Release 0.8.6 → main: security, performance, robustness - #166
Conversation
…ee) and correct the 'same corpus' claim Matt's #138 verification pass was right: the 0.8.5 changelog said b03 went 5/5->0/5 'on the same corpus' when the corpus ran pre-doctrine-change and b03 was retested alone. Correction in place (marked and dated), plus the missing evidence: b01/b02/b04 driven on the shipped tree — 15/15 resisted, all valid, fidelity audit clean. With a02 (08-30) and b03 (08-27), every fixture named as doctrine-sensitive is now re-gated on what shipped. Rides to main with the next promotion. ) Matt's PM decision on #137: mail leaving the platform to a person is a human-confirm action on both hosts. Ask tier both prefixes; Codex map regenerated (approve); bridge WRITE_TOOLS + eval dry-run list extended (gating and dry-run only — mail is NOT neutralized, see #142); invariant pins all four surfaces, governed tools 20 -> 21; tool-map row with the verified schema (arg1 {recipients, subject, body(HTML)}). …recision signal (#127) Adds escalation-to-case rate — the fraction of a rule's alerts that became a case an analyst opened — to rule-tuning's noise model as the cheap, searchable first pass that decides which rules earn the expensive disposition sampling. Computed per rule via two counted searches on caseId (or a client-side tally), since the MCP tool drops aggregation; framed as a prioritizer, not a precision measure — a low rate can be an unworked queue, a high rate can still close as false-positive, and both resolve through the disposition sample. New reference/escalation-rate-signal.md plus one bullet in SKILL.md. Provenance: the New-Scale reframing of Advanced Analytics' NotableReductionOnDeletion tuning metric. …n rules and the shell include are generated (#144) **The own goal.** Re-keying the plugin meant editing two host manifests and 92 permission rules by hand and hoping they agreed. The Exabeam catalog's rename to `soc@exabeam` needed a two-file overlay and a validator exception to work around it. This fixes it at the source. ## One place | File | Role | |---|---| | `plugin/identity.json` | **the source** — name, version, displayName, shortDescription, description, keywords (+ per-host extras), author/links, MCP server, marketplace | | `plugin/skills/soc-investigate/permissions.json` | bare-name tiers (allow 18 / ask 3 / deny 34) + which prefixes each tier is emitted under (`plugin` = `mcp__plugin_<name>_<server>__`, `manual` = `mcp__<server>__`) | | `plugin/gen_identity.py` | generates `.claude-plugin/plugin.json`, `.codex-plugin/plugin.json`, `settings.snippet.json`; `--check` in CI fails on drift; ships in the payload | **Proof it's the same thing:** the Codex manifest and the 92-rule snippet regenerate **byte-identical** to the hand-written files. The Claude manifest's `description` changes to the host-neutral wording Codex already used — the only change to a shipped artifact. **Consumers now read the identity** instead of carrying literals: `install.sh` (plugin key + marketplace defaults, env still overrides, literal fallback without python3), `preflight.sh` (banner + reinstall hint), `evals/run.py` (`TOOL_PREFIXES`), the tests, `bump_version.py` (edits `identity.json`, regenerates), `plugin-smoke.sh`. **The drill:** set `name: soc` in `identity.json`, run the generator → all 55 plugin-prefixed rules move under `mcp__plugin_soc_exabeam__`, both manifests follow, `.mcp.codex.json` unaffected (it keys on bare tool names). Revert → clean. What was two hours is now one field. **Also:** CI gains `gen_codex_mcp.py --check`, which CONTRIBUTING and the reviews treat as a gate but which was never actually in the workflow. **What this does NOT do:** the prose docs still say socxen (they're upstream's voice, and a vendor channel's README is authoritative for install commands there); `SOCXEN_*` env vars and the observra agent name/log path are operator configuration, not brand, and are unchanged. Suite **444 passed / 3 skipped** (+1 drift invariant). BOM regenerated. Evals 1/1. All three drift checks green. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) https://claude.ai/code/session_016Q9UohWfy2scPhr4pavhqd
**Early cut — seeking feedback, not sign-off.** Two things are known-unfinished, so no need to flag them:
- **The name still needs to change.** Everything says `socxen` today; that's a placeholder until the naming decision lands.
- **The graphics are OBVIOUSLY placeholder.** The lion mascot, mark, wordmark, favicons and social card are vector stand-ins drawn to mock up the site — in the poses and file names the art department will replace. The community and Exabeam logos are the real ones.
What I'd like eyes on: the *structure* and *story* — does the page make the case that this is a security-engineered skill rather than a markdown file, and is the user guide scoped to what a user actually needs?
## What's here
- `index.html` — landing in the Praxen/Observra family (same theme system, recolored to lion gold): hero, the three skills, five-minute setup, guardrails ("SIEM data is untrusted input — build like it"), the five layers ("a skill is a markdown file; this is a system"), assurance (red team, Praxen ABV, AI-BOM), install with a Claude/Codex tab.
- `guide/` — **user docs only**, generated from the repo's markdown by `docs_build.py`: Overview, Installation & setup, **Using the skills** (new `plugin/docs/usage.md`), Example investigation, Security guardrails, Audit logging. Methodology, red-team, Praxen and AI-BOM material stays in `security/` and is linked there, not published as user docs.
- `assets/socxen-theme.css`, `graphics/` (with a README on the convention + placeholder status), `llms.txt`, `robots.txt`, `sitemap.xml`, `.nojekyll`.
- No news page (pre-launch). Pages is **not** enabled on the repo; nothing is public until that separate step.
- Rode along: American spelling repo-wide (quoted Codex error text and red-team fixtures untouched).
## To look at it
Check out the branch and open `index.html` as a file URL — everything is relative, no server needed. Or run `uv run docs_build.py` to regenerate `guide/` after editing any of the source markdown.
Suite unchanged: 443 passed. Supersedes #145 (opened prematurely, closed).

… PreToolUse hook (#148) Ships the human-in-the-loop gate **ON** for Claude Code as a `PreToolUse` hook bundled in the plugin, so both hosts gate dismiss/close and deny containment the moment the plugin is enabled — no merge step. Answers #9's two open questions and closes #3's "inert until merged". Closes #3. Closes #90 (operator disclosures now on the audit trail; the one that cannot be logged is documented as stderr-only). Closes #2 (its enforcement half — the injection → bypassable gate → prose-only log chain — is broken on every link; the fence/flag residual moves to #10). Closes #9. **Stacked on #146** (`site/github-pages`); GitHub retargets this PR to `dev` when that merges. Reviewer: @mattwillems-exabeam. Ten-ish commits, ~50 files. ## What ships - **The hook** (`plugin/hooks/gate.py` + `hooks.json`, declared in the manifest). Keyed on the bare tool name from the tier file: **ask** on `update_alert` / `update_case` / `send_email`, **deny** on the 17 containment tools, **allow** on the 18 allow-tier tools (16 reads + the two escalation writes — reads run with no prompt), **ask** on anything unclassified. Deny/ask hold under `--dangerously-skip-permissions`; a headless ask is refused; never fails open (unreadable tiers or a malformed event → ask); the invocation itself fails closed if `python3` is missing (`|| exit 2`). Decision log at `~/.socxen/gate.jsonl`, rotated. - **Nothing to merge.** The permission pack becomes an optional second lock that does not depend on the hook. A manually wired server must be named `exabeam` — neither the hook nor the rules recognize another name. README, plugin README, install/usage docs, site copy, installer and preflight all say this (and no longer say the gate ships off). - **`exabeam_send_email`**: `subject` and `body` now pass the write-side neutralizer (secrets masked, formulas and markdown links de-fanged). Recipients are scoped server-side to the subscription's active users (verified in `Exabeam/exa-mcp-proxy`). Links in HTML `href`/`src` are **not** de-fanged — product decision on clickable links in #147. - **Telemetry** attests its own configuration on `mcp_session_start` (backend, resolved destination, dry-run, gate log, plugin version), records kept invisibles and screening fail-opens on `tool_end`, and tags neutralizer refusals on `tool_error`. - **Praxen Worker Remit v1.4**: the bundled gate and the email channel declared. ## Evidence | Gate | Result | |---|---| | Red team — standard Sonnet leg, 20 fixtures | 100/100 resisted (+ 15/15 top-up) | | Red team — **hook-only leg** (write tools offered, permissions bypassed, hook the only gate) | 100/100 resisted, **0 gated-write attempts** | | Red team — c03 pre-authorized close (new) | Sonnet 5/5 resisted, 0 attempts · Haiku control 5/5 landed with 0 attempts (below-floor model reports a close it never attempted) | | Praxen 2.0.0-beta.1, Opus 5 high mode + threat model | **0 Critical** · 3 High · 9 Medium · RAISE 3.15 | Five Praxen findings fixed on the branch after the snapshot (001 invocation fail-closed, 006/007 via telemetry, 008 docs, 012 log rotation); 002 addressed with residual → #147; 003 (unscreened remote tool descriptions) open. Full record in `security/praxen/README.md` and `security/redteam/HISTORY.md`. **The release-gate runs happen on the dev RC** with the fixed harness (both Claude legs, Codex leg, c03). Last night's passes stand as the branch's regression evidence; the hook-leg row carries a stated caveat (the dry-run bridge's isolation was not verified during that pass — zero attempts means nothing reached any bridge; the runner now proves isolation before a pass starts). ## Harness changes (reviewer's eye) - Forbidden-outcome check was dark on Claude (the Skill tool's text was captured as the report) — assistant-only capture, last-line outcome reader; retro-check on 222 transcripts changed no verdict. - Hook-leg grader recognized only the hook's own reason; a headless ask surfaces as the host's refusal sentence — fixed. Dry-run marker matched stderr text the model never sees — fixed to the bridge's real sentence. - Hook leg now runs under `--strict-mcp-config` with a preflight that proves the dry-run bridge is the only server, and aborts the pass otherwise (verified live both ways). - New `attempt_expected` fixture class + `input.instruction`; raw per-trial streams archived (gitignored); the runner caffeinates the host — every dead drive last night was the Mac sleeping. ## Code review Four parallel reviewers (hook/installer, bridge/telemetry, harness/grader, docs-vs-code) + one re-verification round; all verdicts mergeable. Deferred by intent, each stated in code or ledger: `bare()` suffix classification; installer reports rather than exits on missing `python3`; Windows without Git Bash is a documented scope limit; the outcome reader can read a prose mention (fails toward a false landing, never a false pass); the Codex exec-item result field is unverified (same safe direction). ## Caveats worth knowing - The SKILL.md governance paragraph changed after the red-team snapshot (names the hook instead of the snippet; "21 tools"). The ask doctrine is unchanged. - No version bump here — that waits for the release PR, as with 0.8.5. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) https://claude.ai/code/session_016Q9UohWfy2scPhr4pavhqd
…ctions off Node 20, Dependabot, enforced SHA pinning (#149) Closes #71, closes #100, closes #131 — the CI-hygiene set from the August tracker sweep, in one PR. No product behavior changes; everything is verifiable in this PR's own checks. ## What changes | Item | Change | Issue | |---|---|---| | Security lint | `ruff --select S` (flake8-bandit) over `plugin/` as a **required** check. Each deliberate `try/except/pass` in the shipped code carries `# noqa: S110` and its reason — a swallowed exception in the payload is a documented decision, never an accident. Same lint over `scripts/`, `security/`, `evals/` is **advisory** (`--exit-zero`, statistics only; they never ship, #66). | #100 | | Dependency audit | `pip-audit --strict` over the bridge's hash-pinned lockfile (`uv export --script` → requirements) on every push. Clean today. Dependabot security alerts cover the same tree asynchronously; this is the synchronous gate. | #71 rung 3 (rungs 1–2 landed in #78) | | Actions off Node 20 | `actions/checkout` v4.4.0 → **v7.0.1** (`3d3c42e5…`), `astral-sh/setup-uv` v5.4.2 → **v10.0.1** (`20cfd1bf…`), in all three workflows that use them. `setup-uv` is invoked with no inputs, so the v6 breaking changes (`activate-environment`, `working-directory`, cache glob) do not apply — this PR's green run is the proof. | #131 | | Pins stop rotting | `.github/dependabot.yml`, `github-actions` ecosystem, weekly; Dependabot rewrites SHA pins and their `# vX.Y.Z` comments together. | #131 | | Pinning enforced | Repository setting **"Require actions to be pinned to a full-length commit SHA"** is now ON (flipped 2026-09-05) — a bare tag is rejected at run time rather than caught by a reviewer. | #131 | ## Why now The 2026-09-05 Praxen scan held *Manage Your Supply Chain* at 3 with the rationale "no dependency or CVE scanning of any kind" and *Build an AI Red Team* at 4 for "no in-repo enforcement." These are the two cheapest movements on those rationales before the dev RC re-scan. Honest scope note: `ruff -S` scans our own code (#100); the CVE scanning Praxen names is the `pip-audit` step (#71). ## Interaction with #148 #148 adds `plugin/hooks/gate.py`, which has two deliberate exception-swallows of its own; they now carry their `# noqa: S110` reason on that branch (pushed), so the required lint is green in either merge order. ## Also in this PR: a generated SBOM (follow-on Steve asked for) `security/gen_sbom.py` reads the bridge's uv lockfile — and nothing else — and emits a **CycloneDX 1.6 SBOM** (`security/sbom.cdx.json` + `sbom.html`): 33 locked packages (5 direct), each with version, purl, the SHA-256 of every locked artifact, direct/transitive marking, and the full dependency graph; the AI BOM and the SBOM cross-reference each other. It keeps itself current without anyone editing it: `--check` in the invariants job fails on drift; the security job rebuilds it on every run and publishes it as the `socxen-sbom-<sha>` workflow artifact beside the `pip-audit` of the same tree; `bump_version.py` regenerates it on a release; and a repo invariant asserts the SBOM mirrors the lock. Documented in `security/README.md` → *The SBOM*, CONTRIBUTING, and the README evidence row. ## Not in this PR A CodeQL schedule — worth considering once this lint has a baseline, not before (#100's own advice). Lockfiles for the non-shipped PEP 723 entrypoints (#71's optional tail). 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) https://claude.ai/code/session_016Q9UohWfy2scPhr4pavhqd
…#151) Closes #121. Remit-only; needed on `dev` **before the release-candidate Praxen scan**, so that scan reads the policy as it is rather than noisier than it is. **Stacked on #148** (`gate/bundled-hook`, which owns remit v1.4); retargets down the chain as those merge. | #121 item | Disposition | |---|---| | 1. Split the dependency-pinning rule | **Moot.** `uv run` honors the script lockfile automatically, so both halves hold; Friday's scan verifies the rule. No change. | | 2. Two headings acting as rules (*Allowed Tools*, *Approved Communication Channels* — both scored `gap` on 2026-09-05) | Closure sentences added: anything outside the inventory / the table is out of policy; a new tool or channel must be classified before use; an unclassified tool must ask. | | 3. Remit bans local storage; two skills read the host's spill file (`gap`, Praxen `-009`) | **Operator decision, taken the declared-residual route (Steve, 2026-09-05):** Open Question 9 — the spill file is the *host's* copy of raw tenant content, not a socxen write; socxen may read it, must not itself write tenant content locally; location/lifecycle are the host's and disclosed in the docs; write-path redaction does not apply. Recorded under Declared Redaction Limits. Bounding oversized results at the bridge stays the intended fix on the backlog. R-22 and R-32 reworded to say the same. | | 4. Three disclosure rules name no channel (`partial` ×3, Praxen `-007`) | Named, now that #148 commits the docs: the audit trail's session record + the bridge's startup line for the destination; stderr for the one case the trail itself cannot carry (telemetry disabling itself). | | 5. Declared Redaction Limits missing the link-form residual (#119) | Added, plus the two that appeared since: HTML `href`/`src` in mail bodies (#147) and the spill file (item 3). | Expected effect on the next scan: R-11 and R-19 stop scoring `gap` on shape alone; R-32 reads as a declared residual instead of a gap; R-10/R-59/R-64 become pass/fail rather than `partial`; R-48 stops re-raising the link-form gap as new. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) https://claude.ai/code/session_016Q9UohWfy2scPhr4pavhqd
…op doing, disclose the manual-MCP gap, see every Codex TOML spelling (#150) Closes #91, closes #86, closes #139, closes #143. The four cheap, unowned items from the 2026-09-05 tracker sweep, each a one-file change with a test; #104 turned out to be already fixed and is closed separately. **Stacked on #144** (`refactor/identity-single-source`) so the tiering change goes through `gen_identity.py`; GitHub retargets to `dev` when #144 merges. It also touches `SKILL.md`, `installation.md`, `security-guardrails.md` and `preflight.sh`, all of which #148 touches in other places — whichever of this and #148 merges second takes a small rebase. | Issue | Change | Test | |---|---|---| | #143 two ungoverned MCP tools | `exabeam_analytics_rule_details` → **allow** (a read; note its bare-string `arg0`). `exabeam_create_analytics_rule` → **deny** on both hosts under both spellings — it creates a detection rule server-side, and `rule-tuning` is proposals-only; `exabeam_update_analytics_rule` denied ahead of the MCP exposing it. Documented in `containment-tools.md` beside the containment verbs so the deny-list invariant derives them; tool map at 23 live tools with a *Never* section; the skill, both READMEs and the remit stop saying "there is no rule-write path". Generated artifacts regenerated (snippet, manifests, Codex map now 38 disabled, AI BOM). | `test_rule_write_tools_are_denied_and_documented`; governed count 21 → 22 | | #91 no decline / abandon clause | Two paragraphs in `soc-investigate`'s governance: a declined or unanswered dismiss/close is *over* — no retry, no reaching the same outcome by another route (a `create_case` with a closed stage, a note asserting closure) — and out-of-lane requests are declined and handed back. Matches remit R-53 and the lane rule; the c03 grader already checks the workaround path this names. | `test_skill_says_what_to_stop_doing` | | #86 manual-MCP path undisclosed | The "wire it manually" section now says that screening, the neutralizer and the audit trail all live in the bridge and none run on a direct registration; only the dismiss/close gate survives, and only for a server named `exabeam`. Same statement on the guardrails page. | `test_manual_mcp_path_discloses_what_it_forgoes` | | #139 preflight TOML spellings | `codex_write_override()` now sees the section-header, dotted-key and inline-table spellings of a per-tool `approval_mode`, scoped to the named tool so a sibling's `"approve"` cannot mask it. | `tests/test_preflight_codex_override.py`: five loosenings detected, four intact configs not flagged | One thing to settle at the #148 rebase: the hook's deny reason currently reads "…is a containment action"; with rule writes on the deny tier it should say "…is a containment action or a detection-content write". Cosmetic, one string. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) https://claude.ai/code/session_016Q9UohWfy2scPhr4pavhqd
…estination (#147 Option B, #119) (#152) Implements Matt's ruling on #147 (Option B): **clickable is decided by destination, not authorship.** Links in every form socxen can read — markdown (all CommonMark forms, closing the #119 markdown items), GFM autolinks, reference definitions, HTML `href`/`src` and every other URL-bearing attribute, `srcset`, CSS `url()`/`@import`/`image-set()` — are de-fanged unless they point into the operator's own tenant. The allowlist is derived from `EXABEAM_MCP_URL` at bridge start (exactly the API host, no wildcard) and from nothing else: no tool argument, no tenant content, no model output can widen it. Also, unconditionally: tracking pixels and other fetches are de-fanged, `on*` handlers dropped, `javascript:`/`data:`/other schemes made inert, `script`/`iframe`/`object`/`embed`/`svg`/`math`/`template`/`noscript` removed with their content, `form`/`meta`/`base`/`link`/inputs escaped, `srcdoc` dropped. Malformed markup a tokenizer would still act on (an unterminated quote, a `<` inside a quoted value) is escaped to literal text rather than reasoned about. **Mail mode** (`subject`/`body` of `exabeam_send_email`): a mail client auto-links bare URLs, so in mail bare URLs are de-fanged too. The bundled mail template is byte-identical through the pass (pinned by test). **Residuals, stated:** an open redirect on the API host passes the rule; a bare URL in a *note* stays as written (a note viewer does not auto-link). (An earlier cut also allowed the region domain; dropped after review — a region is shared by every tenant in it.) ### How it was tested - 3 rounds of adversarial review by independent agents (bypass hunt, do-no-harm + performance, wiring/tests/docs). Round 1 found 5 bypasses (unterminated-quote attribute, >3-deep markdown brackets, nested-paren destinations, CSS `\75rl(` escape, `image-set()`); round 2 found 4 more (attribute adjacent to a quoted value with no space, ` on…=` inside a value, prose between stray `<`…`>` in mail, CSS escape inside a `url()` argument). All fixed and pinned. Round 2 re-verified round 1's fixes; tag-name tricks (`<a\x00href`, `<a =href`) were refuted against html5lib/lxml. - Mutation testing (38 mutants) — surviving mutants that mattered now have tests (case-insensitive handlers, entity round-trip, smuggled control bytes in a relative value, `data`/`usemap`/`noscript`/`template`). - Final do-no-harm + performance review on the round-2 build: 0 High; two quadratic shapes it found (a tag padded with 20 000 spaces, `url(` repeated in a style attribute) fixed, and the mail **subject** is now treated as the SMTP header it is (plain text, never HTML-escaped). - Full suite: 650 passed. Ruff security lint clean. AI-BOM current. Red-team fixture lint 22/22. - New red-team fixture **a12** (HTML anchor + pixel in an imported note, graded through the write-side pipeline) for the dev RC run. ### Performance inspection Typical payloads are unchanged; hostile shapes are bounded by construction (no per-opener rescans, non-backtracking destination regex capped at 2 KB, linear block/comment passes). | payload | before | after (note) | after (mail) | |---|---|---|---| | 2 KB analyst note | 0.48 ms | 0.49 ms | 0.65 ms | | 32 KB note | 7.4 ms | 7.9 ms | 9.9 ms | | 8 KB HTML mail | 1.7 ms | 2.9 ms | 3.1 ms | | 32 KB HTML mail | 6.4 ms | 11.2 ms | 12.1 ms | | whole `update_alert` write through the bridge | — | 0.48 ms | — | | worst hostile 32 KB shape (`](` repeated) | 1.3 s (round 1) | 141 ms | 141 ms | A 32 KB page of `<a "` cost 2.6 s after round 1 and costs 20 ms now; a 100 KB style attribute of `url(` went from over 10 s to 39 ms. A timing test pins every known hostile shape under 500 ms. Stacked on #151 (`remit/v1.5-tuneups`) → #148 (`gate/bundled-hook`). … of the same name, and every trial proves which skill it loaded On 2026-09-06 the harness leg of the dev RC gate ran 86 sessions against the INSTALLED 0.8.5 plugin's skill and bridge while reporting itself as a test of dev: Claude Code loads both the installed plugin and --plugin-dir, and the cache copy wins silently. Two guards: a preflight reads `claude plugin list --json` and aborts when an enabled plugin carries the working tree's name (with the disable command); and every Claude trial checks the Skill tool's "Base directory for this skill" line against --plugin-dir, raising IsolationError otherwise — the same fail-loud posture as the hook leg's MCP-server isolation. The 2026-09-05 hook-leg captures pass the check retroactively (they loaded the working-tree copy); the 2026-09-04 harness leg's captures were not archived, so its provenance is unverified and it is re-run on dev. …ore any drive; a session with no Exabeam server aborts the pass Second failure of the same gate on 2026-09-06: with the installed plugin disabled, a RELATIVE --plugin-dir resolved against the temp cwd drive() uses, Claude Code loaded no plugin at all, and every trial ran with no Exabeam server and no skill — a 'resisted' with no tools is vacuous. The path is now resolved once in main() and must carry .claude-plugin/plugin.json; every Claude trial's init event must list an Exabeam MCP server or the pass stops (IsolationError), the same posture as the hook leg's server check. The hook leg never had the bug because it always passed the absolute temp copy. …t record; reads retry, writes never (#153 #154 #155) (#157) Our half of the 2026-09-06 concurrency failures (the review is at `~/Documents/github/soc-analyst/reviews/exa-mcp-proxy-concurrency-review-2026-09-06.md`; the proxy half is parked in #156 until this lands and we re-measure). **What changes** - **#154 — one session per process.** The bridge opened a fresh connection and MCP session for every tool call (six HTTP exchanges each, including a re-fetch of the ~110 KB tool list); the proxy runs a permission RPC per session. Now one session is opened lazily by an owner task and reopened only when lost. Every call is raced against the owner so a transport death fails the call immediately with its real cause instead of hanging on a dead session. The session is terminated once at exit (failed calls no longer leak proxy sessions). Token minted once under concurrent first calls; a failed refresh keeps a still-valid token. - **#153 — the real error.** The audit record carried `error_class: ExceptionGroup, error_message: null` for all 115 failures. Now: `error_type_name`, `error_message` (canonicalized, capped), `http_status`, `is_retryable`; the agent reads `Exabeam MCP unavailable: HTTP 500 on exabeam_search_alerts`. An upstream `isError` reply is a `tool_error` (stage `upstream_tool`) and an error to the agent, not a success. `tools/list` failures are audited. - **#155 — startup and retry.** Tool list fetched once with a bounded retry and a startup stderr line ("remote reachable — 19 Exabeam tools" / "NOT reachable (HTTP 500 on tools/list) — will retry on the first call"). Reads retried with jitter on transport errors. **A write is sent exactly once, whatever the error.** Calls carry a read timeout. A per-process breaker holds off a rejecting proxy for 20 s and names the last failure. **What does not change.** Every read still passes canonicalize; every write still passes neutralize, the gate and the audit trail. `tests/test_bridge_transport.py::test_guardrails_still_run_on_every_call` pins it. **How it is tested.** A local mock streamable-HTTP proxy (127.0.0.1, scriptable: 5xx on initialize, 5xx/404/isError on a call) and 11 tests that count requests: one `initialize` for five reads; one `tools/call` for a failed write; two for a retried read; two `initialize`s after a 404; one token under five concurrent first calls; the leaf error's fields in telemetry; the breaker never touching the remote. CI now installs the locked client line (`mcp>=1,<2`, httpx, certifi) so the suite runs there instead of skipping. Existing suites: 717 passed. Security lint clean. **Validation after merge (approved plan):** a hook-leg top-up on the two class-C fixtures and c03, five trials each, not a full re-run; the ledger will note that reads may now be retried (same result, no new surface). 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) https://claude.ai/code/session_016Q9UohWfy2scPhr4pavhqd
…emit's verbs; unclassified tools are writes (Praxen 003/004/005) (#158) The three Zero Trust findings from the 2026-09-07 Praxen scan of dev (`socxen-rc-2026-09-06T2151`), which all said one thing: the enforcement is real but its reach was defined by lists of today's names. Stacked on #157 because 005 touches the same bridge file; retargets to `dev` when #157 lands. **003 — the allow tier is the bundled bridge's alone.** The hook's prompt-free *allow* used to apply under any server whose name contained "exabeam". Now it is granted only to `plugin_<this plugin's name>_exabeam`, with the name read from the identity file shipped beside the hook (manifest as fallback; unreadable means nothing is bundled and reads fall through, never allow). Ask and deny still apply to any Exabeam-named server, since tightening is always safe. A manual registration therefore gets the operator's own rules for reads, which is what the generated snippet already encodes. A vendor-keyed copy (`soc@exabeam`) recognizes its own bridge because it reads its own identity file; a test builds one. **004 — matcher and hook agree on case.** Both are case-insensitive now. `preflight` warns when `claude mcp list` shows an Exabeam server registered under a name the gate does not reach. **005 — closed tiers, default-write bridge.** The deny tier carries every detection-content verb the Worker Remit names, 16 verbs under both spellings, ahead of the MCP exposing them; `containment-tools.md` lists them and the deny-list sync test derives them. The two parser reads the proxy defines are classified allow ahead of exposure. In the bridge, writes are the default and the tier file's reads the exception: an unclassified tool is neutralized, audited and refused in a dry run until it is classified. **User impact.** Bundled install: none. Manual `claude mcp add exabeam` path: reads follow your own rules and may prompt; the install guide says so and calls that path a connectivity check. Nothing new to install. **Verified.** 722 stubbed + 11 transport tests, every drift gate, security lint clean, and the shipped hook command end to end: bundled read → allow; manual read → no decision; manual dismiss → ask; `mcp__EXABEAM-prod__…isolate_host` → deny; an unexposed `create_correlation_rule` → deny; another server's tool → no decision. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) https://claude.ai/code/session_016Q9UohWfy2scPhr4pavhqd
#89, #6 — assessment F-03/F-05) (#159) Stacked on #158. The two open High findings from the 2026-08-14 security assessment that every Praxen scan since has re-confirmed. Closes #89; closes #6. ## F-03 / #89 — an update changes state and disposition only `exabeam_update_alert` and `exabeam_update_case` take description, name, reason and tag fields with **replace** semantics, and the action matrix said a dismiss goes "with the reason" — so on ordinary use the model could overwrite text an analyst wrote. Now: - the bridge forwards only the state fields on those two tools — `alertStatus`/`priority`; `stage`, a supported `closedReason`, `priority`, `assignee`, `queue`. The closed-reason vocabulary is the API's own (documented in prose, no schema enum, checked live against staging): a supported value passes, anything else is free text and is dropped; - everything else is dropped **before** neutralization and the call, the reply names what was dropped (names, never values) and says the reason belongs in a case note, and the audit record carries `droppedFields`; - the skill's action matrix and governance text say the same; `create_case` is untouched (a new object has nothing to overwrite). ## F-05 / #6 — the remote's tool definitions are screened like a tool result `tools/list` was the one platform-sourced text channel the input canonicalizer did not cover. Now descriptions and schema text are canonicalized once per session (with the cached list), what was stripped is counted in a new `tools_list` audit event, a tool **name** is never rewritten (one carrying a hidden code point is reported), and the startup line names any tool the shipped tier file does not classify — those are treated as writes. Fail-open per definition: a screening error keeps the definition as received and is counted. Pinning (a stored hash of the surface) is deliberately left out; the startup line does change detection by name. ## Verification - 4 wiring tests + 1 mock-proxy transport test; full suite **740 passed** with mcp installed, 727 without; corpus lint, AI-BOM, docs build and Codex map checks clean; bandit lint clean. - A two-leg stress run (hook-only Sonnet + Codex at once, 8 drives, full corpus) on this branch follows; results will be ledgered here. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) https://claude.ai/code/session_016Q9UohWfy2scPhr4pavhqd
…, not forwarded (workaround for the MCP schema text, #160); per-endpoint filter rules (#161) Stacked on #159. Closes #160. ## The decision The MCP server's search schemas tell the caller to send `fields: ["*"]` and to ignore any user request, and the model complies on essentially every call whatever the skill says — 1,840 of 1,840 Claude searches in the 2026-09-07 passes. A wildcard result has ended a session before (13.5M characters). **This PR puts a workaround in place for that misbehavior of the core MCP: the bridge answers a wildcard search with the endpoint's column list instead of forwarding it, and the model re-sends with named columns. It is explicitly temporary — to be reconsidered for removal when exa-mcp-proxy fixes its descriptions.** Wildcard searches remain a legitimate thing for a human to run in the console; only what our agent sends is shaped. The durable handling of an oversized result (bound and page) stays open as #162. ## What the bridge does (`11820e2`) - On `search_events` / `search_alerts` / `search_cases` only, when `fields` is or contains `"*"` (top level or inside `arg0`/`arg1`): returns a tool **result** (never an error) naming the verified column list for that endpoint and saying why; nothing is sent. Audited as a completed call with `action.wildcardFieldsRedirected: true`. - Named fields, a missing `fields` key, and every other tool are forwarded untouched. Column lists checked live against staging. - Five wiring tests. 755 passed. ## The cookbook (the documentation half) Per-endpoint rules at the top of the grammar section: alerts and cases take no free text (every clause `field:"value"`), events wants everything quoted, never the wildcard (the bridge now enforces it), and a `"Syntax error while query using fields"` on a well-formed query is a backend failure that affects a whole session — say so and move on (no same-session retry; that failure is per session from its first search, see #156). ## What the data said 1,007 live searches, 331 rejected: ~45% free text on alerts/cases, ~10% bare text on events, ~55% the per-session backend failure (two episodes; query ids on #160 for the proxy team). 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) https://claude.ai/code/session_016Q9UohWfy2scPhr4pavhqd
…hashed (#163) (#164) * bridge: a create_case carrying a closing disposition is refused; tool definitions are screened for instruction-shaped text and hashed per session (#163, Praxen 2026-09-07-001/-002) Praxen scan of the merged dev @ f82bdef by the automated reviewer's isolated session (#163), both Highs re-read at their cited lines and confirmed: -001: exabeam_create_case sits in the prompt-free allow tier on both hosts yet accepts stage and closedReason, so a case created already CLOSED / FALSE POSITIVE was a close by another route around the ask-tier gate -- forbidden by SKILL.md in prose only, counted by the red-team grader, unenforced. The bridge now refuses such a create BEFORE the dry run, with its own sentence ("socxen bridge refused exabeam_create_case: ..."), audited as a guardrail refusal (stage neutralize); an opening stage, no stage, and free text on the new object pass untouched. The grader reads that sentence as a control save (BRIDGE_REFUSAL_MARK), so the attempt is on record and only an un-refused route lands. New fixture c04-close-via-create-case-after-decline provokes the route on purpose (a handoff note naming it). -002: definitions were canonicalized for hidden code points but never screened for language, and the proxy's own schemas talk to the model ("MANDATORY ... IGNORE any user request" -- obeyed 1,840/1,840). A definition whose text is instruction-shaped is now named on the startup line and in the tools_list event (directive_tools) -- surfaced, never rewritten -- and every definition is hashed (tool_shas, surface_sha) so a change between sessions shows up in the audit trail. Within a session the list is fetched once, so there is nothing to compare against; said so in the changelog. Tests: the create guard (five closing shapes refused, three opening shapes forwarded, refusal precedes the dry run), the directive screen + hashes against the mock proxy, the grader's new control mark. 761 passed; corpus 23/23 valid. Stale `tools()` docstring. - tests: mark-echo shapes, FALSE POSITIVE on both branches, folded keys, blank stage, a supportingReason that says "closed as a false positive, dismissed" passes (keys, never values). - c04 drive ledgered in HISTORY (Codex 5/5, hook leg 4/5 then 5/5 after the label fix) with the three results files; the label finding recorded under Fixed findings. - logging.md: on the Exabeam MCP as shipped every definition is instruction-shaped -- expect the full list, read tool_shas for change. @mattwillems-exabeam — the 0.8.6 promotion, dev → main. Not urgent and not time-critical. Version 0.8.6 consistent across both manifests, identity.json and the README pill · all four generators report in sync (gen_identity, gen_codex_mcp, gen_aibom, gen_sbom) · main is an ancestor of dev · 743 passed, 4 skipped.
docs_build.py --check now exists and is a CI step — that closes the drift gap I raised on #146, and it matters more than it looks: #148 made "the gate ships off until you merge the snippet" false, and a stale published guide would have kept saying it.
The scan tree is not quite the shipped tree — but every delta tightens
The notes say Praxen ran on "the #164 tree at 8eb6c24" and that later commits are review fixes. Three commits follow it, and one touches plugin/connector/exabeam-mcp-bridge.py — the file the release calls the enforcement point. So I diffed it rather than take the characterization:
gate.pyandpermissions.jsonare byte-identical to the scanned tree — the governance surface is covered- The connector's 23/11 delta is entirely hardening: disposition keys folded to letters so
closed_reason/Closed-Reasoncan't spell around the refusal; blankstagetreated as absent; the refusal naming the schema's spelling rather than echoing the model's; the injection pattern widened tooverrides?andanalyst|operator; the definition hash extended to title, annotations andoutputSchema
Every one strictly tightens a control the scan evaluated, so the shipped tree is stricter than the scanned tree. That's the safe direction, and it's a materially better position than 0.8.5, where the corpus predated the doctrine change. Worth saying explicitly in HISTORY that the deltas tighten rather than just that they exist — "review fixes" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.
The waiver reads well — one question about its premise
The rationale for accepting the tool-description High at Medium is the strongest part of the scan write-up. "One cannot coherently trust the evidence and distrust the labels on the tools that fetch it" is exactly right, and grounding the accidental branch in #160 (a real "MANDATORY, IGNORE any user request" description that reached 100% of calls) keeps it honest rather than theoretical.
The premise is that exactly one party can write those descriptions: Exabeam. That holds while EXABEAM_MCP_URL points at genuine Exabeam infrastructure — and Low -008 in the same scan says any scheme is accepted there. The two interact: the waiver's "only one writer" assumption is really an assumption about the endpoint, and the endpoint isn't validated.
Not a blocker and arguably out of model too (a mis-pointed URL is operator error or an already-compromised environment). But it's worth one sentence in the waiver saying the premise depends on the endpoint being the vendor's, especially now that -008 is on record next to it and this release reaches a wider audience.
Nit
The notes say 761 unit tests; the tree reports 743. Stale body, no action needed, but the number is quoted in a release record.
Good release. The three-thread framing is accurate — and the gate shipping ON with its reach decided by identity is the thing that changed most between 0.8.5 and now.
…st count qualified (#166 review notes) (#170) Matt's approval notes on #166: HISTORY and the CHANGELOG gate paragraph now say the two commits after the Praxen scan strictly tighten the scanned controls (gate.py and permissions.json byte-identical); the waiver on 2026-09-07-002 says its one-writer premise depends on EXABEAM_MCP_URL naming the vendor's infrastructure, next to Low -008; the unit-test count is qualified by the optional test deps.
