Keep builtin Array#concat before a reopening, and honor each operand’s conversion.

This follows #10660 and addresses the remaining cases from matz’s list of gaps. The semantics follow CRuby 4.0.7’s Array#concat.

The synthetic repros below run with empty ARGV. Each output table gives the complete stdout, line by line; CRuby 4.0.7 and Spinel are shown next to each other.

A call made before the program defines its own Array#concat uses the builtin; a call after the definition uses the replacement.

def add(a)
  a.concat([2])
end
a = [1]
p add(a)
class Array
  def concat(other)
    :replacement
  end
end
p add(a)
Line CRuby 4.0.7 Spinel
1 [1, 2] [1, 2]
2 :replacement :replacement

A receiver held as a mixed value calls the operand’s to_ary. Changes that conversion makes to the receiver are kept, including when the underlying Array contains only Integers.

def boxed(a)
  ARGV.empty? ? a : 0
end
class Src
  def to_ary
    [2]
  end
end
a = boxed([1, :x])
p a.concat(Src.new, [3])
class Mutator
  def initialize(a)
    @a = a
  end
  def to_ary
    @a << 9
    [2]
  end
end
a = boxed([1])
p a.concat(Mutator.new(a), [3])
Line CRuby 4.0.7 Spinel
1 [1, :x, 2, 3] [1, :x, 2, 3]
2 [1, 9, 2, 3] [1, 9, 2, 3]

An operand uses its subclass override of to_ary.

class Parent
  def to_ary
    [7]
  end
end
class Child < Parent
  def to_ary
    [2]
  end
end
p [1].concat(Child.new, [3])
Line CRuby 4.0.7 Spinel
1 [1, 2, 3] [1, 2, 3]

concat calls to_ary and raises TypeError if it returns nil.

class Src
  def to_ary
    puts "convert"
    nil
  end
end
begin
  [1].concat(Src.new, [3])
rescue => e
  puts e.class
end
Line CRuby 4.0.7 Spinel
1 convert convert
2 TypeError TypeError

The result is also TypeError when to_ary may return either nil or an Array.

class Src
  def to_ary
    puts "convert"
    ARGV.empty? ? nil : [2]
  end
end
begin
  [1].concat(Src.new, [3])
rescue => e
  puts e.class
end
Line CRuby 4.0.7 Spinel
1 convert convert
2 TypeError TypeError

Arguments are evaluated first. A frozen receiver raises before to_ary is called.

class Src
  def to_ary
    puts "convert"
    [2]
  end
end
a = [1].freeze
begin
  a.concat((puts "argument"; Src.new), [3])
rescue => e
  puts e.class
end
Line CRuby 4.0.7 Spinel
1 argument argument
2 FrozenError FrozenError

A later conversion can change an earlier operand, while concat keeps the elements already taken from it.

class Src
  def initialize(a)
    @a = a
  end
  def to_ary
    @a[0] = 9
    [3]
  end
end
first = [2]
p [1].concat(first, Src.new(first))
p first
Line CRuby 4.0.7 Spinel
1 [1, 2, 3] [1, 2, 3]
2 [9] [9]

Each object operand converts through its own method, in operand order, retaining matz’s 1a62f0f behavior in both integer modes.

class First
  def to_ary
    puts "first"
    [2]
  end
end
class Second
  def to_ary
    puts "second"
    [3]
  end
end
p [1].concat(First.new, Second.new)
Line CRuby 4.0.7 Spinel
1 first first
2 second second
3 [1, 2, 3] [1, 2, 3]

The recent concat fixes by st0012 are retained. CodeRabbit’s review identified the call-before-reopening case. Thanks to matz for 1a62f0f55, the list of gaps, and merging #10675.

Compile-scale measurements compare master 0ed86ea with branch f2f4c97. Programs with no possible concat definition avoid an extra compile-time walk. On synthetic conditional definitions without concat, the deterministic work counts are:

Definitions Master Before the guard With the guard
200 117606512 117658635 117610915
400 244510695 244614818 244519498
800 524077009 524285132 524094613
3200 2980063866 2980895989 2980134270

The remaining increase is at most 0.003744%, below the 1% limit, and is fully accounted for by the call's version checks and one or two comparisons in the name lookup.

Five paired rounds compare CPU time at 3200 against 800 definitions. Each round uses the best of three compiles at each size, and the median uses all five rounds. The limit is 9.0:

Round Master ratio Branch ratio
1 6.480905 7.233085
2 7.694121 7.456624
3 7.233344 6.935207
4 6.236301 6.017344
5 7.754263 6.296418
Median 7.233344 6.935207

Both medians pass. The host had 18 CPUs; its one-minute load min/median/max was 5.58/12.18/21.98 during the run. These are compile-scaling measurements.

On this exact branch, all 126 focused cases pass in default and --int-overflow=promote modes, including the 19-case oracle subset, collection stress, reopening and boxed-receiver probes. Each of the five added fixtures fails on the tested master and passes on the branch. The Integer operand block-copy route is retained.

On branch f2f4c97, based on master 0ed86ea, the x86_64 Linux default full gate passes: 9529 native cases, all 5506 retained RubySpec examples in 22 groups, and the complete plan audit. The earlier timeout and unnamed RubySpec aggregate findings do not reproduce on the paired controls or the completed default gate.

The promote full gate also completes: all 9547 native cases and all 5506 retained examples in all 22 groups pass. Its sole failure is the plan check, which reports 149 unrecorded rows. Every one is included in the 152 rows across 91 fixtures already matched exactly with the tested master. The complete promote audit includes three further rows from two programs outside the native corpus and matches all 152 diagnostics, with no strict-program failure. No new failure is observed. The native corpus uses -O0 in both modes.

The branch merges cleanly with master ef0b659, checked after validation. The tested source remains pinned to 0ed86ea.

Walkthrough

Array#concat now has a marked builtin version for programs that define concat. Code generation handles boxed receivers and object operands, including to_ary dispatch and conversion results. Tests cover load order, boxed receivers, nil conversion results, and overridden to_ary methods.

Concat code generation handles boxed receivers and dispatches object to_ary methods. It checks boxed conversion results and appends converted elements. Tests cover boxed receivers, nil results, overridden methods, and receiver mutation.
Route splatted and poly-face concat calls
src/codegen_call_recv.c
The splat mutator handles builtin concat on boxed receivers, checks frozen state before operand conversion, and appends gathered values through array runtime helpers. Poly-face concat calls use the original receiver and the specialized concat emitter.

Keep concat conversion behind the frozen check.

For a frozen typed array and one object whose to_ary returns an array, this pass rewrites the argument to obj.to_ary. That call runs before emit_builtin_array_concat checks the receiver, so conversion side effects occur before FrozenError. Leave concat conversion to the emitter. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Guard only nullable pointer operands before to_ary dispatch.

The unboxed dispatch receiver can be a nullable ordinary object (RK_PTR), but a value object (RK_VOBJ) is held by value and cannot use a pointer null check. Preserve the operand representation separately from the conversion result, then check only RK_PTR operands with may_nil.

An operand of Array#concat typed as a program object that may be nil
(`x = cond ? nil : Src.new; [1].concat(x)`) ran the object's to_ary through
the NULL pointer and appended its answer, where CRuby raises TypeError
(no implicit conversion of nil into Array). The dispatch is now preceded
by a nil check when the operand is held as a pointer that may be NULL
(RK_PTR with may_nil); a boxed or by-value operand is left as it is.
Raised by CodeRabbit's review of PR #10734; master gave the same answer.

Test: test/array_concat_nullable_object_operand.rb.

Merged to master in the cycle that pushed 78e4bc6 (merge commit 1d56e82), with a follow-up commit, 78e4bc6, for CodeRabbit's finding. An operand typed as a program object that may be nil

x = ARGV.empty? ? nil : Src.new
[1].concat(x, [3])

ran to_ary through the NULL pointer and appended its answer ([1, 2, 3]); master gave the same answer. The dispatch is now preceded by a nil check when the operand is held as a pointer that may be NULL (RK_PTR with may_nil), raising CRuby's TypeError (no implicit conversion of nil into Array) ahead of any append, as the other conversions do. Boxed and by-value operands are unchanged. Test: test/array_concat_nullable_object_operand.rb.
