullet is:
> Add a docs-only mode to that pipeline which reads clap's declared argument
> attributes — `long`, `short`, `index`, `value_name`, and the positional
> settings — rather than synthesizing a kebab-cased long flag from the field
> identifier in `resolve_cli_field`, and which never invents the short flag
> that `resolve_short_flag` derives from the field name.
That is the exact capability required, and §12.3.1 is a **roadmap checkbox with
no GitHub issue behind it**. The narrow ask — an opt-out spelling usable under
the current derive, without waiting for that larger derive — is filed as
**[leynos/ortho-config#631](https://github.com/leynos/ortho-config/issues/631)**,
"Derived CLI metadata invents long and short flags with no opt-out, so docs can
advertise flags the binary rejects". It asks for three things: a `cli_short`
opt-out spelling, the same for the long flag, and a diagnostic instead of a
silent discard for unknown `cli(…)` keys.
**Blocking assessment.** This issue splits in two. The long-flag half is
netsuke-fixable now with `cli(long = "default-target")`, which is parsed by both
0.9.0 and 0.10.0. The short-flag half and the missing-`skip_cli`-field half are
**blocked on
[leynos/ortho-config#631](https://github.com/leynos/ortho-config/issues/631)**,
because no spelling exists today that withholds a derived short flag or
documents a `skip_cli` field's CLI form. Until that issue lands, netsuke cannot
make the man page fully accurate without lying in a different direction.
## Why no test caught it
`release_help_cli_value_shapes_match_the_parser`
(`src/cli/release_help/metadata_tests.rs:145`) looks like it should catch the
phantom flags: it pairs each documented field with a parser argument and fails
with "the manual page would advertise a flag this binary rejects". But it
compares only `takes_value`, `value_optional`, and `possible_values` — never
`documentation.long` and never `documentation.short`. The phantom flags are
correct in every attribute it checks and wrong only in the two it does not, so
the test passes.
The omissions are invisible to it for a different reason: it iterates
`metadata.fields` and looks *up* into the parser, so a field the metadata drops
entirely is never examined. A completeness check in the other direction — every
non-help, non-version parser argument appears in the documentation — is needed
for that half.
## Suggested shape
1. Extend the parity test to compare `long` and `short`, and add the reverse
completeness check. Both fail today; that is the red stage.
2. Project CLI metadata for the five `skip_cli` policy fields from the parser.
3. Add `cli(long = "default-target")` for the long spelling; track the short
suppression upstream and leave the short out of the man page when it lands.

Requirement
Assessment
Document --default-target, not --default-targets or -d
Met. The adapter replaces the complete CliMetadata from the parser argument. The explicit regression case requires default-target, TARGET, repetition, and no short flag.
Document the five omitted flags
Met. Reconciliation supplies CLI metadata for color, emoji, progress, accessibility, and no_input, despite their configuration-side skip_cli attributes.
Preserve correct value shapes
Met for the current root arguments. The translator copies value names and possible values. It clears value metadata for presence-only switches.
Preserve configuration sources
Met by inspection. The change leaves environment metadata, file metadata, value types, defaults, and merge strategies intact.
Detect rejected flag spellings
Met. Forward parity now compares both long and short spellings, plus multiplicity, visibility, value names, value acceptance, optionality, and possible values.
Detect omitted or duplicated arguments
Met. Reverse parity requires exactly one CLI metadata entry for every root argument except generated help and version arguments.
The main implementation points are src/cli/release_help/mod.rs, Line 34 and Line 83, and src/cli/release_help/parser_fields.rs, Line 35.
Remove the upstream dependency from this issue’s blocking assessment
The original issue’s upstream-blocking conclusion is too strong.
An attribute override cannot suppress the derived short flag in the described upstream version. This adapter does not need that attribute. It replaces the generated cli member after derivation. The replacement can contain short: None and can supply metadata that skip_cli omitted.
Keep leynos/ortho-config#631 as an upstream improvement, not as a prerequisite for this Netsuke fix. Do not require an additional cli(long = "default-target") annotation here. The parser-based projection already supplies that spelling.
Retain the parser choice and ordering protection
Use configured_command(None) as implemented. The configured command installs the policy parsers that expose the accepted policy values. Reading only Cli::command() would miss that metadata.
Retain the declared-command discovery for parser-only selectors. The existing test pins their order as directory, then config. The new forward parity test also checks their metadata against the configured command.
Separate verified evidence from the remaining renderer check
I verified successful CI check results for Linux, Windows, default features, and release builds. Release logs confirm that the real generation path produced non-empty Linux and Windows manual pages and Windows PowerShell help assets.
I did not run repository code or inspect the generated artefact contents. The existing script snapshots use a fake cargo-orthohelp; do not treat those snapshots as real-renderer regression coverage.
For the final artefact check, verify the generated OPTIONS, ENVIRONMENT, and MAML content against the flag set above. The PR description reports that check as complete, but I have not independently confirmed its contents. This is a verification limit, not a confirmed defect.
Keep #959 separate. This change also corrects the parser-derived placeholders associated with #958, but that does not establish that every requirement of #958 is complete.

@coderabbitai Both pre-merge findings are addressed on the pushed head.
Testing (Unit And Behavioural) — fixed. The release-help script fixture now
renders every documented CLI flag into the generated artefacts instead of only
the parser-only selectors (tests/release_help/mod.rs). tests/release_help_script_tests.rs asserts, against both the generated manual
page and the PowerShell MAML, that the artefact carries --default-target TARGET, --color, --emoji and --progress with POLICY auto|always|never, --accessibility with POLICY auto|on|off, and --no-input. It also asserts that the rejected --default-targets spelling
and a -d/--default-target short alias occur nowhere in either artefact. The
focused suite passes 19/19, including the manual and PowerShell cases, and the
regenerated artefact snapshots record the reconciled flag surface.
Developer Documentation — fixed.docs/netsuke-design.md §8.5 now states
that CliConfig supplies the configuration fields, sources, help keys, value
types and defaults, while configured_command(None) supplies their CLI shape,
with Cli::command() retained for parser-only selectors and subcommands so
their declared order is preserved. It also records the bidirectional parity
tests and the generated-artefact assertions. While there, §8.6's stale cargo-orthohelp 0.9.1 pin was corrected to the workflow-pinned 0.10.0.
Please confirm both rows are resolved and refresh the pre-merge checks for the

@pandalump Treat Testing (Unit And Behavioural) as addressed at head c9b9e70. Both generated-output tests call the shared assertions for the corrected flags, value names, accepted values, and rejected spellings. The fixture now renders all documented CLI metadata.
Keep Developer Documentation open for one remaining item. The §8.5 update correctly records the ownership boundary, and §8.6 now specifies cargo-orthohelp 0.10.0. However, docs/adrs/adr-0016-public-cli-metadata-source-of-truth.md still lacks the dated addendum requested by the saved finding. Add the parser-backed reconciliation and preserved ownership boundaries without rewriting the accepted decision.
Treat the reported 19/19 result as user-supplied evidence; I inspected the tests but did not run them. Several current-head CI jobs were still queued or running during inspection.

Developer Documentation — docs/adrs/adr-0016-public-cli-metadata-source-of-truth.md
now carries a dated addendum (2026-10-31). It records that the accepted
decision is unchanged — ReleaseHelpCli is the sole composition site and CliConfig remains the source of truth for layered configuration fields and
their sources — while the CLI shape of those fields now comes from configured_command(None). It also records why Cli::command() remains the
source for parser-only selectors and subcommands (declared order), and names
the parity tests and generated-artefact assertions that hold the two views
together.

The patch preserves the accepted ADR text. The addendum records the ownership boundaries, parser-backed CLI shapes, declared ordering, parity tests, and generated-artefact assertions.

The release-help projection took every configuration field's CLI shape
from the ortho_config derive. That derive synthesizes a kebab-cased long
flag and a short flag from each Rust field name, and it emits no CLI
metadata for fields marked skip_cli. Netsuke never ran the generated
parser; its handwritten command in src/cli/command.rs is the only parser
users invoke.
The manual page therefore advertised --default-targets and -d, both of
which the binary rejects, and omitted --color, --emoji, --progress,
--accessibility and --no-input, all of which it accepts.
Replace each field's cli member with the shape configured_command(None)
actually parses, while leaving help keys, environment and file sources,
value types and defaults untouched. Value names and possible values now
come from the parser too. Parser-only selectors keep their declared
order, which mut_arg would otherwise disturb.
Add bidirectional parity tests: every documented flag is compared with
the parser, every parser argument must be documented exactly once, and
the policy, selector and value-bearing flags are pinned individually.
Regenerate the metadata snapshot, which records the corrected spellings
and the five previously undocumented policy flags.

Explain that the release-help projection reconciles every configuration
field's CLI metadata from configured_command(None), so the derive's
skip_cli omissions and synthesized flag spellings never reach the manual
page. Record the bidirectional parity tests that hold the contract and
note that value names now come from the parser.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
CodeRabbit review noted that the parity test's doc comment still
described the retired boolean normalization and counted four flags
while listing ten. Rewrite it around the parser-reconciliation contract.
The developers' guide also still pointed at parity_tests.rs, which is
now a module directory, and described documented_flags_match_the_parser
as covering selector flags it does not exercise. Name the two files and
describe the cases that exist.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
The release-help script fixture rendered only the parser-only selectors, so
the generated man page and PowerShell MAML never exercised the configuration
flags that issue #960 reconciled. A projection that dropped `--color`,
`--emoji`, `--progress`, `--accessibility`, `--no-input`, or `--default-target`
would still have satisfied the previous assertions.
Render every documented CLI flag in the fixture, and assert the reconciled
surface in both generated artefacts. The assertions name the value names and
accepted values the parser advertises, and check that neither the rejected
`--default-targets` spelling nor a `-d` short alias reaches the output. Because
they read the generated artefacts rather than the in-process metadata, a
projection that never reaches the help output now fails.
Regenerate the manual and PowerShell snapshots for the reconciled surface.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Section 8.5 still described the CLI shape as coming from `Cli::command()`,
which no longer matches the implementation: the derive synthesizes flag
spellings from Rust field names and omits `skip_cli` fields, so the published
shape has to come from `configured_command(None)`.
Record that split explicitly, keep the declared-command discovery for
parser-only selectors so their order is preserved, and point at the
bidirectional parity tests and the generated-artefact assertions that hold the
two views in agreement.
Also correct the stale `cargo-orthohelp` pin in section 8.6 to 0.10.0, which is
what the release workflow installs.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
The accepted decision still holds: `ReleaseHelpCli` is the sole release-help
composition site, and `CliConfig` remains the source of truth for layered
configuration fields and their sources. Where the CLI shape of those fields
comes from had drifted from the record, because the derive synthesizes flag
spellings from Rust field names and omits `skip_cli` fields.
Add a dated addendum stating that `configured_command(None)` supplies that
shape, that `Cli::command()` stays the source for parser-only selectors and
subcommands so their declared order is preserved, and which tests hold the two
views in agreement.

Address the outstanding review finding by checking the artefacts
cargo-orthohelp actually writes, rather than only the fake generator's
output.
scripts/generate-release-help.sh gains normalise_help_text, which
flattens roff font escapes, escaped hyphens, and value separators so one
set of assertions can read both the man page and the PowerShell MAML
document. verify_rendered_surface then requires every spelling that
issue #960 reconciled with the parser, both policy value sets, and the
absence of the rejected --default-targets spelling. It runs against each
generated manual page and, for Windows targets, against the MAML help, so
release automation exercises it with the pinned cargo-orthohelp 0.10.0.
The fake renderer keeps its script-boundary role and gains an
ORTHOHELP_FAKE_OMIT_FLAG switch, proving end to end that a dropped option
fails generation. The synopsis harness now renders the documented options
too, because the script verifies the whole surface of the document it
receives.
docs/netsuke-design.md 8.5 states the two layers: fake-renderer tests
cover script construction and failure propagation, while the release
helper verifies the real renderer's output.

Summary
The generated manual page described a parser Netsuke does not run. The
release-help projection took every configuration field's CLI shape from the
ortho_configderive, which synthesizes a kebab-cased long flag and a shortflag from each Rust field name and emits no CLI metadata at all for fields

names and possible values now also come from the parser, so placeholders such
as
