A detect on an Integer or a String is looked up by its own name - #10733
Problem.collect_concat and detect called on an Integer, a String, nil, a Regexp, a Time or another builtin value with no Enumerable kept the builtin's name (flat_map, find), which nothing answers there:
defdetect="top detect"p42.send(:detect)# CRuby: "top detect"# Spinel: undefined method 'find' for an instance of Integer (NoMethodError)
The same happened to a reopening (class Integer; def detect = ...; end then 7.detect). A top-level private def collect_concat also left [[1], [2]].collect_concat { } raising NoMethodError.
Cause.desugar_builtins renames the two to flat_map and find (LR_ENUM_NAME), the names builtins/enumerable.rb defines, and keeps the written name in orig_name. desugar_builtin_enum_calls writes that name back (enum_unrename) when the receiver is a class of the program that answers it. A receiver of a scalar type never got there, so the call stayed find. Separately, def_at_top_level recognised only a bare def, so private def collect_concat counted as a definition every call might reach, and an Array's call kept a name an Array does not answer.
Fix.
In desugar_builtin_enum_calls, a receiver of a builtin value type with no each (ty_lacks_enumerable: nil, Integer, Float, String, Symbol, a boolean, Time, Complex, Rational, MatchData, Regexp, an exception, Proc, Method, Thread, Fiber, Queue, Mutex, Random, OpenStruct and the like) takes back the written name. This runs before the skip of a call an outer each is chained on, so 42.send(:detect).each { } keeps it too. IO, ARGF and Dir include Enumerable, a Process::Tms is a Struct, and a class object may extend it, so they are left out. A call given its name back this way takes the builtin's again if a later round widens the receiver. A send then reaches the top-level method, a reopening answers its own method, and a NoMethodError names detect.
def_at_top_level also accepts a def that a visibility call wraps.
An Array's send(:collect_concat) keeps the builtin, as on master.
Test.test/enum_alias_scalar_receiver.rb defines a top-level private def collect_concat, a top-level detect and Symbol#detect, then calls:
collect_concat on an Array, directly and through send;
both through send on an Integer, an Integer local and a String;
detect on an Array and, through send, on a Range;
:sym.detect;
both receiverless;
detect through send on a Regexp, a Time, a Rational, an exception, a Proc, a Method, a Random and a Thread.
test/enum_alias_scalar_receiver_chain.rb chains each and each_with_index on 42.send(:detect), where the top-level detect answers an Array.
On master the first test is refused at compile time (unsupported call for find on a Regexp), and the second raises NoMethodError for find at its first each; here both match CRuby 4.0.

Corrected handling of collect_concat/flat_map and detect/find aliases when receivers are scalar or otherwise do not support Enumerable, so calls resolve to the intended method instead of being rewritten as Enumerable operations.
Preserved expected behavior for alias calls made through send, including when the returned value is chained into further operations.
Calls to custom methods on symbols continue to use the defined method behavior.
collect_concat and detect are renamed to flat_map and find, the names
builtins/enumerable.rb defines. desugar_builtin_enum_calls puts the
written name back when the receiver is a class of the program that
answers it, but an Integer, a String or nil kept the builtin's name,
which nothing answers on them:
def detect = "top detect"
p 42.send(:detect) # CRuby: "top detect"; Spinel: NoMethodError (find)
A receiver of such a type now takes back the written name, so a send
reaches the top-level method, a reopening of Integer answers its own
detect, and a NoMethodError names detect.
A top-level `private def collect_concat` is the same top-level method,
but def_at_top_level saw only a bare def, so `[[1], [2]].collect_concat`
kept a name an Array does not answer.

Walkthrough
The change recognizes definitions wrapped in visibility calls as top-level definitions. It updates Enumerable alias handling for receiver types that lack Enumerable and restores marked calls if the receiver type changes. Regression tests cover direct and send calls, including chains.

Top-level definition checks recognize definitions wrapped in visibility calls. Enumerable dispatch restores written alias names for receiver types that lack Enumerable and updates marked calls if the receiver type changes. Tests cover direct and send calls, including chains, and record expected output.
Process.times alias calls can incorrectly skip inherited Enumerable behavior in a narrow runtime path; remove TY_TMS from the classifier before merging.

Explanation
The title names the scalar-receiver behavior, but the changeset is mainly about desugaring enum aliases (detect → find, collect_concat → flat_map) and restoring their written names for receivers without Enumerable. The title names the 'detect' case on Integer and String receivers, which is a real part of the change. It leaves out the collect_concat case, the desugaring logic, and the top-level def detection update, so it is partially related rather than fully related. It is not vague, and it does not describe anything absent from the changeset.

The written name of a renamed detect or collect_concat came back on an
Integer, a String or nil, but a Regexp, a Time, a MatchData, a Rational,
a Complex and an exception kept the builtin's name, which they do not
answer: `/x/.send(:detect)` with a top-level detect was refused, and
`1.5r.send(:detect)` raised NoMethodError for find. ty_lacks_enumerable
names every builtin value type with no `each`; an IO, ARGF and a Dir
include Enumerable, and a class object may extend it, so they are left
out.
The test ran after the skip of a call an outer each is chained on, so
`42.send(:detect).each { }` kept find and raised NoMethodError. It now
runs first.

A call given back its written name while its receiver had such a type
is marked, and takes the builtin's name again if a later round widens
the receiver to one with Enumerable, since builtin_enum_name_index does
not know collect_concat and the rewrite would skip the call.

PR #10733 gives a call renamed to the builtin's name (detect to find,
collect_concat to flat_map) its written name back when the receiver is a
builtin value with no Enumerable, so `1.5r.send(:detect)` reaches the
top-level detect. Under --int-overflow=promote a Rational is held boxed
and typed poly (an_rat_boxed_mark), so the type test missed it, the call
stayed `find`, and test/enum_alias_scalar_receiver.rb raised
`undefined method 'each' for an instance of Rational` in the promote run
of the cident lane (cycle 397 did not push). The boxed Rational is
recognised through an_rat_value, as the other Rational operand tests do.
Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
Merged to master in the cycle that pushed 711c132 (merge commit 14583c0), with a follow-up commit, 3496fd9. The first cycle with this PR did not push: in the cident lane's run of the changed programs under --int-overflow=promote, test/enum_alias_scalar_receiver.rb raised undefined method 'each' for an instance of Rational at 1.5r.send(:detect). Under promote a Rational is held boxed and typed poly (an_rat_boxed_mark), so ty_lacks_enumerable(rt) did not see it and the call kept find. The receiver test now also accepts a poly node that an_rat_value marks as a Rational, as the other Rational operand tests do; the test passes in both integer modes.
