Scope

Source remediation for the byte-order, codec, frame-conversion,
message-assembler, middleware, request and response modules. Every
#[expect(clippy::...)] suppression in these files is replaced by source that
satisfies the eventual baseline directly: bytes::{Buf, BufMut} replaces
suppressed big- and little-endian conversions, u8/u16/u32::try_from replaces
suppressed narrowing casts, and accessors become const fn where the lint
will require it.

Key changes:

  • src/byte_order.rs: all six endian suppressions replaced with Buf/
BufMut operations; the over-complex boundary test is split and a proptest
    pins arbitrary-value round trips.
  • src/codec/error.rs: default_recovery_policy, is_clean_close and
error_type become const; the io::Error mapping is extracted into a
    documented private helper.
  • src/frame/conversion.rs: checked prefix encoding returning io::Result,
Buf::get_u64_le decoding, and a fit check separated from the write so the
    function clears Whitaker's bumpy_road_function.
  • src/message_assembler/state.rs is exactly 400 lines, the repository
module budget; src/request/mod.rs is 398 lines.

Position and dependencies

Layer 1 of 5 in the lint-source stack. This PR targets main; the four
layers above it are stacked on it and must merge in order.

Reviewer entrypoints

  • src/frame/conversion.rs — prefix encode/decode rewrite
  • src/codec/error.rs — const conversion and error mapping
  • src/byte_order.rs — endian suppression removal

Validation evidence (head 6036697)

This branch was restacked onto origin/main = b194531 on 2026-10-23, after
main moved three commits including #794's toolchain bump from
nightly-2026-03-26 to nightly-2026-10-22. The previous head 0b21663 and its
local gate results belong to the retired toolchain and are not current
evidence.

The weave merge driver was disabled for the replay
(-c core.attributesFile=/dev/null), and the replay was checked against a
driver-free merge-tree result rather than trusted.

Hosted, at this head. The build-test lane ran at this exact commit and
passed every step. It executes the repository's own targets, so its result is
per-layer evidence for the format and lint gates rather than a result inherited
from a neighbour:

Step Target or tool
Format make check-fmt
Lint make lint — rustdoc with -D warnings, Clippy with -D warnings, Whitaker --all
Lint Markdown markdownlint-cli2 over **/*.md
Spelling make spelling
Validate Mermaid diagrams make nixie
Workflow contract tests make test-workflow-contracts
Feature-gate compile checks make test-feature-gate
Test and Measure Coverage cargo llvm-cov nextest --workspace, default features and targets

https://github.com/leynos/wireframe/actions/runs/39959663343/job/120434166719

The instrumented run executed 1207 tests, 1207 passed, 0 skipped and
reported 87.80% against the committed 87.8% baseline, so the ratchet passed.
Read from the job log, not inferred from the job conclusion.

That run is narrower than the Make targets — no --all-targets, no
--all-features, no doctests — which is why the local runs below are still
required.

Local. Run sequentially at this exact head with make:

Known baseline failures

None observed at this head.

Deferred work

Final lint-configuration adoption, the strict-census residual findings, the
testkit argument-count decision and Whitaker --workspace coverage remain in
later layers.

Summary by Sourcery

Remove targeted lint suppressions by adopting checked conversions, buffer-based endian handling, and const APIs across shared protocol components.

Enhancements:

  • Replace lint suppressions across codec, framing, byte-order, assembler, middleware, request, and response code with compliant conversions and const-capable APIs.
  • Strengthen frame prefix validation and byte-order coverage while preserving the existing wire formats.

Tests:

  • Add boundary and property-based tests for network byte-order round trips and targeted little-endian decoding cases.

Summary

Replace lint suppressions in byte-order, codec, frame-conversion, message-assembler, middleware, request, and response code with checked conversions, buffer-based endian operations, and const fn declarations.

Add checked frame-prefix encoding that returns io::Result and rejects unsupported widths or values that exceed the configured width. Preserve the existing codec error mappings through a documented private helper. Rename PartialAssembly::body_buffer to body, and use Self in Response implementations.

Add boundary and property-based tests for byte-order conversions, plus fixed-width little-endian decoding tests.

Validation

The author reports that hosted validation at head 6036697 passed make check-fmt, make lint, and cargo llvm-cov nextest --workspace. The instrumented run passed 1,207 tests, skipped none, and reported 87.80% coverage against an 87.8% baseline.

The author reports that the run did not cover --all-targets, --all-features, or doctests. Local validation results were not provided.

Merge order

Treat this as layer 1 of a five-layer lint-source stack targeting main. Merge the four layers above it in order.

Walkthrough

The diff updates network-order conversion and frame-prefix validation. It also changes codec error handling and encoding, and declares several recovery, assembly, middleware, and request methods as const. Response code uses Self for enum variants without changing their behaviour.

Changes

Wireframe conversion and API updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Byte conversion and prefix validation
src/byte_order.rs, src/frame/conversion.rs
Network-order helpers use bytes buffer operations. Frame conversion validates prefix widths and values, propagates write errors, and adds decoding and round-trip tests.
Codec errors and frame encoding
src/codec/error.rs, src/codec/examples.rs
Codec error methods become const, and I/O error conversion delegates to a private method. Hotline and MySQL encoding use checked size conversions. Codec constructors become const.
Recovery and message assembly APIs
src/codec/recovery/*, src/message_assembler/*
Recovery builders and message assembly methods become const. Partial assembly uses the renamed body field when accumulating and completing messages.
Middleware, request, and response APIs
src/middleware.rs, src/request/mod.rs, src/response.rs
Middleware and request methods become const. Response code uses Self for variant references; variant behaviour remains unchanged.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Fix codec and shared source lint findings" matches the main change: the PR removes targeted Clippy suppressions across the codec, byte-order, frame-conversion, assembler, middleware, request and response modules by adding checked conversions and const APIs. It is somewhat broad, but it names the actual aspect of the change. The title-requirements rules for execplan prefixes, roadmap numbers and issue numbers do not apply because the PR has no execplan, no roadmap item and no referenced issue (#796 and #805 are stack references, not fixed issues).

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the scope, the key file-level changes (byte_order.rs, codec/error.rs, frame/conversion.rs, module budgets), stack position, reviewer entrypoints and validation evidence. It is directly related to the changeset, so it passes the lenient check.

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

PASS. The changed byte-order helpers are covered by fixed wire-byte assertions, zero and maximum boundaries, and arbitrary-value round trips in src/byte_order.rs lines 126–186. The frame conversion tests assert exact big- and little-endian encodings and decodings, plus rejection of out-of-range and unsupported prefixes in src/frame/tests.rs lines 9–20, 33–55 and 85–120. The new little-endian decoder test checks asymmetric, zero and maximum inputs in src/frame/conversion.rs lines 249–255. Existing codec integration tests exercise Hotline and MySQL encode/decode and oversized-payload rejection in tests/example_codecs.rs lines 19–41, 60–101. The remaining changes either preserve runtime behaviour or refactor equivalent code; the tests provide meaningful behavioural coverage and are not vacuous.

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

Treat this as a PASS. The PR changes source files only; it does not change docs/users-guide.md or other Markdown files. The reviewed changes retain the existing runtime behaviour: byte-order helpers preserve their wire formats, prefix conversion still checks size and representability, and CodecError retains its I/O mappings. The public const fn changes add const-context usability without changing runtime behaviour. The users' guide already documents the relevant codec error and recovery API (lines 701–756), RequestParts (lines 960–988), and middleware (lines 1365–1380). No new guide-level functionality or migration requirement is introduced.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

Pass. Keep the developer guide and design documents unchanged for this source-only lint remediation. The reviewed diff changes only source files; it adds no tooling or build requirement, architectural boundary, completed roadmap item, or execplan. The const fn changes preserve runtime behaviour, and the changed prefix conversion’s supported widths and error conditions are documented in its rustdoc (src/frame/conversion.rs:204-210). The guide already records the existing framing and codec boundaries (docs/developers-guide.md:233-275, 425-462).

Full details: Module-Level Documentation

Explanation

PASS. Treat the module-level documentation check as satisfied for this PR. src/byte_order.rs documents the conversion purpose and explains the fixed-size buffer utility (lines 1–4). The other changed modules retain their existing purpose documentation; the diff does not alter those module docstrings, and the code changes do not change the modules’ documented roles.

Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)

Explanation

PASS. Retain the existing behavioural coverage alongside the new conversion tests. src/byte_order.rs adds zero, maximum-value and arbitrary-value round-trip checks, while its existing cases assert known wire bytes. src/frame/tests.rs:9-55, 57-121 covers both endiannesses, valid widths, short input, unsupported widths and oversized values. tests/example_codecs.rs:19-100 exercises Hotline and MySQL encode/decode round trips and invalid-size errors; tests/example_codecs.rs:103-162 also exercises Hotline through an application connection. Existing tests cover the changed error mapping (src/codec/error_tests.rs:90-147), request accessors (src/request/tests.rs:7-59) and message assembly (src/message_assembler/state_tests.rs:35-372). The remaining edits change const eligibility or enum self-references without changing runtime behaviour, so they do not require separate end-to-end tests.

Full details: Unit Architecture

Explanation

The changes preserve clear boundaries. u64_to_bytes exposes validation failures through io::Result, and its checked prefix writes propagate errors (src/frame/conversion.rs:133-173, 212-237). CodecError query methods remain read-only; the conversion to io::Error is explicit (src/codec/error.rs:224-301, 315-317). Other changes add const to value constructors/accessors or use Self in existing Response conversions. The diff adds no hidden dependencies, ambient state, or new side-effects.

Full details: Domain Architecture

Explanation

The changed code keeps protocol and framework work at their existing boundaries. The codec and frame modules describe wire-protocol framing and encoding (src/codec/mod.rs:1–5; src/frame/mod.rs:1–4). The substantive conversion changes operate on wire bytes and report I/O errors; the other changes add const declarations, rename an internal buffer, or use Self for enum variants. The message-assembler changes do not alter assembly rules, and the request, response, and middleware edits do not introduce new transport, storage, or vendor dependencies. The diff shows no new domain policy or adapter concern leaking into a domain model.

Full details: Observability

Explanation

The pull request does not introduce a new operational failure mode that needs new logging, metrics or tracing. The frame conversion retains its existing checks for unsupported widths and oversized values (src/frame/conversion.rs:218-231); the new big-endian fit check protects the same values already validated by convert_len_to_value (src/frame/conversion.rs:112-126, 148-173). The MySQL u32::try_from follows the existing 24-bit payload limit, so it does not add a reachable failure case (src/codec/examples.rs, verified in the reviewed diff). The remaining changes make functions const, rename an internal field, or use Self; the byte-buffer operations preserve the fixed-width wire values. The extracted CodecError mapping keeps the existing error categories (src/codec/error.rs:297-316). No added operational signal is required for these changes.

Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)

Explanation

Add a property test for length-prefix conversion. The PR changes prefix encoding to check representability and encode values across supported widths and endianness (src/frame/conversion.rs:152-193, 212-237). The existing frame tests cover only selected values and one oversized value (src/frame/tests.rs:33-55, 85-120). The new arbitrary-value property test covers the separate network byte-order helpers, not the changed prefix conversion (src/byte_order.rs:175-188).

Resolution

Add a proptest that generates representable lengths for each supported prefix width and both endianness values, then verifies bytes_to_u64(u64_to_bytes(len)) == len. Include generated non-representable values where possible and assert that encoding returns InvalidInput. Keep the existing byte-order property test.

Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)

Explanation

The PR adds compile-time capability by changing public methods to const fn, including CodecError methods (src/codec/error.rs:224-254, 288-292), codec constructors (src/codec/examples.rs:42), recovery builders (src/codec/recovery/config.rs:58-72), and RequestParts methods (src/request/mod.rs:237, 301). The trybuild harness registers UI pass cases in tests/compile_error.rs:6-12, but none exercises these changed APIs in a const context. The PR changes no test files. The existing UI fixtures cover other const APIs, not these changes. No snapshot is needed for the binary and API changes shown here; the PR does not introduce text-based or UI output that warrants a snapshot.

Resolution

Add a focused trybuild pass fixture and register it in tests/compile_error.rs. Use the changed public APIs in constant expressions so the fixture verifies their compile-time usability. Cover the changed APIs intended for const evaluation; do not add snapshots unless the change introduces relevant text-based or UI output.

  • Autofix · Keep fixing CodeRabbit findings and required CI, and resolving merge conflicts

Bytes march in order, two, four, then eight,
Prefix checks keep each encoded length straight.
Const builders settle into place,
Codec errors keep their mapped case.
Assemblies gather each body byte,
And Self names each response right.

@leynos
leynos added this pull request to stack #802 October 23, 2026 11:32
Replace the remaining lint suppressions in the byte-order, codec, frame
conversion, message assembler, middleware, request and response modules
with equivalent source that satisfies the eventual baseline directly.

Network byte-order helpers now use `bytes::{Buf, BufMut}` so the wire
width is carried by the buffer type rather than a suppressed integral
conversion, and the little-endian decode path does the same. Prefix
encoding returns `io::Result` and validates every narrowing conversion
instead of asserting a caller invariant, and `CodecError`'s I/O mapping
moves behind a documented private helper.

Eligible accessors become `const fn`, shadowed bindings are renamed, and
`Response`'s self-references use `Self`. Add boundary and property tests
for the byte-order helpers and a fixed-width little-endian decode case so
the rewritten conversions keep exact evidence.

`PartialAssembly::body_buffer` becomes `body` and its accessor stays on a
single line, so the module remains within the 400-line budget after
formatting.

This five-arm match violates the *.rs instruction to move conditionals with more than two branches into a predicate. Keep the unsupported-width check separate to preserve the distinct errors.

Review comment at @src/frame/conversion.rs around lines 153 - 164:
Extract the width-dependent representability match in ensure_fits_prefix into a
dedicated predicate. Keep unsupported-width validation separate in
ensure_fits_prefix so unsupported sizes still return ERR_UNSUPPORTED_PREFIX, and
use the predicate only for supported widths.
