What this changes

Problem. super(&s), with s a local holding a Symbol (#10632), gave its block one parameter, and an argument that rebinds s ran after the block had read it:

class E
  def y = yield(255, 16)
  def m(a, &b) = b.call(a)
end
class F < E
  def y
    s = :to_s
    super(&s)
  end
  def m(a)
    s = :upcase
    super((s = :downcase; a), &s)
  end
end
p F.new.y        # CRuby: "ff"   Spinel: "255"
p F.new.m("Hi")  # CRuby: "hi"   Spinel: "HI"

Cause. desugar_symbol_var_block_arg sizes the block by sym_block_values, which asks user_block_values how many values the called method yields. That answered only a CallNode, so a super got one parameter and dropped the 16. desugar_block_arg_order, which reads &s after the arguments, staged only a CallNode as well.

Fix.

  • user_block_values answers a super by the method it calls (a_super_target), as it answers a call by its callee. The block then sends the rest of the yielded values to the first, as it does for a call.
  • desugar_block_arg_order stages a super whose &local an argument rebinds.
  • block_values_in counts a super that hands the block on (no block of its own, or &b), and method_block_values asks the method it calls. The count stands when they agree, and the block takes one value when they do not, as for two yields that disagree. Before, a body yielding 255, 16 that also called such a super gave two parameters even where the parent yields one (invalid radix 0 on master, through a plain call), and a body that only hands the block on gave one.

Test. test/super_sym_local_block.rb gains both cases, plus a method that hands its block on with def f = super, with super(&b), and on one of two paths. On master the first two print "255" and "HI", and the rest print "255" or raise ArgumentError; here the test matches CRuby 4.0.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed cases where local Symbol blocks were not correctly forwarded through super. Forwarding now uses the local variable’s value when super runs, including when it is rebound before the call.
    • Improved handling of forwarded blocks that receive yielded arguments, including paths that use explicit yield.

The block a Symbol local makes for `super(&s)` took one parameter, so a
parent that yields `255, 16` gave `255.to_s` where CRuby gives
`255.to_s(16)`. user_block_values now answers a super by the method it
calls (a_super_target), as it answers a call by its callee, and the
block sends the rest of the values to the first.

An argument of `super(a, &s)` that rebinds s ran after the block read
s: desugar_block_arg_order staged only a call. It now stages a super
whose `&local` an argument rebinds, as it does a call's.

Walkthrough

Block-argument analysis now includes eligible super nodes and resolves block arity through super targets. Tests cover local Symbol blocks forwarded through super, including a local rebound before forwarding and explicit yield paths.

Changes: Local Symbol block forwarding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Analyze block arguments
src/analyze.c
Block-parameter counting now uses sym_block_values for non-top-level-procedure nodes. The block-argument scan includes super nodes and filters sequential blocks, non-local-variable expressions, and expressions that may act.
Resolve super targets and test forwarding
src/analyze_desugar.c, test/super_sym_local_block.rb, test/super_sym_local_block.rb.expected
Block-value analysis follows super targets up to depth 8 and rejects unknown or conflicting arities and unmatched block-parameter reads. Tests cover local Symbol blocks forwarded through super, rebinding a local before forwarding, and explicit yield paths. Expected output adds "ff", "hi", additional "ff" lines, and "255".

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title states the main behavior change: super(&s) now forwards every value the parent yields, and this happens after the arguments run. The objectives describe the same fix to user_block_values (counting super targets) and desugar_block_arg_order (staging super when an argument rebinds the local). The title is specific and accurate, and it is 70 characters long, which is acceptable. It does not mention the staging-order fix, but it covers the primary change.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 1 files. (2 skipped: 1 unsupported, 1 too large.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Review comments at @src/analyze_desugar.c:
- Line 17142: Redesign the yield-count analysis used for `super(&s)` so it
accounts for conditional paths and yields in the ancestor method receiving the
block; a static count of `user_block_values` from the target method’s body must
not create required block parameters for values that may not be yielded. Ensure
the generated send passes only values actually yielded at runtime, or otherwise
preserves correct behavior on every path, including when the ancestor yields
fewer values.

Review comments at @src/analyze.c:
- Line 10938: Update `block_values_in` so Symbol-block arity analysis follows
forwarded `super` targets, including `super(&s)`, and accounts for values
yielded by ancestor blocks. Add a regression test for the two-level forwarding
case where the ancestor yields two values, ensuring `sym_block_values` preserves
both.

Comment thread src/analyze.c Resolved
user_block_values sizes a Symbol's block by the values the called
method's body yields, but never counted a `super` that hands the block
on (one with no block of its own, or `&b`). A body that yields
`255, 16` and on another path calls super, whose method yields one
value, gave a two-parameter block, and `255.to_s(nil)` raised; a body
that only hands the block on gave one parameter, and a method super
calls that yields `255, 16` gave `255.to_s` where CRuby gives
`255.to_s(16)`.

block_values_in now counts those super sites, and method_block_values
asks the method each one calls: the count stands when they agree, and
the block takes one value when they do not, as for two yields that
disagree.

…he block on

`def f(c) = super(c) { |s| s.upcase }` in C, over B's `def f(c) = super()`
(or a bare `super`, or `super(&b)`), over A's `def f = yield("abc")`:
C.new.f(1) printed nil, where CRuby prints "ABC", and C#f was emitted as
void. With B yielding itself the same call answered right. The middle
method has no call site of its own, so yield_value_type found no block for
it, and yield_value_type_via_super, which looks at the children whose
super lands on it, took each child's callers' blocks (none reaches the
child's own super); a child's super that carries a literal block of its
own was not read. That block is what the grandparent's yield runs, so
via_super now answers its value (yvt_literal_block_value, the literal
block typing yield_value_type already had, moved into a helper).

super_target_ret also treats a parent that only hands the block on to a
yield-tailed chain (method_hands_block_tail) as a yielding one when the
super carries a literal block, so method_call_ret types the call per
site, and method_call_ret counts such a super tail (super_hands_block_tail)
beside a yield tail.

Still typed from another site: a middle method that also has a plain
call of its own with a block of another type (`B.new.f(1) { |s| s.size }`
beside C's super) keeps that first block's type for the nested super,
and C's call answers 0; master does the same. The `super(&s)` with a
Symbol local through such a chain answers as #10732 describes when the
yields disagree on their count.

Test: test/super_chain_literal_block_value.rb (two and three levels,
bare super, `super(&b)`, a block reading the child's locals and one with
`next`). 467 super/yield tests of the corpus answer as on master.
