CraftSpace

A mobile app + smart studio board that connects beginner crafters to guided tutorials, equipment reservations, and live workshops — so you spend less time figuring out and more time making.

🌐 Launch the app → crafting-space.vercel.app

About

CraftSpace is a concept product designed for beginner crafters who want to learn hands-on skills in a studio environment without the intimidation. The app connects your phone to a studio smart board, so when you walk in, your workspace is already set up for the craft you chose.

Built as a final project for CSE 440: Human-Computer Interaction at the University of Washington Allen School, Winter 2026.

Features

  • Craft Browser — Browse and filter across four crafts: Crocheting, Knitting, 3D Printing, and Painting
  • Beginner-Friendly Tutorials — Step-by-step guides tailored to first-timers
  • Equipment Reservation — Reserve tools before you arrive so your station is ready
  • Studio Check-In — Scan a QR code at the studio to sync your phone with the smart board
  • Live Class Enrollment — Sign up for expert-led in-person workshops directly in the app
  • Progress Tracking & Badges — Track your skills and earn badges as you level up
  • Mentor Connections — Connect with instructors and peers in the studio

Running the App

No installation needed. Open your browser and go to:

https://crafting-space.vercel.app/

The marketing site is fully interactive — you can browse crafts, filter classes by type, and explore the full user flow. To try the prototype:

  1. Visit crafting-space.vercel.app
  2. Scroll to "See the app in action" to watch the concept video
  3. Open the interactive Figma prototype to click through the full app flow

Research & Design Process

This project was grounded in user research before any design decisions were made.

  • 21 user interviews with young adults (ages 18–25)
  • Contextual inquiry at The MILL makerspace
  • Key findings:
    • 90% of beginners learn at home through online tutorials due to intimidating shared spaces
    • Lack of structure and peer support are the top barriers to getting started
    • Crowding, long wait times, and inconsistent tools create friction in makerspaces
  • Paper prototypingDigital mockups (Figma)Interactive prototype
