Foundation Phase: Complete Project Setup for FRED API Client

Summary

This PR establishes the complete foundation for @mjesuele/fred-client, a TypeScript client for the Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) API. Following a specification-first approach using Spec Kit, this includes comprehensive project structure, type system, documentation, and developer tooling.

Status: ✅ Ready for Review - All 70 foundation tasks completed

  6. ✅ Security - Automatic API key redaction in errors
  7. ✅ Observability - Structured errors, telemetry hooks prepared

Validation

All quality checks passing:

✅ npm run typecheck # Zero TypeScript errors (strict mode)
✅ npm run lint # Zero ESLint errors
✅ npm run build # Generates dist/ with ESM + CJS
✅ npm run format:check # All files formatted

Success Criteria:

  • ✅ 6 FRED categories represented (all namespaces present)

Testing

Current Status:

  • Type system fully tested via TypeScript compiler (strict mode)
  • All builds successful (ESM + CJS)
  • No unit tests yet (implementation phase)

Next Steps:

  • Implementation phase will add comprehensive test suite
  • Fixture-based testing with Vitest
  • Integration tests with FRED API

Documentation Quality

Highlights:

  • Every public interface has TSDoc comments
  • All namespace methods link to FRED API documentation
  • 3 complete usage examples with real-world scenarios
  • Consistency checklists for maintainers
  • Quick navigation (all docs ≤2 clicks from README)

Dependencies

Runtime: None (zero runtime dependencies)

Development:

  • typescript@^5.9.0 - Type system
  • tsup@^8.0.0 - Build tool (esbuild)
  • eslint@^9.0.0 + @typescript-eslint@^8.0.0 - Linting
  • prettier@^3.5.0 - Formatting
  • vitest@^2.0.0 - Testing framework
  • @types/node@^22.0.0 - Node.js types

Performance

  • Zero runtime overhead (no dependencies)
  • Dual build output: ~8KB total (ESM + CJS minified)
  • Type-only imports for tree-shaking

Security

  • Automatic API key redaction in all error contexts
  • No secrets in codebase
  • Secure defaults for all configuration options

Reviewer Notes

What to Review

  1. Type System - Check type definitions match FRED API structure
  2. Documentation - Verify docs are clear and comprehensive
  3. Code Quality - Review ESLint/Prettier configuration
  4. Structure - Confirm directory layout matches best practices
  5. Templates - Review PR/issue templates for usability

What NOT to Review

  • Implementation - This is stubs only, implementation comes next
  • Tests - No tests yet (implementation phase)
  • Performance - No runtime code yet

Constitutional Questions

  • Does the structure support zero runtime dependencies? ✅
  • Is 1:1 FRED mapping achievable with this design? ✅
  • Are security defaults enforced? ✅

Next Steps

After merging this PR:

  1. Implementation Phase Specification

    • Use /speckit.specify to define implementation tasks
    • HTTP client implementation
    • Namespace method implementations
    • Retry, rate limiting, caching logic
  2. Test Suite

    • Fixture-based unit tests
    • Integration tests with FRED API
    • Type testing
  3. First Release

    • Complete implementation
    • Publish v0.1.0 to npm

Metrics

  • Documentation: 6,972 lines across 11 files
  • Source Files: 15 TypeScript files
  • Tasks Completed: 70/70 (100%)
  • Test Coverage: 0% (foundation only)
  • Build Size: ~8KB (minified)
  • Runtime Dependencies: 0

Questions?

  • Why so much documentation? This follows Spec Kit methodology - comprehensive specs before implementation
  • Why zero runtime dependencies? Constitutional principle - use native Node.js APIs only
  • Why string-based dates? Timezone safety and serialization predictability (see docs/api/dates.md)
  • Why stubs? Foundation first, implementation next (clean separation of concerns)

Ready to merge? This foundation provides a complete, production-ready starting point for implementation. All quality checks pass, documentation is comprehensive, and the structure follows best practices.
