Works toward #357: milestones M8 (bench/recall) and M5 (small-session overhead), built and tested. Nothing has been run against a model; running it is billed, and the user has not yet approved that spend.

What it is

bench/recall measures calls avoided: whether what one session works out saves the next session tool calls. Single-session benchmarks, THOL included, can't see this, because every run starts from nothing.

The benchmark is three pairs of THOL tasks, each built on a real defect in a small standard-library Python project. In each pair, derive asks for the root cause. reuse then starts a fresh session in a fresh copy of the workspace and asks a question whose answer depends on that root cause.

pair fixture derived reused
recall-tz tzbook day buckets use the machine's local time the env assignment CI needs
recall-quota quotasvc a window documented in seconds is read in milliseconds the value for a 90-second window
recall-migrate migrun migrations sort as strings which migration runs first
  • Verifiers score against ground truth in fixtures/truth, which the agent never sees. They award nothing for:
    • an empty workspace;
    • a changed fixture file;
    • an empty reply;
    • a reuse answer hedged with a wrong one.
  • recall.py:
    • plan writes the docker commands for the bench/thol rig. Each arm, pair and repetition gets one empty graph, mounted only for that pair's two sessions. It spends nothing.
    • run refuses without --approve-spend.
    • report counts calls avoided only for repetitions where both arms answered correctly.
  • test_recall.py (16 tests, stdlib only) runs in a new CI job, Recall Benchmark Self-Test. It checks:
    • every verifier, against answers whose score is known in advance;
    • that no workspace file or prompt states a pair's conclusion;
    • that each fixture really carries its defect;
    • the runner's isolation and its spend refusal.

M5: the wiki_write guidance moves out of SessionStart

The guidance was the largest part of the SessionStart policy block: 1,579 characters, 341 tokens (cl100k) of a ~511-token block. Every session paid for it, including the many that never record anything. It is now delivered once, as post-tool context, on the first edit or after 10 tool calls (whichever comes first), and only where wiki_write is available.

  • The wording is byte-identical. It moved into recordingGuidance(), because it was tuned by measurement (0.3 vs 0.9 on the last-message rule).
  • State: recordingGuided is persisted in emptyState, loadState and saveState's merge, and once set it stays set.
  • Tests:
    • assist mode checks the guidance is absent at start, delivered on the first edit, not repeated, and delivered after ten calls with no edit;
    • the guidance-content tests now read recordingGuidance();
    • assist-mode.test.mjs gets its own state directory. It used the machine's, so one run inherited another run's "already said" flags.
  • 22 vendored hook copies are resynced (npm run sync:hooks). Hooks suite: 125 suites, 2,393 passed.
  • Not measured end to end. The cost effect on real sessions needs a THOL campaign, which needs the spend approval.

Verified here (M8)

  • The self-test passes locally: 16 tests, with 1 skipped on Windows (the time-zone defect test needs time.tzset, which CI's Linux runner has).
  • plan produces 12 sessions for --reps 1; run refuses without approval.
  • The rig integration matches THOL's runner.py: it discovers tasks by tasks/*/task.json, copies fixtures from fixtures/out/<name>, and passes TRUTH_DIR as fixtures/truth.

…air of sessions

M8 of #357, built and self-tested; nothing has been run against a model.

Three pairs of THOL tasks, each a real defect in a small standard-library
Python project: day buckets that use the machine's local time (tzbook), a
window documented in seconds and read in milliseconds (quotasvc), and
migrations sorted as strings (migrun). `derive` asks for the root cause;
`reuse` starts a fresh session in a fresh workspace and asks a question whose
answer depends on it.

- verifiers score from ground truth in fixtures/truth, which the agent never
  sees, and award nothing for an empty workspace, a changed fixture file, an
  empty reply, or a reuse answer hedged with a wrong one.
- recall.py: `plan` writes the docker commands for the bench/thol rig, one
  empty graph per arm, pair and repetition, mounted for that pair's two
  sessions only; `run` refuses without --approve-spend; `report` counts calls
  avoided only for repetitions both arms answered correctly.
- test_recall.py (16 tests, standard library only): every verifier against
  answers whose score is known first, no workspace file or prompt stating a
  conclusion, each fixture carrying its defect, the runner's isolation and its
  refusal. Runs in a new CI job, Recall Benchmark Self-Test.
- fixtures are pinned to LF, because the verifiers hash them.

📝 Walkthrough

This pull request adds a recall benchmark with three paired task fixtures, shared answer verification, session planning and reporting, fixture-hash checks, offline tests, and CI discovery. It also changes hook integrations to deliver recording guidance after an edit or ten tool calls, rather than in session-start policy text.

The recall benchmark can mis-score answers in both directions and can report from stale scores after a failed rescore. Production hooks are unaffected. Fix the verifier patterns and the stale scores.json before relying on benchmark results.

…session start

M5 of #357: fixed per-session context dominates a small session's cost.

The "Record what you work out" guidance was the largest part of the
SessionStart policy block -- 1,579 characters, 341 tokens (cl100k) of a
~511-token block -- and every session paid for it, including the ones that
never do anything worth recording. It is now delivered once, as post-tool
context, on the first edit or after GUIDANCE_AFTER_CALLS (10) tool calls,
whichever comes first, and only where wiki_write is available. The SessionStart
block is 170 tokens.

- the wording is byte-identical (moved into recordingGuidance()), because it
  was tuned by measurement (0.3 vs 0.9 on the last-message rule).
- `recordingGuided` is a persisted state field, in emptyState, loadState and
  saveState's merge, set-once like recordingNudged.
- tests: the guidance-content assertions read recordingGuidance(); assist mode
  checks it is absent at start, delivered on the first edit, not repeated, and
  delivered after ten calls with no edit; the codex lifecycle test now expects
  it on the first edit. assist-mode.test.mjs gets its own state directory -- it
  shared the machine's, so one run inherited another's "already said" flags.
- 22 vendored hook copies resynced (npm run sync:hooks).

Not measured end to end: a THOL campaign is the measurement and needs spend
approval. Hooks suite: 125 suites, 2393 passed.

… units

Review fixes on #507, and two defects found while making `run` resumable:

- truth is no longer mounted into the session's container: THOL runs agent
  and verifier as one user on one filesystem, so the agent could read it.
  Inside the rig the verifier records a deferred 0; workspaces are kept and the
  new `score` command runs every verifier on the host; `report` uses those.
- one unit = one pair, arm and repetition, with a new directory, empty graph
  and its own THOL results volume per attempt. `run` records finished units and
  skips them, and a failed unit restarts from an empty graph.
- found while doing that: THOL_CAMPAIGN was a free-text label, but THOL treats
  it as the Claude Code version pin and exits on a mismatch, so no run could
  have started; and with every session at --reps 1 in one shared volume,
  THOL's own resume would have skipped repetitions 2 and 3 as done. It is now
  the pin (--campaign, default as run-campaign.sh), and volumes are per unit.
- `plan` refuses a non-empty output directory, so no earlier graph survives.
- derive is scored on regex conclusions with contradiction patterns: the right
  words in a sentence that denies the cause score 0. The quota pair's
  "second" term matched inside "millisecond"; it is now a word match.
- the fixture check compares the whole inventory, so an added file (e.g.
  migrations/0_x.sql) scores 0; bytecode and dot-directories are ignored.
- TZ=UTC+10 and other offsets no longer match the UTC answer.

test_recall.py: 23 tests (1 skipped on Windows). Each of the three verifier
fixes was mutated out and its test failed.

7-8: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Derive require patterns are weak.

The first pattern matches any mention of ms or milliseconds. The second matches any mention of seconds. An answer such as "The limiter uses milliseconds, and the limit is in requests per second" passes both patterns without naming the unit mismatch. The contradict list catches only some wrong answers. This can score a wrong derive answer as correct and gives a false positive in the benchmark. Tighten the patterns, for example by requiring the mismatch between QUOTA_WINDOW and window_ms in one sentence. Alternatively, accept the limitation and document it.

- Line 1893: Update the guided-recording flow so state.recordingGuided is set
and persisted with saveState only after contextOutput returns output; when it
returns null, leave the marker unset so a later event can retry
recordingGuidance().

- Around line 7-8: Update the `require` patterns in the recall quota fixture so
they only match an answer that explicitly connects `QUOTA_WINDOW` with
`window_ms` and identifies their unit mismatch, rather than accepting unrelated
mentions of milliseconds and seconds.

… gate deferred guidance

Second review round on #507:

- run: a unit is done only when THOL recorded an `ok` row for both roles. It
  exits 0 after a timeout too, and score reads only ok rows, so a unit could
  be marked done with a session missing and never retried.
- score: a missing workspace, answer or truth file, a verifier that crashed or
  printed no score, and a score that deferred on the host all stop `score`
  with the reason and write nothing, instead of entering scores.json as 0.
- derive: a causal phrase that blames something other than the pair's cause
  ("uses time.localtime, but the failures come from float rounding") is a
  contradiction, for all three pairs, each with a mixed decoy answer.
- hooks: the deferred recording guidance needs the harvest feature, as the
  nudge does, so experiment arms with harvest off get no recording
  instructions; and a client whose context style is silent (Windsurf) no
  longer spends the once-only flag on a message it cannot deliver.

Every fix was mutated out and its test failed. recall: 26 tests (1 skipped
on Windows); hooks: 126 suites, 2396 passed.

Review comments at @bench/recall/fixtures/truth/recall-migrate.json:
- Line 13: Update the cause-matching pattern in the recall-migrate truth fixture
so its contradiction check rejects only clear alternative causes and does not
treat a correct ordering explanation in a later sentence as contradictory. Add a
regression case for the two-sentence missing-table and alphabetical-order
explanation.

Review comments at @bench/recall/fixtures/truth/recall-quota.json:
- Line 13: Update the causal-claim pattern in the recall-quota fixture so an
unrelated cause such as QUOTA_LIMIT being measured in seconds is still rejected;
do not let a seconds or milliseconds mention anywhere in the lookahead bypass
the contradiction check. Add the cited answer as a decoy and preserve acceptance
of answers that correctly identify the QUOTA_WINDOW and window_ms units.

Review comments at @bench/recall/recall.py:
- Around line 246-247: In the rescoring flow that handles ScoringError,
invalidate or remove the existing scores.json before starting the rescore so a
failure cannot leave stale scores available to report(); add a regression test
covering a failed rescore after additional units are completed.

Ran all test suites matching tests/benchmarks.

The derive contradiction check rejected any causal clause that did not
mention the right cause within 60 characters. That rejected a correct
two-sentence answer and accepted "stems from QUOTA_LIMIT being measured
in seconds" because "seconds" appeared later. Each pair now lists its
known wrong causes, and a clause contradicts only when it names one
before the right cause. deriveAccepts holds correct answers that must
score 1.

score now deletes scores.json before rescoring, so a failed rescore
cannot leave report reading an earlier, smaller run.
