Refs #3264 (the harness half; the one-Live-Activity ranking is the iOS client's).

Problem

As hadan8977 traced in #3264, a 1:1 job the bot hands to a teammate notified at the wrong moment:

  1. Early ping. The bot's turn ends with its hand-off line ("Mira is running the suite."). Because it's a direct turn, it sent "done", though nothing was finished.
  2. Results. The teammate settles and the parent resumes with "Results in from Mira".
  3. Silent result. The bot's reviewed final answer is an internal turn and only marked the thread unread. No notification.

So the one "done" came early, and the result arrived silently. The same happened when the person had queued a follow-up: the first turn's end pinged "done", though the queued message ran next.

Change

server/done-notice.ts decides, where turn.completed would send a direct turn's "done":

Turn end Before Now
Hands work off; teammates still owe results (coordinator.awaitingTeammateThreads()) "done" held, owed
A review that hands work off again (another round) quiet held, still owed
The review that ends an owed job quiet one "done", with the final answer
A review nobody held a "done" for (e.g. an incident review) quiet quiet (unchanged)
A message the person queued runs next (hasQueuedPersonMessage) "done" held; the queued turn notifies
Queued incident reports, teammates' asks, relays or unattended work run next "done" "done" (unchanged), since their turns may be quiet
Anything else (plain replies, routines, rooms, computer-selection turns) unchanged unchanged
  • Only the person's own queued message holds "done". A queued incident report's turn is quiet by design ("adds no push for answering reports that waited"), so holding for it would leave the person with no "done" at all; incidents.e2e covers this. server/steer-queue.ts gains hasQueuedPersonMessage: a queued item with no peerAsk, unattended, relay or fromApp.
  • New person turn: clears whatever a stopped or abandoned hand-off still owed, so it can never ping later.
  • Failed review: clears the debt quietly; turn-failed already tells the person.
  • Kept on purpose:
    • "Results in from …" (delegation-settled, 203d6ad), which stops a chat sitting silent while the bot reads results;
    • quiet incident reviews (a741103);
    • mention;
    • bot.notifications === false, quiet turns, and per-device "done" switches.
  • Size: server/index.ts wiring is line-neutral (15,794, as on main).

Tests

  • server/done-notice.test.ts:
    • a plain turn notifies;
    • a hand-off holds, then the review notifies once;
    • a second-round review keeps holding;
    • an incident review stays quiet;
    • a failed review clears quietly;
    • a queued follow-up holds;
    • a new person turn clears the debt;
    • routines are untouched.
  • Updated e2e sequences (they asserted the early "done"):
    • notification-routing.e2e: Results in → done "woke after delegation: saw the result";
    • long-running-chief.e2e: three multi-round jobs now end in one "done" carrying A-FINAL, APPROVALS-FINAL and STALL-FINAL respectively, with no "done" at any hand-off.
  • steer-e2e: a queued follow-up gives one "done", for the queued turn.
  • incidents.e2e: unchanged and passing (reports that waited still add no push).
  • Locally:
    • 169 key tests pass after rebasing on current main, across done-notice, notification-*, long-running-chief, direct-coordination, delta-context, main-thread, notify*, steer*, mausbot-notifications, automation-reports and coordinator;
    • the full server and shared suites: 1,228 of 1,229 files and 18,126 tests pass; the one failing file, harness/registry.test.ts (npm engine install), fails the same 2 tests on main on this machine;
    • typecheck and lint.

Thanks to @hadan8977 for tracing the hand-off sequence in #3264.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Completion notifications now wait until work and teammate reviews are finished, so they include the final answer and arrive after related result or approval updates.
    • Notifications are held when a follow-up message is queued and reflect that follow-up when the turn completes.
    • Prevented duplicate completion notifications for repeated reviews.

A turn that hands work to teammates sent "done" with its hand-off line,
and the bot's real answer after the results came in only marked the thread
unread, so the one ping came early and the result arrived silently. A turn
that a queued follow-up continued sent "done" too, before the job ended.

A turn's "done" is now held while its teammates still owe results or a
queued message runs next. The answer that ends the job (the review after
the last round, or the queued turn) sends the one "done", with that answer.
"Results in from ..." is unchanged, and a review nobody held a "done" for,
such as an incident review, stays quiet. A new person turn drops anything a
stopped hand-off still owed. The rules live in server/done-notice.ts.

Walkthrough

Done notifications now account for teammate handoffs, queued person follow-ups, review outcomes, and person-turn starts. The server uses a per-thread helper to decide whether to notify, hold, or stay quiet.

Changes: Done notification timing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Decision rules and queued-message detection
server/done-notice.ts, server/steer-queue.ts, server/done-notice.test.ts
The helper tracks held notices by thread and returns a verdict based on turn outcome, routine status, teammate waits, and queued person messages. Tests cover verdicts and hold-state changes.
Turn completion integration
server/index.ts, server/long-running-chief.e2e.test.ts, server/notification-routing.e2e.test.ts, server/steer-e2e.test.ts
The server uses the helper when a turn ends and clears held state when a person turn starts. End-to-end tests check notification order and content.

  • OpenMausBot issue 3264 requests one done notification after a task finishes. This change holds done notifications during teammate handoffs, while the issue’s live-activity portion remains separate.
  • OpenMausBot issue 3207 describes queued person messages during a long-running tool. This change detects queued person messages and holds the done notification, but does not change delivery or Stop behavior.
  • OpenMausBot issue 3333 requests per-thread notification suppression for bot-opened and teammate handoff threads. This change adjusts completion notification timing but does not implement per-thread mute.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review b5f76

This change delays "done" notifications until a job is actually finished. In one case, a person's queued follow-up can still produce a second "done" for the same job, which defeats the purpose of the change. After a server restart in the middle of a hand-off, the final "done" can also be missed. Fix the queued-follow-up case before merging; the restart case is a narrower edge.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(notify): one "done" when a job is really finished" matches the main change: direct-turn "done" notifications are now held during teammate hand-offs or queued person messages, and one "done" is sent when the owed job actually ends. It is specific and conventional, and it names the scope (notify) and the behavior change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. It covers what changed (a decision table and a list of changes in server/done-notice.ts and steer-queue.ts), why (the early "done" and silent result problem traced in #3264), and how it was verified (new unit tests, updated e2e sequences, local test counts, typecheck and lint). The Screenshots section is omitted, which is acceptable because this is not a UI change. The checklist is not ticked, and the description does not confirm the macOS-gating, dist-server, or secrets items. Those items are mostly not relevant to this change, so the description is mostly complete.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 6 files. Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Hold an owed review when a person message is queued.

If a person queues a message during a review, this branch returns "notify" before queuedFollowUp runs. The queued message can then finish and produce a second "done" notification. Check the queued follow-up before consuming the review’s held notice.
