Plan: Record CI test-speed evidence and adoption gates (#894) - #918
This branch adds the Phase 1 measurement protocol and an offline collector for saved CI attempt and job evidence. It keeps unknown measurements explicit and separates source-varying cohorts; it enables no optimization.
This PR completes EP-1 only. The retained 22 attempts and 86 job records are observational, not a controlled current baseline. Workflow telemetry, comparable ordinary-run controls, and candidate decisions remain deferred. Issue #894 remains open for those later phases.
Review walkthrough
Start with the living investigation plan for the predeclared cohorts, improvement threshold, cost envelope, and adoption gates.
On 25 October, the 39-commit branch was rebased from 0a7a0d58dbc4930d12c9ae4ed1c52e7fff039458 onto main at 88f20d588f936b810a2f700a76ceda970451ca7f, without conflicts. git range-diff matched all 39 commits. The target's ADR-0059 and
compile-contract guidance were preserved; Cargo.lock came from the target.
The complete post-rebase local gates passed on code candidate 8705f25879e47293b1175147d9decb8dcb4decb5: make check-fmt, make test, make typecheck, make lint, make doc-coverage, and make test-workflow-contracts. Nextest passed 4,710 tests with six skipped;
workspace doctests passed. Workflow contracts passed 1,493 tests with three
skipped plus 27 script tests. Doc coverage was 98.20% (6,221/6,335).
The published head a4315d26c4a3ce1ad6ae3531a70bece227214426 differs from
that code candidate only in docs/ci-performance/README.md and the ExecPlan.
This documentation-only update passed make fmt, make check-fmt, make markdownlint (zero issues across 201 files), and make nixie.
Exact-head Actions runs CI 40185149633, Netsukefile 40185149568,
and Release Dry Run 40185149614
all passed on attempt 1 for 5c49f5d726ea6c940f5ecf9b2c2508aeac5f88ef.
The release dry run skipped its expected windows-native-recipe-smoke and publish-release jobs. CodeScene passed on that head (result 8117285).
Current head 189b22560816b40b352c7812938f0db44f1c12e2 adds a plan-only
ExecPlan validation update after checkpoint 5c49f5d. It passed make fmt, make check-fmt, make markdownlint (zero issues across 201 files), and make nixie. Exact-head CI run 40187955829, Netsukefile 40187955914,
and Release Dry Run 40187955898
passed on attempt 1. CodeScene check 121152652157 passed (result 8117621).
The release dry run skipped its expected windows-native-recipe-smoke and publish-release jobs.
The EP-1 completeness and correctness assessment for checkpoint 5c49f5d is
recorded here.
It accepted the scoped milestone and found no confirmed in-scope omission.
This is an implementation assessment, not a formal PR review. Its hosted
coverage result was 91.08% against the 91.7% baseline; the earlier 91.09%
result belongs to a4315d2. Both are within tolerance, and neither exceeds
baseline. The earlier local public-API fixture timeout remains unexplained,
although the fixture and full suite passed in subsequent runs.
The current-head EP-1 assessment is recorded here.
It accepts the scoped milestone and finds no confirmed in-scope omission.
Hosted coverage on this head is 91.07% against the 91.7% baseline, below the
baseline and within tolerance. The assessment notes that full source-to-JSONL
reproduction and a complete dispatch audit were not performed; it is not a
formal review or approval. The earlier local fixture timeout remains
unexplained.
PR #918 is open and ready against main at 0a28fee383061c76aebe94cb38236c6cfa597f35. Its published head is ec53ee08a8c5e9ec45e1957572d1282c4a6a6165; this head updates the ExecPlan
publication and review status after the code repair at 8a329120.
The code repair passed the sequential local gates: make check-fmt, make test (4,725 passed, 7 skipped, doctests passed), make typecheck, make lint, make doc-coverage (98.19%), make test-workflow-contracts (1,508
passed, 3 skipped, plus 27 supplementary script tests), make markdownlint
(203 files, zero issues), and make nixie. The plan-only head ec53ee08
passed make fmt, make check-fmt, make markdownlint (203 files, zero
issues), and make nixie.
Exact-head hosted validation is complete: CI 40359406601,
Netsukefile 40359406569,
and Release Dry Run 40359406819
passed on attempt 1. Release Dry Run skipped its expected windows-native-recipe-smoke and publish-release jobs. CodeScene 8136989 and Gecko
passed.
CodeRabbit's current status is Review paused; its last completed review
covers an earlier head. Its focused reply confirmed the Testing and Unit
Architecture rows on 8a329120 and requested the plan status correction now
recorded on ec53ee08. CodeRabbit's focused reply 6422191320
confirms the Developer Documentation row is addressed on this candidate. The candidate-bound EP-1 assessment 6422329668
accepts the scoped offline collector and reports no confirmed in-scope
defect. It keeps the controlled baseline and EP-2 through EP-4 deferred; the
90.89% hosted coverage result remains below the 91.7% baseline, so no speedup
is claimed. The assessment's local gate results are author-reported, and all
historical raw inputs are not reproduced. Independent inspection of the pinned generate-coverage action
and its run_rust.py
confirms the documented cargo llvm-cov nextest path. Workflow-contract tests
exercise saved-file CLI input through JSONL output with fixtures. A fresh
managed formal review, final approval, and merge remain outstanding.
The local suite results cover the code candidate before this plan-only update;
the updated plan has the documentation checks listed above. Hosted checks and
review evidence have been read against ec53ee08.
Scope and limitations
No workflow, runner, test selection, timeout, Rust harness, or coverage behaviour changed in this PR. No optimization was enabled, and no CI runs were dispatched solely for benchmarking. The retained data adds approximately 11 MiB before Git compression; storage billing is unavailable. Runner-seconds remain a cost proxy, not verified invoice savings. Ordinary required CI triggered by the branch push is validation, not benchmark work.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. 1 included review remains after this review. Your included PR review attempts over the past 7 days set your current allowance at 2 reviews per hour.
Summary
Document the evidence protocol and investigation for issue #894. Use the living ExecPlan for cohort rules, cost accounting, comparison methods and adoption gates. Record the local timeout investigation in the diagnostic plan.
Add an offline collector and parsers for saved workflow runs, jobs, logs and optional telemetry. Validate attempt and job identities. Keep missing or invalid measurements unknown. Classify Dependabot runs only when saved pull-request metadata matches the run association. Report runner-seconds as a cost proxy, not as invoice savings. Add workflow-contract tests for collection, parsing, validation and accounting.
Record 81 jobs across 21 attempts in the original observation set. The 15 October supplement adds five jobs from one attempt, for 86 records across 22 attempts. Treat these observations as evidence, not as a controlled baseline or candidate comparison. Defer candidates A, B and C. Enable no optimization and claim no performance gain or invoice savings.
The latest documented local gates and exact-head hosted checks passed. Hosted code coverage was reported at 90.89% against a 91.7% baseline. These results do not establish a speedup or invoice savings. The controlled baseline, bounded telemetry and candidate decisions remain deferred. A fresh formal review, final approval and merge remain outstanding.
Walkthrough
Adds an offline collector for saved CI run data, with validation and parsers for job, log, and telemetry evidence. Adds tests and documentation for retained observations, analysis rules, and candidate evaluation gates. Also records local investigations into repeated gate timeouts; their causes remain unexplained.

Full details: Testing (Overall)
Explanation
PASS. The PR adds substantive tests for the new collector and parsers. ci_test_evidence_test.py covers duration handling, attempt scoping, cohort assignment, cost accounting, provenance, CLI output, and malformed identities (tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_test.py:16-375). The log tests assert observed values, rejection of forged or malformed records, cache classification, Nextest retries, doctest attribution, runner-image scoping, and secret removal (tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_logs_test.py:9-390; tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_log_limits_test.py:7-86). Nextest, cohort, inventory, validation, file-error, step, and PR-metadata tests cover their distinct behaviours with explicit expected results and exception assertions. Hypothesis tests exercise generated retries, run scoping, doctest batches, cache states, allow-listed telemetry, and invalid measurements (tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_properties_test.py:40-334). The CLI tests verify multiple variants, multiple cohorts, fixed schema fields, compact JSONL, and raw-log exclusion rather than only checking that output exists (tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_output_test.py:80-142). No vacuous or over-mocked test pattern is evident.
Full details: User-Facing Documentation
Explanation
PASS — Do not add this change to docs/users-guide.md. The pull request adds an internal, offline CI-evidence collector and measurement records; it does not change Netsuke’s end-user CLI, manifest format, or application behaviour. The developer guide documents the collector for contributors at docs/developers-guide.md:10-40, and the protocol documents its CLI at docs/ci-performance/README.md:43-64. The collector is explicitly private to this workflow and must not be imported by application code (docs/developers-guide.md:14-18).
Full details: Developer Documentation
Explanation
Pass. Document the new offline collector in docs/developers-guide.md: it defines the collector boundary, private helper ownership, filesystem error behaviour, validation rules, unknown-value handling, cost-proxy limits, and adoption gate at lines 10–40. Link the protocol and living ExecPlan from docs/contents.md at lines 356–359. Keep the new ExecPlan current: it records EP-1 completion, outstanding controlled-baseline and adoption work, and the pending formal review at docs/execplans/ci-test-speedups-investigation.md:621–776. The protocol also records the CLI usage, schema boundary, provenance rules, evidence limits, and deferred decisions at docs/ci-performance/README.md:43–72, 118–160, and 187–206. No documentation failure condition is introduced.
Full details: Module-Level Documentation
Explanation
All changed Python modules have module-level docstrings. The collector docstring is at scripts/ci_test_evidence.py:6. The helper modules document their roles and relationships to the offline collector, for example scripts/ci_test_evidence_logs.py:1-5 and scripts/ci_test_evidence_nextest.py:1-15. The workflow-contract modules and conftest.py also document their test purpose and shared-fixture role. No module-level documentation failure is introduced.
Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)
Explanation
Pass this check. Add meaningful unit coverage for timestamp rules, malformed inputs, collector validation, parser boundaries, cohort provenance, telemetry allow-lists, and cost invariants. Cover generated invariants with Hypothesis in tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_properties_test.py:40-334. Exercise the functional CLI boundary with saved JSON inputs, log directories, argument parsing, JSONL output, schema snapshots, variants, and pull-request metadata in tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_test.py:275-305, tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_output_test.py:125-142, and tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_pr_metadata_test.py:14-64. Cover error paths at both collection and CLI boundaries in tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_validation_test.py:13-77. The workflow-contract target includes these tests through Makefile:280-285. No explicit unit or behavioural testing failure condition is introduced.
Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)
Explanation
Accept the check. The PR adds substantive Hypothesis properties in tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_properties_test.py for latest-run scoping, closed-run transitions, retry ordering, doctest aggregation, cache classification, allow-listed inventory copying, and invalid measurement rejection. ci_test_evidence_test.py also generates ordered timestamp cases for duration_seconds. The remaining finite parser and cohort cases use focused parameterized tests. No proof lemma or formal proof assumption is introduced.
Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)
Explanation
The timestamp snapshot issue is addressed. tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_steps_test.py:28-35 asserts started_at, completed_at, and the 2.5-second duration directly. Lines 37-43 remove those variable fields before comparing the snapshot. tests/workflow_contracts/snapshots/ci_test_evidence_steps.json:2-6 contains only stable semantic fields: step number, normalized outcome, and phase. Invalid and reversed timestamp cases remain covered at lines 48-110. Prior failure addressed: The step test now excludes started_at, completed_at, and seconds from the snapshot and checks them separately. The snapshot contains only stable normalized fields.
Full details: Unit Architecture
Explanation
Pass the Unit Architecture check. Keep the collector boundary as implemented: parse_log, cohort classification, duration calculation, and validation accept data and return data without I/O, clocks, network calls, or global mutation (scripts/ci_test_evidence.py:66-268; scripts/ci_test_evidence_logs.py:281-303). Keep filesystem reads isolated in the named read_logs, read_inventories, and load_inventory adapters. They omit only absent optional files and propagate other filesystem failures (scripts/ci_test_evidence_files.py:15-76; scripts/ci_test_evidence_telemetry.py:26-59), with permission propagation covered by tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_files_test.py:27-74. Keep mutation and publication visible through apply_inventory's in-place API and the CLI's explicit JSONL writer (scripts/ci_test_evidence_telemetry.py:186-211; scripts/ci_test_evidence.py:329-369).
Full details: Domain Architecture
Explanation
PASS — Keep the CI evidence collector at its adapter boundary. The pull request changes only scripts/ci_test_evidence*.py, documentation, and workflow-contract tests; it changes no Rust application or workflow code. main owns saved-file and CLI access, ci_test_evidence_files.py owns filesystem reads, and parse_log accepts log text without filesystem access. The developer guide explicitly forbids application and workflow imports of these private helpers and keeps application identity policies in domain modules (docs/developers-guide.md:10-40). Repository search found no non-test application consumer of the collector modules. No domain-boundary failure is introduced.
Full details: Observability
Explanation
PASS — The pull request adds an offline evidence collector, not production or workflow execution behaviour. The diff changes only documentation, collector scripts, and contract tests; it does not change workflow files. The protocol states that the collector reads saved local files without contacting services, and the developer guide states that it does not dispatch CI or change any gate (docs/ci-performance/README.md:43-60; docs/developers-guide.md:10-20). The collector emits structured evidence and validates failure boundaries, while raw logs, credentials, and raw errors remain excluded (docs/ci-performance/README.md:67-72). No new production metrics, tracing, alerts, or operational logging is required by this change.

This documentation-and-evidence PR establishes an offline CI test-speed investigation protocol, publishes 22 observational attempts covering 86 job records with provenance and limitations, and records bounded local timeout diagnostics; it intentionally makes no workflow, test, runner, timeout, coverage, or optimization changes, leaving baseline collection and candidate adoption for later work.

Add a documented, offline-only protocol for collecting, classifying, comparing, and eventually adopting CI test-speed optimizations.
Define whole-job elapsed time and runner-seconds cost proxy as primary endpoints.
Establish a reproducible, provenance-rich current CI baseline that measures whole-job time, cost proxies, phase attribution, test selection, cache state, and resource use.
❌
The PR records ordinary-run observations and documents the evidence protocol, but explicitly states that the observations are source-varying rather than a controlled baseline. Important evidence remains missing, including distinct coverage merge/export timings, profile inventory, matched cache conditions, complete skipped-test identities, process RSS, and CPU usage.
Evaluate the proposed installation-cache, public-API preparation, and coverage-processing candidates independently through controlled, fidelity-preserving experiments within the existing CI cost envelope.
❌
Candidates A, B, and C are explicitly deferred. The PR makes no candidate changes and presents no controlled candidate-versus-control experiments or results.
Publish evidence-based adoption decisions while preserving CI cost, test and coverage fidelity, and existing infrastructure constraints; leave unsupported optimizations disabled.
❌
The PR preserves the existing workflow and leaves all optimizations disabled, and it documents adoption gates. However, the required per-candidate evidence-based decisions and subsequent follow-through are still outstanding, so this objective is not complete.

Finding
Focused reconciliation
Testing (Overall) — Error
Addressed.ci_test_evidence_logs_test.py now asserts native action pins, multiple revisions, and rejection of mutable refs, mismatched SHAs, Git dependencies, and non-native records. ci_test_evidence_log_metadata_test.py asserts all six tool versions, malformed versions, coverage flags, separate doctest selection, negative commands, and disk measurements at the parse_log boundary.
Testing (Property / Proof) — Warning
Addressed.ci_test_evidence_properties_test.py adds four Hypothesis properties for Nextest latest-run scoping, doctest target batches across command boundaries, exact/fallback/miss cache classification, and telemetry allow-list/privacy. Retained example tests cover post-summary isolation, retry identity retention, and invalid numeric measurements. The workflow-contract target includes these tests and installs Hypothesis.
Linked Issues check — Warning
Retain as issue-level follow-up. The documentation explicitly labels the observations as uncontrolled, keeps candidates A, B, and C deferred, and enables no optimization. Require the comparable baseline, control dispersion, and later candidate decisions before treating #894 as complete—not before accepting this scoped Phase 1 collector work.
No remaining parser or test defect emerged from this focused inspection. The README also now separates schema 2 output from the retained schema 1 files. The users’ guide does not require an update for this internal collector.
Keep the issue-lifecycle caveat explicit: the PR still contains Closes #894. That marker conflicts with keeping the issue continuously open. If retaining the requested marker, carry out the stated reopening step immediately after merge. Do not treat that step as completed now; #894 is currently open.
Keep hosted validation separate.Run 39911076841 targets the requested head and remains in_progress. Wait for its required checks before merging. I inspected the source; I did not rerun tests or independently reproduce the reported local totals.
Treat this reply as a focused reconciliation only. It does not refresh the walkthrough, submit approval, or establish a whole-PR review of the current head.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
@coderabbitai please assess the implementation in this PR for completeness and correctness against EP-1 of the ExecPlan:
docs/execplans/ci-test-speedups-investigation.md
Published head: 99522c5; comparison base: 8a96100.
Acceptance evidence: make check-fmt, make test, make typecheck and make lint passed on the rebased implementation head; the documentation-only follow-up passed make fmt, make check-fmt and make markdownlint. Current-head ordinary CI runs 39933933177, 39933933086 and 39933933276 all passed, and CodeScene result 8094231 passed.
Known limitations: this PR implements EP-1 only. Its 22 retained run attempts and 86 job records are observational, not a controlled current baseline. EP-2 and later candidate work remain pending; no optimization is enabled. The issue is not complete and will be reopened immediately after merge because the PR body retains the requested Closes #894 marker. No proofs or proof obligations changed, so proof-specific scrutiny is not applicable.

Treat this implementation as a substantially complete EP-1 offline collector milestone, not as completion of the baseline objective. I found two remaining documentation or evidence-quality gaps. I found no confirmed runtime correctness defect in the current collector during static inspection.
Keep the controlled baseline requirement open. The ExecPlan explicitly leaves that requirement incomplete at Line 396. The retained observations do not satisfy it. This does not establish a defect in the scoped collector implementation or require EP-2 and candidate work in this PR.
Remaining EP-1 gaps
1. Add current-source revalidation to the ExecPlan
The “Revalidated starting state” section describes the historical revision c65ad9709d1d7cc46c094d88b2eecd1deea8f4c8. Its timeout values are not the assessed head’s values.
Limit
Historical description

Cargo watchdog
1,800 seconds
1,980 seconds
Nextest global timeout

Maximum per-test allowance

900 seconds
See docs/execplans/ci-test-speedups-investigation.md, Line 81; .github/workflows/ci.yml, Line 65; and .config/nextest.toml, Line 192.
The historical section is explicitly revision-scoped, so its values are not false historical statements. However, the rebase note does not supply the current configuration comparison required by EP-1’s “Inspect current source” instruction.
Preserve the historical section. Add a revision-scoped current-state comparison. Identify these configuration differences as further reasons not to treat the retained observations as current controls. Do not change workflow limits to match the historical description.
2. Document one duplicate identity in the retained schema 1 evidence
At docs/ci-performance/observations.jsonl, Line 73, job 114633818860 contains two records for:
Both records report fail and 0.027 seconds. Their timestamps differ. That job contains 2,922 records but 2,921 unique identities.
The record correctly marks both inventory-completeness flags as false. It also leaves the executed summary count unknown. Therefore, this duplicate does not create a false completeness claim or invalidate the published attempt-cost totals.
The current parser retains one record per identity, so this is a retained-data caveat, not evidence that the current parser still duplicates identities.
Document this legacy-record exception. Count unique identities rather than array entries when analysing that job. If correcting the retained record, verify the correction against its source log and record the provenance. Do not silently reinterpret the two entries as retries.
Implementation checks
EP-1 area
Inspection result
Offline-only scope
The diff changes no workflows, runner configuration, Rust harness, or test-selection configuration. Collector code reads local files and contains no network calls.
Example and Hypothesis tests cover metadata extraction, Nextest run scoping, retries, doctest boundaries, cache classification, and telemetry allowlists.
Telemetry reader
File reads enforce the 10 MiB bound. Validation checks schema and run/attempt/job identity. Measurement extraction excludes invalid numeric values and private fields.
Coverage source trace
The pinned shared action and Rust command builder support the documented instrumented Nextest command and separate uninstrumented doctest pass. No separate retained merge/export duration is established.
Independent data-only checks confirmed:
86 distinct jobs across 22 attempts.
Original dataset totals of 55,606 runner-seconds, including 27,499 Ubicloud runner-seconds.
Supplement totals of 4,230 runner-seconds, including 2,156 Ubicloud runner-seconds.
Consistent repeated attempt totals within each retained attempt.
Validation and inspection limits
GitHub confirms that runs 39933933177, 39933933086, and 39933933276 completed successfully on the assessed head. CodeScene result 8094231 also reports success. The Linux job reports successful workflow-contract, format, lint, typecheck, documentation-coverage, and coverage steps.
I did not execute repository code or rerun tests. The sandbox instructions prohibit that execution. I inspected the implementations and contracts and used an independent script to inspect JSONL data.
I did not obtain the original saved API responses or raw logs used to produce all retained records. Therefore, source-to-JSONL reproduction remains unverified. The initial shared-action lookup used an incorrect path; the corrected lookup succeeded.
Keep #894 open for comparable controls and later acceptance work. Carry out the stated reopening step after merge if the requested closing marker remains. This assessment neither starts a formal review nor changes approval or thread status.
Reject evidence-map entries without an exact job ID and malformed job
containers before collection. Record every requested key from cache misses.
Add regressions for map identities, job shapes, multi-key cache misses, and
coverage percentage bounds.
Split steps and labels shape checks into private validators to keep
per-function complexity within the CodeScene gate while preserving
existing defaults and errors.
Document the helpers' module-local scope and record the revalidation
evidence in the ExecPlan.
Acceptance evidence: make check-fmt, make test (4,725 passed, seven skipped; doctests passed), make typecheck, make lint, make test-workflow-contracts (1,519 passed, three skipped, plus 27 trusted-script tests), make doc-coverage (98.19%, 6,231/6,346), make markdownlint (203 files, zero issues), and make nixie all passed on the published candidate. Exact-head CI run 40409547305, Netsukefile run 40409547280, Release Dry Run 40409547388 (nine jobs passed; release-publish and Windows native smoke were skipped as designed), and CodeScene 8140500 passed.
Known limitations: the retained CI observations remain observational and do not establish a controlled baseline or justify adopting test optimizations. No optimization is enabled by this PR. Proof inventory: not applicable; this follow-up changes no proof files, propositions, or verifier obligations.
The prior EP-1 request 6422191320 and substantive response 6422329668 assessed head ec53ee08a8c5e9ec45e1957572d1282c4a6a6165. This follow-up asks whether that assessment still holds for the published candidate.

Assessment
Retain the prior acceptance of the scoped EP-1 offline evidence-collection implementation. The candidate changes preserve that conclusion. Static inspection found no remaining confirmed implementation defect or omission within that scope.
Do not mark the entire baseline milestone complete. The plan still requires comparable ordinary-run controls and missing phase and inventory evidence. Keep EP-2 through EP-4 deferred. GitHub confirms that #894 remains open.
Implementation evidence
I inspected the collector, validation, cache parser, cohort logic, inventory extraction, optional-file readers, and focused regression tests. I also compared this candidate with previously assessed head ec53ee08a8c5e9ec45e1957572d1282c4a6a6165.
Area
Assessment
Evidence binding
collect_attempt now validates evidence-map keys against exact job IDs from the complete response. Tests reject unknown IDs and zero-prefixed aliases for both logs and inventories.
Job response validation
Validation rejects malformed steps and labels containers before extraction. The private helper split preserves these checks and documents their ownership boundary.
Cache misses
_record_miss now retains every key in a native miss list. The regression covers a requested key after the first entry. Exact and fallback restore precedence remains unchanged.
Measurement boundaries
New tests assert acceptance at 100% coverage and rejection above 100%. Missing evidence and incomplete duration totals remain unknown.
Optional files
Readers suppress only FileNotFoundError. Other filesystem failures propagate. Inventory measurements remain bound to run, attempt, and job identities.
Step output
The snapshot uses literal timestamps and deterministically checks preserved values and a 2.5-second duration. Separate cases cover malformed, reversed, and timezone-naive inputs. No timestamp-redaction change is required for determinism.
Execution scope
The base-to-head comparison changes no workflows, runner configuration, or Rust harness. No optimization is enabled.
Documentation status
Keep one minor status caveat visible. The final revision-history paragraph still says that the follow-up needs publication and hosted checks. Those actions are now complete for this head.
Treat that sentence as a pre-publication checkpoint, not as the current validation status. Clarify its checkpoint scope during the next substantive plan update. Do not create another plan-only commit solely to copy this assessment. This wording does not invalidate the implementation assessment.
Release Dry Run 40409547388: nine jobs passed; Windows native recipe smoke and publishing were skipped.
CodeScene result 8140500 and Gecko Security Review: passed.
The inspected Linux log confirms:
4,725 Nextest passes, seven skips.
Passing workspace doctest sections.
1,519 workflow-contract passes, three skips.
27 trusted-script passes.
Keep 90.89% hosted code coverage separate from the reported 98.19% Rustdoc coverage. Hosted code coverage remains below the 91.7% baseline, despite the successful check.
Limits and remaining work
Treat local gate results as author-reported. I did not execute repository code or rerun gates.
Keep full source-to-JSONL reproduction unverified. I did not reproduce the retained dataset from all original API responses and raw logs.
Treat unchanged parser areas as covered by the supplied prior assessment and the inspected comparison, not as a fresh exhaustive review.
Keep the pinned shared-action trace as documented evidence. I did not independently refetch that external source.
Preserve the historical timeout’s unknown cause.
Require controlled comparisons and cost/fidelity evidence before candidate adoption. Do not infer performance gains or invoice savings from these observations.
No access failure blocked this inspection. No separate proof assessment applies.
Keep this assessment separate from formal review and approval. This reply starts no formal review and changes no approval or thread status.

Disposition and evidence:
Testing (Compile-Time / Ui): invalid as a nondeterminism or correctness
concern. The test supplies literal started_at and completed_at values
at tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_steps_test.py:20-21; it does
not read the clock or generate runtime timestamps. The snapshot assertion at
lines 25-30 deliberately checks serialization of those values and the 2.5-
second duration. The parameterized cases at lines 33-95 cover malformed,
reversed, and timezone-naive inputs. Removing the timestamp fields from the
snapshot would remove the direct assertion that valid values are preserved.
The candidate-bound EP-1 assessment response 6428936820
confirmed that the timestamps are literal inputs and no redaction change is
needed. The only source change in repair commit 40f4ef4 is the job-container
validation style; the step serializer, fixture, and snapshot are unchanged.
The title warning is now resolved: the PR title has the requested Plan:
prefix, and the latest walkthrough marks Title check passed.
Please confirm that the timestamp warning can be closed. If it remains valid,
identify a concrete failure or maintenance scenario and provide an AI coding
agent prompt for the necessary change. This is a focused reconciliation, not a
request for a fresh whole-PR review. Keep the separately planned baseline and
candidate-evaluation work outside this PR's scope.
Keep the schema snapshot focused on stable step fields and assert timestamps
and elapsed duration directly. This addresses the review concern while
preserving coverage of serialized timing data.
I addressed the Testing (Compile-Time / Ui) warning in your pre-merge walkthrough (comment) in published commit 2af031151bc11c623e75827963858ad8f43ad951 on base 0a28fee383061c76aebe94cb38236c6cfa597f35.
The step schema snapshot now contains only stable fields. The test separately asserts serialized started_at, completed_at, and elapsed seconds; existing invalid-time cases and the raw-log marker assertion remain. Changes are limited to tests/workflow_contracts/ci_test_evidence_steps_test.py, its snapshot, and the ExecPlan gate record.
All eight sequential local gates passed on this candidate: make check-fmt, make test (4,725 passed, 7 skipped, doctests passed), make typecheck, make lint, make doc-coverage (98.19%), make test-workflow-contracts (1,519 passed, 3 skipped, plus 27 auxiliary tests), make markdownlint (203 files, zero issues), and make nixie.
Please confirm whether this resolves the specific warning; if not, identify what remains.
@pandalump Treat the Testing (Compile-Time / Ui) warning as resolved for 2af031151bc11c623e75827963858ad8f43ad951. No further change is required for this warning.
Exact-head inspection confirms:
The step snapshot contains only number, outcome, and phase.
Separate assertions preserve serialized started_at and completed_at and check seconds against pytest.approx(2.5).
The malformed, reversed, and timezone-naive timestamp cases remain.
The schema-2 snapshot and raw-log marker assertion remain.
The change satisfies the requested snapshot projection without removing semantic coverage.
Also correct the original finding’s premise: the timestamps were literal fixture inputs, not runtime-generated values. They did not establish nondeterminism. Withdraw that correctness concern rather than describe this change as a fix for a demonstrated flaky test.
Treat the reported local gate results as author-reported. I inspected the source but did not rerun tests or verify hosted checks. Keep this conclusion limited to the timestamp warning; it does not constitute PR approval.

Follow-up on your timestamp-warning disposition at comment 6433548305: does your conclusion that the warning is resolved still apply to current head 0630b654dc15f536d92b3e5f1cd3323557cea14b on base 0a28fee383061c76aebe94cb38236c6cfa597f35?
The only change since 2af031151bc11c623e75827963858ad8f43ad951 is a documentation update to record your disposition and the gate results; the test and snapshot files are unchanged. Please say if that changes your finding-specific conclusion, and identify any remaining issue if it does.

@wafflecat-df12 Retain the Testing (Compile-Time / Ui) warning as resolved at head 0630b654dc15f536d92b3e5f1cd3323557cea14b, on the stated base 0a28fee383061c76aebe94cb38236c6cfa597f35.
GitHub’s comparison confirms that only docs/execplans/ci-test-speedups-investigation.md changed after 2af031151bc11c623e75827963858ad8f43ad951. The test and snapshot are unchanged.
Exact-head inspection confirms:
The snapshot contains only number, outcome, and phase.
Separate assertions check started_at, completed_at, and pytest.approx(2.5).
The documentation records the prior disposition without changing the tested behaviour.
No remaining issue requires a change for this warning. Retain the correction to the original premise: literal fixture timestamps did not establish nondeterminism.
Keep this conclusion limited to the timestamp warning. I did not rerun tests or verify hosted checks. This reply does not submit PR approval or change thread status.

Summary
This branch adds the Phase 1 measurement protocol and an offline collector for saved CI attempt and job evidence. It keeps unknown measurements explicit and separates source-varying cohorts; it enables no optimization.
Part of #894
This PR completes EP-1 only. The retained 22 attempts and 86 job records are observational, not a controlled current baseline. Workflow telemetry, comparable ordinary-run controls, and candidate decisions remain deferred. Issue #894 remains open for those later phases.

ec53ee08.Scope and limitations
No workflow, runner, test selection, timeout, Rust harness, or coverage behaviour changed in this PR. No optimization was enabled, and no CI runs were dispatched solely for benchmarking. The retained data adds approximately 11 MiB before Git compression; storage billing is unavailable. Runner-seconds remain a cost proxy, not verified invoice savings. Ordinary required CI triggered by the branch push is validation, not benchmark work.
