Speed of solve issue

I tried PushNav first time with the recommended hardware today. I had to slide both exposure and gain sliders all the way to the right and then I got enough stars (I am in Bortle 8 sky). After calibrating I was able to locate objects but the plate solving was anything but real time. It took a few seconds for each telescope push. I am using a Lenovo IdePad Windows 10 tablet. Perhaps it is not up to this task. I will try my M5 MacBook Pro next. I could not figure out how to use the arrows. Could you add more details and screen captures to illustrate how to use the arrows? Where are the direction numbers and what should the display show when on the target. For now, I watched the Stellarium screen to zero in on the target. To use the phone in the field, one has to have it and the laptop connected to a router, correct?

I tried again with a separate download. This time I used a Dell laptop and the star images now kept up with the movement of the tripod I was using. I am probably doing something wrong. The CMD-1 did not always work. Most of the time I was getting a beep. It seems that when it worked and I got close the arrow with the distance value stop changing as I moved the tripod. Also, the plate-solving was faster on the laptop, but not real time. Maybe my expectations are too high. I went back and forth between PushNav and Stelarium to zero in on the object. This took a lot of moves, but it probably would have been easier if I had managed to calibrate the directions.
I was also able to use the cellphone since I was at home. That worked fine and allowed me to place the laptop out of the way. I will try again with my MacBook Pro (M5).

@taskrov I am planning to change the plate-solving bits to a rust based library which will speed up processing multifold this weekend. I will keep you informed. But that move is mainly for people running it from a raspberry pi which has a fraction of processing power compared to a modern laptop.

Thought it will be helpful to you, I do want to understand why it is slow for you on a laptop. I get near real-time solves in my macbook air (m2), a mid tier windows laptop and linux. Can you share screenshots of the camera frame area? I want to see if there are enough stars and the quality of the stars.

I tested version 0.2.1 in Bortle 8+ sky. The update is faster and acceptable on my i7 10th gen laptop. I am still not sure how to use the guidance screen. I did the calibration and the movement of the camera matches on the Stellarium screen. Until I get close such that the target is in the circle with the line towards the center, I don't know which way to move the camera. In Stellarium it is clear.

I just tested 0.3.2 beta on a tripod. The plate solving is essentially real-real time now and very usable. I actually have a i7/13rd gen laptop. A big improvement! I was able to locate all objects (as seen on Stellarium) easiy. The program seems to check for network only on start-up. I had to restart after turning on WiFi late. The guidance needs to be more obvious. It seems opposite of what I would expect. The R/L distance numbers are great but they need to be more prominent, especially when displayed on cellphone or tablet. In fact, they should be in a huge font. Next I will try on my Dob. At an outreach event, having to use a laptop would be a challenge. It would be great if it ran on a cellphone that one could velcoro onto the OTA. Stiil, great piece of work.

Hi Arun, The smoke from Canadian fires has mostly cleared up and I took my Dob out to the field and tested PushNav. It has no problems with plate solving. There is a bug that leaves the arrow (not the direction lines) on the screen when restarting the calibration. I still cannot make sense of the guiding display. When the target is close and I get the circle then moving the telescope corresponds to the image position. I.e. Move the scope right moves the circle to the right and the same with up and down so it is easy to zero in on the target. I forgot to look at the L/R, U/D numbers for zeroing on the target. But that should be sufficient. The guiding display seems unnecessary. I had the laptop on a table next the scope. The usb wire was always getting in way; people were tripping over it. In my opinion the ideal solution would be to have the app on a phone that could be attached to the OTA and just guide by numbers. Stellarium would be optional. Good job, Tom
