Summary

Enforces FirstFrameHeader::total_body_len as an authoritative protocol
commitment during message assembly, closing the validation gap described in
#544.

Previously the declared total was only an input to the configured size
limit. The completion path removed the partial assembly and dispatched the
accumulated body without comparing its length to the declaration, and a
single-frame message returned before any comparison at all. A peer could
therefore declare a total that passed the size check, send a different
number of bytes, and have the body dispatched unchanged.

Closes #544.

Changes

Message assembly now enforces the declaration at four points, all in domain
code (src/message_assembler/):

  • First frame: a declaration smaller than the first frame's own body is
    rejected as unsatisfiable (DeclaredTotalTooSmall).
  • First frame that is also the last: its body must equal the
    declaration exactly (DeclaredTotalMismatch).
  • Continuation: a frame that would push the accumulated body past the
    declaration is rejected before its bytes are buffered
    (DeclaredTotalExceeded).
  • Completing frame: the accumulated body must equal the declaration
    exactly (DeclaredTotalMismatch).

Any rejection also frees the partial assembly. Protocols that leave
total_body_len as None keep the previous behaviour.

Supporting changes:

  • Three new MessageAssemblyError variants, documented and matched in the
    test kit and assertion helpers. The enum is not #[non_exhaustive], so
    this is a breaking change for downstream exhaustive matches; recorded in
    CHANGELOG.md.
  • Validation split into a pure validation module so the state machine
    stays within its size budget, with in-flight state in partial.rs.
  • Unit regression tests for under-declared single-frame totals,
    over-declared single-frame totals, an over-declared continuation, a final
    frame short of the declaration, exact equality, the None opt-out, and
    overflow.
  • Behavioural scenarios in tests/features/message_assembly.feature
    covering the same paths through the public API.
  • Inbound-adapter tests confirming rejection maps to InvalidData, counts a
    deserialization failure, and dispatches nothing.
  • ADR 015 records the decision (authoritative, Position A), with the
    users' guide, formal-verification guide, roadmap and contents index
    updated to match.

Summary by Sourcery

Enforce declared total body lengths as authoritative protocol commitments during message assembly.

Bug Fixes:

  • Enforce declared total body lengths throughout message assembly so under-declared, over-declared, and incomplete messages are rejected instead of being dispatched.

Enhancements:

  • Add typed assembly errors for unsatisfiable, exceeded, and mismatched declared totals while preserving opt-out behavior when no total is declared.
  • Reject invalid continuations before buffering and free partial assemblies after declared-total failures.
  • Record the authoritative declared-length contract and migration impact in the changelog, architectural documentation, and user guidance.

Documentation:

  • Document the authoritative total-body-length contract and mark the related roadmap and verification work complete.

Tests:

  • Add unit, behavioral, inbound-adapter, and overflow regression coverage for declared-total validation and exact successful assembly.

`FirstFrameHeader::total_body_len` was only used as an input to the
configured size check. The completion path removed the partial assembly
and dispatched its body without comparing the accumulated length to the
declaration, and a single-frame message returned before any comparison.
A peer could therefore declare any total that passed the size check, send
a different number of bytes, and have the body dispatched unchanged.

Treat the declaration as authoritative and enforce it at four points:

- a first frame whose body exceeds its declaration is rejected with
  `DeclaredTotalTooSmall`, because the declaration can never be
  satisfied;
- a single-frame message must match its declaration exactly, or
  `DeclaredTotalMismatch` is returned;
- a continuation that would push the body past the declaration is
  rejected with `DeclaredTotalExceeded` before its bytes are buffered;
  and
- the completing frame must bring the body to exactly the declared
  total, or `DeclaredTotalMismatch` is returned.

Rejections free the partial assembly, so a mismatched message never
stays buffered. Protocols that leave the total as `None` are unaffected.

To keep `state.rs` within its 400-line limit, the in-flight state moves
to `partial.rs` (which owns the completion check) and the pure
predicates to `validation.rs`. The inbound adapter already maps
`MessageAssemblyError` to `io::ErrorKind::InvalidData`, so no adapter
change is required.

Closes #544.

Cover every enforcement point from issue #544 directly against the
domain state machine:

- an under-declared single-frame total;
- an over-declared single-frame total;
- a first frame that carries more than a multi-frame declaration;
- a continuation that would overshoot the declaration;
- a final frame short of the declaration;
- exact single-frame and multi-frame declarations;
- a non-final frame that exactly reaches the declaration;
- the `None` opt-out; and
- overflow when accumulating the attempted length.

The inbound adapter tests prove that a rejection is reported as
`InvalidData` through the deserialization-failure counter and that the
partial assembly is freed, so a malformed message is never dispatched.

The testkit expectation enum and the budget assertion helper gain the
three new variants so exhaustive matches keep compiling.

Exercise the declared-total contract through the public API: an
under-declared and an over-declared single-frame total, a continuation
that overshoots the declaration, a final frame that falls short, and an
exactly declared multi-frame message that completes.

The world fixture gains a `total_body_len` field on `FirstFrameParams`
with a `with_total` builder, and the first frame now forwards it to
`FirstFrameHeader` instead of always sending `None`.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Add ADR 015, which records the decision to treat
`FirstFrameHeader::total_body_len` as a protocol commitment rather than
an advisory hint, compares that against renaming the field or checking
only at completion, and lists the four enforcement points.

Update the formal-verification guide to resolve its open question in
favour of Position A, tick roadmap items 15.2.2 and 15.5.1, describe the
new errors in the users' guide, and note the breaking change in the
changelog.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Clippy rejected `PartialAssembly::new` (five arguments) and the
`admit_continuation` helper (six) under `too_many_arguments`. Rather
than suppress the lint, reduce the parameter lists:

- `PartialAssembly::from_first_frame` takes the already-validated
  `FirstFrameInput`, which carries the header, routing, metadata, and
  body it previously received separately.
- The per-message size cap and aggregate budgets move into
  `ContinuationLimits`, so a caller cannot pair the cap with the wrong
  budgets.
- The admission checks move onto `PartialAssembly`, next to the
  accumulated body and declared total they read.

The style guide asks an accepted ADR's status section to summarise what
was decided, not only point at the implementing issue. State the
contract in the status block so a reader can tell what was accepted
without reading the whole record.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
The declared-total tests' continuation helper took five arguments, which
trips `clippy::too_many_arguments` under the repository's four-argument
threshold. Group the frame parameters into a named `Continuation` struct,
matching the guidance to bundle related parameters, and update every call
site.

Derive `Copy` on the struct so the helper can keep taking it by value
without a `needless_pass_by_value` lint.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
`subject` carried `#[fixture]` but every test called it directly, so the
attribute had no effect. Take the state through `#[from(subject)]`
instead, which builds a fresh manager per test through the fixture.

Merge the three first-frame rejection tests into a single case table:
they shared one body and one set of post-conditions, differing only in
the declaration, the final-frame flag, and the expected error. The
parameterised name records each distinct semantic case.

Addresses the two trivial CodeRabbit findings on the declared-total
tests.

Summary

  • Enforce FirstFrameHeader::total_body_len when it is present. Reject first frames that exceed the declaration, continuations that would exceed it, and completed messages whose body length does not match it. Remove rejected partial assemblies. Preserve existing behaviour when the declaration is None.
  • Add three MessageAssemblyError variants for declared-total violations. Document the exhaustive-match impact in CHANGELOG.md.
  • Add unit, behavioural, and inbound-adapter regression tests. Document the decision in ADR 015, and update the user guide and roadmap.

Verification

The author reports that formatting, lint, type-check, test, documentation, Markdown, Nixie, and spelling checks passed. The author also reports a clean CodeRabbit review at edd55a4, with no findings.

Walkthrough

The assembler now enforces total_body_len when it is present. It rejects oversized first frames, continuations that exceed the declaration, and completed messages with a different length. The change adds three assembly errors, regression tests, and documentation of the contract.

Explanation

Issue #544 requires enforcement of declared totals at first-frame, continuation, and completion boundaries, explicit errors, and regression tests. validation.rs rejects unsatisfiable first frames, continuation overshoots, and completion mismatches. partial.rs validates before buffering and on completion. state.rs frees failed assemblies. The tests cover single-frame mismatches, continuation overshoot, final under-length, exact totals, None, and overflow. Satisfy the linked coding requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Keep the changes within issue #544. The new error variants, validation split, test-kit updates, inbound-adapter tests, behavioural scenarios, changelog, ADR, and user documentation directly support the declared-total contract or its compatibility impact. No unrelated implementation change is established.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 98.28% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 58 functions across 17 files. (7 skipped: 7 unsupported.)

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

The new tests substantively guard the declared-total behaviour. src/message_assembler/declared_total_tests.rs:94-326 exercises unsatisfiable first frames, single-frame mismatch, continuation overshoot, completion mismatch, exact single- and multi-frame totals, the None opt-out, assembly removal, and accumulation overflow. Assertions check exact MessageAssemblyError variants and lengths, message bodies, and buffered state. The BDD scenarios are wired in tests/scenarios/message_assembly_scenarios.rs:72-108; the fixture passes total_body_len through to the protocol header in tests/fixtures/message_assembly.rs:136-148, and the steps assert errors, completion bodies, and an empty buffer. The inbound tests in src/app/frame_handling/assembly_tests/declared_total.rs:21-109 also verify no dispatch, one deserialisation failure, and removal after a continuation rejection. These tests would fail if the new validation were removed or bypassed.

Full details: Module-Level Documentation

Explanation

All Rust modules changed by this pull request have module-level //! documentation. The new modules describe their purpose and role: src/message_assembler/partial.rs:1-9, src/message_assembler/validation.rs:1-23, and src/message_assembler/declared_total_tests.rs:1-6. Existing module documentation remains present in src/message_assembler/mod.rs:1-21, src/message_assembler/budget.rs:1-6, src/message_assembler/state.rs:1-5, and the inbound test and testkit modules. The documentation explains the module function and its relationship to adjacent components where needed.

Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)

Explanation

Pass the testing check. Unit tests cover first-frame under-declaration, single-frame mismatch and equality, continuation overshoot, completion mismatch, exact multi-frame completion, the None opt-out, boundary exhaustion, cleanup, and usize overflow in src/message_assembler/declared_total_tests.rs:206-449. The tests assert error variants, lengths, dispatched bodies, and buffered-state invariants, and they are registered in src/message_assembler/tests.rs:211-215. Behavioural scenarios drive MessageAssemblyState through the MessageAssemblyWorld frame API and assert rejection, buffer removal, and exact completion in tests/features/message_assembly.feature:72-104 and tests/fixtures/message_assembly.rs:136-177,210-237. The inbound adapter tests send encoded frame payloads through assemble_if_needed, then verify no dispatch, one deserialisation failure, and assembly cleanup in src/app/frame_handling/assembly_tests/declared_total.rs:22-109. The adapter maps assembly errors to InvalidData at src/app/frame_handling/assembly.rs:241-247,270-276. This provides meaningful unit, behavioural, and integration-boundary coverage for the changed workflow.

Full details: Unit Architecture

Explanation

The change preserves the architecture boundaries. validation.rs:27-125 contains pure, explicit Result validators. MessageAssemblyState::accept_* remains the command boundary and mutates only assembly state; PartialAssembly::admit_continuation performs related admission checks before push_body, and into_message makes completion validation fallible. Query methods such as total_buffered_bytes and buffered_count only read state. Time is injectable through the existing accept_*_at and purge_expired_at APIs, while PartialAssembly::from_first_frame receives started_at explicitly. The added unit, adapter, and BDD tests cover pure validation, state mutation and the public boundary without hidden clients or side-effects.

Full details: Domain Architecture

Explanation

Keep the change within the domain boundary. validation.rs contains pure declared-total rules and returns domain-level MessageAssemblyError variants. PartialAssembly and MessageAssemblyState apply those rules to domain assembly state without HTTP, storage, framework, or vendor dependencies. The inbound adapter remains responsible for translating domain errors to io::ErrorKind::InvalidData in src/app/frame_handling/assembly.rs:241-275. The added tests use the domain API and separately verify the adapter mapping. No explicit Domain Architecture failure is introduced.

Full details: Observability

Explanation

PASS — The new declared-total rejection paths use the existing inbound failure boundary. process_first_frame and process_continuation_frame pass MessageAssemblyError details to DeserFailureTracker (src/app/frame_handling/assembly.rs:241-275). The tracker emits warning logs with the operation context, correlation_id, and error details, then increments the bounded deserialization error metric and enforces the failure threshold (src/app/frame_handling/core.rs:27-47). The new errors include stable message keys and declared/actual lengths (src/message_assembler/error.rs:133-177). The added adapter tests verify failure counting, no dispatch, and assembly removal. No new process or service boundary requires tracing, and no new alert is needed for this expected protocol rejection.

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

Document the behaviour clearly in docs/users-guide.md at lines 1263-1284, including the authoritative declaration, rejection cases, None opt-out, and ADR link. However, this breaking change is not signposted in the existing n+1 migration guide. CHANGELOG.md lines 14-24 identifies new MessageAssemblyError variants and breaking exhaustive-match impact, while docs/v0-3-0-to-v0-4-0-migration-guide.md contains no declared-total section. The pull request does not change that migration guide.

Resolution

Add a section to docs/v0-3-0-to-v0-4-0-migration-guide.md. Explain that exact total_body_len values are required, None preserves the old behaviour, mismatched messages are rejected, and downstream exhaustive matches on MessageAssemblyError must handle DeclaredTotalTooSmall, DeclaredTotalExceeded, and DeclaredTotalMismatch. Include a short before-and-after code example where useful.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

The pull request changes the message-assembler architecture by adding private validation.rs and partial.rs modules, moving completion ownership to PartialAssembly, and adding the ContinuationLimits abstraction in budget.rs (diff evidence). ADR 015 documents the contract and module boundary at lines 72-125, and the user guide documents the public behaviour at lines 1263-1287. However, docs/developers-guide.md is unchanged and its message-assembly section only documents sequence validation at lines 480-503. It does not document the new declared-total boundary or the new internal abstractions. No new execplan was added, and the roadmap items are checked off.

Resolution

Update docs/developers-guide.md with a message-assembly architecture subsection. Document that total_body_len is authoritative, list the first-frame, continuation, and completion checks and their MessageAssemblyError variants, state that rejected continuations and completions remove partial state, and describe the responsibilities of validation.rs, partial.rs, state.rs, and budget.rs (ContinuationLimits). Link the section to ADR 015 and retain the existing roadmap and user-guide references.

Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)

Explanation

The change introduces a length invariant across arbitrary usize values and continuation transitions, but it adds only example-based rstest cases. src/message_assembler/validation.rs:78-100 must preserve the declared-total bound, including addition overflow, for every accumulated and frame length. The new tests cover selected values and one overflow boundary in src/message_assembler/declared_total_tests.rs:78-336, but they do not generate arbitrary totals, frame lengths, or valid/invalid partitions. The repository already uses proptest as a dev-dependency (Cargo.toml:60-70) and in message-series tests, so property testing is available and established.

Resolution

Add a substantive proptest suite for the declared-total validators or the full assembly flow. Generate arbitrary declared totals and accumulated/body lengths, including near-usize::MAX values, and assert that checked addition rejects overflow, values above the declaration reject, values within the declaration accept, and completion accepts exactly the declaration while rejecting both shorter and longer bodies. Generate multi-frame partitions whose sum is below, equal to, or above the declaration, and assert that no overshooting frame is buffered and that only an exact final total dispatches. Keep the existing named regression cases for protocol-specific error variants and assembly cleanup.

Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)

Explanation

The pull request introduces compile-time API behaviour. It adds three variants to public MessageAssemblyError (src/message_assembler/error.rs:85-177) and re-exports that enum (src/message_assembler/mod.rs:34), so downstream exhaustive matches now fail to compile. The repository already uses trybuild (Cargo.toml:83, tests/compile_error.rs:6-18) and has an exhaustive-match UI test for another public error enum. The pull request adds no tests/ui fixture or tests/compile_error.rs entry for MessageAssemblyError; its new tests only assert runtime enum values. The required compile-time coverage is therefore missing.

Resolution

Add a trybuild compile_fail fixture that imports MessageAssemblyError and exhaustively matches the pre-change variants, add its checked .stderr expectation, and register it in tests/compile_error.rs. Keep the runtime tests for declared-total behaviour. Add a focused snapshot only if the public error text is treated as a stable UI contract; otherwise retain semantic assertions rather than snapshotting incidental formatting.

Assessment against linked issues

Issue Objective Addressed Explanation
#544 Enforce a supplied total_body_len against the actual assembled body so under-declared or mismatched messages are rejected rather than dispatched. ✅
#544 Reject impossible or overshooting declarations before buffering excess continuation data, and free partial assembly state on rejection. ✅
#544 Add regression coverage for single-frame and multi-frame length mismatches, while preserving behavior when no total is declared. ✅

The decision outcome lists the four enforcement points as a table and
bullets, which describes each check in isolation but does not show how
they order around buffering and dispatch. Add a flowchart tracing a
first frame through its declaration check, continuations through
admission, and the completed message through the final comparison, with
each rejection feeding the shared "free partial assembly" terminal.

The diagram is introduced by a screen-reader description and captioned
as Figure 1, per the documentation style guide.
