📳   Namimoji

A tactile language for the moments your eyes, ears, and hands are busy.

Felt on your watch, phone, or wearable.

Status Version License Patent

✨   The idea

Your phone buzzes. You look.

Namimoji makes that unnecessary.

It turns vibration into a language your skin can read — structured messages carrying who and what.

🧬   Two messages, one channel

📩   Message  ·  "Anna says hi"  —  two segments, joined by a divider

❤️

WHO
identification  —  who it's from

Triple Flutter
recognized like a ringtone

┊

divider
an invariant marker between segments

👋

WHAT
content  —  what it says

Knock-Knock
a hello you feel

🌧️   Concept  ·  "a rain warning"  —  one signal: when, how long, how hard

🕒

ONSET
when it starts  —  a short tap for each five-minute mark

●
one tap  →  five minutes

⏳

DURATION
how long it lasts  —  long beats and short taps count the time

●─── ●
long + short  →  thirty-five minutes

🌧️

INTENSITY
how hard it falls  —  density reads as strength

●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
dense run  →  heavy rain

🧱   Core elements

🖐️   Skin as language

Semantic channel, not an alert channel.

🧩   Modular encoding

Choose from rhythm, concept, custom.

🔁   Two-way loop

Feel. Gesture. Reply. No screen.

⚡   Event-driven

Apps, sensors, timers, concepts.

🧠   Fluent perception

Conscious by default. Unconscious at best.

🌍   Open-licensed

CC BY 4.0 by default.

In practice, one implementation might ship a vocabulary of named patterns — namimojis — that play instead of being spelled out:

❤️ Triple Flutter a heart picking up its pace
✓ Drumroll + Bell a rising roll into a bright ring
👋 Knock-Knock someone at the door, twice
🚨 BRUTAL eight unbroken seconds of pure intensity — emergencies only

🎯   Who it's for

🚴 🎧 🩺 🦯 👶 🛠️
Cyclist Commuter Surgeon Deafblind Parent Crew
eyes on traffic in a meeting mid-operation no sight, no sound household in motion hands on tools

Visual and auditory interfaces fail at those moments. Tactile ones don't have to.

🌐   An open standard

Namimoji is an open standard for tactile communication, like Unicode for text.

A message encoded on one device can be felt on another. Built for smartwatches, phones, wearables, accessibility tools, and hobby hardware.

One standard. Many implementations.

This README is the conceptual overview. The normative specification — including the wire format, encoder registry, reference encoders, conformance criteria, and test vectors — is in active development and will be published here and at namimoji.com as it matures.

Namimoji is an independent open specification for structured tactile communication. The haptic concept builds on the academic term "tacton" — a tactile icon (Brewster & Brown, 2004), used here descriptively.

About

An open draft specification for structured tactile communication — using vibration as a semantic channel distinct from a notification signal.
