Kartova maps every byte on a volume to a picture you can click through, so the thing eating your disk is visible at a glance rather than after a hunt.

Self-contained: one file per platform, nothing to install, no runtime to fetch.

Linux builds need libX11, libICE, libSM and fontconfig, which every desktop install already has.

About the security warning

These builds are not code-signed yet, so Windows and macOS will both warn you on first launch. The warning means the publisher could not be verified — not that anything was found wrong with the file.

• Windows shows "Windows protected your PC". Choose More info → Run anyway.
• macOS refuses a double-click. Right-click the app → Open, then confirm. Once only.

Checking SHA256SUMS.txt is worthwhile either way: it proves the download arrived intact and matches what was published.

Signing is planned — SignPath Foundation covers open-source projects on Windows; macOS notarization needs a paid Apple Developer account and may take longer.

What it does

• Treemap and sunburst views of the same scan, rasterized rather than composed, so layout cost is bounded by canvas pixels rather than file count. Either view exports as PNG.
• Duplicate finder that compares contents, not names — two files match only when every byte does, two folders only when their entire trees do. Staged so a tree of uniquely-sized files is answered without a single read. Hard links are excluded, since removing one recovers nothing.
• Insights: stale files, empty folders, zero-byte files and recognised rebuildable clutter, each labelled with how safe it is to remove. No one-click purge, on purpose.
• Snapshots and comparison to answer what changed, naming the outermost folder for additions and the innermost file for growth.
• Filter query language: *.mp4 >500mb after:2024-01-01.
• Headless CLI for build agents and SSH sessions, with no display at all.
• Four languages: English, German, French and Spanish.
• Dark and light themes, exclusion rules, CSV and JSON export, and deletion to the platform trash.

Notes

Roughly 95,000 files per second; a 187,000-file, 50 GiB C:\Windows scan finishes in about two seconds.

Tested on Windows 11, macOS 26.5 and Ubuntu at this commit: 200 tests, all passing on each.

MIT licensed. Kartova is an independent implementation, not affiliated with WinDirStat, QDirStat or SpaceSniffer, though it owes all three the debt of a good idea.
