Closes #65

Problem and user impact

There was no way to run the whole SpaceApp from source: dev:api, dev:web and dev:worker each expect PostgreSQL, Temporal, the CLI host, secrets and dozens of SPACE_* paths to already exist (ONB-001).

Change

npm run dev:stack (scripts/dev-stack.mjs):

  • Starts PostgreSQL (pgvector) and Temporal in Docker using the digests parsed from packages/run-spaceapp/templates/compose.yml (not copied), runs the migrations, then the API (tsx watch), the Vite dev server, the worker (tsc --watch + node --watch) and the CLI host from source; prints the URL and the one-time owner setup token.
  • -- down stops everything; -- reset removes only the containers, volumes and .dev-stack/ it created; also status and rebuild.
  • Own compose project, git-ignored .dev-stack/ state directory, ports 4920–4923 by default (overridable by env), all bound to 127.0.0.1; ports 4910/4911 are refused.
  • Secrets generated per state directory with mode 0600; only the setup token is printed; the normal owner setup is used, not the dev-login shortcut.
  • The opencode-ai version pinned in the Dockerfile is installed into the state directory; the image's CLI wrapper is rendered against the state directory. deploy/docker/opencode-first-run.mjs honours SPACE_MEMORY_ROOT so it does not write to /var/lib/spaceapp.
  • A process that exits stops the stack and names the process; /readyz failures are reported per dependency.
  • apps/web/vite.config.ts: dev proxy target configurable (SPACE_WEB_API_ORIGIN) and proxies pane WebSockets.
  • CI: .github/workflows/dev-stack.yml + scripts/dev-stack-ci.mjs (ubuntu-latest, no TTY: up, /readyz, owner setup over HTTP, open a CLI pane, check running, reset, assert nothing left).
  • CONTRIBUTING.md: "Run the full app from source" section with ports, troubleshooting, and macOS (Docker Desktop / Colima) and WSL2 notes.

Verification — what was and was NOT run

Not executed (stated plainly): the Docker part (PostgreSQL + Temporal containers), the migrations against them, /readyz reporting ok: true, owner setup in a browser, hot reload of the full stack, scripts/dev-stack-ci.mjs and the new GitHub workflow, and any run on macOS or WSL2. The machine used has no Docker. This PR therefore does not yet contain the Linux + macOS/WSL2 terminal output the acceptance criteria require; the new dev-stack workflow is expected to produce the Linux run in this PR's CI, and I will add its output and a macOS or WSL2 transcript when available.

Executed on Linux x86_64, Node v22.21.1, npm 10.9.4:

Command Result
node --test scripts/tests/dev-stack.test.mjs 17/17 passed
related script tests and the public script suite 0 failed (2 skipped, pre-existing)
apps/web Vite config test 2/2 passed
npm run check exit 0
ESLint on changed files exit 0
git diff --check, npm run hygiene:preflight passed
npm run dev:stack with no Docker fails fast: docker could not start: spawnSync docker ENOENT
SPACE_DEV_STACK_API_PORT=4910 npm run dev:stack refused: collides with an installed SpaceApp
npm run dev:stack -- status / unknown command correct messages

Partial live checks, without Docker: the pinned OpenCode installed into a state directory and ran through the rendered wrapper (opencode v2.0.32, credential=absent); the from-source CLI host answered ping and a PTY session rendered OpenCode's TUI with no provider account; stopSharedServers() left no opencode process after CLI host shutdown; node --watch-path restarted on change. These were done before a machine move and their raw log files were lost; they are reported from the session record, not from attached logs.

  • Relevant automated tests pass (unit-level, see above).
  • Linux coverage listed (no Docker). macOS / WSL2: not run.
  • UI changes: only the Vite proxy config; no browser evidence captured.
  • Every commit has a Signed-off-by: line (DCO 1.1); MIT License.
  • No credentials, tokens, personal memory, customer data, private paths or runtime state.
  • Documentation updated.
  • Security / resource / rollback: contributor-only script; loopback-only ports; 0600 secrets in a git-ignored directory; reset removes only what it created. No changes to published images or the run-spaceapp launcher.

AI-assisted; only what is listed as executed was executed. The "Verify export provenance" step is expected to fail on this fork PR, per the issue.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a development stack command to start, stop, reset, rebuild, and check the full app from source.
    • Added configurable local API proxy settings for the web app.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for running and troubleshooting the development stack.
  • Tests
    • Added automated checks for stack setup, readiness, and cleanup.

One command starts PostgreSQL (pgvector) and Temporal in Docker with the
digests pinned in packages/run-spaceapp/templates/compose.yml, runs the
migrations, then the API (tsx watch), the Vite dev server, the worker
(tsc --watch + node --watch) and the CLI host from source. down stops it,
reset removes only the containers, volumes and .dev-stack/ it created.

- Own compose project, git-ignored state directory and ports 4920-4923,
all on 127.0.0.1; 4910/4911 are refused.
- Secrets generated per state directory with mode 0600; only the setup
token is printed; owner setup, not the dev-login shortcut.
- OpenCode pinned from the Dockerfile, installed into the state directory;
the image's CLI wrapper is rendered against the state directory.
- A process that exits stops the stack with its name; /readyz failures are
  reported by dependency.
- Vite's dev proxy target is configurable (SPACE_WEB_API_ORIGIN) and
  proxies the pane WebSockets.
- Dev stack CI workflow and CONTRIBUTING section.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #65 has coding requirements, and the reviewed changes implement them. scripts/dev-stack.mjs renders digest-pinned PostgreSQL and Temporal services from the existing compose template, creates isolated loopback-bound state and ports, generates mode-0600 secrets, starts the source services, supports lifecycle commands, reports process failures, and enables workflows. The Vite proxy, OpenCode state and wrapper handling, CI script/workflow, tests, and contributor documentation cover the remaining implementation requirements. The reported Docker and platform runs are manual verification evidence, not missing code requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #65. The Vite proxy changes support the source stack. The SPACE_MEMORY_ROOT change supports state-local OpenCode operation. The workflow, tests, ignore rule, package script, lifecycle script, and documentation directly support setup, operation, verification, or cleanup. No unrelated feature, published-image change, launcher change, browser service, or other provider CLI change is shown.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 29.03% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 31 functions across 6 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Stop the CI process group before running reset.

The CI job runs on Ubuntu, but spawn does not create a detached process group. During startup, up runs docker compose ... up --detach --wait through spawnSync, before it writes the PID file. If startup exceeds the readiness timeout, reset can remove the compose resources while that child still runs.

Start up in a detached process group. Send SIGTERM to the group, wait for stackExited, then send SIGKILL to the group if the bounded wait expires. Run reset only after the second wait completes.

in a detached process group. Before invoking `reset`, send SIGTERM to the group
and wait for `stackExited`; if that bounded wait expires, send SIGKILL and wait
again before proceeding to reset.

Validate the temporary socket directory before starting the CLI host.

When the socket path is long, socketDir is a deterministic directory under $TMPDIR. Recursive mkdir does not change an existing directory's owner or mode. The CLI host also creates the parent without validation, removes a stale socket, and binds with server.listen(options.socketPath). Clients connect to that path without peer authentication.

If another local user pre-creates this directory with write access and can determine the configured state path, that user can replace the socket pathname or race stale-socket removal to intercept future clients. Validate ownership and directory type, then enforce mode 0700 before starting the CLI host.

Set the API UI origin to the dev-stack web origin.

The default dev-stack web port is 4921, but the API defaults browserEvidenceTargetOrigin to http://127.0.0.1:4911. Requests through the Vite proxy can therefore fail the API's origin checks with 403.

Ignore restart for a child that is already restarting.

restart is called by the rebuild watcher. If a second rebuild stamp arrives before the old child has exited, children.get(spec.name) still returns the old child. The code then adds a second exit listener. When the child exits, both listeners call start(spec). The first new child is no longer tracked, and it keeps its port. The second child then fails on the same port, which stops the whole stack with "exited unexpectedly".

Confirm that the recorded pid is a dev-stack process before using it.

readPid checks only that the pid is alive (process.kill(pid, 0)). The pid file lives in .dev-stack/ and survives a SIGKILL, a crash or a reboot. If another process then holds that pid, up wrongly reports "already running". down and reset send SIGTERM to the unrelated process.

Check the command line of the pid, as stopSharedServers already does for OpenCode.

Fix the port preflight: it fails against the stack's own containers.

up stops only the supervised processes when you press Ctrl-C. It also stops them when a later step fails, such as buildLibraries. The PostgreSQL and Temporal containers keep running and keep ports postgres and temporal bound on 127.0.0.1. On the next npm run dev:stack, portFree returns false for those two ports. The command then fails with "Port 4922 (postgres) is in use. Set SPACE_DEV_STACK_POSTGRES_PORT ...". This message is wrong, because the port is held by this project's own container. The user must run down first, and the message does not say so.

Skip the postgres and temporal checks when the compose project already has containers.
