Add RFC for shell parsing and verified transformations - #1074
The immediate shell, path, and interpreter fixes need a common follow-up process so that isolated checks do not become permanent, divergent implementations.
RFC 0036, Shell parsing and verified transformations, and its documentation-index entry.
Conditional qualification of brush-parser, independent mvdan/sh comparisons, and a version-matched PowerShell parser oracle.
Shared contracts for insertion admission, contextual encoding, source preservation, path identity, interpreter binding, and transport composition.
Production-connected Kani and Verus requirements, explicit proof domains and external assumptions, positive witnesses, and semantic mutation controls.
Nine follow-up work packages, ADR decisions, a per-fix harmonization register, and explicit programme closure conditions.
The RFC addresses existing marker-derived heredoc delimiters, source mapping through parser normalization, and the difference between PowerShell syntax and native argument serialization.
Delivery contract
The original issues retain their immediate remediation and independent acceptance criteria. This RFC does not substitute for those fixes or add the complete programme to the v0.1.0 release gate.
After this RFC merges, maintainers MUST raise the tracking meta-issue and linked implementation issues, with ADRs as needed. Every ad hoc fix MUST then be harmonized under the shared contracts. Closing the original bug or landing a parser dependency does not discharge that obligation. The RFC PR creates no follow-up issues in advance.

Summary by Sourcery
Establish a mandatory follow-up programme for qualifying shell parsing and verifying the transformations that connect authored recipes to execution.
New Features:
Add RFC 0036 defining a common process for shell parser qualification and verified transformations across command, path, interpreter, and transport boundaries.
Enhancements:
Define shared contracts for insertion admission, contextual encoding, source preservation, path identity, interpreter binding, and transport composition.
Specify independent parser and interpreter comparisons, production-connected Kani checks, Verus proofs, explicit assumptions, positive witnesses, and semantic mutation controls.
Establish nine follow-up work packages, ADR requirements, a harmonization register, and closure criteria for consolidating immediate fixes.
Documentation:
Add RFC 0036 to the documentation index with its scope, migration plan, verification strategy, and mandatory follow-up programme.
This documentation-only PR proposes RFC 0036, which consolidates shell, path, interpreter, and transport safety work around qualified parsers, shared production contracts, and production-linked verification, then defines a mandatory post-merge programme to harmonize existing fixes without replacing their independent remediation criteria.

Add proposed RFC 0036, Shell parsing and verified transformations, and add it to the documentation index. The RFC defines shared contracts for parser-backed shell analysis, insertion admission, contextual encoding, source replacement, path preservation, interpreter binding, and transport composition.
Propose qualifying brush-parser for POSIX and Bash, comparing it with mvdan/sh and supported interpreters, and using Microsoft’s version-matched PowerShell parser as a syntax oracle. Set out production-connected Kani checks, Verus proof requirements, external assumptions, positive witnesses, semantic mutation controls, and closure criteria. The proposal addresses marker-derived heredoc delimiters, source mapping through parser normalization, and the difference between PowerShell syntax and native argument serialization.
Keep immediate defect fixes independent of RFC acceptance and the v0.1.0 release gate. After the RFC merges, create a tracking meta-issue and nine follow-up work packages. Harmonize fixes under the shared contracts and record required ADR decisions. The RFC PR creates no follow-up issues in advance.
The RFC is a proposal; it does not report implementation, runtime-test, or proof-suite results. No new execplan is included.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "Add RFC for shell parsing and verified transformations" matches the main change: the PR adds RFC 0036 on shell parsing and verified transformations, plus its documentation-index entry. The title does not reference a roadmap item or issue number, and none is required by the configured rules because the PR is not an execplan or a direct issue fix. It is a documentation-only change, so the title fits the changeset.
Full details: Testing (Overall)
Explanation
The pull request changes only docs/contents.md and adds the proposed RFC; it changes no executable code or existing behaviour. RFC 0036 says its machinery does not yet exist and that it claims no new runtime reproduction or fix (RFC, lines 6–42 and 49). Its test and proof requirements apply to follow-up implementation work, and its closure criteria require that evidence (lines 471–514 and 559–581). No new behaviour is introduced that requires tests in this pull request.
Full details: User-Facing Documentation
Explanation
PASS. Treat this as a proposal, not a user-facing behaviour change. The PR changes only docs/contents.md and adds RFC 0036. The RFC is marked “Proposed”, addresses maintainers, and says the proposed machinery does not yet exist (docs/rfcs/rfc-0036-shell-parsing-and-verified-transformations.md:5-13, 39-42). It keeps immediate fixes independent of the proposal (:27-30). The RFC also requires user and migration documentation for future intentional behaviour changes (:446-453). No users’ guide or migration update is required for this PR.
Full details: Developer Documentation
Explanation
PASS. Keep the developer guide unchanged for this PR. The diff adds only RFC 0036 and its index entry; it changes no APIs, implementation boundaries, or build requirements. The proposed architecture and contracts are recorded in the RFC, which is marked Proposed (RFC 0036, lines 1–16). It assigns concrete parser and proof-policy choices to follow-up ADRs and requires the formal-verification and developer guides to be updated before new proof gates become mandatory (RFC 0036, lines 70–98). The current guide's optional, proof-kernel-only Verus policy therefore describes the current state, not a conflicting implemented change (docs/developers-guide.md, lines 5493–5501). The diff adds no execplan or roadmap changes.
Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes only docs/contents.md and adds docs/rfcs/rfc-0036-shell-parsing-and-verified-transformations.md. It does not change executable behaviour or a system-level workflow, so this change does not require unit, behavioural, or end-to-end tests. The RFC describes tests for future implementation work.
Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)
Explanation
The pull request adds documentation only. RFC 0036 explicitly requires Proptest coverage and boundary-focused input combinations (lines 332–345), bounded Kani checks over production kernels and state combinations (lines 347–365), and production-linked Verus proofs for preservation and composition obligations (lines 389–419). It also requires positive witnesses and semantic negative controls (lines 425–437). The proposed invariants therefore receive property-test and proof recommendations; the pull request does not add an implementation invariant without such guidance.
Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes only docs/contents.md and adds docs/rfcs/rfc-0036-shell-parsing-and-verified-transformations.md. It introduces no Rust or TypeScript compile-time behaviour and changes no text-generation or UI output. No trybuild-equivalent or snapshot test is required for these documentation changes.
Full details: Unit Architecture
Explanation
PASS: Keep the proposed boundaries. The PR changes only docs/contents.md and adds RFC 0036; it changes no implementation units. The RFC makes representations and responsibilities explicit: it separates paths, argument lists, shell fragments, scripts, and Ninja values (RFC lines 155–159); defines distinct admission, encoding, and source-replacement contracts (lines 274–300); and requires explicit transport contracts and error handling (lines 309–326). It also identifies external assumptions and requires failures or unavailable evidence to remain visible (lines 221–232, 414–419). No stated architecture failure condition is introduced.
Full details: Domain Architecture
Explanation
The RFC supports the required separation. It defines distinct contracts for parsing, insertion admission, contextual encoding, path representation, interpreter binding, and transport (RFC 0036, lines 133–146). It assigns syntax and source-provenance work to parser adapters while keeping admission in a shared function (lines 177–189, 262–284). It also keeps shell quoting separate from Ninja escaping and states that role names do not define new public Rust APIs (lines 133–134, 311–320). The pull request changes only the documentation index and adds this proposal; it introduces no domain or adapter implementation that violates the check.
Full details: Observability
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only docs/contents.md and adds a proposed RFC. The RFC states that it does not claim the proposed machinery already exists. It introduces no production operational behaviour, so this check does not require new logs, metrics, traces, or alerts. The RFC does specify future diagnostic requirements, including dialect, failure category, and available source location, while limiting recipe or binding contents in diagnostics.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The pull request description is directly related to the changeset. It explains that the PR adds RFC 0036 on shell parsing and verified transformations, lists the contents of the RFC (parser qualification, shared validation contracts, Kani and Verus verification, nine follow-up work packages), and gives validation results and a delivery contract. The description matches the raw summary and the PR objectives, so the check passes.
Map the parser’s path. Mark each insertion’s place. Keep source spans in view. Bind the shell to its tool. Test the claims with proof. Track each change to closure.

Add RFC 0036 for qualified shell parsing, shared validation contracts,
production-connected Kani checks, and Verus preservation proofs.
Keep the immediate issue fixes independent. Require their subsequent
harmonization through a post-merge tracking meta-issue, implementation
issues, ADRs, and explicit evidence and closure conditions.
Add the RFC to the documentation index.

Why
The immediate shell, path, and interpreter fixes need a common follow-up process so that isolated checks do not become permanent, divergent implementations.
Follow-up to #998, #984, #990, #980, and #1017; the RFC also names #967, #971, and #1029 as related inventory seeds.
