Native macOS (Tauri 2) study app built for Georgia Tech OMSCS CS-6200 (GIOS) and the OSTEP textbook — and just as usable by any student with a folder of markdown notes: point it at your own corpus and you get active-recall quizzing, SM-2 spaced repetition, timed exams, and gamified progress tracking on top of your material.
The design follows the learning-science literature: retrieval practice over re-reading, confidence ratings before every answer (hypercorrection), interleaved review, successive relearning for mastery medals, and competence-focused gamification that can't be farmed by doing the easy thing.
A complete OSTEP corpus is included in notes/: 50 chapter
notes, 545 follow-up Q&As with answers, 20 original practice exams with
keys, and checkpoint quiz sidecars — the app works out of the box. See
notes/README.md for provenance, attribution, and
license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0; the app code itself carries no course content).
The corpus markdown is the source of truth — the app parses it read-only
on every launch (chapters + answers/, practice-exams/ + keys, plus
checkpoints/chNN.json quiz sidecars). Edit the notes and just
relaunch/reload. Progress (spaced repetition, checkpoints, XP, streak, exam
attempts) is stored separately in
~/Library/Application Support/ai.bebridge.giosstudy/state.json.
- Notes — chapter browser with rendered markdown, search, and active follow-up questions: answer each one (MC / typed numbers / self-checked recall) instead of passively revealing; "peek" remains for reference.
- Chapter Checkpoints — the end-of-chapter ritual, built on learning
research: free-recall brain dump → mixed quiz (~8 weakest items + up to 3
interleaved from weak earlier chapters) with a confidence rating before
every answer → hypercorrection round replaying certain-but-wrong items →
results with calibration stats. Question formats come from
checkpoints/chNN.jsonsidecars in the corpus (MC with competitive distractors, typed numeric answers for worked problems, enum/rubric self-checks) — all 545 questions covered. - Progression — bronze/silver/gold chapter medals via spaced re-testing (≥70%, then ≥85% ≥2 days later, then strength ≥80% held a week), difficulty-weighted XP (recall > recognition, due review > cram), practice exams as a boss wall (defeat at ≥70%), study streak with one grace day, and a daily chapters-studied graph on the dashboard.
- Daily reminder — optional macOS notification at a chosen time via a
launchd user agent
(
~/Library/LaunchAgents/ai.bebridge.giosstudy.reminder.plist) — fires even when the app is closed. Toggle in Settings. - Drill — flashcards over the 545 chapter Q&As with SM-2 spaced
repetition. Keyboard-first:
Spacereveal,1–4grade (Again/Hard/Good/Easy). Modes: due+new, new only, cram. - Exams — all 10 practice exams with countdown timer (overtime allowed and flagged), MC/TF/select-all/free-response inputs, keys hidden until submit. MC and T/F are auto-graded from the key; free response is self-graded side-by-side against the key with partial credit. Attempts and scores are saved and reviewable.
- Dashboard — cards due, per-chapter mastery bars, weakest chapters, exam history.
The app parses any corpus folder with this shape (set the path in Settings):
your-notes/
01-some-part/chNN-title.md # notes ending in "## Follow-up Questions" (numbered list)
answers/01-some-part/chNN-title.md # matching numbered answers
practice-exams/exam-NN-name.md # optional, with answers/ keys
practice-exams/answers/exam-NN-name.md
checkpoints/chNN.json # optional quiz sidecars (MC distractors,
# numeric answers, rubrics) — see this
# repo's format; without them questions
# fall back to type-then-self-grade
Everything is read-only toward your notes; progress is stored separately.
