Reach files through directory capabilities instead of std::fs - #363
Stage 2 of 3 toward adopting Whitaker in vk. Stage 1 (#362) merged. This moves every std::fs use that Whitaker's capability-filesystem policy rejects onto cap-std directory capabilities. Nothing is suppressed.
src/fs_access.rs (new): create_file and read_to_string open the path's parent as a cap_std::fs::Dir and act on the file name beneath it. It is the one place that calls ambient_authority, because the transcript path comes from the command line and FETCH_HEAD's location from Git. Unit tests cover a round trip, a missing file and a path without a file name.
src/api/client/mod.rs: the GraphQL transcript writer wraps cap_std::fs::File, created through fs_access.
src/ref_parser/git.rs: FETCH_HEAD is read through fs_access.
tests/support/capfs.rs (new), used by tests/support/env.rs, tests/e2e/common.rs and tests/config_errors.rs: fixtures are written, and transcripts read, through a cap_std directory.
Dependency
cap-std = "4.0" becomes a regular dependency. It was already a dev-dependency (with fs_utf8) and is in the lock file, so no crate is added to the build.
Whitaker
On the previous head, whitaker --all -- --all-targets --all-features reported the filesystem findings only (10 in src, tests/support, tests/e2e, plus one in tests/config_errors.rs, fixed in the last commit). The gate for this head runs make check-fmt, make lint and whitaker --all with warnings denied; stage 3 then adds lint-whitaker, the CI step and the docs.
Summary by Sourcery
Replace direct filesystem access with capability-based directory operations throughout production code and test fixtures.
New Features:
Route production and test fixture file access through capability-based directory handles for transcript files, configuration fixtures, and Git metadata.
Enhancements:
Centralize access to user-supplied and Git-reported paths while intentionally enforcing cap-std symlink containment behavior.
Document the filesystem capability policy and repository layout changes.
Reorganize review-thread option tests and add descriptive test-module documentation.
Build:
Add cap-std as a regular runtime dependency.
Documentation:
Document capability-based filesystem access, authority boundaries, and symlink behavior for contributors.
Tests:
Add coverage for capability-based file creation and reading, including missing paths, invalid inputs, truncation, invalid UTF-8, directories, and escaping symlinks.
Update integration and end-to-end fixtures to use directory-capability file helpers.
Add inner doc comments to the three test modules and recover from a poisoned environment lock: the mutex guards no data, only exclusive access to the process environment, so a panic while held leaves nothing inconsistent.
Whitaker reports an expect on the two literal regex statics, an expect inside #[tokio::main]'s generated runtime build, an unwrap_or_else that panics in the merge-case lookup, and a commands module of 526 lines against a 400-line limit.
Hold each regex as an Option built with .ok(), with a test that the literal compiles, so a failure degrades instead of panicking. Build the multi-thread runtime explicitly and surface a build failure as VkError::Io. Use let-else in the test lookup. Move the terminal output helpers and the branch and repository auto-detection out of commands.rs into commands/output.rs and commands/branch.rs; behaviour is unchanged.
Cover the new failure contracts: a poisoned environment lock is recovered, an unavailable hunk pattern leaves the gutter blank, an unavailable locale pattern matches nothing, and a failed runtime build is a VkError::Io. Each takes the unavailable value as a parameter so a test can supply it. Update the design document's sequence diagram and repository-resolution note for commands/branch.rs, and record the commands module boundaries in the developers' guide.
Whitaker's capability-filesystem policy rejects std::fs. The transcript path comes from the command line and FETCH_HEAD's location from Git, so src/fs_access.rs opens the path's parent as a cap_std Dir (the one place that calls ambient_authority) and creates or reads the file beneath it. The GraphQL client's transcript writer now wraps cap_std::fs::File. Tests write their fixtures through a small cap_std helper.
cap-std becomes a regular dependency; it was already a dev-dependency and is in the lock file, so no crate is added to the build.

The PR completes the filesystem migration required by Whitaker by routing application file creation and reads, plus test fixture access, through cap-std directory capabilities. A centralized helper handles user- and Git-supplied paths, with focused unit tests and cap-std promoted to a runtime dependency.
Centralize file access through directory capabilities for externally supplied and Git-reported paths.
Added helpers that split a path into parent directory and file name, open the parent with ambient authority, and create or read the file through cap-std.
Added unit coverage for round trips, missing files, and paths without file names.
Updated transcript creation and FETCH_HEAD parsing to use the capability-based helpers.
Declared cap-std 4.0 in the regular dependency section while reusing the existing lockfile dependency.

Summary
Route filesystem access covered by Whitaker’s policy through cap-std directory capabilities. Add src/fs_access.rs with helpers to create and read files relative to their parent directory. Use these helpers for GraphQL transcripts and FETCH_HEAD. Use the shared capfs test support to write test fixtures.
Return InvalidInput when a path has no file name. Use . when the parent path is empty. Open the parent directory with ambient authority. Add unit tests for round trips, missing files and paths without file names.
Add cap-std = "4.0" as a regular dependency. No new execplan was identified.
Walkthrough
The change adds cap-std directory-capability helpers for file creation and reading. The transcript client and Git reference parser use these helpers. Test utilities also use capability-based access for fixture files and transcripts.
Adds cap-std and a private filesystem module. The helpers open a parent directory, then create or read a named file. Tests cover successful reads and writes, missing files, and invalid paths.
Production file access src/api/client/mod.rs, src/ref_parser/git.rs
The transcript client creates files through the new helper. Git reference parsing reads FETCH_HEAD through the helper and returns None when the read fails.
Test fixture and transcript access tests/support/capfs.rs, tests/config_errors.rs, tests/e2e/common.rs, tests/support/env.rs
Adds a test fixture writer that uses directory capabilities. Configuration files, FETCH_HEAD, and transcripts use capability-based file access.
leynos/polean#18: Applies the same cap-std filesystem policy to test files in another Rust repository.
leynos/vk#362: Prepares the filesystem cleanup that this PR continues with production and test access changes.
Suggested labels: Issue, Roadmap
Suggested reviewers: codescene-access
Change: Refactor
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 573a7
The change can truncate an existing file when a transcript path ends in a separator. It also breaks transcripts that go through symlinks pointing outside the target directory, and it can change which repository is detected when FETCH_HEAD is such a symlink. Both are narrow edge cases that should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title, "Reach files through directory capabilities instead of std::fs", matches the main change. The PR adds cap-std directory-capability helpers in src/fs_access.rs and moves the transcript writer, FETCH_HEAD reader and test fixtures off std::fs. The title does not name a roadmap item or issue, and the title requirements only call for those references when a roadmap task or issue is referenced in the PR description or execplan. The description cites DF12-89 and a stage in a series, but it does not reference a numbered roadmap item in the format the requirements describe, so the title is not required to carry one.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is directly related to the changeset. It explains the new src/fs_access.rs helpers, the transcript writer and FETCH_HEAD changes, the test fixtures in tests/support/capfs.rs, and the promotion of cap-std to a regular dependency.

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 5 functions across 8 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)
Full details: Testing (Overall)
Explanation
The changed file behaviour has substantive coverage. src/fs_access.rs:71-92 tests file creation and reading with a content assertion, missing-file errors, and rejection of paths without a file name. The existing src/api/client/transport_tests.rs:292-338 test exercises transcript creation and validates one complete request/response pair for each concurrent operation. The existing src/ref_parser/tests.rs:55-68 and src/commands/tests.rs:151-216 tests exercise FETCH_HEAD reading, precedence, and fallback behaviour. The tests would fail for missing, misdirected, or malformed file access. They test observable behaviour rather than the cap-std implementation detail.
Full details: User-Facing Documentation
Explanation
No new user-facing functionality or intended behaviour is introduced. The diff changes internal file access from std::fs to cap_std while retaining the existing transcript path and FETCH_HEAD flows. Public GraphQLClient constructors keep the same signatures, and docs/users-guide.md is unchanged. No user-guide update is required.
Full details: Module-Level Documentation
Explanation
Accept the module documentation. The added src/fs_access.rs module documents its purpose, capability-based operation, and relationship to command-line and Git paths at lines 1–8. The added tests/support/capfs.rs module documents its test-fixture role and capability helper at lines 1–5. The modified module files retain clear //! documentation, and the new fs_access::tests module is documented at lines 63–64. No changed module lacks the required purpose and component context.
Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)
Explanation
The pull request adds focused unit tests for fs_access: a successful round trip, a missing-file error, and rejection of a path without a file name. Existing boundary tests also exercise the changed callers. The GraphQL transport test creates a transcript through GraphQLClient and verifies persisted request and response pairs. Ref-parser, command, and end-to-end CLI tests exercise FETCH_HEAD resolution. The available tests cover the changed behaviour without relying only on private helper seams.
Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)
Explanation
Keep the existing unit tests. The change introduces straightforward path splitting and file round-trip behaviour in src/fs_access.rs; the implementation is directly auditable, and the tests cover successful round-trip, missing-file failure, and paths without a file name. No introduced lemma or proof assumption requires exhaustive proof. A property test is not required by this check.
Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)
Explanation
The pull request changes runtime file-access implementation and adds focused unit tests for round-trip, missing-file, and invalid-path behaviour. It does not introduce compile-time behaviour, public API constraints, compiler diagnostics, or UI/text output variants that require trybuild or snapshot tests. Existing transcript tests retain semantic assertions for JSONL content, while the changed code only changes how files are opened.
Full details: Unit Architecture
Explanation
The change preserves the unit boundaries. src/fs_access.rs is a small, dedicated filesystem adapter. Its create_file and read_to_string APIs return io::Result, and the only ambient_authority use is isolated there for externally supplied paths. GraphQLClient::with_endpoint_retry exposes transcript creation failure through Result, while commands::build_graphql_client handles that failure at the command boundary. repo_from_fetch_head_impl remains a read-only query path; the PR changes only its filesystem adapter and preserves its existing Option boundary. Test fixture writes and transcript reads remain isolated in test support helpers. No changed code hides a new side-effect or introduces an unrelated responsibility.
Full details: Domain Architecture
Explanation
Keep the change. The new filesystem code is isolated in src/fs_access.rs (lines 1-58), where ambient_authority is confined to the external-path boundary. src/api/client/mod.rs (lines 40-55, 101-115) remains transport code, and src/ref_parser/git.rs (lines 49-70) remains a Git adapter. The domain types and parsing functions in src/ref_parser/mod.rs are unchanged. The pull request introduces no filesystem, transport, or vendor-specific concern into the domain model.
Full details: Observability
Explanation
Pass the observability check. The production changes replace std::fs access with cap_std access without adding a new request, retry, queue, or service boundary. Transcript-creation failures remain logged by build_graphql_client with the error, and transcript write and flush failures retain structured warnings and bounded metrics. FETCH_HEAD read failures retain the existing fallback behaviour; successful source selection is already logged with tracing::debug!. The diff adds no unbounded metrics labels, sensitive logging, or new alert requirement.
Full details: Developer Documentation
Explanation
The pull request adds a new src::fs_access abstraction with crate-visible create_file and read_to_string APIs, changes transcript and FETCH_HEAD access to cap_std capabilities, and promotes cap-std to a regular dependency. The reviewed range changes no documentation file. docs/developers-guide.md requires new ownership boundaries to be documented at lines 92-94, but it has no section for src/fs_access, the ambient-authority boundary, or the regular cap-std build requirement. The existing source and Cargo.toml comments do not satisfy the developer-guide requirement.
Resolution
Add a developer-guide section that documents src/fs_access, its path-parent capability boundary, the single ambient_authority use, the GraphQL transcript and FETCH_HEAD callers, and the cap-std dependency and validation requirements. Update the relevant design document or add an ADR to record the capability-filesystem decision and its scope. Keep any related roadmap or execplan status current.
Open the parent, name the file, Read its contents, write in style. Test paths follow through the door, Git reads FETCH_HEAD as before. Keep each file within its view, And let the capability through.

Reject directory-shaped transcript paths before truncation.
Path::file_name removes trailing separators and /.. A transcript path such as existing-file/ therefore becomes existing-file, which create_file truncates. The previous file creation rejected that path. Reject such paths before splitting them, and test that the existing file remains unchanged. (doc.rust-lang.org)

Preserve access through user-selected symlinks.
Dir rejects symlinks that lead outside its directory. An external transcript symlink therefore fails, and a FETCH_HEAD symlink outside .git makes repository discovery fall back to origin, which can select a different repository. Preserve the previous symlink behaviour for both helpers, including dangling transcript targets, and add tests for these cases. (docs.rs)

tests/auth.rs wrote two config files through std::fs, and the workflow-contract shell module was three lines over the 400-line limit; write through the capability helper and fold four doc comments onto fewer lines.
@coderabbitai This moves vk's remaining std::fs uses onto cap-std directory capabilities: a new fs_access module opens a path's parent as a Dir and creates or reads the file beneath it (the one place that calls ambient_authority), the GraphQL transcript writer wraps cap_std::fs::File, FETCH_HEAD is read through the helper, and tests write fixtures through a small cap_std helper. cap-std becomes a regular dependency (already a dev-dependency and in the lock file). Is the migration sound, are the helper's error paths covered, and is anything missing?

@wafflecat-df12 Treat the migration as structurally sound, but not yet complete. Keep the parent-directory boundary and the existing caller error handling. Address these gaps before calling it finished.
Complete the migration
Replace the remaining direct std::fs operations:
src/config_loader.rs, Line 174 and Line 193: configuration-fixture writes.
src/test_utils/git_fixture.rs, Line 121: FETCH_HEAD fixture write.
src/api/client/transport_tests.rs, Line 332: transcript read.
Reuse fs_access from these binary-crate tests where practical. Preserve io::Result propagation in GitRepoFixture.
Extend the error-path coverage
Keep the existing tests. They cover a successful round trip, a missing-file error, and InvalidInput from create_file("/"). The transcript concurrency test also checks persisted request/response pairs.
Add focused cases for the uncovered paths:
Missing parent directory, for both helpers.
Existing directory used as the file target, to exercise creation failure.
Invalid UTF-8 contents, to exercise the read failure.
Paths without a file name passed to read_to_string.
A bare relative filename, to exercise the "." parent fallback.
Truncation of an existing file.
Strengthen the missing-file assertion from is_err() to ErrorKind::NotFound.
Make the compatibility boundary explicit
Document and test final-component symlinks. cap-std rejects symlink traversal outside the opened directory, including absolute symlink targets. This differs from std::fs. A transcript path that names such a symlink can now fail; a similarly linked FETCH_HEAD can now trigger the existing fallback. citeturn568820view0
Keep this restriction if it is intentional. Do not describe the migration as fully behaviour-preserving without recording it. The helper still acquires ambient authority for an arbitrary parent path; it does not confine all input paths to a preselected root.
Finish documentation and validation
Document fs_access, its permitted callers, its ambient-authority boundary, and the regular cap-std dependency in the developer guide and relevant design document. AGENTS.md and docs/developers-guide.md, Line 92, require this boundary documentation.
Change the new shared helpers in tests/support/capfs.rs to return Result instead of calling expect. The repository instructions explicitly prohibit panicking shared fixtures.
Scope “the one place that calls ambient_authority” to production code. Integration-test helpers also call it.
The inspected production paths preserve error propagation: transcript creation maps failures to VkError::Io, and FETCH_HEAD reads retain the existing Option fallback. I did not run repository code. Verify the current revision with make check-fmt, make lint, make test, and the stated whitaker --all gate with warnings denied.
Move the remaining std::fs uses in the unit tests onto the capability helpers, return Result from the shared integration-test helper instead of panicking, and cover the helpers' error paths: missing parent, a directory as the file target, invalid UTF-8, a path with no file name, the bare-relative-name fallback, truncation, NotFound, and a symlink whose target escapes the directory. Document fs_access, its callers, the ambient-authority boundary and the symlink restriction in the developers' guide and repository layout.
Whitaker's lint of the bin test target reported eleven test modules without inner docs, a review_threads test module of 647 lines against a 400-line limit, and a std::fs call in the new helper's tests. Add the inner docs, split the fetch-options, retry and pagination tests into review_threads/tests_options.rs, and create the fixture directory through a cap-std Dir.

The remaining unit-test std::fs uses go through fs_access or a cap-std Dir, the shared integration helper returns io::Result, and the helper tests now cover a missing parent, a directory as the file target, invalid UTF-8, a path with no file name, the bare-relative-name fallback, truncation, NotFound and a symlink whose absolute target escapes the directory. The developers' guide documents fs_access, its callers, the ambient-authority boundary scoped to production code, the regular cap-std dependency and the symlink restriction. The local gate at this head runs make check-fmt, make lint, make test and whitaker --all with warnings denied, all passing, and also needed eleven inner docs and a split of a 647-line test module that the bin test target had hidden. Is anything still open?
@wafflecat-df12 Treat the filesystem migration concerns as addressed at 4d777260bb220e7a7ce62958c1539ae70277c791. I verified the replacement call sites, io::Result propagation, added test assertions, and developer documentation. The split test files are now 378 and 277 lines.
One check remains open:CodeScene Code Health Review fails on code duplication in src/review_threads/tests.rs. It reports a code-health decline from 10.00 to 9.39. Inspect the reported duplication and resolve or explicitly disposition that finding before merging. The check output does not establish a filesystem defect.
GitHub reports successful build-test, unstable-rest-resolve, and Gecko Security checks for this head. I did not run repository code or independently verify the local Whitaker result.
No further filesystem implementation or error-path coverage issue emerged from this inspection.
I couldn't check this conversation for new learnings, so no new learning was saved.
Disposition of the CodeScene Code Health finding: it reports duplication in src/review_threads/tests.rs (10.00 to 9.39). That file now holds the fixtures that were already there, moved unchanged apart from visibility: pagination_client and path_variant_client both build the same nested review-thread JSON by hand. The split exists to bring a 647-line test module under Whitaker's 400-line limit, and it exposed the duplication as a larger share of a smaller file. CodeScene's check is not a required status for this repository. A shared thread-body builder for those fixtures is worth doing, but as its own change so this migration stays reviewable; I will raise it as a follow-up rather than mix it in here.
