Pool acquisition no longer clones a core reference into a boxed future for each
slot. It probes stable slots in rotated order, then races borrowed semaphore
acquisitions only when all slots are blocked. The winner returns its slot index
and owned permit; dropping the remaining futures releases their registrations
and any assigned permits.
Blocked races record starts separately from terminal outcomes, plus wait
duration, including cancellation and shutdown. The pool also builds with metrics disabled using the tokio-utilio
feature already enabled on the target branch.
CI also creates the local master ref expected by Dylint when cloning rust-clippy, whose default branch has moved to main; the lint gate remains
enabled.
make fmt, make check-fmt, make markdownlint, make nixie, make test, make typecheck, make lint, make test-ui, make test-workflow-contracts,
and make test-pool-no-metrics passed on the rebased candidate. The newer Cargo reports an
inherited unused dependency warning in wireframe-verification; the
metrics-disabled check passes with warnings denied.
Tests cover rotated starts, every free position in two- and four-slot pools,
every readiness subset and release order for two to four slots, simultaneous
readiness, cancellation, shutdown, queued close, and release of the pool core.
Recorder-backed tests cover free probes, blocked grants, shutdown, and
cancellation; staged releases verify the first ready slot can win.
Local CodeRabbit reviews prompted test assertion consolidation and a bounded
transition model. Its latest focused review of c48718ca reported no findings.
Mutation testing of core.rs with the workflow exclusions and 50 pool-core
tests produced 17 caught, six unviable, three missed, and six timed-out
mutations. The three misses concern pool_size and shutdown_notified,
outside the permit-selection criterion and this scoped test filter. The len == 0 reversal and acquisition guard mutations were caught. Four
iterator replacements that timed out in the broad run were all caught by a
focused rotation test. Earlier manual index-map mutation evidence is recorded
in the baseline notes and addresses #593.
Before/after latency and allocation captures for pool sizes 1, 4, and 16 are
recorded in runtime ownership baselines.
The captures predate the rebase and the later blocked-race instrumentation;
they do not measure its overhead. Uncontended rows exercise try_acquire_permit; contended rows include scheduler and harness work. The
16-slot contended samples include few successful bursts, limiting comparison.
A successful probe allocates no storage proportional to pool size. A fully
blocked race allocates one FuturesUnordered node per slot. The probe also
makes the rotated starting slot deterministic without relying on stream poll
order. ADR 013 and the client design document describe this flow, including an
accessible caption for its sequence diagram.
Summary by Sourcery

Summary
Probe stable pool slots in rotated order without cloning slot Arcs.
If every slot is blocked, race borrowed semaphore acquisitions with FuturesUnordered. Return the winning slot index and owned permit, then drop the losing acquisitions.
Record acquisition attempts and blocked-race starts, outcomes and durations. Document the selection and metrics behaviour in the ADR and user and developer guides.
Expand uncontended allocation workloads to pool sizes 1, 4 and 16. Add FIFO contended workloads for those sizes and document the latency and allocation comparison, including its limits, in the runtime-ownership baseline.
Add bounded transition and cancellation tests. Add a CI compile check with metrics disabled and a Dylint Git wrapper for rust-clippy compatibility.
Pool acquisition now probes slots in rotated order and races borrowed semaphore acquisitions only when all slots are blocked. The change adds race metrics, behavioural tests, and pool-size benchmark coverage. It also updates CI lint setup and documents the acquisition flow and benchmark observations.
PoolCore probes slots in rotated order, then races borrowed acquisitions if all slots are blocked. The scheduler uses the borrowing method. Documentation describes the selection flow, cancellation of losing acquisitions, and verification scope.
Verify race outcomes and record metrics src/client/pool/core_tests/*, src/client/pool/client_pool_tests.rs, src/metrics/*, docs/users-guide.md, Makefile, .github/workflows/ci.yml
Tests cover rotation, readiness, permit ownership, cancellation, shutdown, close errors, and race metrics. Race metrics record starts, terminal outcomes, and durations. CI adds a metrics-disabled compile check.
FIFO contention workloads cover pool sizes 1, 4, and 16. Round-robin contention remains at size 4. Allocation scopes and event-only observations cover baseline sizes. The documentation records before-and-after measurements and their limits.

Explanation
[#646] Met. Read src/client/pool/core.rs at the reviewed head.
Permit-race futures borrow the core. acquire_from_blocked_slots pushes async move futures that borrow self.slot(slot_index) into a FuturesUnordered. The 'static boxed alias and the select_all path are gone. acquire_slot_permit takes &self.
No per-slot Arc clone. ordered_slot_indices returns an index iterator built by rotation_indices, which maps 0..len to (start + offset) % len. Slot objects are not rotated or cloned.
The winner returns SlotPermit = (usize, OwnedSemaphorePermit), which matches the issue.
Rotation is preserved. The cursor advances once per attempt, and rotation_start reduces it below len. rotation_tests and the permit_race tests cover rotated starts.
The uncontended probe (try_acquire_permit_inner) builds no pool-size-proportional collection. The blocked race allocates one FuturesUnordered node per slot. This applies only after all slots block, which the issue permits for the contended path.
Cancellation and losers. Dropping pending cancels losing acquisitions and releases any assigned permits. A permit obtained during shutdown is dropped and returns a disconnected error.
Tests (per PR evidence and the test summaries). permit_race.rs covers free-slot selection, simultaneous readiness, release order, and cancellation. transition_model.rs enumerates readiness subsets and release orders for two to four slots, plus shutdown. core_tests covers core lifetime.
Baseline. docs/runtime-ownership-baselines.md records before and after latency and allocation captures for pool sizes 1, 4, and 16, which satisfies the recording criterion. The captures predate the rebase and the later race instrumentation. The 16-slot contended runs failed with connection closed by peer. The document states these limits, and they do not invalidate the recording criterion.
#593. Rotation tests cover the rotated-start mutations, as the PR reports. I did not rerun mutation testing. This rests on the author's reported evidence.
Limits. I did not run the test suite. The diff tool could not read changed blobs, so the test-file and documentation claims rest on the supplied summaries and PR evidence.

Explanation
No demonstrated unrelated product change.
Core pool code (core.rs, service.rs) implements the borrowed permit race and its call-site update for [#646].
Tests (permit_race.rs, transition_model.rs, metric_tests.rs, client_pool_tests.rs, contended.rs) verify that change.
Metrics (src/metrics/client_pool.rs, mod.rs, server_startup.rs) instrument the new race path. The metrics cfg adjustments keep the changed code compiling with metrics disabled.
Benchmarks and wireframe_testing helpers produce the pool-size 1, 4, and 16 baseline required by [#646] and [#639].
The ADR, developer guide, user guide, client design, and baseline documents describe the changed behaviour.
The test-pool-no-metrics Make target and CI step check that the changed pool code builds with metrics disabled.
Most separable change. The scripts/dylint-git/git wrapper, its tests, and the ci.yml lint environment change support Dylint on the newer rust-clippy default branch. They do not alter pool runtime behaviour. The PR discloses them and states that they keep the lint gate enabled for this PR's validation. This is CI infrastructure rather than linked-issue scope, so it does not fail this check. The reviewers should confirm that they accept the change in this PR.

Explanation
Keep the change. The tests substantively exercise the changed pool behaviour: rotated immediate and async selection, held-start skipping, every free slot, blocked grants, simultaneous readiness, losing-permit release, cancellation, all readiness subsets and release schedules, shutdown, and post-cancellation reuse in src/client/pool/core_tests/permit_race.rs:37-314 and src/client/pool/core_tests/transition_model.rs:204-298. They also verify queued-close errors and core/slot release after task cancellation in src/client/pool/client_pool_tests.rs:91-186. Recorder-backed tests drive the real acquisition wrappers and check race starts, terminal labels, and durations in src/client/pool/core_tests/metric_tests.rs:172-251. The benchmark workload tests validate pool sizes, contention settings, labels, and lease grants in wireframe_testing/src/runtime_ownership_benchmarks/client_pool_benchmark_support/tests/contended.rs:20-152. The Dylint wrapper tests verify exact forwarding and creation of the master ref in tests/workflow_contracts/dylint_git_test.py:16-87. These assertions would fail for plausible implementations that select the wrong slot, overgrant, retain a losing permit, lose capacity during cancellation, grant after shutdown, omit race telemetry, or bypass the wrapper logic. No explicit testing failure condition is introduced.
Full details: User-Facing Documentation
Explanation
Pass. Document the new client-pool permit-race metrics in docs/users-guide.md under Client pool metrics (lines 1935–1969). The guide names all three metrics, defines their labels and terminal outcomes, explains blocked-race and immediate-probe behaviour, and gives usage guidance. The pool’s round-robin and saturation behaviour is also documented at lines 1927–1933. The changed acquisition method remains pub(crate), so no migration document is required.

No new execplan was added, and the relevant existing roadmap items remain checked off in docs/roadmap.md:799-805.
Full details: Module-Level Documentation
Explanation
Pass the module-level documentation check. Every changed Rust module has a leading //! docstring that states its purpose and role, including the new permit-race modules (src/client/pool/core_tests/permit_race.rs:1 and transition_model.rs:1) and the updated test-module relationship (src/client/pool/core_tests/mod.rs:1-7). The benchmark, pool, metrics, and scheduler modules also document their function and component relationships (benches/runtime_ownership_baselines_alloc/main.rs:1-10, src/metrics/mod.rs:1-5, wireframe_testing/src/runtime_ownership_benchmarks/mod.rs:1-10). The new Python test module also has a module docstring (tests/workflow_contracts/dylint_git_test.py:1).
Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)
Explanation
The PR introduces broad permit-race state and ordering invariants, but it adds bounded exhaustive coverage instead of relying on a small table. transition_model.rs:34-45 enumerates every non-empty ready subset and every release permutation for two-, three-, and four-slot cores. transition_model.rs:227-255 applies grant, cancellation, shutdown, and shutdown-then-cancellation terminals, then checks winner selection, loser capacity, full capacity restoration, and later acquisition. permit_race.rs:272-314 independently exhausts all ready sets for the same bounds. This is complete, deterministic bounded coverage that communicates the contract, so an additional property test is not required by this check.
Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)
Explanation
PASS — Accept the check. The PR adds the Rust compile-time gate test-pool-no-metrics, which runs cargo check --lib --no-default-features --features pool,serializer-bincode with warnings denied (Makefile:126-127) and invokes it in CI. The existing trybuild suite remains active for compile-time API contracts (tests/compile_error.rs:8-27). The new metric and workflow tests use focused semantic assertions for labels, durations, forwarded arguments and Git refs, so snapshot tests are not appropriate.
Full details: Unit Architecture
Explanation
PASS. Preserve the separation: PoolCore::acquire_slot_permit is an explicitly named fallible acquisition command returning Result<SlotPermit, ClientError>; the scheduler performs waiter orchestration and lease construction in its service boundary. Read accessors such as slot, is_shutdown, and pool_size remain read-only. Keep permit mutation and shutdown publication explicit in try_acquire_permit, acquire_slot_permit, and shutdown. Isolate observability in PoolPermitRaceGuard; its start, finish, drop behaviour, terminal outcomes, and duration recording are explicit. Inject the test clock through start_with_clock, while production uses the narrow monotonic-clock function boundary. No changed code introduces a query-side write, hidden fallibility, uninjectable mutable dependency, or unrelated responsibility.
Full details: Domain Architecture
Explanation
PASS. The changes stay within client-pool infrastructure and observability boundaries. src/client/pool/core.rs:8-14, 159-211 implements slot scheduling with Tokio/Futures primitives and maps failures to the existing ClientError; it does not add HTTP, SQL, filesystem, environment, or vendor-specific domain data. PoolPermitRaceGuard and metric recording remain in src/metrics/client_pool.rs:86-167, with only the existing pool acquisition path invoking them. The Dylint wrapper and CI edits are isolated to scripts/dylint-git/git and .github/workflows/ci.yml. No changed code introduces a domain model or command that reaches into adapter implementation details or claims an unenforced business invariant.
Full details: Observability
Explanation
Pass the observability check. Record the new operational states with bounded metrics: POOL_PERMIT_RACES_STARTED counts blocked-race starts, POOL_PERMIT_RACES records fixed granted, shutdown, error, or cancelled outcomes, and POOL_PERMIT_RACE_DURATION records wait time with the same fixed label set (src/metrics/client_pool.rs:74-82, 124-166). Emit these at race start, completion, and cancellation (src/client/pool/core.rs:141-155). Document the signals and their diagnostic use (docs/users-guide.md:1957-1969). The existing acquisition metric also records mode and outcome with bounded labels (src/metrics/client_pool.rs:57-72, 230-247). The race remains within the existing serial scheduler task and uses borrowed FuturesUnordered futures; it does not introduce a new process, service, storage, network, or spawned-task boundary requiring a new span (src/client/pool/scheduler/service.rs:19-45, src/client/pool/core.rs:134-140, 189-213). No unbounded labels, sensitive fields, or new alerts were added.
Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)
Explanation
The prior failure remains unresolved. The changed test adds #[case::shutdown_drop("shutdown_drop", true)] at src/client/pool/core_tests/metric_tests.rs:202. For that case, outcome != "shutdown", so the test does not call core.shutdown() at lines 226-227. It then drops the pending acquisition. PoolPermitRaceGuard::drop records only "shutdown" when the shutdown flag is set, otherwise "cancelled", as shown in src/metrics/client_pool.rs:157-166. Therefore this case records cancelled, while lines 243-249 require the nonexistent shutdown_drop label. The changed metrics test fails and does not verify the shutdown-drop path.
Resolution
Separate the scenario from the metric label. Add a shutdown boolean, use a case such as ("shutdown", true, true) for shutdown followed by dropping the pending acquisition, call core.shutdown() when that boolean is true, and assert the shutdown counter and histogram labels. Keep cancellation as ("cancelled", true, false). Do not use shutdown_drop as a metric label because the implementation exposes granted, shutdown, error, and cancelled.

Reworked pool permit acquisition to probe rotated slots synchronously and race borrowed blocked-slot futures only when necessary.
Removed per-slot Arc<PoolCore> cloning and boxed 'static futures.
Added allocation-free immediate probing with a shared round-robin cursor.
Added FuturesUnordered blocked acquisition over stable slot storage, with cancellation and loser-permit cleanup.
Preserved scheduler select! boundaries, shutdown checks, and permit ownership semantics.
Replace per-slot Arc cloning and 'static boxed permit futures with a scoped race that borrows stable slot storage and returns the winning slot index with its owned permit.
Preserve rotated starting-slot selection and ensure losing or cancelled acquisitions release semaphore registrations and permits, while shutdown still produces a typed failure.
Validate the change with behavioral coverage for rotation, slot selection, readiness, cancellation, and shutdown, and record pool-size 1, 4, and 16 benchmark comparisons.

Observability:PoolPermitRaceGuard records blocked-race starts, terminal outcomes, and duration. Recorder-backed tests cover grants, shutdown, shutdown on drop, and cancellation.
Testing (Property / Proof):blocked_race_preserves_capacity_for_every_ready_set checks every non-empty readiness subset for pool sizes 2, 3, and 4. Separate tests cover cancellation and shutdown. The bounded test does not vary release order or combine cancellation and shutdown transitions with those readiness sets. That part of the stated validation requirement remains unverified.
Use this prompt for the remaining in-scope work:
On PR #799, extend the bounded permit-race test in src/client/pool/core_tests/permit_race.rs. For small pool sizes, vary held/free slots, release order, simultaneous readiness, cancellation, and shutdown after waiter registration. Use deterministic current-thread execution and the real Tokio semaphore. Assert that a successful race returns exactly one owned permit, every losing slot retains or regains the expected capacity, cancellation releases registrations and permits, and shutdown returns the disconnected error without leaking capacity. Keep the test bounded and explain which combinations it covers. Run the relevant tests and the repository validation commands; report the results.
The author reports that local validation passed. I did not run repository tests in this inspection. At the last check, GitHub build-test and Rust CodeQL were still in progress. Wait for those checks to complete before treating CI as verified.

src/client/pool/core_tests/transition_model.rs now enumerates every nonempty
ready subset and every release permutation for pool sizes 2, 3, and 4. After
polling a blocked race to Pending, each schedule releases its selected
permits without repolling, then exercises grant, outer cancellation, shutdown,
and cancellation after shutdown. It checks winner and loser capacity, typed
disconnection, recovery of every raw slot, and bounded later acquisition.
The pool-level close test still covers the scheduler's shutdown selection.
The 12 targeted cases and make check-fmt, make test, make typecheck, and make lint passed. Please reassess this specific warning for the published

I inspected src/client/pool/core_tests/transition_model.rs and confirmed:
The registered test enumerates every non-empty readiness subset and every release permutation for pool sizes 2, 3, and 4.
Each schedule polls the saturated race to Pending, then releases the selected permits without repolling.
Each readiness schedule exercises grant, outer cancellation, shutdown, and cancellation after shutdown.
Grant assertions check that the winner belongs to the ready set, retains its permit, and leaves every released losing slot available.
Terminal assertions check typed UnexpectedEof disconnection, recovery of all raw slot capacity, and bounded later acquisition or shutdown rejection.
The pool-level close test also checks that shutdown rejects a queued acquisition while an existing lease retains its slot.
This bounded schedule enumeration closes the specific coverage gap from my previous assessment. It is not a proof of every concurrent interleaving, but no further test expansion is required for this warning. No AI agent prompt is needed.
Keep execution status separate from coverage. I inspected the source but did not run repository tests. Your reported validation passes remain author-reported. At the latest inspection, build-test and Rust CodeQL were still in progress. Wait for those checks to finish before treating CI as verified.

Check
Assessment
Unit Architecture
Addressed. PoolPermitRaceGuard borrows &dyn Fn() -> Instant + Send + Sync. Production supplies Instant::now. Both start and terminal recording use the supplied clock.
User-Facing Documentation
Addressed. docs/users-guide.md documents both metric names, all five counter outcomes, terminal duration labels, seconds as the histogram unit, and blocked-race-only observation. It also explains cancellation versus shutdown.
The recorder-backed blocked_race_records_duration_from_injected_clock test checks exactly one seven-second histogram sample for both grant and cancellation. The core-level tests separately exercise grant, shutdown, shutdown on drop, and cancellation through the real acquisition future.
The acquisition implementation still borrows stable slot storage. The clock change adds no per-slot core clone. Clock storage and timing calls are gated behind the metrics feature.
The PoolAcquisitionMode::PermitRace comment now distinguishes asynchronous probes from blocked races. No further code or documentation change is required for these two findings. No AI agent prompt or follow-up issue is needed.
Keep source assessment separate from execution status. I inspected the implementation and tests but did not run repository code. The validation passes remain author-reported. At the latest GitHub inspection, build-test and Rust CodeQL were still in progress. Wait for both checks to complete successfully before treating CI as verified.

@coderabbitai Please reassess the following pre-merge check for published head 7f8fd19cc845dc8319e724f357d1a2791290dfa3, base c6881e5e986efa480daf94025589a66f2ce0aba3:
Pre-merge checks failed: 1 error.
Testing (Unit And Behavioural), error: the shutdown_drop test supposedly
passes "shutdown_drop" as its outcome, producing an impossible metric case.
The assertion is based on a misread. In src/client/pool/core_tests/metric_tests.rs, the case is #[case::shutdown_drop("shutdown", true)]: shutdown_drop is the rstest case
name, while the actual outcome argument is "shutdown". The test therefore
calls core.shutdown(), drops the pending acquisition, and asserts the shutdown terminal counter and histogram. The full local test suite passed on
this unchanged code. Documentation-only repairs to the two inline findings are
also published and locally validated.
Please verify the literal case arguments and resolve the failed check if they
are as described; identify any valid remaining issue.
@wafflecat-df12Withdraw the Testing (Unit And Behavioural) finding as invalid at 7f8fd19cc845dc8319e724f357d1a2791290dfa3. I misread the rstest case name as an argument.
I verified that the checkout and published PR head match that revision. The base matches c6881e5e986efa480daf94025589a66f2ce0aba3.
In src/client/pool/core_tests/metric_tests.rs, Line 202 reads:
#[case::shutdown_drop("shutdown",true)]
shutdown_drop names the case. It is not the metric outcome.
"shutdown" supplies outcome.
true supplies drop_pending.
The test polls the acquisition to Pending, calls core.shutdown(), and drops the pending acquisition at scope exit. It then asserts one terminal counter and a recorded duration histogram with outcome="shutdown".
No edit or AI coding agent prompt is required for this finding. This inspection identifies no remaining issue with the disputed case.

Summary
Pool acquisition no longer clones a core reference into a boxed future for each
slot. It probes stable slots in rotated order, then races borrowed semaphore
acquisitions only when all slots are blocked. The winner returns its slot index
and owned permit; dropping the remaining futures releases their registrations
and any assigned permits.
Blocked races record starts separately from terminal outcomes, plus wait
duration, including cancellation and shutdown. The pool also builds with metrics disabled using the
tokio-utiliofeature already enabled on the target branch.
CI also creates the local
masterref expected by Dylint when cloningrust-clippy, whose default branch has moved tomain; the lint gate remainsenabled.

order. ADR 013 and the client design document describe this flow, including an
accessible caption for its sequence diagram.
Summary by Sourcery
