What

On desktop, going from Now Playing's song title to the album page blurred the sidebars with the album art backdrop until the transition finished.

Why

The album and search pages draw a full-window blurred backdrop (position: fixed, behind the content). <main> is its own view-transition layer (app-main), and its snapshot includes fixed-position descendants. That snapshot is painted above the rest of the page, so the backdrop covered the sidebars for the length of the transition.

Fix

::view-transition-group(app-main) { overflow: clip; } clips the snapshot to <main>'s box. This only applies during transitions, so the live page doesn't change.

Also fixed (00c0fe1)

The real cause of the visible bug: view-transition-name on <main> makes it a stacking context permanently, so the album/search pages' fixed backdrop painted over the translucent left sidebar even with no transition running. Both sidebars are now relative z-[1]. Juan confirmed on prod. Follow-ups: #325, #326.

Verified

  • Headless Chromium repro (sidebar + named <main> + fixed backdrop, screenshot mid-transition). Without the clip, the backdrop tints the sidebar. With it, the sidebar stays clean.
  • Not yet checked on desktop Safari or iOS.

…ars during transitions (#289)

The album and search pages draw a full-window blurred backdrop (position:
fixed, behind the content). <main> is its own view-transition layer
(app-main), and its snapshot includes fixed descendants, so for the whole
transition that backdrop painted over the sidebars on desktop. Most visible
going from Now Playing's song title to the album page. Clip the app-main
group to <main>'s box.

…op (#289)

view-transition-name on <main> (app-main) makes it a stacking context all
the time, not only during transitions. The album and search pages' fixed,
negative-z backdrop then paints as part of <main>'s layer, above the
non-positioned, translucent left sidebar, so the sidebar sat under the
backdrop's gradient. Put both sidebars on their own layer above <main>,
which restores the pre-#320 stacking.
