Any tips for implementing a polling approach to replace `waitForProperty`?

I'm seeing a deprecation warning about waitForProperty and it recommends using "a polling approach" but doesn't include a link to any info about what that means. Is there a recommended pattern for this that's documented somewhere?

DEPRECATION: waitForProperty is deprecated due to its use of observers.
Consider using a polling approach instead.
