Allow actions to opt into Ninja's console pool for streamed output (22.1.2, 22.2.1) (#946) - #952
Issue #946 adds a default-false console opt-in for manifest actions and targets, carries scheduling on each BuildEdge, and emits an edge-level pool = console binding. Validation rejects dependency-only entries and conflicting custom pools while preserving action identity and shared rules. Ordinary edges clear an inherited rule-level console pool when they have not opted in. Ninja runs console-pool edges one at a time and buffers progress and output from other edges while a console edge runs.
make check-fmt, make doc-coverage, make lint, make markdownlint, make nixie, make spelling, make test, and make typecheck passed on e42967ce5. Documentation coverage was 98.25% (6,464/6,579) against the 80%
threshold; make test reported 5,006 passed, 7 skipped, and 53 doctests
passing.
The branch was rebased onto e5d57c583 (current main). git range-diff
shows every replayed commit with an identical patch; the only dropped
commit is the typos.toml refresh, which is provably empty because main
already carries the same generated file (identical blob). Main's new clap-error-invalid-utf8 locale key is present in all 35 catalogues
alongside the three console-pool keys this branch adds.
make test-documentation-contracts passed earlier in this PR; this change
set adds no documentation examples.

Summary
Add a default-false console option to manifest actions and targets. Store it on BuildEdge so console scheduling does not change action identity or rule sharing.
Emit pool = console on opted-in edges. Clear an inherited console pool on ordinary edges that share the action rule.
Reject console scheduling for dependency-only recipes and when an action requests a custom pool other than console. Accept a redundant Action.pool: console. RFC 0024 documents that console selection cannot be combined with a contention class.
Add localized diagnostics and document the option, its restrictions, Ninja’s serial scheduling and output buffering, and the lack of PTY semantics. See ADR 0061, RFC 0024, and issue #946. Update Rust Target and BuildEdge struct literals for the new field.
Add unit, property, BDD, integration, and real-process tests for manifest validation, Ninja edge generation, streamed output, and console-pool exclusivity. Flush each forwarded output chunk before reading the next.
Add bounded telemetry for configured console-edge counts, bundle generation, Ninja build outcomes, and forwarding failures. Restrict labels to finite values and exclude paths, commands, identifiers, and process error text.
Verification
The PR reports that make check-fmt, make markdownlint, make nixie, make doc-coverage, make lint, make test, and make typecheck passed. It reports 98.25% documentation coverage, 5,006 tests passed, 7 skipped, and 53 doctests passed. These results have not been independently verified.
The PR reports hosted Linux and Windows lint failures during the Dylint 6.0.1 driver build. The release dry run stopped after its macOS arm64 job was cancelled.
Walkthrough
The change adds default-false console scheduling to actions and targets. It carries the setting to build edges, validates unsupported combinations, emits edge-level Ninja console-pool bindings, flushes forwarded output by chunk, and records bounded build and generation telemetry.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the feature (opt-in to Ninja's console pool for streamed output), which matches the main change in the changeset: a console option on actions and targets, edge-level console pool bindings, and validation. It also cites roadmap phases 22.1.2 and 22.2.1, which the roadmap update references, and the issue number #946. The title is specific and on-topic, so the check passes.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description states the purpose of the change: a default-false console opt-in for actions and targets, edge-level pool = console bindings, validation of dependency-only entries and conflicting pools, and console-pool serialisation behaviour. It also lists validation runs, reviewer walkthrough links and related documentation. It is clearly related to the changeset, so the check passes.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Scope: [#946] requires (1) a default-false manifest console opt-in on actions and targets, (2) lowering to edge-level pool = console, (3) validation against RFC 0024 contention-class rules, (4) documentation of serial console-pool scheduling and output buffering, and (5) optional guidance for interactive or long developer gates. The issue states item 5 as 'ideally', so it is not mandatory.
Requirement 1: Target.console in src/ast/target.rs uses #[serde(default)] and defaults to false. Action opt-in tests are in tests/ast_tests/actions.rs and tests/ast_tests/console.rs.
Requirement 2: BuildEdge.console is copied from the target in src/ir/from_manifest/mod.rs. src/ninja_gen/display_edge.rs writes pool = console for selected edges and an empty pool = binding for ordinary edges that share a console-pool action rule. Synthetic gates and dyndep sidecars receive no binding (tests in src/ninja_gen/dyndep/tests/console.rs and src/ninja_gen/property_tests/console.rs).
Requirement 3: validate_console_edge in src/ninja_gen/validation.rs rejects dependency-only recipes and custom action pools other than console. The source defines no contention-class field. Target uses #[serde(deny_unknown_fields)], and tests/ast_tests/console.rs checks that a contention key is rejected as an unknown field. A console edge therefore cannot combine with a contention class in the current manifest surface. The source has no contention-class check, because the contention feature (roadmap step 22.1.2) is not implemented at this head. The rule is recorded in RFC 0024, the roadmap and ADR 0061. This run did not verify that Action also denies unknown fields.
Requirement 4: the users' guide, design document, developers' guide, ADR 0061 and RFC 0024 document serial scheduling, output buffering and the lack of pseudo-terminal semantics.
Requirement 5: the guide-console-target example for lint is tested in tests/documentation_examples_tests.rs.
Tests: BDD scenarios in tests/features/manifest.feature and tests/features/ninja.feature, Ninja console unit tests, property tests, snapshot tests, and Unix runtime tests for streaming and exclusivity (tests/console_pool_runtime_tests.rs).
Limitations: This run did not execute tests. It did not read the ignored-by-policy snapshot file, and no requirement depends on it.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Changes connected to [#946]: the manifest field and validation; IR and edge carriage; Ninja edge emission and generator validation; localized diagnostics for the three new rejections across the locale catalogues, src/localization/keys.rs and the glossary; public struct updates and console: false fixture updates; the documentation set and ADR 0061; BDD, snapshot, property and runtime tests; test_support::ninja_edge helpers; and console-edge counts in dyndep and runner telemetry, which measure the new scheduling.
Changes on the streaming path (src/runner/process/streaming: per-chunk flush, ForwardStream, failure classification, drain tracking) support the requirement that output stream during console-pool execution. They are not demonstrated unrelated.
Broader changes that #946 does not name: forwarding-failure metrics (FORWARD_FAILURES_TOTAL), the recorder filters for them, and the Ninja build execution metrics and telemetry (NINJA_BUILD_EXECUTIONS_TOTAL and related). The PR objectives record that this work was first split into #1048 and later treated as in scope. #1048 is not a linked issue, so it adds no requirement. Reviewers should confirm that this observability work belongs in this PR, because the issue does not request it. This assessment does not treat it as unrelated, because it instruments the same forwarding and console-scheduling paths.
Smaller connections: the relocated shell-syntax test in src/ninja_gen/tests/command_syntax.rs, and the Hindi missing-action message change from build core to build edge. Both are small and do not change console behaviour.
Verdict basis: the whole-PR summary and focused source reads of src/ast/target.rs and src/ninja_gen/validation.rs. No change was demonstrated to be unrelated.
Full details: Testing (Overall)
Explanation
Substantive tests guard the changed behaviour. Manifest tests cover default and explicit console values for actions and targets, dependency-only rejection, and localized diagnostics (tests/ast_tests/console.rs:10-79; tests/ast_tests/dependency_only.rs:229-275; tests/features/manifest.feature:18-24). Generator tests assert exact edge-level pool = console output, shared-rule reuse, inherited-pool clearing, matching action pools, missing-action handling, and both direct and bundle validation (src/ninja_gen/tests/console.rs:30-124; src/ninja_gen/validation.rs:262-365). Property tests cover mixed edge selections, synthetic gates, dyndep sidecars, and console-edge counts (src/ninja_gen/property_tests/console.rs:77-172), with additional dyndep tests (src/ninja_gen/dyndep/tests/console.rs:10-129). Unix runtime tests verify output before recipe completion and exclusive execution with --jobs 2 (tests/console_pool_runtime_tests.rs:234-284; tests/console_pool_runtime_tests/exclusivity.rs:11-62). Telemetry and forwarding changes also have bounded-label, outcome, flush-order, read/write/flush/drain, and result-policy tests (src/runner/console_telemetry/tests.rs:45-122; src/runner/process/streaming/tests/failure_tests.rs:165-376; src/runner/process/streaming/tests/flush_tests.rs:66-137). These tests would fail for ignored console flags, rule-level leakage, missing validation, non-exclusive scheduling, lost streaming output, or incorrect forwarding classification. No explicit testing failure condition is introduced.
Full details: User-Facing Documentation
Explanation
Pass the user-facing documentation check. docs/users-guide.md:608-649 documents the console field for actions and targets, its default and restrictions, a working YAML example, Ninja 1.5+, serial scheduling, throughput impact, output forwarding, pipe/no-PTY behaviour, recipe flushing, and JSON-mode suppression. docs/v0-1-0-migration-guide.md:48-68 signposts the beta5 addition and Rust struct-literal migration, with further console checks and error fixes at lines 666-681. The added localisation entries retain the same three console diagnostic keys and placeables across the supported locales.
Full details: Module-Level Documentation
Explanation
PASS. All modules introduced by this pull request carry module-level //! documentation. The documentation states each module's purpose and utility, including console scheduling, telemetry, forwarding, Ninja edge inspection, and runtime tests. Examples include src/runner/console_telemetry/mod.rs:1-4, src/runner/process/streaming/forward_failure.rs:1-9, test_support/src/ninja_edge.rs:1-5, and the new test modules such as src/ninja_gen/tests/console.rs:1. New module declarations in parent files point to these documented modules. Existing changed parent modules also retain clear purpose and component relationships, such as src/runner/process/streaming/mod.rs:1-5 and src/ir/graph/mod.rs:1-8.
Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)
Explanation
PASS. The pull request adds meaningful unit coverage for console validation and generation errors in src/ninja_gen/validation.rs and src/ninja_gen/tests/console.rs. Property tests verify edge-local bindings, inherited-pool clearing, synthetic gates, dyndep sidecars, and console-edge counts in src/ninja_gen/property_tests/console.rs. BDD, manifest, snapshot, and runner-boundary tests cover the public manifest-to-Ninja workflow. Unix integration tests launch Netsuke and Ninja to verify streamed output before recipe exit and exclusive console scheduling in tests/console_pool_runtime_tests.rs and its exclusivity.rs module. The streaming changes also include focused tests for read, write, flush, drain, interruption, byte accounting, and flush ordering. Test modules are registered, and the evidence shows no missing end-to-end coverage for the externally observable workflow.
Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)
Explanation
The compile-time requirement is met by the repository's established language-specific equivalent: public_api_fixture is a workspace library compiled as an external crate. The new build_edge_console module includes tests/ui/build_edge_console_compile_pass.rs, which constructs both BuildEdge and Target with console: true (public_api_fixture/src/lib.rs:9-10; tests/ui/build_edge_console_compile_pass.rs:3-47). The structured Ninja output has focused snapshot coverage in tests/snapshots/ninja/ninja_snapshot_tests__console_manifest_ninja.snap, and tests/ninja_snapshot_tests.rs:260-305 adds semantic checks for selected and ordinary edges. The snapshot contains stable fixture data and no runtime, timestamp, secret, or environment-dependent values.
Full details: Observability
Explanation
Pass the observability check. Instrument bundle generation and actual Ninja execution with duration, outcome, bounded error categories, console scheduling state, and configured console-edge counts (src/runner/dyndep/generation_telemetry.rs:23-120, src/runner/console_telemetry/mod.rs:28-115). Classify child-output forwarding failures at the read, write, flush, and drain boundaries, and emit fixed-cardinality metrics with meaningful warning fields (src/runner/process/streaming/mod.rs:269-325, src/runner/process/streaming/forward_failure.rs:14-139). Restrict the application recorder to exact finite label vocabularies and test rejected widening attempts (src/observability/recorder/console.rs:11-65, src/observability/recorder/tests/console_tests.rs:11-89, src/observability/recorder/tests/forwarding_tests.rs:95-130). The telemetry omits paths, commands, child output, and process error text from metrics and spans.
Full details: Unit Architecture
Explanation
The standing Unit Architecture failure remains unresolved. The PR changes IrGenError::InvalidManifest in src/ir/graph/error.rs:21-29,64-68 so Display calls invalid_manifest_message, creates a LocalizedMessage, and renders it through LocalizedMessage::to_string(). LocalizedMessage reads the process-global LOCALIZER in src/localization/mod.rs:101-134,250-254. BuildGraph::from_manifest_for_shell still constructs InvalidManifest without an explicit localizer dependency at src/ir/from_manifest/mod.rs:63-69. The added test at tests/ast_tests/dependency_only.rs:247-275 installs a global locale and verifies locale-dependent error formatting, so it confirms the hidden dependency rather than removing it.
Resolution
Remove global locale resolution from IrGenError formatting. Keep InvalidManifest as stable validation data, or store a purpose-shaped LocalizedMessage created at an explicit application boundary. Render the diagnostic in the caller that owns presentation, or pass a localizer explicitly through the relevant boundary. Add a test that creates the error, changes the active locale, and verifies that error formatting does not read the process-global localizer implicitly.
Full details: Developer Documentation
Explanation
Fail: docs/developers-guide.md:7217-7226 documents edge_has_console_pool but does not document the new test_support::ninja_edge::edge_pool_bindings API. The helper is public at test_support/src/ninja_edge.rs:34-60 and property tests call it at src/ninja_gen/property_tests/console.rs:89-114. The current developer-guide diff adds only the Boolean helper, so the previous documentation failure remains unresolved. The console architecture and telemetry boundaries are documented in the developer guide, design document, and ADR.
Resolution
Add edge_pool_bindings to the test_support::ninja_edge section of docs/developers-guide.md. State that it returns the named edge's exact pool = bindings and distinguishes pool = console, an empty pool = clearing binding, and no binding. State that property tests use it for edge-local and synthetic-edge assertions. Keep the existing test-support-only call-site restriction.
Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)
Explanation
The standing failure remains unresolved. The pull request introduces the transition invariant in src/runner/process/streaming/mod.rs:241-267: each non-empty read must be fully written and flushed before the next read. The current test at src/runner/process/streaming/tests/flush_tests.rs:66-95 checks only firstlast, read chunks [5, 4], and a maximum write size of 2. The related failure case at :119-137 is also fixed-input. The only streaming property test at src/runner/process/streaming/tests.rs:316-354 checks status-reader retention and byte forwarding; it does not generate read boundaries, partial-write limits, or flush event order. The changed code therefore lacks property coverage for the meaningful input range required by this invariant.
Resolution
Add a proptest for copy_and_flush or forward_child_output. Generate arbitrary input, valid read-chunk sequences, and partial-write limits. Assert exact output preservation, complete-chunk flushes before every subsequent read, correct read and write counts, and no extra flush after EOF. Keep the existing focused unit tests for event-sequence diagnostics and flush-failure behaviour.
Full details: Domain Architecture
Explanation
FAIL — Keep the domain/adapter boundary. The PR adds Target.console as a direct Ninja concept in src/ast/target.rs:11-13,55-59, rejects dependency-only entries in src/ast/mod.rs:314-320, and copies the flag directly into BuildEdge.console in src/ir/from_manifest/mod.rs:164-176. The core IR publicly documents that field as selecting Ninja's console pool in src/ir/graph/mod.rs:299-303 and src/ir/mod.rs:3-5. The Ninja generator then reads the domain field and emits the vendor-specific pool = console binding in src/ninja_gen/validation.rs:15-53 and src/ninja_gen/display_edge.rs:44-49. The search found no backend-neutral scheduling or output-visibility concept. ADR 0061 explicitly accepts this coupling at lines 37-51. This is the same unresolved boundary failure identified previously.
Resolution
Replace BuildEdge.console with a backend-neutral domain concept such as EdgeScheduling::StreamOutput or EdgeOutputVisibility::Immediate. Translate the manifest option into that concept before storing it in the IR. Keep Ninja pool-name validation, inheritance clearing, pool = console emission, and Ninja-specific telemetry inside the Ninja adapter. Update the AST and IR documentation, ADR, design documents, telemetry, tests, and public fixtures while preserving the current behaviour.

Allow actions to opt into Ninja's console pool for streamed output (22.1.2, 22.2.1) (#946)
Oct 26, 2026
@coderabbitai Have the following pre-merge findings now been resolved for
published HEAD 55947b92710b1852ac8c0af34ba73c9d947a08b5, based on base 0a28fee383061c76aebe94cb38236c6cfa597f35?
The live walkthrough in comment #6399485073 still reports Pre-merge checks: 10 passed, 4 failed, 1 inconclusive. Its four warning rows and inconclusive row are tied to the earlier review of 168476a4f656ca164e46a22c00ccaf30a5f91098.
Relevant rows:
Out of Scope Changes check — Warning
User-Facing Documentation — Warning
Domain Architecture — Warning
Observability — Warning (the explanation says FAIL)
Docstring Coverage — Inconclusive
Dispositions and evidence:
Out of Scope Changes check:assert_shell_command_tolerates_complex_syntax was moved unchanged from src/ninja_gen/tests/mod.rs to src/ninja_gen/tests/command_syntax.rs. The move keeps the test module within the repository's 400-line file limit after adding the console tests; mod.rs is now exactly 400 lines. It adds no product behaviour or new shell-command contract.
User-Facing Documentation:docs/users-guide.md describes selection, serialization, output forwarding limits, and recommended use. docs/v0-1-0-migration-guide.md now records the Target struct-literal source change, the Serde default, the next beta5 migration note, and a link to the guide.
Domain Architecture: The accepted issue plan explicitly requires BuildEdge.console and Ninja edge-level emission. ADR-0060 and the design document record this deliberate scheduling annotation and preserve Action identity. Replacing it with a generic IR concept would broaden the agreed change and discard the requested BuildEdge contract.
Observability: The current candidate adds bounded console scheduling and edge-count metrics plus outcome, error-category, duration, and tracing fields for Ninja builds and dyndep generation. src/runner/console_telemetry/ and src/runner/dyndep/generation_telemetry.rs include tests for labels, counts, outcomes, and durations; the application recorder retains the declared metric series and bounded label sets.
Docstring Coverage: The repository's required make doc-coverage gate passed at 98.20%, above its 80% workspace threshold. That gate runs rustdoc coverage across workspace library and binary targets; CodeRabbit's touched-function estimate (68.87%, with 53 functions skipped) uses a different scope and is not the repository's configured coverage measure.
Validation for this exact source candidate passed sequentially: make check-fmt, make lint, make typecheck, make doc-coverage, make test-documentation-contracts, make test-workflow-contracts, make markdownlint, make nixie, and make test (4,760 passed, 7 skipped; doctests 42 passed, 6 ignored, plus 3 compile-fail tests passed). Hosted CI run 40390449141 passed on this head, and hosted CodeScene passed.
Documentation scope: the manifest option changes user-visible configuration and migration behaviour, documented in the users' and migration guides; the IR and telemetry ownership details are documented in the design and developers' guides.
Please confirm which rows are resolved and provide an AI coding agent prompt for any valid remaining in-scope work. Keep separately planned follow-up actions outside this PR's scope. This is a focused pre-merge reconciliation, not a request for a fresh whole-PR review.
@pandalump Treat all five rows as cleared for the focused pre-merge reconciliation of HEAD 55947b92710b1852ac8c0af34ba73c9d947a08b5 against base 0a28fee383061c76aebe94cb38236c6cfa597f35. No valid remaining in-scope code work was established by these five findings.
Distinguish this assessment from the displayed check results. The walkthrough still identifies 168476a4f656ca164e46a22c00ccaf30a5f91098 as its last reviewed commit. Its 10 passed, 4 failed, 1 inconclusive count does not reflect this reconciliation.
Row dispositions
Row
Disposition
Verified evidence
Out of Scope Changes check
Withdraw the warning.
The base-to-HEAD diff preserves the command string and assertion in assert_shell_command_tolerates_complex_syntax. The change moves the test into src/ninja_gen/tests/command_syntax.rs and adds documentation. src/ninja_gen/tests/mod.rs has exactly 400 lines. This supports the file-size requirement in AGENTS.md; it does not introduce a new shell-command contract.
User-Facing Documentation
Resolved by the current documentation.
docs/users-guide.md documents selection, serialization, recommended use, and output-forwarding limits. docs/v0-1-0-migration-guide.md identifies the next beta5 change, requires console in Rust Target literals, explains the Serde default, and links to the console-pool guidance.
Domain Architecture
Withdraw the redesign request.
Accepted ADR-0060 explicitly selects BuildEdge.console and preserves Action identity. The design document and src/ir/mod.rs now describe that deliberate scheduling annotation. Replacing it with a generic IR concept would change the accepted contract, not repair an established defect.
Observability
Resolved by the current implementation.
Runner telemetry records configured console-edge counts, bounded scheduling state, outcomes, error categories, and duration. The build wrapper covers both progress-enabled and ordinary invocation paths. Dyndep generation records console-specific failure categories. Tests cover metric labels, counts, outcomes, and duration samples. The application recorder admits the six declared metric series and rejects unbounded label variants.
Docstring Coverage
Clear the repository-gate concern; do not report the stale estimator as passed.
AGENTS.md defines the required measure as aggregate Rustdoc coverage across workspace library and binary targets, including private items. The hosted log records 6,291 / 6,406 documented items: 98.20%, above the 80% threshold. The touched-function estimate measures a different scope and does not establish a failure of this gate.
For observability, retain the documented interpretation: the counters measure configured console edges across attempts, not executed edges or measured console-pool occupancy. The implementation satisfies the requested bounded runner telemetry without claiming those additional measurements.
Validation and remaining work
I verified that CI run 40390449141 completed successfully on the exact requested HEAD. I also verified the successful CodeScene check and the hosted Rustdoc coverage result. I inspected source and logs; I did not rerun repository code.
Do not commission a coding-agent patch for these five rows. No corrective prompt is needed because no valid remaining in-scope change was established. Keep separately planned follow-up work outside this PR.
Treat this reply as the reconciliation record, not as an update to the walkthrough counters or provider approval status. This reply does not submit approval or trigger a fresh whole-PR review.

Please review PR #952 at current head 1463ea4ee1aa71f0ab1a8ba303f89ca4c4726e61. The local coderabbit review --agent completed after the required cooldown. Its two minor findings were checked: src/localization/keys.rs is exactly 400 lines, and locales/hi/messages.ftl uses the established बिल्ड एज term in both adjacent messages. The open multi-output/implicit-output helper finding is fixed in this head, with coverage for multiple outputs, implicit outputs, escaped spaces, and partial-output non-matches. Please re-review the current head, resolve the inline thread if satisfied, and update the review decision.

Use a manifest-specific localized diagnostic and verify its rendered text. Clarify the Ninja scheduling exception in the IR documentation and align the translations with established catalogue terms.
Carry a default-false opt-in from actions and targets through the IR to
edge-level Ninja bindings, with aggregate and custom-pool validation.
Cover generation, output streaming, and console exclusivity. Document the
serialization trade-off and output limits, and record bounded scheduling
telemetry.
Correct telemetry accounting when Ninja process options fail before
launch, and add a regression test. Match generated build outputs across
multiple outputs and escaped spaces. Apply review corrections to the
related documentation and localized diagnostics.
Validate Ninja process options before recording build telemetry, and flush
each fully written child-output chunk before reading the next one.
Keep flush failures from retrying bytes already accepted by the destination.
Add regression coverage for both progress policies, partial writes, and
draining after a flush failure.
Extract per-edge console checks so invalid custom-pool values retain their
existing error path while the generator validation loop stays direct.
Record reader and writer events in the newline-free two-chunk regression
and assert that each flush precedes the next read. The prior snapshot
assertions could still pass if the copier read the second chunk before
flushing the first.
Keep ordinary command-list fixtures compatible with the console edge
flag, and retain coverage for the existing telemetry error category.
Move the progress callback into the reporter module to satisfy the
runner module size limit while preserving its behaviour.
Share a scoped edge factory across generator tests and report invalid
telemetry fixture categories through the test result. Document the
factory's test-only ownership.
Inject the existing monotonic clock into Ninja build telemetry and test
its exact duration. Exercise console edge counts through the runner and
across generated serial graphs, and correct the developer guide's path.
Preserve console scheduling alongside inline progress descriptions after
rebasing. Update public fixtures and the generated snapshot, and assign
the console decision the next available ADR number.
Adding `console` to `BuildEdge` breaks downstream struct literals because the
struct exposes public fields and is not `#[non_exhaustive]`. Name `BuildEdge`
alongside `Target` in ADR-0061 and in the migration guide's table, prose, and
checklist, so downstream callers see every affected type.
The users' guide described beta4 while beta4 rejects `console` during manifest
validation. State that the field arrives in v0.1.0-beta5 and how to obtain a
compatible build.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
The consolidated migration row told callers to add `description` and
`console` on "both Rust struct literals", but `description` exists only on
`Target`. `BuildEdge` gains `console` alone. Give each type its own Required
row so the checklist never asks for a field the type does not have.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Rebasing onto main brought in the determinism property-test and strategy
modules added by #700, which construct `Target` and `BuildEdge` literals
that predate the new `console` field. Add `console: false` to each so the
workspace type-checks now that both structs require the field.
`console` is false throughout: these generators and fixtures model
parallel/serial ordering and output aliasing, not console scheduling, so
the default preserves their intent. `git diff` against the pre-rebase
branch shows the twelve sites are all new-in-target code.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Rebasing onto main left `src/ninja_gen/property_tests/mod.rs` at 403 raw
lines, three over Whitaker's 400-line module cap: main's determinism work
had already grown it to 399, and the console property-test module and the
new `console`/`action_pool` fields crossed the limit.
Move `edge_strategy_with_ranges` into `property_tests/edge_strategy.rs`,
where it is the module's single responsibility, and re-export it to the
two separator properties that consume it. The parent module drops to 366
lines, leaving headroom for future property tests.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Main's dyndep staging now emits a relay phony alongside every synthetic
serial gate, so `build .netsuke/serial/` matches four statements for a
two-dependency serial edge instead of two.
Collect the serial statements once and assert the two shapes separately:
two gate statements carrying the order-only separator, and two relay
phonies. The console assertions keep their original force: the user edge
selects the console pool, no synthetic statement does, and no sidecar
carries console metadata.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
The serial-staging test identified relay statements by looking for
"/relay-". Staging writes the literal ".netsuke/serial/" prefix but joins
the generated components with the platform separator, so on Windows the
rendered statement reads "...\relay-000" and the forward-slash probe
matched nothing. The Windows CI job failed on that count.
Match the relay name fragment instead and require the relay shape, which
is a single implicit-dependency pipe rather than the gate's order-only
separator. The assertion still pins one relay per serial gate without
depending on how a platform renders the staging path.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Assert the exact `pool` binding of every emitted edge, synthetic gate, and
dyndep sidecar instead of only counting console edges. The property now covers
an action whose shared rule block already selects the console pool, where a
non-console edge must emit an empty `pool =` binding to clear the inherited
value.
`test_support::ninja_edge::edge_pool_bindings` exposes the per-edge bindings so
the property and any future caller assert the same rendered form. File-wide
console bindings are checked as one binding per console edge plus the single
rule-level binding, and sidecars must carry no pool metadata at all.
The generated selection list always leads with one console and one non-console
sibling, so a case cannot pass by exercising a single state.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Record a closed `stream`/`failure_kind` vocabulary for every child-output
forwarding failure, count the classified series through the application
recorder, and state the build-result policy explicitly.
Read, write, flush, and drain failures are now distinct: `ForwardStats`
carries the classification, and `forward_failure` owns the bounded label
arrays, the counter description, and the warning event. A drain failure is
counted separately from the failure that triggered the drain. Interrupted
reads stay retries rather than terminal failures, and a flush failure never
writes the accepted bytes again.
The application recorder admits the counter only through
`FORWARD_FAILURE_LABELS`, so an unregistered metric name or a widened label set
becomes a noop series instead of reaching the retained snapshot. This delivers
the bounded telemetry required by issue #1048.
Forwarding loss never changes the reported build result: the child's exit
status stays authoritative, and a closed parent pipe (`netsuke build | head`)
cannot fail the build. `finalize_streaming` documents that policy, and the
process tests cover a failing child, a successful child, and a joined stderr
stream.
The developers' guide records the reuse boundary, the classification and
telemetry contract, and the result policy.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Split the recorder retention case into declared-series helpers so the test no
longer nests loops, and compare each forwarding result with a single tuple
assertion so no test carries a large assertion block.
The overlong-read case keeps asserting the classification only: the impossible
count is credited to `bytes_read` before the bounds check rejects it, so the
test does not encode an accounting policy it does not own.
CodeScene reported Bumpy Road Ahead in the recorder test and Large Assertion
Blocks in the failure tests at 3f6f02f; both files now score 10.00 and
introduce no new issue.

CodeRabbit's review of 3692a09 raised seven minor localization
findings, all of them terminology inconsistencies between the new
console-pool diagnostics and the rest of their own catalogue:
- Finnish, Gaelic, Hungarian and Japanese each named a build edge two
ways across adjacent messages; the new strings now use the term the
catalogue already established (Koontikaari, oir togail, építési él,
ビルド辺).
- Indonesian used "aksinya" where the file otherwise says "tindakan".
- Korean attached a fixed particle to a placeable; the dual forms
은(는) and 을(를) match the rest of the file and the documented
convention.
- Hindi had replaced the established "बिल्ड कोर" with the transliterated
"बिल्ड एज", so these messages now keep the existing term.
Every change is limited to the affected message values; no placeables,
keys or catalogue structure changed. make check-fmt, make doc-coverage,
make lint, make test and make typecheck all pass on this change set.

Rebased onto the current main (e5d57c583) and force-pushed with lease, bound
to the previous remote head 7c7045b49. New head: a6ab5badb.
git range-diff 2da4eb673..7c7045b49 e5d57c583..a6ab5badb reports every
replayed commit with an identical patch (=). The single dropped commit is 3692a0958 Refresh generated typos configuration: its tree change is
provably empty because main already carries the identical generated typos.toml blob, so skipping it changes no content.
Main's new clap-error-invalid-utf8 key is present in all 35 locale
catalogues, and the three console-pool keys this branch adds are present in
all 35 as well; typos.toml is byte-identical to main.
Rebased gates, run sequentially on a6ab5badb: make check-fmt, make markdownlint, make nixie, make doc-coverage (98.25%, 6,464/6,579), make lint, make test (5,006 passed, 7 skipped, 53 doctests), and make typecheck all passed.
The seven localization findings from the review of 3692a0958 are carried
unchanged into a6ab5badb; the replies on those threads still describe the
current content.

Ninja schedules console output through a construct it calls a pool, but
the glossary had no record of the term, so the Romanian and Vietnamese
catalogues rendered it with a generic group word ("grupul console",
"nhóm console"). That reads as an ordinary group of console entries
rather than Ninja's scheduling pool.
Record `pool` in the source terminology table and map it in both locale
tables: Romanian keeps the loan word, whose definite article takes a
hyphen ("pool-ul consolei", "pool-ul personalizat"), and Vietnamese keeps
"pool console" and "pool tùy chỉnh" uninflected. The three catalogue
messages in each locale now use those forms, leaving every key,
placeable, and catalogue structure unchanged.

Summary
Issue #946 adds a default-false
consoleopt-in for manifest actions and targets, carries scheduling on eachBuildEdge, and emits an edge-levelpool = consolebinding. Validation rejects dependency-only entries and conflicting custom pools while preserving action identity and shared rules. Ordinary edges clear an inherited rule-level console pool when they have not opted in. Ninja runs console-pool edges one at a time and buffers progress and output from other edges while a console edge runs.Closes #946
