Binary format

May be one could provide a few functions to translate binary format ? At least the upper part reading the rows and columns in binary result ?

Please feel free to contribute any functions that could be of general interest when dealing with the binary format. I unfortunately am not actively developing the library myself anymore, but will merge contributions for now.
