Follow-up to #152. CodeRabbit pointed out on a rollout PR that the stated reason for testing the author was wrong: github.actor is whoever triggered the run, and a re-run keeps the original actor (github.triggering_actor names the re-runner). The expression is still right; the reason is that another person pushing to a Dependabot branch would change the actor and flip the runner. Comment and documentation only: ci.yml comment, the contract's comment and docs/developers-guide.md. Gates: check-fmt, lint, typecheck, test, markdownlint clean.

Summary by Sourcery

Correct the documented rationale for using the pull request author when selecting runners for Dependabot jobs.

Enhancements:

  • Clarify the Dependabot runner-selection rationale by documenting the behavior of github.actor for pushes and re-runs, while preserving author-based selection as the stable check.

Documentation:

  • Update the developer guide and CI-related comments to accurately explain Dependabot runner selection and actor semantics.

Selector proof

Selector proof: natural Dependabot runs on ubuntu-latest, all green: https://github.com/leynos/actix-v2a/actions/runs/39958329992, https://github.com/leynos/typos-config-builder/actions/runs/39990740324, https://github.com/leynos/agentland/actions/runs/39965006591; and a main push staying on ubicloud-standard-2: https://github.com/leynos/typos-config-builder/actions/runs/39181228629.

Reviewer's guide (collapsed on small PRs)

Reviewer's Guide

This documentation-only follow-up corrects the rationale for testing the pull request author instead of github.actor: the expression remains unchanged, while comments and developer guidance now accurately explain that a human push to a Dependabot branch would alter the actor and flip runner placement. Formatting, linting, type checking, tests, and Markdown validation are reported clean.

File-Level Changes

Change Details Files
Correct the explanation of why Dependabot pull requests use hosted runners while preserving the existing author-based condition.
  • Clarify that github.actor is the user who triggered the run.
  • Explain that a person pushing to a Dependabot branch would change the actor and therefore the selected runner.
  • Keep the rationale consistent across workflow comments, the runner-placement contract, and developer documentation.

  • Correct the runner-selection rationale in the CI comment, developer guide and contract-test comment.
  • Clarify that github.actor remains the original actor on a re-run, while github.triggering_actor identifies the person who re-ran it.
  • Explain that another person pushing to a Dependabot branch can change runner selection. Keep the runner-selection expression unchanged.

Tests

  • Test results are not established by the supplied evidence.

Walkthrough

The changes clarify the roles of the pull request author and the workflow-triggering actor in Dependabot runner placement. They update the developer guide, workflow comment and test comments. Runner-selection behaviour remains unchanged.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Clarify Dependabot runner selection
docs/developers-guide.md, .github/workflows/ci.yml, tests/test_runner_placement_contract.py
The guide and comments distinguish the pull request author from the actor who triggers a run. The guide also describes actor values for new runs, re-runs, push events and dispatch events. Runner choices and cache behaviour remain unchanged.

Possibly related PRs

  • leynos/wireframe#783: Its workflow and tests address the same author-versus-actor distinction for Dependabot runner placement.
  • leynos/chutoro#348: Its workflows and contracts use an author-based guard for fork or Dependabot runner selection.
  • leynos/podbot#267: Its runner selection uses a pull_request.user.login check for Dependabot pull requests.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title accurately describes the documentation-only change that corrects the actor rationale for Dependabot runner selection. No roadmap item or GitHub issue reference is required by the provided context.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 1 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

Pass. Require no new behavioural test for this pull request because it introduces no functionality or behavioural change. The diff changes explanatory comments in .github/workflows/ci.yml and tests/test_runner_placement_contract.py, documentation in docs/developers-guide.md, and the spelling of parenthesised; the runner expression and executable test logic remain unchanged.

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

Pass this check. The pull request changes comments and the maintainer-facing docs/developers-guide.md only. The runs-on expression is identical in the base and head revisions, so no user-facing behaviour changes. docs/users-guide.md documents the CLI for consumer repositories and does not need an update for this CI rationale correction.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

Pass. The pull request changes comments and the runner-placement explanation only; it does not change an API, architecture, tooling requirement, or system design. docs/developers-guide.md records the runs-on selector, github.actor and github.triggering_actor behaviour, and empty-string values for push and dispatch events. No roadmap, execplan, ADR, or design-document update is required.

Full details: Module-Level Documentation

Explanation

Pass the module-level documentation check. The diff changes comments and Markdown, plus an existing Python test module. No module is added. The test module starts with a docstring that explains its purpose, utility, and relationship to workflows, runners, and cache behaviour.

Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only comments and documentation. The runs-on expression and the test logic remain unchanged. The test-file change is also comment-only. No new executable behaviour requires unit, behavioural, or end-to-end test coverage.

Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)

Explanation

PASS — The pull request changes only comments and documentation. It does not introduce executable behaviour, a new invariant, or a proof assumption. The runner-selection expression remains unchanged, and the test change updates comments and spelling only. No property test or exhaustive proof is required by this check.

Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)

Explanation

Pass this check. The pull request changes only comments and Markdown in .github/workflows/ci.yml, docs/developers-guide.md, and tests/test_runner_placement_contract.py. The runs-on expression and Python test logic remain unchanged. No Rust or TypeScript compile-time behaviour changed, and no text-based UI or structured output is generated that requires snapshot coverage.

Full details: Unit Architecture

Explanation

The pull request changes only comments and developer documentation in .github/workflows/ci.yml, docs/developers-guide.md, and tests/test_runner_placement_contract.py. The runs-on expression and test logic are unchanged. The change introduces no queries, commands, fallible operations, dependencies, state mutation, or side-effects, and it does not alter unit boundaries.

Full details: Domain Architecture

Explanation

Keep the change. The pull request changes only comments and documentation in .github/workflows/ci.yml, docs/developers-guide.md, and tests/test_runner_placement_contract.py. The runs-on expression and test logic remain unchanged. No domain model, command, adapter, transport, persistence, or infrastructure boundary changes occur.

Full details: Observability

Explanation

The pull request changes only comments and developer documentation. The runs-on expression and workflow steps are unchanged in .github/workflows/ci.yml, and the test-file change is comment-only. Therefore, the pull request introduces no operational behaviour that requires logs, metrics, tracing, or alerts.
