The CLI stores your Linear API key locally in ~/.linear-cli-agents/config.json with:
- File permissions set to
600(owner read/write only) - Atomic writes to prevent corruption
Alternatively, use the LINEAR_API_KEY environment variable to avoid storing credentials on disk.
- Never commit your API key to version control
- Use environment variables in CI/CD pipelines
- Rotate your API key if you suspect it has been compromised
- Review permissions granted to your Linear API key
