Problem

VLLMBackend._one asks the generate server for logprobs=K with allowed_token_ids set to the K label ids, and maps the returned top_logprobs back to ids. A label that is not among them gets -30.0:

return np.array([by_id.get(tid, -30.0) for tid in ids], dtype=np.float64)

The module docstring assumes this cannot happen ("vLLM reports logprobs after its logit processors, so the K entries are exactly the labels"). With vLLM's default settings it can. --logprobs-mode defaults to raw_logprobs, and in vllm/v1/sample/sampler.py the raw logprobs are computed before apply_logits_processors, which is where allowed_token_ids_mask is applied. So the top K come from the full vocabulary. A label outside the vocabulary top K drops out, and a non-label token takes its place.

I hit this on vllm-metal 0.30.0 with Qwen3-8B on a 4-option choice: " C" was missing from top_logprobs while " The" was present. The request still sampled a label, so nothing looked wrong. The backend filled C with -30.0. Every level softmaxes the row, so the result is a confident distribution over the other three options, with no error and no warning.

Change

  • _one raises LabelTokenError (the existing readout error) that names the missing ids and the tokens the server did return, and points at --logprobs-mode processed_logprobs.
  • The generate-server example in the module docstring now passes --logprobs-mode processed_logprobs, and the docstring says why.
  • Two tests use a stub /v1/completions server: one checks that labels are read back by id, and one checks that a label missing from top_logprobs raises.

With processed_logprobs, the logprobs are taken after the mask, so the K entries are the labels again and the new error does not fire.

Tests

ruff check anyjev bench demo scripts space tests # All checks passed!
pytest -q # 111 passed, 2 skipped

The new tests need transformers for the backend import, like the existing vLLM tests (pytest.importorskip).

AI assistance

AI assistance (Claude Code) was used to trace the cause in the vLLM sampler, write the change and tests, and draft this description. I reviewed every changed line and ran the tests above.

…illing -30

vLLM's default --logprobs-mode, raw_logprobs, computes logprobs before
allowed_token_ids masks the vocabulary (vllm/v1/sample/sampler.py), so
the top K returned for a K-label request can hold other tokens in place
of labels. The backend filled every missing label with -30.0, which
turns into a confident wrong answer with no symptom.

Raise LabelTokenError naming the missing ids and the tokens that were
returned, and document --logprobs-mode processed_logprobs in the
generate-server example.

- ROADMAP / README (EN, zh): SGLang done, off the help-wanted list
- VLLMBackend docs: vLLM's default raw logprobs can leave a label out (seen on 0.17.1 with
