A step of #9898, stacked on #10736 (its commit is the second of this branch, the same SHA; the first is #10731, merged), after #10717, #10728, #10729 and #10731 (merged). The last of the PRs that let a Class.new or Module.new block stay a block: #10717 took the builders a constant holds; this PR takes the path writes (A::B = Class.new do ... end) under a namespace the program defines before them. This moves answers.

Probed at master 57107870c, macOS, Apple clang 21.

Every row holds in both load models.

  • class_def_builder answered constant writes only; a path write (A::B = Class.new do ... end) stayed a value, and desugar_class_new_blocks made an anonymous header of its block, which the write named at run time.
  • The anonymous class had no constant of its own: A::B.x was refused, a builder under A::B found no class there, visibility and attr_* calls in the block missed the class, and two builders of one leaf under two modules (A::B, Z::B) were qualified as constants but read back through a name no class had.
  • A block-less class value written to a path the constant pass renamed (X::B = Class.new beside a builder A::B) was named by its C name (X::X__B).

A path write under a namespace the program defines before it is a definition (analysis layer: one marking walk in analyze_desugar.c, read by the class_def_* accessors of #10736). mark_path_builders runs once, at the start of the analysis, on the names as the program wrote them. It re-derives "earlier, unconditionally, in the same file" beside the load record because it must run before desugar_class_new_blocks, and the record is built later. It walks each file's statements that run unconditionally (the top level, a class or module body, a builder's block) and adds each class or module a header or a builder defines there by its full Ruby path (a header's from its body on, a builder's once its block has run, as CRuby binds them). A statement the inline model spliced there from a require in a method, a block or a lambda (the parser's req_deferred stamp, #10736) runs only when that code does, so it adds nothing and is not marked: a namespace defined only in a file required from a method counts as defined before no write. A header under a namespace the walk does not know (module A::N with no A before it) adds nothing. A path write whose namespace resolves to a name already added, from the write's lexical scope as a header's path does (inh_resolve_path), is marked, and class_def_builder answers it when its value is a Class.new or Module.new call with a block; every other path write stays the value it was. The walk leaves unmarked a second write of one path, a write whose superclass is no class the walk or the core knows, a namespace whose first name both an enclosing scope and the top level define (the class pass resolves such a path by its leaf), and every path write of a program that defines const_added (CRuby calls it at the write; is_const_added_name, a new builtin_names.c predicate, which is_definition_hook_name now uses too). Once marked, the accessors, the scope walk, the load record and codegen take the write as #10736 taught them: the class is made at the write under its path, the block is its body, and codegen emits the block there.

The constant exists from the write on (the constant pass's presence fact, analyze_const.c). A path write's value was a constant that a read or defined? ahead of the write found unset. Its class is now in the class table from the start, so a path builder's class is one whose presence is a run-time fact (an_class_needs_presence), as a header's in a required file is. A read or a defined? that can run before the write completes asks the class's presence flag, which the write sets once its block has run (sp_class_present_N): ahead of the write, and in the builder's own block and the methods and procs it defines, since CRuby binds the constant only when the block returns. One the load record places after the write completes (elab_cmp of the read's point and the write's last statement, elab_point_done) reads the class as it is, with no flag, unless the record notes that the write may not have run (elab_point_may: a file loaded under a condition or from a block). The constant pass marks the program's own reads in the block (own_presence), so a reference to the class that a later pass makes of self there asks nothing. With no file, the flag's declaration is emitted before the files-only declarations return; with files it stays where it was. A header a path builder is written under (path_ns, the constant pass's mark on the enclosing classes of a path builder's class) is not defined in code the record places at load time ahead of its header either: BEGIN { p defined?(A) }, p defined?(G) before the require_relative of the file that defines G and a path builder under it, or a read in a method or a proc made before the header (elab_point_from, the point from which the read can run), asks the header's flag and answers nil, as does a read after such a header that may not have run. This is the general rule for header classes, restricted to those a path builder is written under, because the path write turns these programs from refused to compiled; every other header keeps its class-table answer, and defined?(A::B) before class A::B still answers "constant" as on master. The general rule (every header class, less singleton and synthesized ones) is a master bug of its own; widening it means dropping the restriction.

A block-less class value is named by its leaf as written (codegen_stmt.c). The path-write arm's class name reads the target's qc_orig_name, the leaf before the constant pass qualified it.

Answer changes (each program answered wrong on master): a path builder written twice (A::B = Class.new { } and later A::B = Class.new { } again), and a path builder beside a value path write of the same leaf under a value namespace (V = 1; V::B = Class.new { }, rescued): "unsupported constant path write", where master raised NameError for A::B.

Not covered, also on master:

  • A path write under a namespace the walk does not take stays the value write it is on master: an alias (V = A; V::B = Class.new { }), a builtin (Comparable::B), a computed one (m::B, self::B), under the graph model a namespace defined in another file (the inline model reads a require_relatived file's namespace as defined before), one under a condition, a loop, a method, a block or a rescue, or after the write, and the other cases the walk leaves unmarked above.
  • A header under a namespace no one defines (module A::N; end with no A) raises no NameError.
  • defined? of a header's class in code that runs before the header (BEGIN, top-level code before the file's require) answers "constant", where no path builder is written under the class.
  • A header under a namespace that is a value (V = 1; class V::B; end): no TypeError, and B is bound at the top level.
  • A namespace reassigned to a value (module A; end; A = 1) is refused for a builder as for a header.
  • A value constant written in a builder's block (Q = Class.new do R = Class.new end; p R) raises NameError for R.
  • A constant builder (X = Class.new do ... end) or a header in a file required under a condition that does not hold, or a constant builder written under one at the top level, answers defined? with "constant".
  • Under the inline model, a header a file required under a condition that does not hold defines, and a path write under it, answer defined? with "constant" (the graph model answers nil for those a path builder is written under).

C diff. In both load models against #10731's head, run from this branch's worktree: the 571 corpus programs that mention Class.new, Module.new, Struct.new, Data.define or a constant path write (the new tests among them), the 73 benchmarks and 10 probes that require a namespace's file from a method, a block or under a condition: 660 programs. All identical but the new tests and those probes (graph only), besides test/class_value_unnamed_beside_called_module.rb, whose C embeds the compiler's package path. Every benchmark's C is unchanged. make cident of this branch against master ee0bfce1a differs only in test/class_new_block_param.rb, whose change is #10731's (merged after ee0bfce1a), and test/class_new_path_write.rb is no longer refused.

Tests. test/class_new_path_write.rb groups the path writes: a class and a module under a module, a builder under a header path (A::N::C), a module builder an includer reads, one leaf under two modules from two builders and from a header and a builder, a builder under another path builder's class whose leaf another module's builder shares, two value namespaces that keep their TypeError, a block with attr_reader, private and protected, a block parameter, defined? and a read ahead of the write (also from a method called before it) and in the builder's own block (also from a method it defines), a BEGIN block that asks for the namespace, a header that reopens a path builder's class, and a block-less Class.new under another module beside a builder of the same leaf. test/class_new_path_write_may.rb requires a file that writes a path builder under a condition that does not hold: the class is not defined after the require. Both pass plain, under --int-overflow=promote and under SPINEL_GC_STRESS=1, in both load models. Master refuses the first and answers the second right; the second guards against a wrong answer an earlier draft of this branch gave. Against #10731's head (#10736 compiles every probe to the same C), the series' 100-program probe set moves 2 programs to right in both load models (c20, n27: inline right 68 -> 70, graph 69 -> 71) and changes no other line; of 150 programs on path writes and their namespaces, 57 move to right inline and 55 under graph (30 from wrong, 26 / 24 from refused, 1 from a C error), 3 from wrong to refused (above), 1 stays refused with another message (w10), and none other changes. Of 10 programs that require the file defining a path builder's namespace from a method, a block, a lambda or under a condition, 9 move from refused to right under graph and none changes inline (refused where master refuses, right where master is right, and the one plain require of a $LOAD_PATH file stays wrong as on master). Of 67 programs on conditional loads, methods and procs that read a namespace ahead of its header, and builder shapes in such files, 51 move from refused to right under graph and 29 inline, 4 / 2 from wrong to right, 1 (k.define_method in a path builder's block) from wrong to refused in both models, 1 stays refused inline with another message, and none other changes. The #10717 series' Struct and Data probe set keeps its 105 right in both load models, and the define_method loop set of #10729 changes no line. tools/load_graph_check.sh, make infer-test and tools/analysis_forms_check.sh pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Class and module builders created with Class.new or Module.new can now be assigned to nested constant paths, such as A::B. Their names and bodies are handled in the context of the target namespace.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of nested class and module definitions across load order, including cases where a namespace is not yet available or the target is not a class or module.

FrancescoK and others added 2 commits November 1, 2026 20:14
A path write that builds a class (`A::B = Class.new do ... end`) is to
become a definition the way a constant's builder is. This step teaches
the layers that read a definition through the class_def_* accessors to
take one, while no path write is a builder yet: builder_call_of answers
a path write only once it is marked as defined under a namespace the
program defines before it, and nothing marks one in this commit, so the
generated C does not change.

class_def_kinds lists path writes after the constant writes, and
class_def_module_kinds lists them too, since a Module.new path builder
is a module; class_def_path names a path builder's target and
class_def_body reads its block. The scope walk opens the class at the
write under the target's path (elab_rec_open), and a target the constant
pass qualified keeps its Ruby path there, as a header the class pass
qualified does. The load record takes a path builder's block as the
class's body (lr_frame, lr_record_stmt), and the graph model's autoload
check of a definition's scope reads the definition's path
(class_def_path) in place of a header's constant_path.
desugar_class_new_blocks keeps a path builder's block,
register_globals_consts interns no slot for it, codegen emits the block
at the write (emit_builder_write), and the block parameter row takes a
path builder's `|k|`.

Under the inline model the parser splices a file required in a method, a
block or a lambda ahead of the top-level statement around the call, where
its statements look as if they ran there. It now stamps them (and those
of the files spliced inside such a file) req_deferred, beside req_pop:
the site's ancestors (sp_req_site_place) say where the call stands, and
the PUSH/INSERT marker carries the fact to the line map, which keeps it
in the file's tier byte (SP_FILE_DEFERRED). Both stamps go through
sp_stamp_req_pop, which takes the req_pop stamp out of flatten_node.
Nothing reads the stamp yet.

…at the write

A path write that builds a class (`A::B = Class.new do ... end`,
`A::M = Module.new do ... end`) stayed a value: desugar_class_new_blocks
made an anonymous header of its block, and the write named the class at
run time. Its class methods were refused or lost (`A::B.x`), a builder
under it found no class there (`A::B::C`), and two builders of one leaf
under two modules shared one class.

mark_path_builders, run once at the start of the analysis on the names
as written, marks a path write whose namespace is a class or module the
program defines before it: resolved by its full Ruby path from the
write's lexical scope (inh_resolve_path, as a header's path is), defined
by a header or a builder whose statement, like the write's, runs
unconditionally (the top level, a class or module body, a builder's
block) earlier in the same file: a header's name counts from its body
on, a builder's once its block has run. A statement the inline model
spliced from a require in a method, a block or a lambda (the parser's
req_deferred stamp) runs only when that code does, so it neither defines
a namespace nor is a write the walk marks. A header under a namespace
the walk does not know defines nothing it knows. A second write of one
path, a superclass no class the walk or the core knows, a namespace
whose first name both an enclosing scope and the top level define, and a
program that defines const_added (which CRuby calls at the write) leave
the write unmarked. class_def_builder answers a marked path write, which
the accessors, the scope walk, the load record and codegen take as a
builder; every other path write stays the value it was.

The class's constant exists from the write on, as the value the write
made before did: a read or a defined? that can run before the write
completes, in its own block and in the methods and procs the block
defines too, asks the class's presence flag (an_class_needs_presence),
which the write sets once the block has run; one the record places after
the write completes reads the class as it is, unless the record notes
the write may not have run (in a file loaded under a condition or from a
block). The constant pass marks the program's own reads in the block
(own_presence), so a reference to the class the passes make of self
there asks nothing.

A header a path builder is written under (path_ns, the constant pass's
mark on the enclosing classes of a path builder's class) is not defined
in code that can run ahead of it (a BEGIN block, top-level code before
the require of its file, a method or a proc made before the header), nor
after it when the header may not have run. Such a read asks the header's
flag. This is the general rule restricted to those headers; any other
header class keeps its class-table answer.

A block-less class value written to a path the constant pass renamed
(`Z::B = Class.new` beside `A::B`) is named by its leaf as written
(qc_orig_name), not by its C name (`Z::Z__B`).

The parentheses around the deferred bit in sp_intern_file's tier merge
(spinel_parse.c, from the previous commit) are added here, so that
commit keeps the head its checks ran on.

The new nested-path Class.new/Module.new support can pick the wrong lowering for some require-based and reopened-class programs, giving behavior that differs from Ruby (a missing TypeError, or a constant seen before it is bound). These are narrow patterns, but they should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Preserve path-write presence tracking across a later header.

When A::B = Class.new { ... } is followed by class A::B < Object; end, elab_rec_open replaces B’s def_node with the header. The presence logic then no longer identifies B as a path-write class. A read of A::B inside the builder can therefore omit the presence check even though the constant is not bound until the builder completes.

Record the path-write origin separately from the replaceable def_node. Use that origin in an_class_needs_presence, const_class_presence, and an_class_presence_write.

Review comment at @src/analyze_const.c around lines 453 - 454:
Preserve the path-write origin independently of the replaceable def_node: a
later class header must not erase evidence that the class was created by a
constant-path write. Update an_class_needs_presence, const_class_presence, and
an_class_presence_write to consult this separate origin when determining
presence behavior, keeping the existing builder-time check for reads of the
path-written constant.

Confirmed, thanks. elab_rec_open swaps in a later header that names a superclass, and a Class.new with no argument names none, so class A::B < Object after A::B = Class.new do ... end replaced the definition. Reads before the write and inside the block then find the class. p defined?(A::B) before the write answers "constant" where CRuby answers nil, and A::B in the block no longer raises NameError. Without < Object the program answers right. A follow-up PR fixes it where the definition is recorded: a later header only reopens a builder's class and does not replace its definition. That keeps the presence logic reading one fact rather than a second origin field. The test covers this shape.

@FrancescoK Thanks for confirming the cause. Preserving the builder’s def_node in elab_rec_open addresses the finding without a separate origin field. My suggested field is not necessary with that approach.

The regression test should check both defined?(A::B) before the write and NameError inside the block, with the later class A::B < Object header present. The follow-up fix is not verified here.
