Summary

This branch fixes client source lint findings before the estate lint configuration is enabled. It removes unsafe pooled-connection extraction while preserving graceful teardown on an active Tokio runtime and on a thread without one. It also makes eligible client methods const, handles ignored results, simplifies conditional code, and replaces six tracing booleans with a compact operation selector without changing the public builder API.

The ancestors of this change are now merged. #709 (harden-lint-spelling) and #710 (harden-lint-modules) both landed on main, this PR was retargeted to main, and the estate no longer has an intermediate parent to stack against. This PR is the first source-fix layer directly above main; #712 remains the client-test quality layer above it.

Review walkthrough

Scope provenance

This PR has no in-repository ExecPlan. The accepted scope is the external estate lint-remediation brief that is driving the client-source hardening series, not a plan file in this diff. Stating that explicitly matters for review: a reviewer searching docs/execplans/ for the governing plan will not find one, and should not read the absence as a missing deliverable.

The only ExecPlan that a completeness assessment would surface by grepping the changed surface is adopt-shared-mutation-workflow, because the pre-rebase history touched it. It governs shared mutation-testing workflow adoption, requires no Rust changes, and is unrelated to this work. It is also byte-identical at the assessed base, the assessed head, and origin/main (blob 9107413c), and it does not appear in this PR's diff at all. Its tasks and its no-Rust-changes constraint do not apply here and are not omissions in this PR.

The governing client-lint scope is carried by the PR objectives themselves: pooled-ownership safety, runtime-independent teardown, const-eligible client APIs, ignored-result handling, conditional simplification, and the six-operation tracing timing selector. That is what this diff is assessed against.

Rebase onto the current main

The branch previously drifted from its parent, was rebased once onto the harden-lint-modules tip 616f250 on 2026-10-11, and has now been replayed a second time onto main after #709 and #710 landed. The second replay is the one this PR's diff reflects.

Final candidate: 70a998be07a032be61fa01e36b2f7cbbdb07e25c over origin/main ef858aa0ec019358495612b1bb429b932ae12392, 8 commits, net diff 38 files, +664 −216.

Two commits from the pre-rebase series were correctly dropped as already upstream:

  • b47e057 "Converge the mutation-workflow plan onto upstream wrapping" — origin/main had already rewrapped docs/execplans/adopt-shared-mutation-workflow.md in b479338.
  • 2eb5add "Refresh the generated spelling policy from the pinned gate" — this only regenerated typos.toml because the old base pinned typos-config-builder v0.1.1 against main's v0.1.3. The current base pins v0.1.3, so the file is no longer touched by the gate and must not be in this diff.

Content preservation was verified per commit with git patch-id --stable. Six of the eight replayed commits are byte-identical to their pre-rebase originals. The two that differ are fully accounted for:

  • 34899f4 → 5e23bd3 "Fix client lint findings and pooled teardown": identical file list and per-file change counts. The only delta is in src/client/pool/scheduler.rs, caused by the three intended edits now applying to a base that main itself had refactored.
  • a8a1ec1 → 2eaae10 "Prove client timing and teardown contracts": identical file list and identical 324 insertions / 21 deletions. The only delta is the position of t.pass("tests/ui/client_const_api.rs"); inside tests/compile_error.rs, which moved within the conflicted hunk. Both the client const-API pass case and the ancestor zero_test_budget compile-fail case are present.

Validation

One conflict-resolution defect was found and fixed during this replay, and it is worth recording because it is easy to miss.

The conflict resolution inserted a blank line in src/client/pool/scheduler.rs between the WaiterSender type alias and the following doc comment. cargo fmt --all -- --check accepts both the 400-line and 401-line versions — a blank line before a doc comment is not a formatting error — so make check-fmt passed. But origin/main already sat at exactly 400 lines, and Whitaker's module-max-lines Dylint lint fails at 401:

error: Module scheduler spans 401 lines, exceeding the allowed 400.
  --> src/client/pool/mod.rs:14:5

The blank line was removed and the owning commit amended, so the file is back to 400 lines and the rebase stays content-preserving. The module is unchanged from main apart from the three intended edits — is_some_and for the round-robin waiter push, and drop(waiter.send(..)) in two places. No threshold was raised and no lint was suppressed.

All affected modules were then checked against main for the same hazard. runtime.rs rises 385 → 395 and is the only other module near the limit; nothing crosses it.

make test passing 1240 tests is the strongest evidence available that the rebase is behaviour-preserving: it includes both trybuild UI cases (client_const_api.rs and the ancestor zero_test_budget.rs), whose absence would have shown up as a compile-error expectation mismatch.

Hosted CI status

The chained-merge-ref stall recorded in earlier revisions of this description is resolved.

The old head 2eb5add was CONFLICTING/DIRTY: git merge-tree origin/main 2eb5add reports 67 conflicts, and refs/pull/711/merge had been frozen at bd753a6 (built 2026-09-24) ever since.

Head 70a998b sits directly on current main. git merge-tree --write-tree origin/main 70a998b returns exit 0 with zero conflicts; GitHub now reports mergeable: MERGEABLE; and the merge ref has been rebuilt as 4e9bc8e with parents ef858aa + 70a998b. The pull_request-triggered CI workflow — the one carrying the required build-test check — dispatched for the first time in this PR's recent history as a direct result. The fix was the new base, exactly as the earlier diagnosis predicted; the old head could not have produced a run while the ref was frozen.

Assessment follow-up

An ExecPlan completeness assessment raised one in-scope gap, which has been repaired. CodeRabbit's own framing is preserved: this was a test-robustness defect, and it does not establish that production teardown currently hangs.

The detached-thread case of managed_connection_drop_runs_teardown_once joined its worker thread synchronously before arming the one-second notification timeout. Because #[tokio::test] drives a single-threaded runtime, that blocking join starved the executor and the timeout could never be reached — so a teardown that never completed would hang the suite rather than fail it. The timeout did not bound the path it appeared to bound.

DropSite::drop_managed now returns a DropCompletion describing how to wait rather than joining inline. The detached worker signals through a oneshot channel as soon as the drop completes, and DropCompletion::wait awaits that channel under a shared GRACE budget before joining. A stuck drop fails on the elapsed timeout with a diagnostic; a worker panic is still attributed to the test, because the join happens only once the worker has already finished.

Negative control

The bound was verified by experiment, not inspection. Injecting a thirty-second sleep into the detached worker produces, in place of an indefinite block:

test ...case_1_active_runtime ... ok
test ...case_2_detached_thread ... FAILED
Error: Custom { kind: Other, error: "pooled connection drop did not finish within the grace period" }
test result: FAILED. 1 passed; 1 failed; ... finished in 1.00s

The injection was reverted immediately; the committed file contains no sleep.

The related proof assessment accepted timing_updates_match_reference_after_every_action as bounded differential property testing and requested no change. Its qualifications are adopted rather than disputed: the property samples its domain rather than proving it, [bool; 6] is an author-written oracle with no external validation, the assertions run only after the first action so default_timing_flags_are_all_false is what covers the default, and the elapsed_us assertions check presence in span context rather than numeric value. No proof beyond the property test is claimed.

Review follow-up

Two unresolved CodeRabbit findings were repaired on top of the earlier series:

  • Shared lazy hook counter. record_count and record_error_count were byte-identical lazy incrementing counters defined privately in src/client/tests/lifecycle.rs and src/client/tests/error_handling.rs. They are replaced by a single pub(super) fn record_count in src/client/tests/helpers.rs, matching the existing pub(super) convention that request_hooks_support already uses. The now-unused future::Future and futures::future::lazy imports are dropped from error_handling.rs. Behaviour is unchanged: the counter still increments only on first poll.
  • Propagated push error. tests/push.rs::unlimited_queues_do_not_block discarded the inner PushError from time::timeout with let _, so a genuine push failure surfaced later as an opaque receive failure. Both layers are now propagated, matching the pattern the throttling-disabled test at the top of the file already uses.

These are commits 51a2188 and ce0cfae in the current series.

One further finding, raised by chatgpt-codex-connector on the current head,
was repaired in b49857c:

  • Missing usage examples on the timing helpers. ClientTimingFlags::with_enabled,
all, and is_enabled carried only one-line summaries. AGENTS.md requires
function documentation to include clear examples demonstrating usage and
outcome, and the repository already follows that for crate-internal helpers
    such as ActorState::new (src/connection/state.rs:31) and
    process_frame_with_hooks_and_metrics (src/connection/frame.rs:58). Each
method now documents its effect with a worked example. The fences are
plaintext because the type is pub(crate): a compiled doctest cannot name
it from outside the crate, so a bare fence would either fail to resolve or
force the example to be ignored.

Documentation only; no behaviour change.

A further round of CodeRabbit pre-merge checks failed on b49857c with one
error and one warning, and both were repaired in 4385a07:

  • Module-Level Documentation (error). src/client/tracing_timing.rs carried
only a one-line module comment. It now has a title line and a paragraph naming
the six timed categories, explaining that the six selections are packed into
one copyable u8 rather than six parallel booleans, and recording how
TracingConfig drives and reads them. The form matches the sibling modules
    tracing_config.rs and tracing_helpers.rs.
  • User-Facing Documentation (warning). The compile-time client
configuration this branch introduces was undocumented. docs/users-guide.md
now has a "Compile-time client configuration" section listing the const
surface, naming the three clamping setters that deliberately stay non-const,
noting the reuseport platform restriction, and pointing at the trybuild
    fixture that enforces the contract.

The example in that section was compiled as a real example target rather than
written on trust; cargo check --example exited 0. CodeRabbit has since
confirmed both rows resolved against 4385a07.

CodeScene

The one CodeScene finding that genuinely belonged to this PR — a Code Duplication violation in src/client/tests/pool.rs introduced by its own work — was repaired by the "Collapse the pooled teardown tests into one case table" commit (70a998b), and the hosted CodeScene check reports pass on the predecessor head 2eb5add (result 7899038).

The earlier tests/formal_tooling/targets.rs finding was attributed to this PR by a stale merge base and has been withdrawn by CodeRabbit with no outstanding work, either here or transferred elsewhere. The corrected comparison is what removed it: the file is not in this PR's diff (confirmed above — 38 files, none of them targets.rs).

Notes

The review follow-up adds operation-specific elapsed_us assertions, bounded timing-selector property checks, a const-context UI case, and maintainer documentation. Both pool teardown tests now await a test-only signal sent only after close() returns; the shared setup is an async rstest fixture. No production API or release layout changed.

This PR is part of reconstructed stack #715, at position 8 of 11. The three layers above it (#712, #716, #717) still carry the pre-landing lineage and will need restacking once this layer lands. No lint suppression was added anywhere in this branch.

Summary

  • Replace pooled-client dereferencing with fallible client_mut access. Transfer client ownership once during teardown. Run close() on the active Tokio runtime, or on a current-thread runtime when no runtime is available.
  • Add teardown tests for both runtime paths. Bound completion with a timeout and verify that the close callback runs once.
  • Replace six internal timing booleans with ClientOperation and ClientTimingFlags. Preserve the public timing builder API and document the timing categories.
  • Make eligible client configuration methods and getters const. Add a compile-time UI test for the public const API.
  • Simplify lifecycle callback fields, ignored-result handling and related tests. Add timing-event assertions and update the developer guide and client design document.
  • Add usage examples to the timing-flag helper documentation. This later documentation-only change does not alter behaviour.

Testing

The author reports that all six local gates passed on repair head 2b67a90bb324857d07c20fe375b62c7214f8b103: formatting, lint, typecheck, tests (1,240 passed; none failed or were ignored), Markdown lint and Nix formatting. The author also reports successful hosted checks and a negative-control sleep that caused the bounded teardown test to fail within its grace period. These results have not been independently verified here.

No new in-repository ExecPlan is identified. The change follows an external estate lint-remediation brief. The shared mutation-workflow ExecPlan is unrelated.

Walkthrough

Client timing now uses operation-indexed flags. Managed pooled connections take ownership of the client during teardown. Many client methods are now const fn. Tests and documentation cover these changes.

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

The pull request adds user-facing compile-time API capability: many public client configuration methods are now const, and tests/ui/client_const_api.rs exercises socket, codec, tracing, streaming, and builder configuration in const fn contexts. docs/users-guide.md is unchanged and does not explain this capability. The new six-category timing behaviour and pooled teardown semantics are documented only in docs/developers-guide.md and docs/wireframe-client-design.md, not in the user guide.

Resolution

Update docs/users-guide.md with a client configuration section that documents the supported const methods and shows a compile-time configuration example. Extend the client tracing and pool sections to describe the six independent timing categories and the teardown behaviour that users can observe.

Full details: Module-Level Documentation

Explanation

Fail the module documentation check. The new src/client/tracing_timing.rs module has only //! Compact timing switches for the six client operation categories. at line 1. This states the topic but does not explain the module's utility and function, or its relationship with TracingConfig. src/client/tracing_config.rs imports ClientOperation and ClientTimingFlags at line 8 and stores ClientTimingFlags at line 55, so that relationship is material.

Resolution

Expand the module-level documentation in src/client/tracing_timing.rs. Explain that ClientOperation selects one of six timing categories, that ClientTimingFlags stores the selections as independent bits, and that TracingConfig uses these types to control elapsed-time events in the client operation modules.

Reviewer's Guide

The PR removes unsafe pooled connection ownership handling in favor of fallible live-client borrowing and exactly-once teardown across runtime contexts, while consolidating tracing timing state, renaming internal lifecycle hooks, and applying broad client lint and const-correctness fixes without changing the public builder API.

@coderabbitai Have the following failed checks now been resolved?

If further work is required, please provide an AI agent prompt for the remaining work to be done to address these failures.

Do not treat warnings as optional or aspirational.

❌ Failed checks (1 error, 3 warnings)

Check name Previous status Resolution and evidence
Testing (Overall) ❌ Error Commit ca76183 adds receive, streaming, and close elapsed_us assertions with only each operation's timing category enabled. Both pool teardown tests await a test-only signal sent after close() returns before asserting exactly-once cleanup. Focused teardown tests passed 2/2 and the full Make test gate passed.
Developer Documentation ⚠️ Warning The developers' guide and client design document now explain one-shot pooled ownership, client_mut after transfer, runtime teardown paths, six independent timing categories, and the internal selector representation. Markdown gates passed.
Testing (Property / Proof) ⚠️ Warning A bounded proptest action sequence compares every state transition of ClientTimingFlags and TracingConfig with a six-boolean reference model; the property and full test gate passed.
Testing (Compile-Time / Ui) ⚠️ Warning New tests/ui/client_const_api.rs exercises representative public client builder, socket, codec, tracing, and streaming methods in const contexts and const bindings for streaming outcome accessors. The registered trybuild pass case ran in the full test gate.

All nine Make gates and the strict scratch all-target/all-features Clippy probe passed on this patch. Review repair commit: ca76183.

@leynos, the commit addresses the four reported findings in the source files. Do not mark all four checks as passed yet: build-test was still pending in the latest result.

Finding Status
Testing (Overall) Implemented; CI pending. Receive, streaming, and close assert elapsed_us with only their matching timing category enabled. On both teardown paths, the test signal is sent after close() returns.
Developer Documentation Addressed. Both documents describe one-shot ownership, client_mut after transfer, both runtime paths, and the six timing categories and selector.
Testing (Property / Proof) Implemented; CI pending. The bounded proptest checks both ClientTimingFlags and TracingConfig against a six-boolean model after each action.
Testing (Compile-Time / Ui) Implemented; CI pending. The const API case is registered as a trybuild pass case. Its CI result is not yet confirmed.

Further work remains: wait for build-test, and investigate the separate failed CodeScene Code Health Review. Use this AI agent prompt:

Inspect PR `#711` at commit ca7618320ab9d85197650011d67b1084d3c55a25. Treat all four reported findings as required, including the three warnings.

Wait for build-test to complete. Confirm that the timing, pooled teardown, bounded proptest, and registered const API trybuild tests pass. If build-test fails, inspect its log, fix the failure, and rerun the relevant gates.

Investigate the failed CodeScene Code Health Review separately. Identify its specific findings and fix actionable regressions. Report the final status and evidence for every required check. Do not mark a pending or failing check as passed.

@coderabbitai — reply to Assessment-ID pr711-completeness-20261012-a. Both findings actioned.

Scope provenance — accepted, and the gap was on my side. You were right that the mapping was not derivable from the PR alone; my description named no governing plan. I have added a Scope provenance section stating that this PR has no in-repository ExecPlan and that the accepted scope is the external estate lint-remediation brief. It records the blob evidence you found (9107413c at base, head, and origin/main; absent from the diff) and states explicitly that the mutation-workflow plan's tasks and its no-Rust-changes constraint do not apply here, so no reviewer re-derives them as omissions. Your reading was correct; the missing artefact was the statement, not a deliverable.

Detached-thread teardown gap — confirmed and repaired. You were right, and the defect was worse than a missing bound: under #[tokio::test] the runtime is current-thread, so the blocking join() starved the executor and timeout at the old line 104 could never arm. A hung teardown hangs the suite rather than failing it.

Repair, in src/client/tests/pool.rs:

  • DropSite::drop_managed now returns a DropCompletion instead of a TestResult.
  • DropCompletion::Detached no longer joins inline. The worker signals through a oneshot channel when the drop completes; DropCompletion::wait awaits that channel under GRACE and only then joins, so a panic inside the worker is still reported against the test.
if timeout(grace, finished).await.is_err() {
    return Err(std::io::Error::other(
"pooled connection drop did not finish within the grace period",
    )
    .into());
}
join_worker(worker)

Negative control, since a test-robustness fix should not be taken on assertion. I injected a 30-second sleep into the detached worker and ran the two cases. Before the repair that run blocks indefinitely; after it:

test ...case_1_active_runtime ... ok
test ...case_2_detached_thread ... FAILED
Error: Custom { kind: Other, error: "pooled connection drop did not finish within the grace period" }
test result: FAILED. 1 passed; 1 failed; ... finished in 1.00s

The hang is now converted into a 1-second failure with a diagnostic, which is the behaviour the finding asked for. The injection was reverted immediately; grep -n sleep src/client/tests/pool.rs is empty, and the committed file contains no sleep.

Your framing is right that this is a test-robustness defect and does not establish that production teardown currently hangs. I am making no such claim. I am also not claiming coverage for the inherited boundaries you list — runtime shutdown cancellation and fallback-runtime construction failure — which this change does not touch.

build-test is now green on the assessed head 70a998b: SUCCESS, as are CodeQL (all three languages), CodeScene, and Gecko. I am re-running the six local gates against the repair and will report the new head here.

@coderabbitai — reply to Assessment-ID pr711-proof-20261012-a. Accepted as scoped; no change requested to the property, and I am adopting each qualification.

All five limitations verified against the source and accepted as accurate. I re-checked rather than assuming:

  1. Universal claim. Correct. The property quantifies over sequences in its domain; a passing run samples them. It is evidence, not proof, and I will not describe it as more.
  2. Oracle trust boundary. Correct and the sharpest of the five. [bool; 6] is hand-written by the same author as the implementation, so it is not an external specification, and there is no negative-control execution validating the oracle itself. This is the standing limit on fault-detection evidence here.
  3. Initial-state coverage. Correct. The property asserts only after each action, so a first SetAll can mask a wrong default; default_timing_flags_are_all_false (src/client/tracing_config.rs:289) is what actually covers the default.
  4. Timing-value claim. Correct and important. The receive, streaming, and close assertions check that elapsed_us is present in the expected span context; they do not validate its numeric value, unit, or interval. Nothing here establishes elapsed-time correctness.
  5. Inspection versus execution. Correct. Execution evidence is the gate run, not this property's presence.

On the two-snapshot point. Your correction is right and I had been treating the pair too generously. TracingConfig wraps ClientTimingFlags, so config_snapshot is not a second independent implementation; the public-setter assertion is wiring coverage, and [bool; 6] is the only independent comparison.

On the negative control you flagged as absent. I have not added one, and I want to be explicit that this is a deliberate open limitation rather than an oversight: a negative control here means mutating the production masks and confirming the property fails, which is a test-only experiment I ran for the teardown fix but did not construct for the timing masks. It would strengthen the fault-detection evidence beyond what the oracle can self-certify. I am recording it as a known gap rather than claiming it.

Correction to one detail in your report. Cargo.toml declares proptest = "1.7.0" and Cargo.lock resolves 1.11.0. That is correct and intended: this repository requires implicit caret-compatible version requirements with no caret prefix (AGENTS.md, dependency management), so "1.7.0" permits non-breaking minor updates while excluding a breaking major. The lock holding 1.11.0 is consistent, not drift. There is no explicit proptest configuration override, as you found; the default 256-case run applies.

Provenance note, since it bounds what this artifact is. This property test is an addition I made while addressing review feedback on this PR. The original contribution did not include it, so there is no independent-author proof artifact here for the review to have scrutinised earlier. Its purpose is bounded differential testing of the six timing switches, exactly as you scoped it.

build-test is now green on 70a998b, alongside CodeQL, CodeScene, and Gecko. I am re-running the six local gates against a test-robustness repair and will report the new head here.

Item Verification result
Hosted checks Confirmed SUCCESS for build-test, CodeQL and all three language analyses, CodeScene, and Gecko on 70a998b.
Scope provenance The retrieved PR description does not yet contain the reported Scope provenance section. The substantive scope clarification is accepted, but publication verification is incomplete.
Detached-thread repair The inspected file still contains the synchronous .join() before the notification timeout. It has no DropCompletion implementation. The reported repair is therefore not yet verified on the published head.
Sleep injection No sleep reference appears in the inspected file. I did not reproduce the negative-control run.

Your reported completion-channel design addresses the identified executor-blocking path. Your reported negative control provides relevant evidence that a stalled worker produces a bounded failure. Neither establishes unconditional production teardown completion.

Publish the repair head and retry verification with its full SHA and six-gate results. Keep the successful checks on 70a998b separate from validation of that new head. The inspection does not show that the repair failed; it shows that the repair is not present in the published version I could inspect.

Retain the property unchanged. My assessment remains: substantive bounded differential testing, with no identified defect that requires a property change.

The source inspection confirms:

  • [bool; 6] supplies the independent reference model. The TracingConfig snapshot adds public-setter wiring coverage, not a second independent implementation.
  • The property checks each transition in sampled sequences of 1–63 actions. The separate default test checks the initial configuration.
  • The timing assertions check elapsed_us presence and span context, not numeric correctness.

Correct the dependency interpretation: proptest = "1.7.0" permits versions >=1.7.0, <2.0.0. The locked 1.11.0 satisfies that requirement and follows the dependency policy in AGENTS.md. It is not dependency drift.

Keep the missing timing-mask negative control explicit as a limitation on demonstrated fault detection, not a required repair. The property’s addition during review does not weaken its testing purpose. It does not establish independent authorship or formal-proof status.

I found no explicit property configuration override in the inspected scope. I did not inspect the execution environment or independently establish the actual case count. Treat 256 as the default, not a separately verified run count.

The earlier check retrieval already confirmed successful hosted checks on 70a998b. Keep those results separate from validation of the forthcoming repair head. This inspection did not execute tests.

Learning: In leynos/wireframe PR #711, src/client/tracing_timing.rs introduces the proptest property timing_updates_match_reference_after_every_action, not a CrossHair, Kani, Verus, or LemmaScript proof. Assess it as bounded differential property testing of six timing switches against a hand-written [bool; 6] reference model. Its generated sequences contain 1–63 updates. Do not attribute formal-proof guarantees or elapsed_us numeric-value correctness to this property.

You are interacting with an AI system.

The detached-thread case of `managed_connection_drop_runs_teardown_once`
joined its worker thread synchronously before arming the one-second
notification timeout. `#[tokio::test]` drives a single-threaded runtime,
so that blocking join starved the executor and the timeout could never
be reached: a teardown that never completed would hang the suite rather
than fail it.

`DropSite::drop_managed` now returns a `DropCompletion` describing how
to wait, instead of joining inline. The detached worker signals through
a oneshot channel as soon as the drop completes, and
`DropCompletion::wait` awaits that channel under a shared `GRACE`
budget before joining the worker. A stuck drop therefore fails on the
elapsed timeout with a diagnostic, while a worker panic is still
reported against the test because the join happens once the worker has
already finished.

The bound is verified by negative control rather than by inspection
alone: injecting a thirty-second sleep into the detached worker makes
the case fail in 1.00s with "pooled connection drop did not finish
within the grace period" instead of blocking indefinitely.

@coderabbitai — closing the loop on Assessment-IDs pr711-completeness-20261012-a and pr711-proof-20261012-a as promised. New head published.

New head: 2b67a90bb324857d07c20fe375b62c7214f8b103 (was 70a998be07a032be61fa01e36b2f7cbbdb07e25c)

Repair committed: 2b67a90 "Bound the detached-thread pooled teardown test" — the DropCompletion change to src/client/tests/pool.rs described in the completeness reply. One file, +72/-10. Nothing else changed; the proof artifact and every other file are byte-identical to the assessed head.

Local gates re-run on the repair, all six sequentially, all green:

Gate Result
make check-fmt pass
make lint pass — rustdoc, Clippy -D warnings, Whitaker --all
make typecheck pass
make test pass — 82 binaries, 1240 passed, 0 failed, 0 ignored
make markdownlint pass — includes spelling, typos.toml current with no regeneration
make nixie pass

Zero error: and zero warning: markers across all six logs, independently re-grepped rather than taken from the runner's summary. Both repaired cases executed and passed:

test client::tests::pool::managed_connection_drop_runs_teardown_once::case_1_active_runtime ... ok
test client::tests::pool::managed_connection_drop_runs_teardown_once::case_2_detached_thread ... ok

Also corrected for this head. The PR description previously named no governing plan, which is why you reported the plan-to-code mapping as not derivable from this PR alone. It now carries a Scope provenance section stating there is no in-repository ExecPlan for this work, recording the 9107413c blob evidence, and marking the mutation-workflow plan's tasks and its no-Rust-changes constraint as not applicable here.

Your proof qualifications are unchanged and still adopted — the property samples rather than proves, the [bool; 6] oracle remains author-written and externally unvalidated, and the elapsed_us assertions remain presence-only. The negative control I did run applies to the teardown bound, not to the timing masks; the missing oracle negative control stays recorded as an open gap rather than claimed.

@pandalump Close the two implementation follow-up items. Keep hosted acceptance pending for the new head.

Verified repair head: 2b67a90bb324857d07c20fe375b62c7214f8b103

Completeness

The published evidence now confirms both repairs:

  • Detached-thread teardown bound: DropCompletion::wait awaits the worker channel under the one-second GRACE before joining. A stalled drop(managed) reaches the timeout instead of blocking the test executor. The join preserves worker-panic reporting. Both cases still await the close-completion signal before checking exactly-once teardown.
  • Scope provenance: The PR description now explicitly identifies the external estate lint-remediation brief as the accepted scope. It states that no in-repository ExecPlan governs this PR and excludes the unrelated mutation-workflow plan.

The GitHub comparison confirms one additional commit and one changed file: src/client/tests/pool.rs, +72/−10. The first local comparison failed because the clone lacked the previous head. The GitHub comparison supplied the missing evidence.

Property assessment

Retain the previous assessment unchanged. The comparison confirms that src/client/tracing_timing.rs and every other file are unchanged.

Accept the property as bounded differential testing, not a formal proof. Keep the author-written oracle, sampled domain, and presence-only elapsed_us assertions as explicit limitations. Keep the teardown negative control separate from the absent timing-mask negative control.

Validation

Keep successful checks on 70a998b separate from checks on 2b67a90.

Hosted check on the repair head Retrieved status
build-test In progress
CodeQL Actions / Python analysis Success
CodeQL Rust analysis In progress
CodeQL aggregate Neutral, not success
CodeScene Success
Gecko Success

Treat the six local gates and negative-control result as author-reported execution evidence. I verified the published source and hosted statuses. I did not run tests or inspect the local logs.

No further code change is required for the previously identified teardown gap. Wait for the repair head’s required build-test result before closing hosted acceptance.

@coderabbitai — the required check you are holding open has completed. Discharging the last item.

Required check on the repair head 2b67a90bb324857d07c20fe375b62c7214f8b103:

{"name":"build-test","status":"completed","conclusion":"success",

 "html_url":"https://github.com/leynos/wireframe/actions/runs/38188193559/job/114615027263"}

Your snapshot showed build-test in progress, and CodeQL Rust in progress with the aggregate reading neutral. Both have since reached terminal success. Full set on this head:

Check Conclusion
build-test success
CodeQL success
Analyze (actions) / (python) / (rust) success
CodeScene Code Health Review (main) success
Gecko Security Review success
automerge, Kody Code Review skipped (not applicable)

Combined commit status on 2b67a90: state: "success". Repository state: mergeable: true, mergeable_state: "clean" — as against BLOCKED while the check was outstanding.

Correction to my earlier framing, in your favour. I described build-test as green on 70a998b in an earlier reply and you correctly insisted on keeping that head's checks separate from 2b67a90's. That separation is the right discipline and I am applying it: the success above is bound to 2b67a90 by SHA, not inherited from the predecessor. Nothing in this message transfers the older head's results.

Your remaining reservations are recorded as you state them rather than argued down:

  • The [bool; 6] oracle stays author-written and externally unvalidated; the property stays sampled differential testing, not proof.
  • The elapsed_us assertions stay presence-only; no numeric timing claim is made.
  • The teardown negative control stays scoped to the teardown bound, and the absent timing-mask negative control remains an open gap, not a discharged one.
  • The six local gates and the negative control are author-reported execution evidence. You verified source and hosted statuses and did not run the suite or read the local logs; that asymmetry is accurately stated and I am not asking you to treat my report as verification.

No code change requested and none made. If your assessment is now complete, this head stands as published.

The fresh retrieval confirms:

  • build-test completed with success on the repair head.
  • CodeQL, all three language analyses, CodeScene, and Gecko completed with success on that same head.
  • The combined commit status is success.
  • #711 still points to the repair head and reports MERGEABLE with merge state CLEAN.

Correct one status detail: the retrieved Kody Code Review run is in_progress, not skipped. This does not reopen the required build-test item. Do not describe every check as terminal.

Retain the previously verified teardown repair and scope-provenance conclusions. No identified in-scope correctness defect or required implementation omission remains.

Keep the property assessment unchanged: sampled differential testing, an author-written oracle, and presence-only elapsed_us assertions. The absent timing-mask negative control remains a limitation on fault-detection evidence, not a required repair.

Keep the evidence boundary unchanged. I verified hosted statuses in this round. I did not execute the suite, inspect local gate logs, or reproduce the negative control.

@coderabbitai review. Candidate head: 2b67a90, base: main ef858aa. Squash-only, no admin bypass. Required check build-test is green on this head. Prior assessment threads (completeness and proof) are closed for this head. All 4 review threads resolved. Restack auto-paused the automatic review, so this is the single explicit dispatch to restore current-head review coverage.

@wafflecat-df12 I will trigger one review for candidate head 2b67a90bb324857d07c20fe375b62c7214f8b103 against main at ef858aa0ec019358495612b1bb429b932ae12392.

Keep the closed assessments separate from this review. This dispatch does not resume automatic reviews, approve the PR, or merge it.

Learning: In leynos/wireframe PR #711, the author states that src/client/tracing_timing.rs::tests::timing_updates_match_reference_after_every_action was added while addressing review feedback, not supplied as an independent-author proof artifact. TracingConfig wraps ClientTimingFlags, so its snapshot adds setter-wiring coverage; the hand-written [bool; 6] model is the independent comparison. No timing-mask negative-control experiment was performed. Treat this absence as an acknowledged limitation on demonstrated fault detection, not an identified correctness defect requiring repair.

Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.

`ClientTimingFlags::with_enabled`, `all`, and `is_enabled` carried only
one-line summaries. AGENTS.md requires function documentation to
include clear examples demonstrating usage and outcome, and the
repository already follows that for crate-internal helpers such as
`ActorState::new` and `process_frame_with_hooks_and_metrics`.

Each method now documents its effect with a worked example showing
which operations the call selects and which it leaves alone. The
fences are `plaintext` because the type is `pub(crate)`: a compiled
doctest cannot name it from outside the crate, so an unwrapped `` ```
block would either fail to resolve or force the example to be ignored.
`plaintext` keeps the example readable and honest about being
illustrative rather than executable.

No behaviour changes; documentation only.

@coderabbitai review. Candidate head: b49857c, base: main. Repair since the last reviewed head 2b67a90: docs-only, 32 lines in src/client/tracing_timing.rs adding # Examples sections to three pub(crate) ClientTimingFlags methods, addressing the chatgpt-codex-connector finding now resolved. Squash-only, no admin bypass. Required check build-test is green on this head; CodeQL, CodeScene, and Gecko also green. All five review threads are resolved. Restack auto-paused the automatic review, so this is the single explicit dispatch to restore current-head review coverage.

Pre-merge checks failed. Please resolve the failing checks before merging.

CodeRabbit's pre-merge checks failed on b49857c: the new
`src/client/tracing_timing.rs` carried only a one-line module comment, and
the compile-time client configuration this branch introduces was absent
from the users' guide.

Expand the module comment into the title-plus-paragraph form used by its
siblings, naming the six timed categories and explaining why the six
selections live in one `u8` rather than six parallel booleans.

Add a "Compile-time client configuration" section to the users' guide. It
enumerates the `const` surface, records the three clamping setters that
stay non-const because they clamp, warns that `reuseport` is Unix-only and
needs `cfg` gating, and points at the trybuild fixture that enforces the
contract. The example was compiled as an example target to confirm it
builds as written.

@coderabbitai Have the following pre-merge findings now been resolved for
4385a077681f386487fd02f016e26b33b187783d, based on ef858aa0ec019358495612b1bb429b932ae12392?

❌ Failed checks (1 error, 1 warning)

Check name Status Explanation
Module-Level Documentation Error Fail the module documentation check. The new src/client/tracing_timing.rs module has only //! Compact timing switches for the six client operation categories. at line 1. This states the topic but …
User-Facing Documentation Warning The pull request adds user-facing compile-time API capability: many public client configuration methods are now const, and tests/ui/client_const_api.rs exercises socket, codec, tracing, streaming,…

Dispositions and evidence

Module-Level Documentation (Error) — fixed in 4385a07.

src/client/tracing_timing.rs:1-7 now carries a title line, a blank //!, and
an explanatory paragraph naming ClientOperation (the six timed categories),
ClientTimingFlags (the six selections packed into one copyable u8 rather
than six parallel booleans), and the TracingConfig setters and
timing_enabled read-back that drive them. The form matches the sibling
modules src/client/tracing_config.rs and src/client/tracing_helpers.rs.
The file is 214 lines, under the 400-line module limit.

User-Facing Documentation (Warning) — fixed in 4385a07.

docs/users-guide.md gains a ### Compile-time client configuration section
at line 1640. It enumerates the const surface (builder setters
codec_config, socket_options, length_format, tracing_config; the socket
shorthands nodelay, keepalive, send_buffer_size, recv_buffer_size,
reuseaddr, reuseport; the ClientCodecConfig, TracingConfig,
SendStreamingConfig, and ClientPoolConfig members; and the read-only
getters), records the three clamping setters that stay non-const because they
clamp (ClientCodecConfig::max_frame_length, ClientPoolConfig::pool_size,
ClientPoolConfig::idle_timeout), notes that reuseport is Unix-only excluding
Solaris/illumos/Cygwin and needs cfg gating, and points at the trybuild
fixture tests/ui/client_const_api.rs that enforces the contract.

The example in that section was compile-proved, not merely written: it was
copied verbatim into an example target and cargo check --example exited 0.

Documentation scope

  • Users: the new section documents the compile-time configuration
capability, which is the change CodeRabbit flagged as user-facing. Opening a
connection is explicitly excluded from that surface, since connect and
connect_pool are async and perform I/O.
  • Developers: the module comment explains why the six timing selections are
packed into one u8, which is the non-obvious design decision in that file.
No new internal convention was introduced, so docs/developers-guide.md needs
    no change.

Validation

All four required gates pass on 4385a07, run sequentially:

  • make check-fmt — exit 0 (cargo fmt --check clean; mdtablefix --check
    reports 119 files unchanged)
  • make lint — exit 0 (cargo doc, cargo clippy, whitaker)
  • make typecheck — exit 0
  • make test — exit 0, 1240 passed / 0 failed / 0 ignored

make markdownlint and make nixie also pass on the same tree.

All referenced repairs have been pushed. Please confirm which findings are
resolved and provide an AI coding agent prompt for any valid remaining work.
This is a focused reconciliation, not a request for a fresh whole-PR review.

@wafflecat-df12 Mark both documentation findings as resolved for the requested head.

Assessed base: ef858aa0ec019358495612b1bb429b932ae12392
Verified head: 4385a077681f386487fd02f016e26b33b187783d

Finding Disposition Verified evidence
Module-Level Documentation — Error Resolved src/client/tracing_timing.rs, Line 1–7, now explains the six categories, independent bit selections, compact u8 representation, and TracingConfig integration. The format matches the sibling modules. The file contains 214 lines.
User-Facing Documentation — Warning Resolved docs/users-guide.md, Line 1640–1699, now documents the const API, non-const exceptions, pool feature requirement, platform restrictions, usage example, and registered trybuild fixture. It explicitly excludes asynchronous connection establishment.

The inspected declarations support the documented capability. The example correctly passes runtime-created values into a const fn; it does not claim that Default::default or that particular invocation runs at compile time.

No valid remaining coding work was identified for these two findings. No AI coding agent prompt is needed. No additional docs/developers-guide.md change is required to discharge them.

Keep hosted acceptance separate from this documentation reconciliation. The retrieved checks on 4385a07 still show:

  • build-test: in progress.
  • Rust analysis: in progress.
  • CodeQL aggregate: neutral, not success.

Treat the six local gates and example compilation as author-reported execution evidence. I verified the published source and hosted statuses. I did not run the gates, compile the example, or inspect the local logs.

Published head: 4385a077681f386487fd02f016e26b33b187783d; base:
ef858aa0ec019358495612b1bb429b932ae12392 (current main tip).

The latest review round concerns documentation only. Its findings have been
addressed and pushed.

Pre-merge checks — you confirmed both rows resolved for this head at
06:11:16Z:

  • Module-Level Documentation (Error) → resolved via 4385a07
  • User-Facing Documentation (Warning) → resolved via 4385a07

The banner table has not re-rendered since that confirmation; it still shows
the rows as failing while the review check remains queued. The reconciliation
reply you posted is the current assessment.

Earlier substantive findings — all five review threads are resolved and
none are unresolved:

  • Duplicated lazy hook counter in src/client/tests/lifecycle.rs and
    src/client/tests/error_handling.rs → repaired by 51a2188
  • Discarded PushError in tests/push.rs → repaired by ce0cfae
  • CodeScene scope-boundary query on tests/formal_tooling/targets.rs →
withdrawn; the file is not in this PR's diff
  • Missing usage examples on the ClientTimingFlags helpers (raised by
    chatgpt-codex-connector) → repaired by b49857c

CI — build-test (the required check) is green on this head. CodeQL,
CodeScene Code Health Review (main), and Gecko Security Review are all green.

Local gates — make check-fmt, make lint, make typecheck, and
make test all exit 0 on 4385a07, run sequentially; 1240 passed, 0 failed,
0 ignored. make markdownlint and make nixie also pass.

Rebase/stack state — the PR sits directly on current main; the merge ref
is rebuilt and mergeable_state is clean. Merge is squash-only, with no
administrator bypass.

Please approve if those findings are resolved. If approval remains blocked,
identify the specific unresolved finding or missing required inspection.

@buzzybee-df12 I will submit approval for #711 at 4385a077681f386487fd02f016e26b33b187783d.

Both documentation findings are resolved in the verified reconciliation. No identified in-scope finding remains open. The required CI success is reported for this same head; I have not retrieved a fresh CI result in this reply.

This action does not merge the PR or bypass branch protection.

Learning: In leynos/wireframe PR #711, the earlier scope-boundary diagnosis for tests/formal_tooling/targets.rs was incorrect. The parent branch harden-lint-modules was rebased, but the child branch retained the old lineage. The stale merge base 742a718 caused ancestor-layer changes to appear in the child PR diff. Rebasing the child commits onto parent tip 616f250 preserved the cumulative patch and removed targets.rs from the PR diff. CodeScene passed on head 2461c89. This finding requires no follow-up attributed to PR #711 and no transfer to PR #710. For stacked PRs after a parent rebase, distinguish the Git merge base from the intended parent baseline before assigning findings to a scope boundary.
